Prime Minister Rishi Sunak joined the UK Home Office enforcement officials on a raid as part of a nationwide crackdown on illegal migration, which ended in the arrest of 105 foreign nationals from across 20 nationalities.

Sunak, 43, dressed in a bulletproof vest, attended one of the actions in Brent, north London, earlier this week to observe Immigration Enforcement officers at work as part of their “day of action”.

The British-Indian leader has made cracking down on illegal migration one of his government’s top priorities ahead of a General Election, expected next year.

“Illegal working harms our communities, cheats honest workers out of employment and defrauds the public purse as no taxes are paid,” said UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

“As the Prime Minister has set out, we are committed to tackling the abuse of our laws and borders. We know the prospect of black-market employment is a significant attraction for migrants considering making dangerous and illegal journeys to the UK. Operations such as today send a clear message that we will not stand for this,” she said.

During the operation, which took place across the UK on Thursday, Immigration Enforcement officers arrested 105 foreign nationals found working without the right to do so during 159 raids on suspected illegal work establishments.

The arrests took place on commercial premises, including restaurants, car washes, nail bars, barber shops and convenience stores. Suspects were arrested for offences, including illegal working and possession of false documentation, with sums of cash also seized at some locations.

Of those arrested, over 40 were detained by the Home Office pending their removal from the UK, with the remaining suspects being released on immigration bail. It is also expected that a number of the arrests will result in a voluntary departure from the UK, the Home Office said.

“This result demonstrates the dedication and professionalism of our officers to take action against immigration offenders, as well as employers who are not complying with the rules. Our enforcement teams are working around the clock to deter immigration offending and help protect the public,” said Eddy Montgomery, Director of Enforcement, Compliance and Crime at the Home Office.

“Working closely with partners and agencies including the police and the National Crime Agency (NCA), we are tackling illegal work at every level. It is vital that we not only identify individuals in breach of immigration law but target the people smuggling networks behind this type of criminal activity,” he said.

While offenders of over 20 different nationalities were found to be working without proper visa rights to be in the UK, the countries involved have not been identified.

The Home Office said the operation builds on the ongoing work by Immigration Enforcement officers to clamp down on illegal working, which is a key part of the government’s approach to stopping the boats crossing the English Channel illegally. The operation is aimed at tackling illegal migration by breaking the business model of criminal gangs who use the offer of black market jobs as one way to draw people to the UK illegally, officials added.

In the first quarter of 2023, Immigration Enforcement teams claim they delivered 1,303 enforcement visits, a 57 per cent increase on the same period last year. And, since Sunak set out his plan in December last year to “stop the boats” crossing illegally into the UK, arrests are said to have doubled compared to the same period last year.

A right-wing Greek parliamentarian was expelled from the party of former prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, seeking a second term at polls next weekend, for racist remarks after the mass drowning of migrants.&nbsp;

The Greek coastguard was continuing its search for survivors of the sinking of a boat carrying migrants that killed at least 78 people overnight Tuesday.&nbsp;

Hopes of finding survivors are fading "by the minute," according to officials.&nbsp;

The coastguard has so far rescued 104 people from the boat which rescuers said was carrying "hundreds" of migrants.&nbsp;

While condemning the "tragic" loss of life, including "children", Spilios Kriketos, a lawmaker in Mitsotakis' New Democracy (ND) party, said Thursday that Greece "cannot tolerate more migrants", in an interview on the Kontra YouTube channel.&nbsp;

He then accused migrants of stealing.

On Friday, ND said it had expelled him.&nbsp;

"Opinions such as those expressed by Spilios Kriketos have no place in our party," the party said in a statement. &nbsp;

"Statements of hate and racism are not part of the party's values."

Kriketos is running in the June 25 legislative elections which follow Mitsotakis's first place finish in May's polls which nonetheless left him without a clear parliamentary majority.&nbsp;

The main leftist opposition party Syriza on Friday called the remarks "racist" and called on the ND to expel Kriketos.&nbsp;

The former conservative government of Mitsotakis, in power for four years from 2019 to 2023 and credited with winning the May 25 elections, has followed a strict immigration policy and emphasised "security" and border lockdowns.&nbsp;

Greek media and NGOs have repeatedly accused Greece of carrying out "illegal" expulsions of migrants in the Aegean Sea, a charge rejected by the previous government.&nbsp;

"New Democracy implemented a strict but fair immigration policy, keeping the borders but protecting human life and saving thousands of people who were in danger at sea," the party said.&nbsp;

According to officials on a conference call with reporters, the government is also in talks with more Latin American countries and may announce new processing centres in the coming weeks. Migrants will be screened at the centres for eligibility under the US&nbsp;Refugee Admissions Programme and other humanitarian and labour avenues.

As per the&nbsp;Biden administration officials, Spain and Canada will accept recommendations from the regional centres.

“Migration affects every country in the region,” a senior official told Los Angeles Times.&nbsp;“No one country can provide solutions for millions of displaced people on its own.”

The announcement comes two weeks before the scheduled expiration of Title 42 orders, which were put in place during the COVID-19 outbreak and banned migrants from obtaining asylum, allowing border officers to quickly return many of them to Mexico.

Recently, Greece has witnessed a surge in the number of accidents similar to the one that took place on Saturday. This comes as the Greek authorities have ramped up patrols in the Aegean Sea which has reportedly made it more difficult for migrants to cross River Evros to reach the islands which has since led traffickers to take them&nbsp;by road.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, Greece said it prevented around 260,000 migrants from crossing its border with Turkey in 2022. At the time, Turkey had said that it adhered to international law, but if a migrant qualifies for refugee status they cannot be accused of having broken the law by crossing a border.&nbsp;

Athens does not have the best record when it comes to the issues relating to migrants, as many human rights organisations have accused Greek officials of illegal pushback and sending them back to Turkey. Athens has steadfastly denied these claims.&nbsp;

However, in a bid to reduce the flow of migrants, conservative Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, earlier this month urged the European Union to “seriously consider” providing financial aid to help extend an anti-migrant steel fence along the border with Turkey. 
 
The fence, in question, is a five-metre high steel barrier, currently 38 kilometres long and Athens wants to extend it by 35 kilometres and add a total of 100 kilometres, in the next three years.&nbsp;

The helicopter took the migrants to Lampedusa which is said to be the usual landing spot for sea migrants from Tunisia and Libya and made several trips amid winds of up to 50 knots, reported Reuters, citing the coast guard. The rescue hours after helicopters had dropped food and blankets on Lampione,&nbsp;part of the same archipelago as Lampedusa island,&nbsp;to aid the migrants until they would be saved, reported the local media.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While it was not immediately clear if the case was of human smuggling, a report by the ANSA news agency, said that the rescue migrants are from Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guinea and Mali. The charity Alarm Phone, which attends calls from migrant boats in distress said that a vessel with at least 500 on board needed rescuing in international waters off Libya, on Monday, reported Reuters.

Last month, more than 1,300 migrants had been rescued in three separate operations off the southern tip of Italy, the coast guard had said in a statement. As of early March, over 17,000 people have reached Italy.&nbsp;

British government is expected to announce within weeks, plans to move migrants out of hotels and into military bases, reported Sky News. The report said that previous suggestions of use of holiday camps and student halls are less likely to be followed up.

The government led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has already signalled that it wants to discontinue use of hotels as accommodation for asylum seekers.

“We have always been upfront about the unprecedented pressure being placed on our asylum system, brought about by a significant increase in dangerous and illegal journeys into the country," a Home Office (interior ministry) spokesperson said.

“We continue to work across government and with local authorities to identify a range of accommodation options."

The government unveiled details of a new law earlier this month. The law would bar entry of asylum seekers arriving in small boats across the channel. Some charities have said that the proposal could be impractical and would criminalise the efforts of thousands of genuine refugees.
