Viruses can remain alive in fresh water for around three days by hitchhiking on plastics, said researchers. The viruses, which cause diarrhoea or stomach upsets, were found to be able to survive in water by attaching with microplastics, the experts said. The viruses like rotavirus remain infectious and pose a health risk. Researchers from University of Stirling made the observations. “We found that viruses can attach to microplastics and that allows them to survive in the water for three days, possibly longer,” said Prof Richard Quilliam, lead researcher of the project, Stirling University, said.

The standard laboratory methods were used to know whether the viruses found on microplastics in water are infectious. “We weren’t sure how well viruses could survive by ‘hitchhiking’ on plastics in the environment, but they do survive and they do remain infectious,” Quilliam said.

Viruses can stay alive in fresh water for three days by attaching to microplastics, says study

A tiny robot-fish has been designed by scientists to remove microplastics from oceans. This 13-mm-long fish will swim around and adsorb the microplastics through its body. What is special about this fish is that its body is soft, flexible and self-healing. It is also a self-propelled fish. With the help of a light laser system in its tail, the fish can swim and flap around at almost 30 mm a second. It is similar to the speed at which plankton drifts in moving water.

The robo-fish has been created from materials inspired by elements, which are available in the sea, like mother-of-pearl or nacre. It has been used in the interior covering of clam shells. A material similar to nacre was created by layering various microscopic sheets of molecules, as per nacre’s specific chemical gradient. It is also stretchy, flexible to twist, and can pull a weight up to 5 kg, as per the study.

13-mm-long robot-fish designed by scientists to ‘eat’ microplastics in oceans

In an alarming development, microplastics have been found in freshly fallen snow in Antarctica for the first time. This is concerning as it could accelerate the melting of the snow and ice which would disrupt the continent's unique ecosystems

Microplastic found in fresh snowfall in Antarctica

After making its presence felt in human lungs and blood, microplastics seem to have breached another frontier. It has been found in freshly fallen snow in Antarctica, media reports said. This has happened for the first time. The new discovery of the tiny plastics could prove detrimental for nature as it may accelerate melting of snow and ice. This may also threaten the unique ecosystems of the continent. Microplastics are even smaller than a grain of rice. Earlier, they were found in sea ice and surface water in Antarctica, the researchers said. Microplastics have also been found in humans and have been threatening to cause new troubles.

The research, which has been published in scientific journal ‘The Cryosphere’, has been conducted by Alex Aves, PhD student, University of Canterbury. It was supervised by Dr Laura Revell.

In late 2019, Aves collected samples of snow from the Ross Ice Shelf to look whether microplastics were transferred from the atmosphere into the snow. “We were optimistic that she wouldn’t find any microplastics in such a pristine and remote location,” Revell said.

Samples were also collected by Aves from Scott Base and McMurdo Station roadways, where microplastics were found previously. So, “she’d have at least some microplastics to study,” Revell said.

After the tests, plastic particles were found in all the 19 samples from Ross Ice Shelf. “It’s incredibly sad but finding microplastics in fresh Antarctic snow highlights the extent of plastic pollution into even the most remote regions of the world,” Aves said.

Around an average of 29 microplastic particles per litre were found by Aves in snow. The samples taken from areas near scientific bases on Ross Island, Scott Base and McMurdo Station had nearly three times the plastics in comparison to the remote areas. In the results, Aves found 13 types of plastics. The most common was PET, which is used to make soft drink bottles and clothing.

"We did not expect to find the highest number of particles in the lower regions of the lungs, or particles of the sizes we found. Bacteria can be the answer to remove microplastics from environment

For the first time, researchers have found microplastic particles in the human placenta, an organ that creates in the uterus during pregnancy, of unborn children unexpectedly, which as indicated by them is "a matter of extraordinary concern." The placenta gives oxygen and sustenance to the infant in the belly while eliminating the waste issue.

As indicated by an examination published in the journal Environment International at the beginning of December, researchers uncovered that these particles are fit for conveying synthetic compounds that could prompt long haul or upset the baby's creating the resistant framework.

The health impact of microplastics in the body is as yet unknown. However, the researchers said they could convey synthetic compounds that could cause long-haul harm or upset the embryo's creating a safe framework. The particles are probably going to have been devoured or taken in by the moms.

Twelve plastic particles were found. Just about 4% of every placenta was investigated, be that as it may, recommending the complete number of microplastics was a lot higher. All the particles dissected were plastics that had been colored blue, red, orange or pink and may have initially come from bundling, paints or makeup, and individual consideration items.

The microplastics were generally 10 microns in size (0.01mm), which means they are adequately little to be conveyed in the circulation system. The particles may have entered the infants' bodies, however, the specialists couldn't evaluate this.

"It resembles having a cyborg child: not, at this point made distinctly out of human cells, yet a combination of natural and inorganic substances," said Antonio Ragusa, head of obstetrics and gynecology at the San Giovanni Calibita Fatebenefratelli emergency clinic in Rome, and who drove the examination. "The moms were stunned."

In the examination, distributed in the diary Environment International, the analysts finished up: "Because of the vital job of the placenta in supporting the hatchling's turn of events and in going about as an interface with the outside climate, the presence of conceivably unsafe plastic particles involves incredible concern. Further examinations should be performed to evaluate if the presence of microplastics may trigger safe reactions or may prompt the arrival of poisonous pollutants, bringing about damage."

The expected impacts of microplastics on babies include diminished fetal development, they said. The particles were not found in placentas from two different ladies in the investigation, which might be the aftereffect of various physiology, diet or way of life, the researchers said. Microplastics contamination has arrived at all aspects of the planet, from the culmination of Mount Everest to the most profound seas. Individuals are now known to devour the little particles by means of food and water, and to inhale them in.

Their impact on the body is obscure however researchers state there is a pressing need to survey the issue, especially for newborn children. In October, researchers uncovered that infants who took care of recipe milk in plastic jugs are gulping a huge number of particles daily. In 2019, specialists announced the revelation of air contamination particles on the fetal side of placentas, demonstrating that unborn children are likewise presented to the grimy air created by engine traffic and non-renewable energy source consumption.

The Italian scientists utilized a sans plastic convention to convey the infants to forestall any tainting of the placentas. Obstetricians and birthing assistants utilized cotton gloves to help the ladies in labor and just cotton towels were utilized in the conveyance room.

Andrew Shennan, teacher of obstetrics at King's College London, told the Daily Mail it was consoling that the infants in the examination had ordinary births yet "it is clearly best not to have unfamiliar bodies while the child is creating".

Elizabeth Salter Green, at the synthetic compounds good cause Chem Trust, stated: "Infants are being brought into the world pre-dirtied. The examination was exceptionally little however by and by banners an extremely stressing concern."

A different late investigation indicated that nanoparticles of plastic breathed in by pregnant guinea pigs were distinguished in the liver, lungs, heart, kidney, and cerebrum of their embryos.

Further examinations should be performed to evaluate if the presence of microplastics may trigger safe reactions or may prompt the arrival of poisonous pollutants, bringing about damage." The expected impacts of microplastics on babies include diminished fetal development, they said. The examination was exceptionally little however by and by banners an extremely stressing concern." A different late investigation indicated that nanoparticles of plastic breathed in by pregnant guinea pigs were distinguished in the liver, lungs, heart, kidney, and cerebrum of their embryos.

The researchers in Ireland found that at an average bottle-fed babies consumed 1.6 million plastic microparticles each day during the first 12 months of their lives. The research was published in the Nature Food journal.

The study looked at rate of microplastic release in ten types of baby bottles with polypropylene being the most commonly used plastic for food containers.

A research had earlier concluded that microplastics and nanoplastics have been found in humans worldwide.

According to "Plastic Oceans”, at least 300 million tonnes of plastic waste is produced worldwide every year with microplastics being 0.2 inches and nanonplastics smaller than 0.001 mm.

Researchers have found that exposure to high water temperatures has had the biggest effect on microplastic release, going from 0.6 million particles per litre on an average at 25C to 55 million/litre at 95C.

According to the researchers, babies in developed countries were reportedly taking the most plastic with 2.3 million particles daily in North America and 2.6 million in Europe which it attributed to low breast-feeding rates in richer countries.

The study had taken World Health Organization(WHO) guidelines on sterilisation as the basis of the study. The researchers said that proper studies on microplastic impact on human health needs to be carried out further.

Earlier, a study by Arizona State University had claimed that tiny particles of plastic exist in human tissues in lungs, liver, spleen and kidneys with microplastics being the most common.

Bottle-fed babies consume 1.6 million microplastic particles each day: Study

Microplastics are a global concern, with new reports emerging everyday of how such small particles are killing aquatic life, and also threatening ecosystems around the globe.

The world pretty much runs on plastic, and now microplastics and nanoplastics can be found in the human body as well.

We have been consuming plastic

It has been long known that people consume such minuscule particles through food, water, and even breathing. But no health impact on the human race has been ascertained yet. A 2018 study found that microplastics have passed through the human gut.

The new study, undertaken by graduate students at Arizona State University claims that minuscule particles of plastic exist in human tissues.

To reach this conclusion, they used 47 human tissue samples from various human body parts like lungs, liver, spleen, and kidneys.

Microplastics were discovered all 47 samples of tissue in question by researchers Charles Rolsky and Varun Kelkar.

Bisphenol A

The common ingredient in all samples was “Bisphenol A”, which is used in food manufacturing, even though it has been linked to health concerns, including cardiovascular issues. The US Environmental Protection Agency had referred to BPA as a “reproductive, developmental, and systemic toxicant in animal studies”.

Considered the first study of its kind, it looked at samples from people who have had significant exposure to plastic.

Microplastics contained in drinking water pose a "low" risk to human health at current levels, but more research is needed to reassure consumers, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday. Studies over the past year on plastic particles detected in tap and bottled water have sparked public concerns but the limited data appear reassuring, the UN agency said its first report on potential health risks associated with ingestion.

Mosquito larvae have been observed ingesting microplastics that can be passed up the food chain, researchers said Wednesday, potentially uncovering a new way that the polluting particles could damage the environment.

Microplastics -- tiny plastic shards broken down from man-made products such as synthetic clothing, car tyres and contact lenses -- litter much of the world's oceans.

Hard to spot and harder to collect, they can seriously harm marine wildlife and are believed to pose a significant risk to human health as they move through the food chain and contaminate water supplies.

Now researchers of the University of Reading believe they have proof for the first time that microplastics can enter our ecosystem by air via mosquitoes and other flying insects.

The team observed mosquito larvae ingesting microscopic plastic beads -- similar to the tiny plastic balls found in everyday cosmetic products -- before monitoring them through their life cycle.

They found that many of the particles were transferred into the mosquitoes' adult form, meaning whatever creatures then ate the flying insects in the wild would also ingest the plastic.

"The significance is that this is quite possibly widespread," Amanda Callaghan, biological scientist at Reading and the lead study author, told AFP.

"We were just looking at mosquitoes as an example but there are lots of insects that live in water and have the same life-cycle with larvae that eat things in water and then emerge as adults."

The animals known to eat such insects include several species of birds, bats and spiders, all of which are hunted in turn by other animals.

"It's basically another pathway for pollution that hadn't been considered previously," Callaghan said.

Although the team observed the mosquitoes in lab conditions, she said it was "highly possible" the process was already happening in the wild.

Several countries including Britain have banned products containing microbeads, but Callaghan said the scale of the problem was still being discovered.

"It's a major problem and those plastics already in the environment are going to be with us for a very, very long time," she said.
