Illegal immigration from India to the United States has been a persistent issue. Recent data by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) showed that 2.9 million illegal immigrants were apprehended at the country's borders with Mexico and Canada in the fiscal year 2024 (October 1, 2023-September 30, 2024).

According to the data by the CBP out of the 2.9 illegal immigrants, 90,415 were Indians. Additionally, roughly 50 per cent of them were from the Indian state of Gujarat, reported Times of India citing sources in Indian agencies tracking illegal immigration.

It added that 10 Indians were arrested every hour. Moreover, 43,764 were arrested at the US-Canada border in the north, which makes it the highest number of Indians caught at this border to date.

However, it did show that there is a slight decline from the previous year's total of 3.2 million, and also in the number of Indians caught on the Mexico route.

In last fiscal year's report, the number of illegal Indian immigrants caught was 96,917.

"People have stopped using the donkey route via Mexico due to two key reasons. One is that they would be kept in Dubai or Turkey for some time before being taken to Mexico. US agencies, over the past few years, have been keeping sharp vigil on illegal immigrants staying in those countries and have broken links in the human smuggling chain," a source in the immigration network told TOI.

US Helps China Reduce Undocumented Migration

Companies including Amazon.com Inc. and Woodside Energy Group Ltd. announced about $20 billion in projects in Mexico, a development that bodes well for President Claudia Sheinbaum as she seeks to attract investment from wary business leaders.

Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said that Woodside plans to invest US$10.4 billion to develop a deepwater project with state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos in the Gulf of Mexico. Amazon will invest $6 billion through 2026 in improving its network and digital infrastructure in the country, Ebrard said.

According to Ebrard, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. is planning to invest $1.5 billion in tourism in the state of Quintana Roo. He made the announcement on Tuesday during a news conference after a meeting of the US-Mexico CEO Dialogue.

Speaking to around 240 Mexican and international company leaders, Sheinbaum sought to downplay concerns that several constitutional reforms will erode democracy and judicial independence in the country, the largest trading partner of the US.

Among those reforms include the judicial overhaul approved last month in Congress - a new law to elect federal judges by popular vote and an energy bill that provides priority for state-owned companies over private firms in energy production and power transmission. Critics say the judicial reforms render investment in Mexico riskier as control over the courts is likely to fall into the hands of Sheinbaum's popular Morena party.

“The president doesn’t want to control the judiciary,” Sheinbaum said. “What we want is to have a judiciary free of corruption.”

Sheinbaum also said that, although the government wants to control 54 per cent of energy generation and transmission in Mexico, there will be clear rules for private investment in the remaining 46 per cent. During the CEO meeting, the government created working groups with companies to address energy projects.

The government will have its energy plan ready by the end of the year, Sheinbaum said. A set of rules known as secondary laws will define the participation process of private companies in energy projects.

After listening to business concerns, Sheinbaum said the government will create a digital transformation agency to reduce red tape and help companies with investment projects.

The North American free-trade pact known as the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, must be strengthened so that the three countries complement each other rather than compete with each other, she said.

The mayor of Chilpancingo, the capital of Mexico's violence-plagued state of Guerrero, travelled alone to an out-of-town meeting before he was killed, Mexico's security minister said on Tuesday about the murder which has shocked the country.

Alejandro Arcos, of Mexico's main opposition alliance, had only taken office six days earlier. Photos circulated on Sunday via WhatsApp and in Mexican media outlets depicting a severed head on top of a pick-up truck, appearing to be that of Arcos.

Assassins storm Cancun resort beach, gun down man before fleeing on jet skis

Soldiers chasing suspicious vehicles on a highway in Mexico opened fire and killed six migrants, the defense ministry said Wednesday.

The patrol found 33 migrants from countries including Egypt, Nepal, Cuba, India and Pakistan, it said, without specifying the nationalities of those killed in the incident late Tuesday in southern Chiapas state.

The killing happened on the same day that Claudia Sheinbaum took office as Mexico's new president with a vow to respect human rights and avoid repression by security forces.

The two soldiers who opened fire have been removed from their duties pending an investigation, according to a statement.

It said the patrol saw a vehicle -- followed by two flatbed trucks like those used by criminals -- traveling at high speed and apparently attempting to flee.

"Military personnel reported hearing gunshots, so two soldiers activated their weapons, stopping one of the flatbed trucks," the statement said.

Thousands of migrants from many countries travel through Mexico each year in buses, overcrowded trailers and atop freight trains in an attempt to reach the US-Mexican border.

They run the risk of fatal accidents, kidnapping by criminal groups and extortion by corrupt officials.

In December 2021, 56 mostly Central American migrants were killed and dozens injured when a people smugglers' truck carrying around 160 people overturned in Chiapas.

More than 9,800 migrants have died or disappeared in the Americas since 2014, most of them while trying to reach the United States via Mexico, according to the International Organization for Migration.

In March 2023, 40 migrants died in a blaze at a detention centre in the border city of Ciudad Juarez started by a detainee who set fire to the mattress in his cell.

Security camera footage showed that once the fire broke out, neither immigration nor security personnel attempted to evacuate the migrants.

In recent years, Mexico has given an increased public security role to its military, which Amnesty International in April accused of using "unnecessary and excessive force."

Hurricane John hits Mexico's Pacific Coast, Authorities Issue Red Alert In Guerrero & Oaxaca Areas

Hurricane John hit Mexico's southern Pacific coast late on Monday as a major category 3 storm, with authorities warning residents to protect themselves against potentially deadly storm surges and torrential rain.

The storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (193 kph) made landfall south-southwest of Marquelia in the state of Guerrero, at about 9:15 pm Central Standard Time, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a statement.

Although slow-moving it had strengthened rapidly during the day, and President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador urged coastal dwellers to seek higher ground as the top disaster agency called a red alert in parts of Guerrero and neighboring Oaxaca state.

"Don't forget that life is the most important thing - material things can be replaced," the president wrote on social media.

The storm could bring "extraordinary" rainfall to parts of Guerrero and Oaxaca, in excess of 250 mm (10 inches), said national water commission Conagua, which forecast more than 150 mm (6 inches) to drench the southernmost state of Chiapas.

The Miami-based hurricane centre warned that the storm could bring life-threatening storm surges and flash flooding before moving inland over southern Mexico on Tuesday and weakening rapidly over the region's high terrain.

In the typically laid-back surfer getaway of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, residents hurried on Monday to tow in boats and put away beach chairs.

"We're very concerned," said restaurant owner Paula Sanchez, adding that hurricanes in the area had become stronger in recent years.

Education officials ordered schools to close in parts of Oaxaca and Guerrero as the storm neared, and state power firm CFE said it was moving worker convoys to Oaxaca ahead of John's arrival.

A hurricane warning has been declared for areas from the famous beach resort of Acapulco, which is still recovering from last year's Hurricane Otis, to as far east as the Oaxacan tourist hub of Huatulco.

A tropical storm warning covered areas further east from Huatulco to the major port of Salina Cruz, home of Mexican state-run oil company Pemex's largest domestic refinery.

The NHC warned that heavy rainfall from John may cause "significant and possibly catastrophic, life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides," in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca and southeast Guerrero through Thursday.
