The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday has moved the Madras High Court challenging a trial court order which discharged&nbsp;Kalanithi Maran,&nbsp;Dayanidhi Maran&nbsp;and seven others in the&nbsp;BSNL&nbsp;illegal telephone exchange case.

During the period between 2004 and 2007,&nbsp;Dayanidhi Maran&nbsp;had been accused of misusing his power and allegedly providing the wrong cell phone connections of Chennai&nbsp;BSNL&nbsp;to Sun Telecom, owned by his brother&nbsp;Kalanithi Maran.

The CBI alleged that the government has lost Rs 1.78 crore in revenue to&nbsp;Sun TV.

The CBI in 2013 filed a petition in a special court in this case against former general manager of Chennai&nbsp;BSNL&nbsp;(K.B. Brahmanathan), former Deputy General Manager of the company, Velusamy, former Union Minister&nbsp;Dayanidhi Maran, his personal secretary Gauthamman, Sun Television's Chief Technology Officer Kannan, Electrician Ravi,&nbsp;Sun TV President&nbsp;Kalanithi Maran.

Earlier on March 14 Chennai CBI judge Natarajan questioned the case and released the case.

The Supreme Court upheld the appeal of the CBI against this order, since the petition stated that the trial court did not formally examine the documents in regard to this case.

The trial court dismissed all of the cases filed by the petition seeking the release of four persons.

Former telecom minister&nbsp;Dayanidhi Maran&nbsp;and his brother&nbsp;Kalanithi Maran&nbsp;were discharged on March 14 by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court.

The inquiry should be ordered to cancel the order issued by the trial court and order the seven to face the trial.

The judge has been ordered to reply by 20th of this month.

The case pertains to alleged illegal setting up of the telephone exchange at&nbsp;Dayanidhi Maran's residence during his tenure as the Union Telecom Minister from 2004 to 2007. The 764 high-speed data lines of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) were then allegedly used for doing business transactions involving Sun Network, a channel run by his brother&nbsp;Kalanithi Maran.

The central agency had alleged that Dayanidhi had caused a loss of Rs 1.78 crore to the exchequer. More than 700 telecom lines had been installed at their residences in Boat Club and Gopalapuram here, the agency charged.

Other accused who have been discharged are former BSNL general manager K Brahmanathan, former deputy general manager M P Velusamy, Dayanidhi Maran&#39;s private secretary Gauthaman, and Sun TV officials.

During the hearing of the discharge petitions, the Maran brothers and others argued that they were innocent and did not commit any irregularities as alleged by the prosecution.

Senior counsel Kabil Sibal, who had appeared for the Maran brothers, had contended that the case was foisted on them.&nbsp;

Former communications minister Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanithi Maran will not undergo trial for alleged corruption in the Aircel-Maxis Case, a Delhi court ruled today (February 2). &#39;

They have been discharged because of lack of evidence against them, ANI reported. 
 
After the ruling, Dayanidhi Maran told ANI that he stood &quot;vindicated&quot; and that he had been the victim of a &quot;politically motivated case.&quot;

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had accused the Maran brothers of helping Malaysian communications service provider Maxis acquire telecom Aircel in exchange for a kickback of approximately Rs 700 crores.

C Sivasankaran, former owner of Aircel, has alleged that as telecom minister, Dayanidhi Maran withheld crucial permissions and clearances as a pressure tactic till he sold his company to Maxis in 2006.

The order was passed by Special Judge O P Saini who is exclusively dealing with the 2G spectrum allocation scam cases and those cases arising out of the investigation into it.

In 2014, the CBI had filed charges against the Maran brothers, Malaysian tycoon T Ananda Krishnan, his aide Ralph Marshall, Sun TV, UK&#39;s Astro All Asia Networks, &nbsp;Malaysia&#39;s South Asia Entertainment Holdings and Maxis Communications, and then additional secretary (Telecom) J S Sarma who died during the course of the probe.

They were chargesheeted for alleged offences punishable under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Prevention of Corruption Act, PTI reported.

It also discharged Kalanithi&#39;s wife Kavery Kalanithi, South Asia FM Ltd (SAFL) Managing Director K Shanmugam and two companies -- SAFL and Sun Direct TV Pvt Ltd (SDTPL) in a money laundering case filed by the ED.&nbsp;

The Enforcement Directorate alleged that South Asia FM Limited and Sun Direct TV Private Ltd had received Rs 742.58 crore as &quot;proceeds of crime&quot; from Mauritius-based firms and that the two firms were then allegedly controlled by Kalanithi Maran.

Dayanidhi Maran, from Tamil Nadu&#39;s DMK party, was telecom minister between 2004 and 2007. He was replaced in Dr Manmohan Singh&#39;s cabinet by A Raja, also from the DMK, who has been accused of being the mastermind behind the 2G spectrum allocation scam.

DMK leader Kanimozhi, daughter of party chief Karunanidhi, who is currently on bail in 2G cases, told ANI law had prevailed.

A special 2G court had in September last year dismissed the applications filed by the Maran brothers, challenging its jurisdiction to try the Aircel-Maxis deal case.

Pronouncing the order, the court had then said, &quot;There is no manner of doubt that by the standard of subject matter and periodicity of alleged crime, the case fairly/squarely falls within the description/ designation of the 2G scam.&quot;

The Maran brothers challenged the jurisdiction of the special 2G court in both cases lodged by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI.
