News brief: Big stories of the day

Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as Manchester City crushed Watford 6-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday to become the first team to win the English treble of league championship and both domestic cups in spectacular style.

The victory matched the competition's record final win -- set when Bury beat Derby County 116 years ago -- and was a fair reflection of yet another command performance by one of the best teams in the history of the English game.

Coming after they retained the Premier League title last week and won the League Cup in a penalty shootout over Chelsea, City's sixth FA Cup triumph made them the eighth team to win the prized League and FA Cup double and first since Chelsea in 2010.

"It was an incredible final for us and we have finished an incredible year," City manager Pep Guardiola told the BBC. "To all the people at the club a big congratulations, especially the players because they are the reason why we have won these titles."

City led 2-0 at halftime through David Silva and Sterling and effectively sealed the deal when Kevin de Bruyne came off the bench to smash in the third after 61 minutes.

Gabriel Jesus slotted the fourth before Sterling, who was brought up in Wembley, took centre stage with two more in the last 10 minutes to becoming the first player to score an FA Cup final hat-trick since Stan Mortensen in 1953 when Blackpool beat Bolton 4-3 in the "Matthews Final".

"I grew up here and saw this stadium get built. It's a massive dream come true to win trophies here," Sterling said.

"It shows what the manager is building here. He said we needed to get the mentality right and we did that and did it exceptionally well.

"It's been a long season with the World Cup as well but everyone has been on their A-game and come through."

Other than one early chance for Roberto Pereyra Watford never looked remotely capable of ending their 30-year winless run against City in their second appearance in the final having lost to Everton in 1984.

Long shot

It always looked a long shot for them to deliver a classic Cup upset. City had beaten Watford in the teams’ last 10 meetings, scoring 32 goals in the process and conceding six while Watford’s last win in the fixture came in 1989 in the old Second Division.

The underdogs did have the first clear chance after 11 minutes when Gerard Deulofeu broke and set up Pereyra on the edge of the box but Ederson flew off his line to save with his foot.

Other than that, they spent most of the first half camped deep in their own half and there was an air of inevitability when City struck after 26 minutes as diminutive duo Silva and Sterling won headers against big Watford defenders, allowing Silva to seize on the loose ball and fire past Heurelho Gomes.

They doubled the lead in the 38th minute when Bernardo Silva chipped a perfectly-weighted diagonal ball beyond the flailing Gomes for Jesus, starting ahead of Sergio Aguero, to steer back goalwards and almost over the line before Sterling lashed it into the net.

Watford had trailed Wolves 2-0 in the semi-final before coming back to win 3-2 in extra-time and though they started the second half with more attacking intent, hope was extinguished when City broke at pace, Sterling rolling the ball to De Bruyne who throw Gomes with a dummy before drilling the ball low into the net.

Watford, too late, threw men forward and were exposed when Jesus broke from his own half to tuck the ball under Gomes to make it 4-0 and Bernardo Silva was the provider again as Sterling arrived at the back post to smash in the fifth.

Local boy Sterling fittingly finished things off with his third three minutes from time.

It was a good result for Wolverhampton Wanderers too as they will now qualify for the Europa League via their seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

Manchester City crush Watford 6-0 in FA Cup final

Club captain Vincent Kompany announced Sunday that he is to leave Manchester City after 11 trophy-laden years.

The 33-year-old Belgian defender joined the club in the summer of 2008 and has made 360 appearances, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and two Community Shields.

He <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-crush-watford-6-0-in-fa-cup-final-219717">signed off with victory in the FA Cup final</a> on Saturday, where City thrashed Watford 6-0 to complete a domestic treble.

"As overwhelming as it is, the time has come for me to go. And what a season to bow out," said Kompany, who joined City from Hamburg.

"I feel nothing but gratefulness. I am grateful to all those who supported me on a special journey, at a very special club."

Kompany added: "I will never forget how all Man City supporters remained loyal to me in good times and especially bad times. Against the odds you have always backed me and inspired me to never give up.

"(Club owner) Sheikh Mansour changed my life and that of all the City fans around the world, for that I am forever grateful. A blue nation has arisen and challenged the established order of things, I find that awesome."

Kompany also paid tribute to his team-mates and manager Pep Guardiola.

"It's cliche to say it but it's also so true: without my team-mates, I would have never been here today," he said.

"We fought many battles together. Side by side. In good times and in bad. So to all of you, from the 2008-2009 squad to today's domestic treble winners: I owe you guys!

"A special word also to Pep and the backroom staff: you've been superb. You've followed me through so much hardship. You made me come back stronger every time. Thank you so much."

'An incredible year': Guardiola hails Manchester City's history boys

Manchester City star <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Kevin+De+Bruyne">Kevin De Bruyne</a> understands Liverpool players being disappointed at falling just short of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/five-key-players-that-led-manchester-city-to-english-premier-league-glory-218210">winning the Premier League title</a> but he does not have any sympathy for them.

The 27-year-old Belgian midfielder says simply his side were better than Liverpool.

City, who face Watford in the FA Cup final on Saturday chasing a historic domestic treble, retained their title by a point from Liverpool.

De Bruyne says no one would have felt sorry for City when they lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League quarter-final.

"No," he said this week when asked did he have sympathy for Liverpool.

"It's a remarkable effort but it means that we were just better than them in the end.

"I don't feel sorry for them because I don't think they'd feel sorry for us.

"I don't think anybody felt sorry about the way we went out of the Champions League."

He played a less influential role than in City's 2017/18 title triumph, starting just 11 league matches with bit parts in eight others due to two serious knee injuries and then a hamstring problem.

De Bruyne, who had a superb 2018 being named City's player of the 2017/18 season and then sparkled for Belgium as they finished a best ever third in the World Cup, says Liverpool feeling sore is understandable.

"I know how they feel because you’re going to feel disappointed," said De Bruyne, who is fit for selection for the Cup final.

"We'd feel the same if it happened to us. But we're still competitors. We want to win as much as they do but I can understand the feelings they have."

De Bruyne, whose high point in what he admits has "not been the most fun season" has come off the pitch with his second son being born, is a great believer in football being played through emotions.

However, he says the introduction of VAR -- it was that which cost City victory over Spurs in the Champions League as Raheem Sterling's late goal was ruled out for offside -- is removing that ingredient from the game.

"For me football is still a game of emotions," he said.

"I don't like how people try to take emotions out of the game, because what it's about is having fun, enjoying.

"If you win you're happy, if you lose you are sad. And that's what it's all about.

"That's why I also don't like the new things like VAR because it takes, for me, all the passion out and it becomes more –- you need be more like a robot these days."&nbsp;

'Don't feel sorry,' says Kevin De Bruyne on Liverpool's narrow title miss

Manchester City boss <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Pep+Guardiola">Pep Guardiola</a> talked about the exit rumours of winger Leroy Sane, who has been linked with a summer move to Bayern Munich.&nbsp;

While addressing the media, Guardiola said, "We are one year, one and a half years, eight months, then trying to extend his contract."

He added, "Why we want to extend the contract is because we want him, we are not going to extend the contract because we don't want him."&nbsp;

Leroy Sane, who has just two years to run on his current contract, played a crucial part in the club's back-to-back Premier League titles.&nbsp;

The 23-year-old has scored 39 goals in 131 games for City.&nbsp;

Guardiola also said that he understood why some players would want to leave the club, as the competition has become intense inside the team.

"It's not easy. If you want to play in four competitions, quadruple, you need Leroy, Sterling, we need Riyad (Mahrez), we need Bernardo (Silva), we need Kevin (De Bruyne), Fernandinho. We cannot compete in the quadruple with just two wingers," added the coach.&nbsp;

Manchester City's Pep Guardiola bags Premier League manager of the season award

Premier League champions Manchester City said Tuesday they were concerned &nbsp;"individuals intent on damaging" the club may be behind a news report that European football's financial regulators are poised to recommend <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/uefa-panel-to-recommend-man-city-champions-league-ban-report-218690">they be barred from the Champions League</a>.

European football's governing body UEFA and the Premier League launched an investigation this year after allegations made in German magazine Der Spiegel that the club broke Financial Fair Play rules.

The New York Times said Monday that members of the investigatory chamber of UEFA's financial control board, set up to analyze the accounts of clubs suspected of breaking cost-control regulations, met two weeks ago in Switzerland to finalize their conclusions.

"The investigatory panel’s leader, the former prime minister of Belgium Yves Leterme, will have the final say on the submission to a separate adjudicatory chamber, which could be filed as soon as this week. The body is expected to seek at least a one-season ban," said the Times.

However, City said they were fully co-operating with "the CFCB IC's (club financial control body investigatory chamber) ongoing investigation".

"In doing so the club is reliant on both the CFCB IC's independence and commitment to due process; and on UEFA's commitment of March 7 that it 'will make no further comment on the matter while the investigation is ongoing'," read their statement.

"The New York Times report citing 'people familiar with the case' is therefore extremely concerning.

"The implications are that either Manchester City's good faith in the CFCB IC is misplaced or the CFCB IC process is being misrepresented by individuals intent on damaging the club's reputation and its commercial interests. Or both."

Manchester City would also have the right to appeal such a ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

UEFA panel may recommend Manchester City Champions League ban: Report

Liverpool's Sadio Mane and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both scored twice on the final Sunday to share the Premier League's Golden Boot award for top scorer with last season's winner Mohamed Salah.

The achievement of the three African strikers left Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp especially proud as he has played such an important part in the development of the trio's careers.

They all ended on 22 goals for the league campaign after Senegalese forward Mane scored twice in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers to join his Egyptian teammate Salah.

Arsenal's Gabonese forward Aubameyang followed his midweek Europa League semi-final hat-trick in Valencia with a second-half double that helped the Gunners to a 3-1 win at Burnley.

Though Mane and Salah's 44 goals proved in vain for Klopp as his side lost out on the league title to Manchester City, who won 4-1 at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion, he had reason to smile.

"Auba too?" said the German, on learning that Aubameyang, his former signing at Borussia Dortmund, shared the accolade.

"Do they have three boots? It is good. They are all my players."

The 22-goal winning mark was the lowest since the 2010-11 season when Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov and Manchester City's Carlos Tevez shared the Golden Boot with 20 goals apiece.

Aubameyang was delighted over the trio's African connection, saying: "I share this trophy with two other guys I like, great players and African. We are representing Africa, that's cool."

Salah, who had scored 32 goals last season, was not as prolific this term as in his record-breaking 2017-18 campaign but both he and Mane finished a goal ahead of champions Manchester City's top marksman Sergio Aguero.

Of course, the Argentine, who matched Thierry Henry in scoring 20 or more goals in five straight seasons in the Premier League era, probably netted the most crucial goal with his equaliser at Brighton that set City on course for the title.

Manchester City received a heroes welcome back at their Etihad stadium late on Sunday after wrapping up the first back to back Premier League title in a decade. According to a detailed report by the White House, Biden had "perceptibly stiffer and less fluid" motion while walking than a year ago, and suffered "increasing frequency and severity of 'throat clearing' and coughing during public speaking engagements."

However, these two symptoms were not considered of immediate concern and did not appear to result from serious conditions as per his physician Kevin O'Connor.

Biden was vaccinated early on against Covid-19 and received a booster shot in September.

'Winning is so addictive,' says Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola

Five key players that led Manchester City to English Premier League glory

As the clock ticked down on Liverpool's unsuccessful bid to win their first English title in 29 years, a defiant refrain echoed around Anfield as all four sides of the famous old stadium chanted "We shall not be moved, we're the team that's gonna win the European Cup".

Liverpool may have fallen just a point short in the title race after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-retain-premier-league-title-218154">Manchester City retained the Premier League crown with their 4-1 victory at Brighton</a>.

But the Anfield faithful were determined to remind the world that Sunday's 2-0 win against Wolves in their last domestic game of the season wasn't the end of an incredible campaign for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's side hope to turn the agony of their title near-miss into the ecstasy of a sixth European Cup when they face Tottenham in the Champions League final on June 1.

Tuesday's incredible 4-0 win against Barcelona that erased a 3-0 first leg deficit and sent Liverpool to their second successive Champions League final, ensuring their last shot at winning the title for this season didn't feel quite so painful.

City's incredible consistency meant Liverpool have to settle for second place -- the fifth time they have been runners-up since they were last crowned kings of English football in 1990.

But Sadio Mane's double gave them 97 points -- the third highest total in Premier League history behind only City's tallies this season and last.

Liverpool, beaten only once all season in the league, also equalled the club's top-flight record of 30 wins, set over 42 matches in 1978-79, after recording a ninth consecutive league victory.

No wonder Liverpool were given a standing ovation when the final whistle sounded.

Ninety minutes earlier, under picture-perfect blue skies, fans arrived at Anfield more in hope than expectation.

Many Liverpool supporters were decked in the hastily made replicas of the 'Never give up' t-shirt Mohamed Salah wore during the post-match celebrations against Barcelona on Tuesday, while the PA system blared out Journey's 'Don't stop believing' before kick-off.

But, with even the most diehard Kopite expecting City to win at Brighton, the mood around Anfield was one of pride in Liverpool's season rather than genuine belief the afternoon would end in a title party.

With Liverpool and Tottenham's Champions League heroics showing anything is possible, Klopp had insisted one more football miracle couldn't be ruled out.

Ear-splitting noise

As ever, Liverpool made a fast start and Senegal winger Mane gave them hope of an astonishing finale in the 17th minute.

Mane started the move with a sweeping pass wide to Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right and the defender slipped the ball back to Jordan Henderson.

Delivering a precise return pass, Henderson sent Alexander-Arnold racing away and his low cross deflected into the path of Mane, who fired home from close-range.

The ear-splitting noise around Anfield spoke of renewed faith as Liverpool moved to the top of the as-it-stands table while City were being held by Brighton.

Ten minutes later there was an even louder roar when the news filtered through that Glenn Murray had put Brighton ahead.

Even Kenny Dalglish, the Liverpool manager when they last the won the title, was scrambling to check the score on his phone.

But, just as fans erupted in scarf-waving delight, seconds later they learned of Sergio Aguero's equaliser for City, triggering an agonised wail of frustration from supporters holding their heads in their hands.

After a false alarm when Liverpool fans celebrated what they wrongly thought was a second Brighton goal, it was the taunting cheers of Wolves supporters in one corner of the stadium that broke the news that City had scored again.

Needing a Brighton goal hundreds of miles away on the south-coast more than they needed to do anything else themselves, both Liverpool and the crowd were flat at the start of the second half.

When Riyad Mahrez effectively wrapped up the title with City's third goal, Wolves fans delighted in chanting "Raheem Sterling he's top of the league" in reference to the former Liverpool winger now playing for the champions.

By the time Mane turned in Alexander-Arnold's cross in the 81st minute, all thoughts had turned to the bid for European glory.

With Liverpool, who began the day one point behind, leading, the Anfield club would still have hoped for something extraordinary to happen in the south coast sunshine.

But when Riyad Mahrez drove an unstoppable shot past Brighton keeper Mathew Ryan's despairing dive just past the hour, City's fans could finally get the party started.

Ilkay Gundogan's majestic free-kick made it 4-1 to put the icing on another glorious day for City who are the first club to retain the Premier League title for 10 years.

But Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Aguero, Aymeric Laporte and Ilkay Gundogan scored to inspire the team towards their consecutive EPL title. Liverpool also won the match against Wolves but finished second in the title race. Congratulations to @ManCity! Your Premier League champions 2018/19 👏👏👏 pic.twitter.com/gGkHnacUYg — Premier League (@premierleague) May 12, 2019 × With Liverpool, who began the day one point behind, leading, the Anfield club would still have hoped for something extraordinary to happen in the south coast sunshine.

Manchester City pip Liverpool to Premier League title after beating Brighton 4-1

A thrilling Premier League title race comes down to the final day of the season on Sunday when Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool will have to make history if they are to overtake leaders Manchester City and end their 29-year domestic title drought.

City lead by a single point, so to get their hands on the trophy Liverpool will have to become the first team in the history of Europe's richest domestic club competition to move above the leaders on the final day.

Pep Guardiola's City are firm favourites to retain the title as they travel to Brighton, a team that narrowly avoided relegation. Liverpool take on Wolves at Anfield, dreaming of a second dramatic turnaround in a week after the memorable 4-0 win against Barcelona on Tuesday that propelled them into the Champions League final.

The last team to start the final day in first place and not win the title were in fact Liverpool in 1989, when Arsenal's 2-0 win at Anfield clinched the old First Division.

Whichever club does win will have earned the trophy the hard way.

City, on 95 points, have won their past 13 Premier League matches to wipe out a seven-point lead for Liverpool and are on the brink of becoming the first team to win successive titles since Manchester United in 2009.

Klopp's men, with 94 points, have recovered from a mid-season stumble to record eight straight victories.

To underline the two clubs' dominance, third-placed Chelsea only have 71 points going into their final game against Leicester City.

Liverpool, who have been English champions 18 times but have not won since the 1989-1990 season, face the scarcely credible scenario of ending the season with the third-highest points tally in Premier League history and a single defeat yet still missing out.

Abu Dhabi-owned City look almost certain to finish off the job and Guardiola said he has so much faith in his players that a pre-match team-talk will not be necessary.

"I don't have to say anything to motivate them. I think my speech on Sunday will be zero," he said.&nbsp;

"They want to win the Premier League. From what I saw in the training sessions, they want to win it, knowing that we can lose it.

"We saw in the Champions League in the last week why this game is amazing. But we want to win. So we are going to go out there at Brighton to try to win the game."

If City only draw and Liverpool beat Wolves, it would hand the title to the Reds.

City cannot quite match the record 100 points they mustered last season but they have shown their ability to dig deep in recent weeks.&nbsp;

Guardiola's side have racked up 91 goals this season, but three of their past four wins have been 1-0 victories, including the nervy match against Leicester on Monday settled by a Vincent Kompany strike. It kept City on course for a historic domestic treble, which would underline their status as the dominant force in the English game.

'It's not in our hands'

Klopp will have to re-focus his players' minds after their heroics against Barcelona as they cling to the hope that City will slip up against Brighton.

"We think about Wolves now," said Klopp, who despite his stellar reputation has not won a major trophy since 2012.

"(Barcelona) was for sure one of the best moments in football history, not only Liverpool. But it has nothing to do with the weekend except that we should be confident."

The Liverpool narrative has changed dramatically since they humiliated Lionel Messi's Spanish giants amid ecstatic scenes at Anfield.

Even if they fall short on Sunday they have the chance to become champions of Europe for a sixth time if they beat fellow Premier League club Tottenham in Madrid on June 1.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether Liverpool finish the weekend on top, Klopp insists he is happy with his team's progress after four years in charge.

"Sunday is our last Premier League game. If we can win it, it's not in our hands what we get, but it doesn't make our season a little bit less good. It's just a different finish," he said.

Behind the front two, all the issues in the Premier League are virtually done and dusted.

Barring a spectacular swing in goal difference, Tottenham will finish above Arsenal and mathematically secure the remaining Champions League spot alongside Chelsea, while the highest Manchester United can finish is fifth.

Wolves, in seventh place, cannot be caught and will earn a Europa League spot provided Watford do not beat City in the FA Cup final.

Man City on brink of Premier League glory, but Liverpool keep dreaming

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool's astonishing European fightback proves his side will not give up hope of winning the Premier League until <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-on-brink-of-premier-league-title-as-epic-race-reaches-climax-217323">Manchester City have the trophy in their hands</a> on Sunday.&nbsp;

Klopp's team staged arguably the greatest comeback in Champions League history on Tuesday when they thrashed Barcelona 4-0 to overturn a 3-0 semi-final first-leg deficit.&nbsp;

With an all-English Champions League final against Tottenham set for June 1, Liverpool can pour all their energy into one last push to win their first English title since 1990.&nbsp;

The Reds are one point behind leaders Manchester City heading into their final game of the season against Wolves at Anfield.&nbsp;

City will retain the title if they win at Brighton but a draw or loss for Pep Guardiola's men would open the door for Liverpool to be crowned champions if they defeat Wolves.&nbsp;

Given Brighton's lowly position, the odds are firmly on a City coronation, but Liverpool boss Klopp says this week's astonishing Champions League drama showed anything can happen when the pressure mounts.

Not only did Liverpool author a fightback for the ages, but Tottenham scored three times in their semi-final against Ajax to go through on away goals after trailing 3-0 on aggregate with just 35 minutes left.

"It's been a week of big football moments. But from our point of view it could be a big football moment on the weekend -- the week is not over yet," Klopp said.

"I think at the start of the week most people expected me to be sitting here and saying 'OK, after not being in the Champions League final, it's difficult to be champions'. Well now we are in the final and it is still difficult.

"We are not used to moments of glory but we win from time to time. Focus is not a problem. The only thing we can do is win this game."

In virtually any other season, Liverpool, who have 94 points and have lost only once in the league, would have been champions by now.

Having secured successive Champions League final appearances, the sting of failure will not be quite so sharp if Liverpool do not get a helping hand from Brighton this weekend.

But do not tell that to Klopp and his players.

Reflecting the togetherness and desire fuelling their remarkable season, Klopp revealed Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Jordan Henderson will all play through the pain barrier against Wolves.

'It's only pain'

Salah missed the Barcelona game with a concussion, while Henderson (knee) and Robertson (calf) both suffered injuries in that match.

"The famous three words of this week in the dressing room is 'It's only pain'. Very important for all the young lads to learn," Klopp said.

Liverpool fans will be glued to their phones for updates from Brighton as the drama unfolds on Sunday, but Klopp just wants his team to focus on Wolves.

"Maybe our supporters shouldn't celebrate the result before it's 3-0 for Brighton and 87 or 88 minutes played, all the rest is only information, nothing else," Klopp said.

The manager is still waiting for the first trophy of his four-year Liverpool reign, but that pales into comparison with his club's nearly three-decade title drought.

When Liverpool last won the league, it was their 10th title in 15 years -- a period of dominance that came to an unexpected end when Kenny Dalglish resigned as manager in February 1991.

In the barren years since then, Liverpool have finished second four times, most famously falling just short when Steven Gerrard's slip in a defeat against Chelsea allowed City to sneak past them in 2014.

While Liverpool have a special relationship with the European Cup, which they have won five times, this is a club raised on legendary boss Bill Shankly's demand that "the league is our bread and butter, that's the one I want".

Winning their 19th title would spark delirous celebrations across Merseyside and, after what he has witnessed this week, Klopp senses one last miracle could be on the cards.

"Both teams have to win their games. That's not sure (to happen) in the moment, so we have to focus on that," he said.

Jurgen Klopp backs Liverpool for Premier League miracle

Having absorbed everything Liverpool could throw at them in a titanic title battle, Manchester City will retain their crown with victory at Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

It is possible they could get by with a draw, or even an unlikely defeat, as they will start their final game one point ahead -- but Pep Guardiola's side know better than to expect gifts from Merseyside.

In all likelihood City will rack up a 14th successive Premier League win and Liverpool will beat Wolverhampton Wanderers to make it nine in a row and City will take the honours with 98 points to Liverpool's 97.

To put that into perspective those totals would be the second and third highest in the history of the Premier League -- behind only City's record-breaking 100-point haul last season when Guardiola delivered his first title.

If there was ever a case to share the trophy it is this season, such has been the excellence of both clubs.

Juergen Klopp's Liverpool finished 25 points behind City last year, but rose to the challenge and have bridged that gap playing football that at times has surpassed even the dazzling standards of Guardiola's side.

Liverpool have lost just once to City's four defeats and were briefly seven points in front in January, but in the run-in they have found that as well as the style that is Guardiola's blueprint, his team also have core of steel.

That manifested itself perfectly on Monday when, with Leicester City holding out at the Etihad Stadium, captain marvel Vincent Kompany thumped home a 30-metre screamer to send his side into the final day with their fate in their hands.

It was their third 1-0 victory in four games and, say what you like about Liverpool's armour-plated defence, City have conceded only three times in their last 13 games as they relentlessly went about becoming the first club to retain the Premier League title since Manchester United 10 years ago.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson admitted his side need a "miracle" to win the title now, but in a week in which they performed one to beat Barcelona 4-0, overhauling a three-goal deficit to reach the Champions League final, it would be folly to dismiss the notion of him raising the trophy aloft to end Liverpool's 29-year wait since they last reigned supreme.

"City are a great team, but so are we. We've competed right to the very end," Henderson said.

"Whoever gets it will deserve it. From our point of view, we couldn't have done any more."

It is only the eighth time in the Premier League era that the title has been decided on the final day.

Unusually it is the only issue realistically at stake.

Huddersfield Town, Fulham and Cardiff City have already been relegated while Chelsea are certain of a top-four finish and Tottenham Hotspur can only be denied by an improbable scenario in which they lose to Everton at home and Arsenal win at Burnley and also bridge an eight-goal inferior goal difference.

Even the "best of the rest" issue is decided with Wolves guaranteed seventh spot in their first season back in the top flight.

So there will be no distractions as Europe's most absorbing title race in years plays out its final acts simultaneously on the south coast and Merseyside.

Manchester City on brink of Premier League title as epic race reaches climax

Just as nerves and an enterprising Leicester City threatened to wreck Manchester City's title hopes, their long-serving captain Vincent Kompany stepped up and fired home in the most emphatic fashion.

The 1-0 win over Brendan Rodgers' side now means City can secure the Premier League title with a victory at Brighton on Sunday.

City are on top of the table with a one-point advantage over Liverpool, who host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday and know that their only chance of winning the title is if City stumble on the south coast.

It had been a nervy and frustrating night for the home crowd until Kompany's 25-metre drive sent the Etihad Stadium wild in a mixture of relief and joy after their longest wait this Premier League season for an opening goal at home.

The 33-year-old Belgian defender picked up the ball just over the half-way line with the Leicester defence camped deep, and he unleashed a stunning drive that flew into the top corner of Kasper Schmeichel's goal.

It was the first time that Kompany has scored a goal for City from outside the box and there could not have been a better moment for such unlikely inspiration.

Leicester had been good value in the first half as they tested City's defensive solidity and frustrated their forward movement.

There was a definite sign of nerves impacting on Pep Guardiola's side as they struggled to find their usual fluidity and invention.

TENSION SPILLED

The crowd's tension spilled onto the field and the occasional murmurs suggested that self-doubt was creeping in.

But after the break, City stepped up the tempo and the introduction of Leroy Sane for Phil Foden in the 56th minute allowed them to stretch the Foxes defence and penetrate the penalty area.

But still chances were at a premium and when Sergio Aguero managed a close range poke goalwards in the 69th minute, Schmeichel was up to the task.

Seven minutes later Kompany took centre stage but there was still time for a scare as Leicester had an opportunity to level in the 87th minute but substitute Kelechi Iheanacho, a former City player, was unable to find the target from a promising position.

City, who have now won 13 straight league games, have 95 points to Liverpool's 94 and also have a plus-four goal difference over Juergen Klopp's side.

Unless Brighton can produce the upset that has so far failed to materialise in the run-in of this epic duel, Liverpool, beaten just once this league campaign, will have to settle for the runners-up spot.

Kompany, who has won three Premier League titles with the club since 2012, was overcome by the moment and was in tears as he took part in the lap of appreciation after the game.

"I'm really happy for the team. This club, it's part of how we have been successful to have goals like this, moments like this. We always believe that we have a chance and can play for the last second," said Kompany.

"We were putting pressure on, upping the tempo but found the last pass difficult. They defended really well and it was going to take something special. Now we have a final to play in Brighton, Nothing is won yet," Kompany added.

Kompany's stunner moves Manchester City close to Premier League title

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola considers Liverpool among the best sides he has faced in his managerial career with the two clubs set to fight for the Premier League title on the final day of the season.

Liverpool have a two-point lead over the defending champions but Guardiola's men have a game in hand and meet Leicester City at home later on Monday.

Liverpool have lost only once in the league this season and are also in the Champions League semi-finals, and Guardiola mentioned Juergen Klopp's side in the same breath as Barcelona's 2014-15 treble-winning team.

"In my career as a manager, I played against incredible sides," Guardiola told The Telegraph. "There are two that were, 'Wow'. One is Barcelona with Luis Enrique, with Neymar, (Lionel) Messi and (Luis) Suarez up front.

"The other is this Liverpool. I think they're the best two sides I've faced as a manager. That's why, arriving at this stage... after 100 points (last season), is the most satisfaction I've had as a manager."

Guardiola also praised his squad's resilience to claw their way back into the title race when they found themselves seven points behind the league leaders in January.

"When you're seven points behind, you could have said, 'It's done' and just think, 'We did it last season'," Guardiola added. "We did the opposite of that.

"The difference is Liverpool. We did the same job (as last season). It's incredible what we have done, but it will make more sense if we are able to lift the Premier League."

The Spaniard, who had previously managed Barcelona and Bayern Munich, said the English top flight was the toughest league he had managed in.

"It's the toughest league I've ever played as a manager, for the quality from the rivals, no doubt," Guardiola said.

"That's why being there is incredible but, of course, only one will take the prize and the other one will be at home sad."

One is Barcelona with Luis Enrique, with Neymar, (Lionel) Messi and (Luis) Suarez up front. "The other is this Liverpool. I think they're the best two sides I've faced as a manager. That's why, arriving at this stage... after 100 points (last season), is the most satisfaction I've had as a manager." Guardiola also praised his squad's resilience to claw their way back into the title race when they found themselves seven points behind the league leaders in January. "When you're seven points behind, you could have said, 'It's done' and just think, 'We did it last season'," Guardiola added. "We did the opposite of that. "The difference is Liverpool. We did the same job (as last season). It's incredible what we have done, but it will make more sense if we are able to lift the Premier League." The Spaniard, who had previously managed Barcelona and Bayern Munich, said the English top flight was the toughest league he had managed in. "It's the toughest league I've ever played as a manager, for the quality from the rivals, no doubt," Guardiola said. "That's why being there is incredible but, of course, only one will take the prize and the other one will be at home sad."

Liverpool one of the best teams I've faced as manager: Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola does not expect Liverpool to be affected by their Champions League semi-final defeat by Barcelona as they resume the battle for the Premier League title with his Manchester City side.

Juergen Klopp's men were <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/lionel-messi-leads-barcelona-over-liverpool-in-champions-league-semi-final-first-leg-215187">outplayed in a 3-0 loss at the Nou Camp</a> in the first leg on Wednesday, and travel to Newcastle United in their penultimate game of the league campaign on Saturday (May 4).

"I think the game was incredibly good. The game for the semi-final for the Champions League, both sides were incredible. Liverpool were outstanding," Guardiola told reporters ahead of City's home clash against Leicester City on Monday.&nbsp;

Leicester will arrive at the Etihad Stadium with Jamie Vardy in fine form, finding the net 11 times in his last 11 league appearances.

Guardiola hailed Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers' impact on Vardy's style of play since the Northern Irishman took charge at the King Power Stadium in February.

"Brendan (Rodgers) shows his incredible qualities as a manager, the fact that in just two or two and a half months his team is already playing the way he wants to play. Everybody in their positions, his movements are always well coordinated and of course, with incredible quality," he said.

City know that a win over Leicester, followed by victory at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion on the final day of the campaign will ensure City a second consecutive league title.

Guardiola confirmed playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is out of contention for Monday's clash. The Belgium midfielder has not featured since suffering a hamstring injury in the 1-0 league win over Tottenham Hotspur last month.

The Spanish manager is also unsure about Fernandinho's availability for the match, with the Brazilian midfielder still recovering from a knee injury.

European hangover won't derail Liverpool's title bid, says Pep Guardiola

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling was voted Footballer of the Year in the annual vote of members of the Football Writers' Association, announced on Monday.

City forward Sterling has been a key member of the City team which is two wins away from defending their Premier League title and has also been a prominent voice in the campaigns against racism in the game.

Nikita Parris won the FWA's Women's Footballer of the Year award -- like Sterling, the 25-year-old plays for Manchester City and England.

The FWA said Sterling collected 62 per cent of the vote of more than 400 members of the organisation which brings together journalists and others in the football media.

Sterling had 100 votes more than Liverpool's Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk, who on Sunday was named the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year.

Other players to receive votes from FWA members were Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal), Bernardo Silva and David Silva (Manchester City).

FWA chair Carrie Brown pointed out that the criteria for the award is for a player who by "precept and example" is considered Footballer of the Year.

"To have been voted the 2019 Footballer of the Year by our members, and with such an overwhelming majority, clearly acknowledges the contribution from a player over one season," said Brown.

"But it also recognises the huge impact of Raheem's courage to challenge preconceptions and fight racism, which will leave a legacy not just for future generations in football but society as a whole."

Parris won by a narrow margin from Arsenal and Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema who was named PFA Women's Player of the Year.

Raheem Sterling wins Football Writers' award

It was nervy and scrappy but a 1-0 win at Burnley on Sunday was enough to return Manchester City to the top of the Premier League and keep them on track for back-to-back titles.

Sergio Aguero's 63rd-minute goal at Turf Moor moved City onto 92 points, restoring their one-point advantage over Liverpool at the summit with just two games remaining.

Pep Guardiola's side now need to win their final matches at home to Leicester City and away to Brighton and Hove Albion to retain the title and break the hearts of second-placed Liverpool who have tracked them all the way.

The victory was the 12th win in a row for City, who have shown no signs of giving Juergen Klopp's Liverpool, who have lost just once all campaign, the slightest opening.

Yet the afternoon did provide some encouragement for those in Merseyside following the match, with City frustrated until the second half when they broke through with an uncharacteristically scrappy goal.

Aguero's shot was chested out and cleared by Matt Lowton on the goalline but technology ruled the effort had crossed -- a minor compensation for Guardiola after a VAR video review had led to his team's elimination from the Champions League.

It was an unusual sight to see Guardiola take off two forwards in the latter stages and replace them with central defenders and while the City boss joked that he was "trembling" at the end, his counterpart Sean Dyche claimed the Spaniard had been yelling for his team to get the ball in the corner.

City had enough possession and chances to have put the game to bed well before the tense final minutes, but even if Burnley created very little attacking threat, Guardiola was leaving nothing to chance.

"In the first half we didn't create too much but of course it is what it is," said Guardiola, who pointed the finger at a dry pitch and what he viewed as long grass for his side lacking their usual slickness.

"Ninety-two points is incredible - it is in our hands, we must win our next two games and our next one against Leicester."

"We didn't concede one shot on target or one corner, we are a small team but we are smart, in the first half the pitch was so dry and it was slow but in the second half we knew we had to score our goal.

"In the last minutes anything can happen, always it is difficult if you cannot close the game," he said.

Fierce Blast

The visitors struggled to get into their usual rhythm in the first half but came out strongly after the break and Burnley keeper Tom Heaton did well to keep out a fierce blast from Sergio Aguero at the near post.

Burnley were fortunate to escape a penalty appeal when a drive from Bernardo Silva appeared to strike the arm of Burnley's Ashley Barnes.

Heaton did well to keep out another fierce drive, this time from Bernardo Silva, before City finally took the lead.

Raheem Sterling went close to a second but Burnley defender Ben Mee produced a wonderful goalline clearance to keep the Clarets in the game.

Burnley, however, pushed hard at the end with Guardiola bringing on John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi as City held firm to claim the three points.

Sterling was recognised for his fight against racism in the sport and for using his platform to call for more action to be taken.

He had said this month that more players needed to speak out when they suffered racism to eradicate it from the game.

"I was just speaking about my personal experiences, I didn’t expect it to get so much attention, I just wanted to bring it to the attention of my audience on Instagram," Sterling said as he received the award from his England coach Gareth Southgate.

"It’s been really pleasing to see people listening and trying and do better.

Partly what happens when you try to do good things is you set examples for the next generation coming through."

The 24-year-old also signed a manifesto earlier this week where he said clubs should be handed automatic nine-point deductions and ordered to play three games behind closed doors if their supporters indulged in racist behaviour.

Sterling, who began his career at Liverpool, said the example of his former captain Steven Gerrard encouraged him to try to develop into a role model.

"Coming from Liverpool I had people around me like Steven Gerrard that I looked up to and I’m looking at him and thinking what can I do within myself to be half the person and player he was'," Sterling&nbsp;added.

"You take little things and each year you try and develop them and become better not just on the field but off it as well,” Sterling said.

Dow Jones Sports Intelligence, the founder of the award, congratulated Sterling for the impact his actions had in addressing racism and other "social issues of diversity and inclusivity".

"He has given new confidence and a voice to other footballers and athletes to speak out when once they may not have done so," Dow Jones head of sport Simon Greenberg said in a statement issued on Thursday.

"He has sparked the sports media and the industry more widely to consider conscious or sub-conscious racial bias in their actions", Greenberg said.

Man City's Raheem Sterling honoured with Integrity and Impact Award for fighting racism

Manchester City took a big step towards retaining the Premier League title with a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday sending them back to the top of the table.

City have 89 points, one more than rivals Liverpool, with both teams having three games to play -- and none of them against top six opponents.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side remain in sixth place with 64 points, outside the Champions League qualification slots as the early promise of the Norwegian's reign dissipates.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hailed his team for the way they have responded to the bitter blow of exiting from the Champions League with two crucial victories in their title bid.

City went out of the European competition on away goals to Tottenham Hotspur in dramatic fashion last week but dusted themselves off to beat Spurs in the Premier League on Saturday&nbsp;before Wednesday's win.

The win over United was the 11th straight in the league for City as they follow-up last season's record-breaking title win with another campaign of extraordinary quality and consistency.

Solskjaer made no attempt to disguise the gulf in quality between his team and Manchester City, describing Pep Guardiola's side as "the best team in the country".

Solskjaer had demanded his players react to their 4-0 loss to Everton on Sunday (April 21) and United did begin the match with aggression, battling hard until City went ahead through Bernardo Silva in the 54th minute.

United have lost seven of their last nine games in all competitions, a run of form which contrasts markedly with the positive start to Solskjaer's reign in December.

A Champions League spot remains within their grasp, however, with United sat in sixth place, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who they play on Sunday.

Manchester City, Liverpool dominate PFA team of the year

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has asked his players to be calm after their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-take-big-step-towards-title-with-derby-win-at-united-213323">crucial win over Manchester United</a> on Wednesday that boosted their Premier League title bid.&nbsp;

With three games left in the season, Manchester City have moved one point ahead of Liverpool and will become the first team to retain the Premier League title since Manchester United in 2009 if the team wins its last three games - against Burnley, Leicester and Brighton.&nbsp;

Guardiola said, "It's time to be calm. Don't read (the newspapers), don't switch on the TV, don't listen to the radio. Be calm, recuperate, sleep good and go to Burnley on Sunday."&nbsp;

Though Guardiola said that Liverpool, who have lost just once this season, are also worthy champions.&nbsp;

"Both teams deserve the title. But it can be just one. The team that is going to lose can't have regrets because they have given everything," he said.&nbsp;

"If we drop points and they have the chance to win, they are going to win the (rest of their) games," he added.&nbsp;

Pep also hailed his players as they have responded to the bitter blow of exiting from the Champions League.&nbsp;

"That is the most incredible detail for these players. You cannot imagine how tough it was to go out of this beautiful (Champions League) competition when we felt it was there, it was really, really tough," Guardiola said.&nbsp;

"We had Tottenham at home, it wasn’t the best performance, but we had the sunshine, to stay alive in the Premier League... the pressure we had and the way we reacted. That is sometimes more important.&nbsp;

With three games left in the season, Manchester City have moved one point ahead of Liverpool and will become the first team to retain the Premier League title since Manchester United in 2009 if the team wins its last three games - against Burnley, Leicester and Brighton. Guardiola said, "It's time to be calm. Don't read (the newspapers), don't switch on the TV, don't listen to the radio. Be calm, recuperate, sleep good and go to Burnley on Sunday." Though Guardiola said that Liverpool, who have lost just once this season, are also worthy champions. "Both teams deserve the title. But it can be just one. The team that is going to lose can't have regrets because they have given everything," he said. "If we drop points and they have the chance to win, they are going to win the (rest of their) games," he added. Pep also hailed his players as they have responded to the bitter blow of exiting from the Champions League. City went out of the European competition on away goals to Tottenham Hotspur in dramatic fashion last week but dusted themselves off to beat Spurs in the Premier League on Saturday before Wednesday's 2-0 Manchester derby win over rivals United. "That is the most incredible detail for these players. You cannot imagine how tough it was to go out of this beautiful (Champions League) competition when we felt it was there, it was really, really tough," Guardiola said. "We had Tottenham at home, it wasn’t the best performance, but we had the sunshine, to stay alive in the Premier League... the pressure we had and the way we reacted. That is sometimes more important. Our brilliant Blues! 💙#MUNMCI highlights ▶️ https://t.co/BxkF81WgGs 🔵 #mancity pic.twitter.com/nn6M07LaBc — Manchester City (@ManCity) April 24, 2019 × "Then we come here, our neighbours, the most prestigious team in England... winning with the pressure we had and being there, it was fantastic," the Spaniard added.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola requests players to be 'calm' after derby win

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that his side still hopes for the top four finish in the English Premier League despite <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-take-big-step-towards-title-with-derby-win-at-united-213323">losing the Manchester derby</a>.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Manchester City kept the destination of the league title in its own hands by beating Man Utd 2-0 on Wednesday to climb back above Liverpool with three games left this season.&nbsp;

United slumped to a seventh loss in its last nine matches under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thanks to strikes in a 12-minute span from Bernardo Silva and substitute Leroy Sane, with United goalkeeper David De Gea partially at fault for both goals.&nbsp;

While Solskjaer said, "Three games away from the end of the season, we're three points behind the top four. No one would have given us a chance two or three months ago and it's been a massive effort by everyone."

"My job to make sure that I have a group, and a squad, and a team that will do that for us. That's my job to find out who wants to sacrifice enough to be here," he added.&nbsp;

The Norwegian said that his side needs to "stick together" and focus on the upcoming matches.&nbsp;

"I'm concerned about the lack of results that we get and in times like these it's not time to point fingers at anyone and blame anyone. We've got to stick together and the strange reality is that we're still in with a shout for the top four," said Solskjaer.&nbsp;

We're still in with a shout for the top four, says Manchester United boss Solskjaer

Pep Guardiola has dismissed suggestions by Manchester United counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that his <a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/title-top-four-and-pride-at-stake-in-massive-manchester-derby-212838&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=0ahUKEwj_4br8iOjhAhUs7XMBHdFdAa0QFggFMAA&amp;client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;usg=AOvVaw2-iqXJ358RhAHAvEcbK8JA">Manchester City</a> players use tactical fouls high up the pitch to disrupt their opponents' rhythm and stop them from launching counterattacks.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's Premier League Manchester derby, Solskjaer warned United that City would press hard and foul them in areas of the pitch where they were less likely to receive yellow cards.

"We've got to be ready for their pressing so we've got to defend well, got to be ready for (their) aggression, they will snap at your heels and kick you," Solskjaer said. "There will be fouls, absolutely no doubt about it."

"You don't get the yellow cards (there), do you? But that's just because they commit so many players forward and you can clearly see that they've got them in that mould of trying to win the ball back, and they do make fouls", he said.

Guardiola said Solskjaer's comments could be viewed as an attempt to influence referee Andre Marriner, who will be in charge of the game at Old Trafford.

"That is the reason why, of course," the Spaniard told reporters. "But I don't think it will be successful because we don't do it."

"My side is not built like that, not at all. In 10 seasons as a manager, I never prepared for a game thinking about these things. Never'', he added.

"In football, you sometimes (foul) because the actions are so fast. But I never said we should do it to punish an opponent or cancel them", the United boss said.

City are two points behind leaders Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title and winning their game in hand at sixth-placed United will lift them to the top of the standings with three games remaining.

Guardiola shrugs off Solskjaer's 'foul' claims on his team ahead of the Manchester derby

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said Manchester United's home ground Old Trafford is no longer the fortress it used to be as City look to win all three points and take the lead in the Premier League title race.

City, who are two points behind league leaders Liverpool, play their game in hand at sixth-placed United on Wednesday (April 24), with the home side looking to make up for lost ground in their own battle for a top-four spot.

United have lost only one league game at home this season but Guardiola, whose side have won on their last two visits to Old Trafford, was confident albeit wary of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team that are hurting after a 4-0 loss at Everton.

City will be without influential midfielder Kevin De Bruyne after he suffered a hamstring injury in the 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend. The Belgian has already missed many games this season with knee and thigh injuries.

Guardiola also addressed speculation around Riyad Mahrez who was reported by British media to be unhappy with his playing time at the club. The Algerian winger has started only 13 of City's 34 league games this season.
