He reported his find to authorities and researchers from the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The OeAW have concluded that there are at least three Stone Age mammoths buried under the house in the village of Gobelsburg, in the district of Krems, west of Vienna.

"I thought it was just a piece of wood left by my grandfather. But then I dug it out a bit, and then I remembered that in the past my grandfather said he had found teeth. And then I immediately thought it was a mammoth," said Pernerstorfer, as quoted by BBC.

Researchers have been excavating the bones since the middle of May, and they believe the bones are between 30,000 and 40,000 years old.

"Such a dense bone layer of mammoths is rare," says Hannah Parow-Souchon, who is leading the excavation. "It's the first time we've been able to investigate something like this in Austria using modern methods."

"During the excavation there, the cellars in question were completely cleared out. Other comparable sites in Austria and neighbouring countries were mostly excavated at least 100 years ago and have largely been lost to modern research," said the institute in a statement.

Researchers, as per the report, believe that the mammoths could have died on the spot they were found at, possibly hunted by humans. Once excavated, the bones will be taken to the Vienna Museum of Natural History for research.

“We'll see if anybody out there's got a sense of adventure," he said, adding, “Let me tell you something about mammoth bones, mammoth tusks —they're extremely valuable.”

And since then, a hoard of treasure seekers has been assembling at the river in the hopes of uncovering those potential valuable troves.

“I think the chances are just as good as the lottery. And people buy those tickets every day,” said Don Gann, 35, of New Jersey, a commercial diver who's been out on the water since early last week.

The remains, which were found by reindeer herders on a remote island, will be analysed by expert scientists at the&nbsp;Russia's North-Eastern Federal University (NEFU) in Yakutsk. The researchers at NEFU are leading the research of bringing back the extinct species of woolly mammoths and rhinos.

Scietists from all over the world will be invited to take part in this research, with NEFu holding the lead role.&nbsp;"It is necessary to carry out radiocarbon analysis to determine the precise age of the bear," said Dr Maxim Cheprasov, senior researcher, candidate of biological sciences at the Mammoth Museum laboratory in Yakutsk.

Experts believe the mammoths were drawn to the area by food and water provided by a lake that existed in prehistoric times. &nbsp; &nbsp;

"The place had a lot of natural resources, enough for these individuals to survive for a long time and for many generations," said archaeologist Araceli Yanez.

In winter the lake area became muddy, trapping the giant mammals who starved, she said.

"It attracted a large number of mammoths, and they got stuck, as is the case with this individual, and died here," Yanez added.

The lake was also very good for preserving the remains.

The giant skeleton -- mounted in a forward walking position with its enormous curved tusks with tones of caramel and ivory facing slightly downward -- was bought by the chief executive of a French waterproofing company whose logo is of the prehistoric mammal. "We are going to display it in the lobby of our firm," said Pierre-Etienne Bindschedler, the CEO of Soprema. "I think we have enough room". Bindschedler bought the piece for 548,250 euros at the Aguttes auction house. One of the largest specimens ever found, the mammoth skeleton measures a little over three metres (10 feet) in height and was estimated to sell for at least 450,000 euros because of its "fine condition", remarkable because it retained 80 percent of its original bones. Experts believe the animal weighed about 1,400 kilos. The skeleton, unearthed about 10 years ago in northwest Siberia, belonged to a hunter who had preserved the remains at his home. Woolly mammoths were once among the most common herbivores in North America and Siberia but came under threat from increased hunting pressure and a warming climate. They disappeared from the Earth 3,700 years ago. Mammoth remains are frequently discovered in Siberia and Russia's extreme northern regions where they are preserved in the frozen earth. The first complete mammoth skeleton to be sold at auction in France garnered 150,000 euros in 2006. Another was sold in October 2012 in Paris for 240,750 euros at an auction organised by Sotheby's.
