"We needed that win obviously and every game now is a final. We suffered of course, we saw the quality of Inter Miami but we knew also they had some problems in counter-attack. It was a perfect night for us," added the 31-year-old.

Charlotte kept their post-season hopes alive with a 3-0 win over the East's bottom club Toronto with two first-half penalties from Polish forward Karol Swiderski.

Although the North Carolina side are in 13th place, they are just two points behind Montreal, who occupy ninth place, the last playoff spot in the East.

The New York Red Bulls kept themselves in contention with a 2-1 win at Eastern Conference leaders Cincinnati.

Cincinnati had already secured the top seed in the playoffs and the home field advantage that brings and having started with several key players on the bench they fell behind to early goals from Frankle Amaya and Elias Monoel before Luciano Acosta, on as a sub, got them back in the game with a 68th minute penalty.

D.C United's playoff hopes faded further with Wayne Rooney's team suffering a 3-0 loss at Austin, a win which keeps the Texan side in contention for a post-season berth in the West.

Major League Soccer: Inter Miami's playoff hopes fade after Chicago rout sans Messi

Inter Miami shrugged off an injury concern over Lionel Messi to beat Toronto FC 4-0 on Wednesday with Robert Taylor scoring twice as they boosted their playoff hopes.

Messi returned to the starting line-up after skipping Saturday's 5-2 defeat at Atlanta due to muscle fatigue but he had to leave the field in the 38th minute, looking uncomfortable.

His former Barcelona team-mate, Spaniard Jordi Alba who had also sat out the trip to Atlanta, had limped off three minutes earlier in the game.

"They had to come out, we will evaluate them in the coming days," Miami coach Gerardo Martino told broadcasters Apple TV at the interval.

Despite the blow of losing their star and one of their most influential players, Miami swept aside the Eastern Conference's bottom club with some ease.

Facundo Farias opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a blistering volley after Toronto keeper Tomas Romero had meekly palmed out a Noah Allen cross.

Substitute Robert Taylor then made it 2-0 in the 54th minute with an outstanding individual strike, dribbling across the box from the left before unleashing a sharply angled drive back into the bottom corner.

Taylor then turned provider, releasing another substitute Benjamin Cremaschi who fired through the legs of Romero to make it 3-0.

Finnish international Taylor completed his impactful performance with the fourth, bringing down a floated pass over the top from Farias and blasting home from close range.

The performance of Taylor, Cremaschi and other substitutes will give Miami confidence that they can maintain a push towards the post-season, even if Messi and Alba may need more time to get back to fitness.

"It shows guys are willing to step up, shows the depth we have on our team, and the collective mentality we approach each game with," said goalkeeper Drake Callender.

Tenth placed New York City kept their playoff hopes alive with a 2-0 win at home to second placed Orlando City.

Eastern Conference leaders Cincinnati needed a goal deep in stoppage time from Argentina Luciano Acosta to earn a point at eighth placed Montreal.

MLS: Despite Lionel Messi early exit, Inter Miami put four past Toronto

Inter Miami rested Lionel Messi and suffered their first defeat since the Argentine joined the club, with a 5-2 hammering at Atlanta United damaging their playoff hopes on Saturday.

Messi had not made the trip to Atlanta, after a busy run of games since making his Miami debut in late July.

Miami coach Gerardo 'Tata' Martino said after the loss that Messi had been suffering from "muscle fatigue" and that it would have been "very reckless to bring him to play this game".

The 36-year-old sat out Argentina's World Cup qualifier against Bolivia in La Paz on Tuesday but watched his team-mates from the bench.

With no Messi last week, Miami defeated Sporting Kansas City 3-2 but this time it was a very different story for Martino's team.

Miami went ahead in the 25th minute with a superbly taken goal from in-form Ecuadorean striker Leonardo Campana .

But the response from Atlanta, sixth in the Eastern Conference, was emphatic with three goals in the space of eight minutes.

A glancing header from French midfielder Tristan Muyamba, which struck the inside of the post, was ruled to have crossed the line by the assistant referee.

Five minutes later, Atlanta had the lead when Brazilian winger Xande Silva dribbled to the byline and his pull-back was turned into his own net by Miami defender Kamal Miller.

Miami's defence, without former Spain international left-back Jordi Alba, were reeling and Brooks Lennon added the third in the 44th minute with a sweetly struck shot.

Miami got back in the game in the 54th minute through a Campana penalty but while they have made a habit of comebacks with Messi, there was no such revival this time.

As they pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Atlanta caught them on the counter with Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis slotting home his 14th goal of the season, bringing him level with Nashville's Hany Mukhtar joint top scorer in MLS.

Another well-worked break resulted in the fifth in the 89th minute with Lobjanidze again the creator, setting up Tyler Wolff to blast home.

Miami remain next to bottom of the Eastern Conference, six points behind D.C United who occupy ninth place, the last playoff spot.

Martino defended the decision to leave Messi and Alba - who he said also had muscle fatigue - at home ahead of a busy run of games with league matches on Wednesday and Sunday before the US Open Cup final on September 27.

"We risked worse consequences if they came to play this game. It has nothing to do with the (artificial) surface," said the coach.

<h2>Comebacks</h2>

Eastern Conference leaders Cincinnati, already assured of a post-season berth, battled back for a 2-2 draw at last year's MLS Cup runners-up the Philadelphia Union.

A Jose Martinez goal and a penalty from Daniel Gazdag had put Philadelphia in command but the impressive Aaron Boupendza pulled a goal back for Cincinnati, in the fourth minute of the second half.

The visitors grabbed a point when Boupendza found Brandon Vazquez with a magnificent low ball and the USA striker found the net.

In-form Orlando City produced an even more impressive comeback at home to Columbus, winning 4-3 after trailing 3-1.

Ramiro Enrique levelled in the 86th minute with an opportunist strike and then won the game in the seventh minute of stoppage time, taking advantage of chaos in the Crew defence.

Earlier the 'Hudson River derby' between New York City and New York Red Bulls ended goalless.

Later on Saturday, Los Angeles FC host cross-city rivals L.A. Galaxy in their derby.

Inter Miami delivered the most impressive win of their Lionel Messi era, 3-1 over Major League Soccer champions Los Angeles FC on Sunday, with two assists from the Argentine boosting their playoff hopes.

Goals from Argentine forward Facundo Farias, Spanish full-back Jordi Alba and substitute Leonardo Campana of Ecuador earned Miami a statement victory that moves them within nine points of the playoff places with nine games remaining.

Messi's first MLS appearance in Los Angeles, attracted a capacity crowd, swollen by a host of A-List celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Selena Gomez and Prince Harry.

But the home fans left frustrated as last year's MLS Cup winners wasted a series of chances.

French-born Gabon international Denis Bouanga had the first opportunity, bursting goalwards but with Mexican Carlos Vela unmarked to his right, unwisely chose to shoot and his effort was blocked -- to the fury of his teammate.

Bouanga had another great chance in the 11th minute after a fine through ball from former Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini but Miami keeper Drake Callender pulled off an excellent save.

After surviving those early scares, Miami took the lead in the 14th minute when Tomas Aviles split the LAFC defence to find Farias who beat John McCarthy with a low shot on the slide.

Miami struggled to contain Bouanga but the LA forward was again unable to make the most of his opportunity when he burst through the middle but fired wide.

Mario Gonzalez should have done better when he was given space for a shot but blasted into the side-netting as Miami were increasingly threatening on the counter.

Paraguay midfielder Diego Gomez broke forward and played a clever back-heel to Messi but the Argentine's shot was weak and easily dealt with by McCarthy.

Before the interval, Messi had his best chance of the game, again set up by the outstanding Gomez, but one-on-one with McCarthy, Messi saw his lofted shot pushed away by the LAFC keeper.

<h2>- 'Nice test' -</h2>

LAFC paid the price for the wastefulness in front of goal in the 51st minute when Miami's former Barcelona trio combined in style.

Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets fed Messi who picked out the overlapping Alba and he burst into the box to score with a cool, left-footed finish.

Miami were in firm control and wrapped up the win in the 83rd minute when Messi burst from midfield and slipped the ball outside to Campana who made no mistake with a curling finish.

"You know what Leo is, what he can give on the pitch. He gets the best (out) of everyone," said a beaming Campana. "Right now, the goal is to achieve the playoffs and I hope we can do it to give happiness to the people of Miami," added the striker.

LA got a 90th-minute consolation via Ryan Hollingshead’s glancing header from a corner and while the third-placed team in the Western Conference should have little trouble making the playoffs, they had been given a lesson in finishing.

Miami were bottom of the East and winless in 11 games in MLS before Messi's arrival and after winning the Leagues Cup, the Florida club have won two and drawn one in regular season action.

"It was a nice test for us to see where we stood, what we were able to do on a difficult ground against a very good opponent, the winners last year and we earned a very important victory for what is coming," Messi told broadcasters Apple TV. &nbsp;"This group grows more every day, we have been saying it since the beginning of all this. We were lucky to get a tournament and get into a final and now the goal is to get into the playoffs and fight for the league," he added.

"I feel good physically. Thank God I can continue playing and help the team in whatever way I can and hopefully we continue in this dynamic," he added.

In Sunday's other game, last year's runners-up, the Philadelphia Union, beat the New York Red Bulls 4-1 to keep their playoff hopes on track.

The score was 1-1 when Red Bulls' Sean Nealis was sent off after handling the ball and picking up a second yellow card.

Philadelphia took full advantage of the extra man after the break with goals from Jamaican Damion Lowe, Argentina Julian Carranza and Hungarian Daniel Gazdag.

The Argentine World Cup winner had limited involvement after entering with former Barcelona team-mate Sergio Busquets but made his mark on his regular season debut with an 89th minute goal.

Messi has now scored 11 goals in nine appearances in all competitions since joining Inter Miami.

"He's unbelievable, every day it's something new, on and off the field," said Miami's 19-year-old defender Noah Allen.

"He's an amazing person to play with and I am so blessed to play with him."

Martino had indicated that several of his players were in need of a break after an intense run of eight games inside a month and stuck to his word with his team selection, to the disappointment of the capacity crowd at Red Bull Arena.

A makeshift Miami had taken the lead in the 37th minute when Noah Allen played in a cross from the left and Paraguayan Diego Gomez was given time to turn and then slot home a left-foot effort.

Miami keeper Drake Callender had to make a series of saves to keep his side in the lead but with Red Bull pressure mounting, Martino opted to bring on his star man and the momentum of the game inevitably shifted.

The win lifts Miami off the bottom of the Eastern Conference and reduces the gap to the last playoff sport to 11 points with 11 games remaining.

<h2>Cincy bounce back</h2>

Eastern Conference leaders Cincinnati bounced back from their US Open Cup last four loss to Miami on Wednesday with a &nbsp;3-0 victory over New York City.

Aaron Boupendza nodded the Ohio side ahead in the 6th minute and Junior Moreno doubled the lead in the 52nd minute with a side-foot finish at the end of a swift counter.

A 59th minute header from Nick Hagglund wrapped up the win for Cincinnati who remain 11 points clear of second-placed Philadelphia.

Philly enjoyed a 3-1 win at Wayne Rooney's D.C. United with all their goals coming in the first half through Mikael Uhre, Jack McGlynn and a penalty from Hungarian international Daniel Gazdag.

Major League Soccer: Messi scores after coming off bench as Inter Miami beat New York Red Bulls

Lionel Messi said on Thursday he has re-found happiness since joining Inter Miami, describing his move to Major League Soccer as the "opposite" of his transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi, who has scored nine goals in six appearances since joining Miami, joined the MLS club after two seasons in France with PSG.

Speaking to local media for the first time since arriving in Miami, a relaxed Messi talked positively of his life in South Florida and contrasted it with his time in the French capital, which drew to a close earlier this year with sections of PSG's fans booing him.

"As I said at the time, my departure to Paris was not something I wanted, it was not something I wanted to leave Barcelona and, so to speak, it was from one day to the next," he said.

"And, well, I also had to get used to a place that was totally different from where I had been living all my life, both in terms of the city and in a sporting sense, and, well, it was difficult, but the opposite of what is happening to me now here," he said.

There had been speculation that Messi might return to Barcelona or join the wave of players heading to the Saudi league but Messi said he was pleased with his decision.

"I can tell you that I am very happy with the decision we made, not only for the game, for how it is going, but for my family, for how we live day by day, for how we enjoy the city, for this new experience and the reception of the people that was extraordinary from the first day, not only in Miami," he said.

"I made two away trips with the team and the treatment of the people towards me was spectacular. So, I am grateful and happy for the moment I am living and above all to be able to continue enjoying what I liked all my life, to play and to be able to do it in this way with joy," he said, stressing his decision had made together with his family.

The seven-times Ballon d'Or winner has the chance to win his first trophy when Miami take on Nashville on Saturday in the final of the Leagues Cup.

It would also be his club's first triumph in just their third season of existence.

"It would be amazing, wouldn't it? Both for me and for all the people who are fans of the club, for the club itself," he said. "We want to be a point of reference and winning a title would help a lot in that. It is a very young club, it has been around for a very short time, and to win our first title would be great for all of us," he said.

Despite huge expectations and the hope that the Argentine World Cup winner will lead the sport to new heights in the United States, Messi said he was simply enjoying the game and his life.

"The truth is that I don't think about all those things, I simply came here to play, to continue enjoying football, which is what I have liked all my life and I chose this place for that reason, above all things," he said.

Messi said his family had settled in well, despite them not yet having found a permanent home in the area and he said that he enjoyed to be part of the Spanish-speaking community in South Florida.

"From the beginning, since my arrival, the welcome was impressive, it is a city with many Latinos, and that makes everything much easier too," he said.

"The Latinos are much closer, much more demonstrative, always showing affection, closeness, and I think that is the most important, the healthiest and the most beautiful thing in order to be able to settle in and enjoy what you do," he said.

"I already knew the city pretty well, how the people were. I already loved it....but to be living here every day and passing all of my time here has let me get a lot closer to the city and the people here.

Miami will travel north to face the Philadelphia Union for Tuesday's semi-final after they beat Mexican team Queretaro 2-1.

Watched by Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni, Messi had one of his quietest games in Miami's pink jersey but was still able to find the target for his legions of fans and help secure a fifth straight win since his arrival.

Miami took the lead in the 12th minute through a Josef Martinez penalty and doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute through in-form Robert Taylor, who clipped home a low cross from DeAndre Yedlin.

Charlotte, who had been largely content to frustrate Messi and Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets in the opening 45 minutes, showed more adventure after the break and substitute Patrick Agyemang should have pulled a goal back but his close-range header bounced over the bar.

Immediately following that let-off, Miami made sure of victory with Diego Gomez playing a low cross towards Messi in the middle only for Charlotte defender Adilson Malanda's attempted interception ended up in his own goal.

Malanda's ill-fated slide had denied the home crowd their expected Messi goal celebration, but that was to arrive three minutes from the end of time.

With the North Carolina side tiring, Ecuador striker Leonardo Campana had time, inside the box, to calmly look up and slip the ball across to Messi for the simplest of conversions.

After Sunday's helter-skelter game in Dallas ended 4-4, with Miami progressing after penalties, Martino was pleased to see his team keep control of the contest.

"We kept control of the ball for longer spells and I think there was only one clear chance from the opponent. Other than that, I think we didn't suffer defensively," said the former Barcelona and Argentina coach.

"It's very difficult for us not to score goals that's why we talk a lot about keeping a clean sheet because that's almost a guarantee of being able to win the game," he said.

Neymar, the world’s most expensive player, has two more years still left on his current deal, but could now see the exit doors. The club is already enduring a tough European summer with the exit of Lionel Messi while Kylian Mbappe’s transfer situation has put it in a big financial dilemma.

The club is officially yet to confirm anything on Neymar’s transfer situation, but according to Kaveh Solhekol of Sky Sports, PSG intend to sell the player after a few sources close to the player confirmed his desire to leave. Neymar has been a hot asset for Paris Saint-Germain since he arrived in 2017 and led the club to league title success in five seasons. He was also formidable for the club in 2020 when PSG managed to reach their maiden Champions League final before losing to Bayern Munich in the final.

According to the report, Neymar is yet to formally inform of his desire to leave the club but the club assumes the player could hand over a transfer request any time. If this is the case, PSG will not take any risk considering they are already on the verge of losing a big sum in the Mbappe transfer saga.

With two years still on the contract, the ball is in PSG’s court to decide the right price for the player. PSG value the player around $64 million to $100mn, depending on the buyer.

Manager Luis Enrique is also not in favour of working with Neymar, despite having won the Champions League with him in 2015 at Barcelona. The manager wants a new and hungrier squad capable of challenging for trophies on the domestic and European stage.

Barcelona, Neymar’s former employer, are currently divided on whether to bring him back to the club or not. Manager Xavi does not fancy the move but some club officials are in favour of bringing him back, having missed out on the transfer of Messi earlier in the summer. Saudi Pro League sides are reportedly interested in taking Neymar while Major League Soccer clubs are also aware of the interest in the player.

Football Transfers: PSG open to selling Neymar in chaotic summer development; SPL, MLS move on cards

Lionel Messi scored twice, including a brilliant late equaliser, as Inter Miami advanced past FC Dallas to the quarter-finals of the Leagues Cup on penalties after an enthralling 4-4 draw.

A trademark curling free-kick in the 85th minute, Messi's seventh goal in his fourth game for Miami, took the game to the shootout after Miami had trailed 4-2 with 10 minutes to go.

The Leagues Cup, the tournament for clubs from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga MX, does not feature extra-time with drawn games going directly to penalties.

Messi put Miami ahead in the sixth minute with a clinical side-foot finish from a Jordi Alba pull-back.&nbsp;It was initially ruled out for offside but the decision was reversed after the referee, on review, ruled that Josef Martinez had not blocked the view of the goalkeeper.

Dallas drew level in the 37th minute through Argentine Facundo Quignon, who connected with a fine pull-back from overlapping full-back Marco Farfan.

The home side grabbed the lead on the stroke of half-time with an outstanding finish from Bernard Kamungo who left two defenders behind before burying the chance.

Another of Dallas's Argentine players, Alan Velasco, made it 3-1 in the 63rd minute with a free-kick from the left which flew untouched through a crowded box and into the far corner.

Miami narrowed the deficit through teenage substitute Benjamin Cremaschi who slotted in a low ball from Alba, just a minute after coming off the bench.

An own goal from Robert Taylor, as he tried to intercept a Paul Arriola pass, restored the two-goal cushion for Dallas at 4-2.

Messi then chipped a free-kick into the box and Farfan, unchallenged, inexplicably headed into his own goal to keep Miami alive.

Five minutes from the end Messi strode up and curled a free-kick from 20 yards superbly into the top corner to take it to penalties.

Starting with how his decision to join the Major League Soccer (MLS) impacted the overall picture, Dan said, “The great player in the world decided he wanted to come and play with Inter Miami in the MLS. That's clearly a seminal moment for the league and soccer in North America.”

“We believe the magnitude of his decision cannot be overstated as it is a transformational moment, and we will see the difference in next three, five or ten years on how it changed the sport in the country,” Dan added.

When asked about if 2026 FIFA World Cup (to be co-hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico) had anything to do with Messi deciding to join the MLS instead of anywhere else despite lucrative offers, Dan said,&nbsp;“The World Cup in our country is going to serve as the rocket-fuel for the growth of soccer in three countries. That said, the World Cup was not the factor to sign Lionel Messi. We are hopeful that he continues to play for his national team, and we will see him here in 2026.”

<h2>Messi’s inclusion in MLS skyrockets growth of football in country</h2>

With several superstars in the past, including Pele, David Beckham, also plying their trades in the MLS, Messi’s inclusion contributes to league’s success. Dan said his addition accelerated the growth of football in the USA like never before.

“Pele led the foundation when he came to America in 1975. Fast forward 2007, David Beckham joined MLS - a relatively new league then, and then Messi comes this year. He's taken it to an entirely different level. He's accelerated the growth of our league and this sport in North America like nothing we have ever seen before,” he said.

Dan revealed how the social media numbers got influenced as well.&nbsp;

“Earlier, Inter Miami had a decent Instagram following (around 1 million) before Messi joined the club, and they are now at 13 million followers. We have seen the response on social media in his first couple of games. He's a global icon, and he's resonating,” MLS’ Executive VP added.

He added when Messi travels across USA (Since he played three home games so far), there are going to be packed stadiums everywhere.

“We knew that he was going to have an impact on the relevance of Inter Miami and Major League Soccer's popularity, and it translates to jersey sales. When he travels on the road, which he has not yet (since his first three games were at home), you will see packed stadiums in USA and Canada welcoming him to our league,” he added.

Lionel Messi made it five goals in three appearances for Inter Miami as he scored twice in a 3-1 win over Orlando City in the Leagues Cup round-of-32 on Wednesday.

Messi scored twice from close range to maintain his 100 percent winning record with Miami, who were winless in 11 league games before his arrival.

Messi will now head on the road with Miami for the first time with Sunday's match with FC Dallas in Texas offering a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament for top flight teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga MX.

Wednesday's Florida derby was not a game which will be featured in the Messi highlight videos but despite being frustrated by tight-marking for most of the game, the seven-time Ballon D'Or winner emerged the decisive figure once again.

A thunderstorm led to a 95-minute delay to the kick-off but when the game began, Miami picked up where they left off in their 4-0 win over Atlanta United last week - attacking with intent.

Robert Taylor, the Finnish winger, cut in from the left and chipped a perfect ball into the path of the on-running Messi who brought the ball down with his chest and volleyed home from six yards out.

But Orlando responded strongly and they drew level ten minutes later when a low shot from Ivan Angulo was pushed out by Miami keeper Drake Callender and Uruguayan Cesar Araujo pounced on the edge of the box to drive a low shot into the corner.

<h2>Frustration for Orlando</h2>

Orlando were increasingly effective in closing down Messi and the Argentine showed the first signs of frustration when he picked up a yellow card for a foul on Wilder Cartagena.

Orlando coach Oscar Pareja had clearly given his team instructions to sacrifice possession to Miami to ensure they had enough players to crowd out and neutralise Messi and Busquets, and the approach was working.

Openings were limited for Messi and when he did get some space near the goal in the 32nd minute, after good work from DeAndre Yedlin, he squeezed his left-foot shot wide.

The Argentine had an opportunity with a free-kick from within his range, just before the break but his effort from over 25 yards out was comfortably tipped over by keeper Pedro Gallese.

Messi looked unhappy as he left the field at the break, perhaps by the physical nature of some of the marking he had received as much as the lack of space he had found in the game.

But Miami found a way to restore their lead without the involvement of their star man -- 18-year-old Benjamin Cremaschi slipped a pass into the box to Martinez who feeling a slight tug from Antonio Carlos went down and won a penalty.

Orlando were unhappy with the decision but their protests were to no avail and Martinez, after a stutter and a shuffle, fired home.

Miami made sure of the win and progression to the last 16 when Taylor broke down the left and picked out Martinez at the back of the box who chested the ball and found Messi with a clever chip which the Argentine gleefully tucked away.

Another former Barcelona star Jordi Alba made his debut for Miami, coming on as a 64th minute substitute and although Araujo had an effort disallowed in stoppage time, there was little trouble in the latter stages for Messi's team.

Miami's right-back DeAndre Yedlin suggested that Orlando's approach had come from fear while Miami continued to play with belief.

"He just gives everyone around him confidence. You can give him balls in difficult situations and know he's going to make something out of it.&nbsp;

Orlando were unhappy with the decision but their protests were to no avail and Martinez, after a stutter and a shuffle, fired home. Miami made sure of the win and progression to the last 16 when Taylor broke down the left and picked out Martinez at the back of the box who chested the ball and found Messi with a clever chip which the Argentine gleefully tucked away. Another former Barcelona star Jordi Alba made his debut for Miami, coming on as a 64th minute substitute and although Araujo had an effort disallowed in stoppage time, there was little trouble in the latter stages for Messi's team. Lionel Messi made a Hollywood start to his American adventure, scoring a last-second winner with a curling free-kick in his debut game for Inter Miami on Friday. Deep in the fourth minute of stoppage time, with the Leagues Cup match against Mexican club Cruz Azul standing at 1-1, Messi won a free-kick just outside the box, in perfect range for his famous left foot.

The seven-times Ballon d'Or winner took a glance at the position of Cruz Azul goalkeeper Andres Gudino, then put his head down before curling his shot high to the keeper's right and into the top corner to deliver the 2-1 triumph. The capacity 20,000 crowd at Miami's DRV PNK Stadium went wild, with some fans running on to the field before being apprehended by security. Smoke bombs in Miami's trademark pink went off in the area behind the goal, occupied by the team's most passionate supporters.

If Messi's debut was any guide, the former Barcelona star still has plenty to offer.

Even before his wonderful goal he had looked sharp and alert, his touch belying the fact that until little over a week ago he was vacationing on a Caribbean beach with his family.

Sergio Busquets, the Spanish midfielder and former Barca team-mate, who has joined Messi for his American adventure, also made a strong impression after they both entered the contest in the 54th minute as part of a triple change with Venezuelan Josef Martinez.

Busquets showed his famous, almost telepathic understanding with Messi remains, after over two years apart from each other, with the midfielder delivering pieces from all angles into the Argentine's feet.

But it was Messi's magical finish that will remain long in the memories of Inter Miami fans.

He also made sure that the club's co-owner David Beckham had a broad grin at the final whistle.

"To be honest, as soon as I saw the free kick given I thought this is the way it’s meant to end. Especially when you’ve got players like Leo and Sergio on the pitch, that’s what they produce," said the former England midfielder.

"It's so exciting tonight for our fans. All of these people that come down here to see Leo just step onto the pitch, let alone just do what he’s done. It’s a dream come true for everyone in this stadium to see.

"It's such a moment for this country, such a moment for this league," he said.

Mahrez scored 78 goals and made 59 assists in 236 appearances in all competitions with City, and won 11 trophies at the club, including five league titles following his move from Leicester City in 2018.

The 32-year-old saw his role for Pep Guardiola's side reduced last season, scoring 15 goals in 47 games, but missing out on action in the FA Cup and Champions League finals as City won a historic treble.

Last year he, renewed his contract until 2025.

The Argentine arrived in South Florida last week to a wave of enthusiasm and was presented to fans at a special stadium event on Sunday. But since the initial hype, when club owner Jorge Mas described him as "America's number 10" and promised the move would "change the football landscape" in the USA, there has been a noticeable change of tone.

Messi only started training in earnest this week after spending time with his family on vacation and the opening game of the new Leagues Cup -- which pits MLS and Liga MX teams together in a tournament format -- may come too soon for the World Cup champion to start.

Co-owner David Beckham said on Tuesday that Messi will play "some part of the game" and coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino, Messi's compatriot and former Barcelona coach, had suggested he might start on the bench.

At the pre-match press conference, moved to the downtown performing arts centre in Fort Lauderdale due to the huge media interest, Martino said they would make a decision on how to use Messi after training on Friday.

"It is very difficult for people not to have expectations,” said Martino, "But it may take a while."

Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets, a former team-mate of Messi's from their glory days with Barcelona, certainly doesn't feel ready yet for a full game in what will also be his debut.

"I need time to adapt. It would be practically impossible for me to play 90 minutes tomorrow," he said.

The fact that fans have paid around $250 for tickets for what has long been billed as Messi's debut, means that he almost certainly will enter the field at some stage however.

Cruz Azul's experienced coach, the Brazilian born Ricardo Ferretti, laughed when asked whether his team expected to face Messi.

"If he didn't play... it would be better. But, they also have to think about something, why are there so many people here? Because of him, right?" said the 69-year-old.

But Ferretti, known as "Tuca" throughout his career as a coach in Mexico, was a little irked that the game between the two teams was being viewed purely as the debut of one player.

"We will not face a single player. He does not win or lose alone. Soccer is a team sport. There are players who stand out and deserve emphasis, I agree with that," he added.

"There are two institutions here - Cruz Azul is a historic team, one of the greats of Mexican football and Inter Miami is an important team in MLS," he added.

The Inter Miami players who haven't been making the headlines in recent days, have had a strange week with over 200 media turning out to film their training session on Tuesday.

<h2>A great team-mate&nbsp;</h2>

But DeAndre Yedlin, the USA international who played in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, said Messi has quickly fit into the dressing room.

"He's a great team-mate. For the (presentation) event he had on Sunday, (striker Leonardo) Campana was looking for tickets and so he put it in the group chat, I didn't even know that Messi was in the group chat yet but he popped up straight away and said 'how many do you need Leo?'

"Straight of the bat like that, they've known each other for like two or three days but just to show that generosity is a great first example of how he is," he said.

Martino said that Messi looks happy in training and has noticed that he seems more relaxed having finally won a World Cup with his country.

"Leo is without a huge backpack that he had, and he took it off seven months ago. I think we are in a great moment," the coach said.

Busquets, who has been joined by another former Barca team-mate in defender Jordi Alba, who signed for the club on Thursday, said it was great to be reunited with Messi.

"I'm very happy to enjoy Leo as a teammate again, we parted ways, but time gives us the opportunity to get back together, he is a great person.

"We are looking forward to playing with the best player in the history of football, I am very happy for everything, hopefully we can take what we did now to Inter Miami."

"One is to see if we can make the playoffs. Right now, that seems like a stretch, but as long as we have the possibility we can’t stop trying," he said. &nbsp;"We are in a good place in the US Open Cup, and now there’s a new tournament, Leagues Cup, that we will aim for. After that, the goal is to build for 2024," added the coach known as 'Tata'.

Sporting Director Chris Henderson said the club would be making more changes to their squad in the coming weeks.&nbsp;

The football world was eagerly awaiting Messi's decision after PSG confirmed this week the playmaker, widely considered the best player in the history of football, was departing.

The romance of a Barcelona return and the prospect of eye-watering riches in Saudi Arabia fell by the wayside as Messi opted to join MLS, with Miami a city he has holidayed in on previous occasions.

"If it had been a question of money, I would have gone to Saudi Arabia or elsewhere," said Messi. "It seemed a lot of money and the truth is that my decision went another way and not for money."

Inter Miami, co-owned by former England international David Beckham and founded in 2018, sacked coach Phil Neville last week with the team at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Some reports say key MLS sponsors including Adidas and Apple TV, who own the league's domestic broadcasting rights, may be contributing to his deal. 
 
Messi, who turns 36 later this month, is now set to finish his club career outside the spotlight of top-level European football.

Major League Soccer returned from its four-month shutdown on Wednesday with a sombre anti-racism demonstration and fresh fears another coronavirus-stricken team may be forced to withdraw.

An injury-time winner from Portugal international and former Manchester United star Nani gave Orlando a 2-1 victory over David Beckham's Inter Miami played out in a makeshift, fan-less arena at ESPN's World Wide of Sports complex at Disney World in Florida.

Nani's 97th minute strike completed a come-from-behind win for Orlando, who had equalized through Chris Mueller on 70 minutes after Juan Agudelo fired Inter Miami into the lead just after halftime.

However the injury-time drama in Orlando was largely overshadowed by events off the pitch as the restart tournament billed as "MLS is Back" got under way.

Just before kick off, dozens of players from clubs across MLS had lined up around the field for a silent protest against racism and police brutality.

"The performance of everyone was beautiful. It was emotional for the ones who were there," said Orlando's Nani.

Players clad in black t-shirts and wearing black gloves raised their fists to the night sky in an eight-minute 46-second salute -- a reference to the May 25 death of unarmed black George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.

Floyd died after being pinned to the floor by a police officer who knelt on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds.

Miami and Orlando players then dropped to one knee just after the opening whistle, the gesture of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter cause that has rippled across the globe in the tide of revulsion which followed Floyd's death.

Major League Commissioner Don Garber did not directly confirm the new Nashville cases in comments to ESPN, but warned the league would not hesitate to remove the team from the tournament if necessary.

Garber said the rash of positive cases showed that the league's aggressive testing policies had been effective.

"We don't want anyone to be sick, whether they have symptoms or whether they have COVID-19," Garber told ESPN.

"The whole concept was to catch infections as they were coming into Orlando. That's what's happening with Dallas and Nashville. We are working very closely with our doctors and will meet with them.

"If we find that we have a situation with Nashville where they can't continue in the tournament we will make that decision and move forward from there."

MLS restarts with sombre ceremony, new virus fears

Major League Soccer on Thursday extended its moratorium on team or group training through June 1 as coronavirus concerns continue to disrupt global sport.

MLS suspended play on March 12 in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week the league allowed individual players to return to outdoor team facilities to train where local government restrictions allowed.

Social distancing measures were in place, but at least nine teams have yet to receive permission from local authorities to welcome players back.

"MLS and its clubs will continue to remain in close contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and local health authorities on this continually evolving situation and provide further updates as they become available," MLS said in a statement.

The update came amid reports that MLS was considering a resumption of competition with all 26 clubs taking part in a stand-alone tournament to be played inside a secure "bubble" in Orlando, Florida.

City Football Group, which owns seven clubs including Major League Soccer's New York City FC, Spanish side Girona, Japan's Yokohama F Marinos and A-League side Melbourne City, hope to complete a deal for a club in India by the end of the year.

"We have some interest in some markets and countries where there is a genuine football passion and opportunities, like China, but also India," Soriano was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"There might be other opportunities in Asia. We've been looking at India for nearly two years now. I'd say this year we'll end up doing an investment in India."

City Football Group recently bought a stake in Chinese third-tier side Sichuan Jiuniu FC and Soriano said they were looking to add at least two or three more clubs to their stable.

"I cannot see 10 years ahead but the group might have two or three teams more," Soriano added. "Is this going to change in five years and we're going to have more? Maybe, I don't know that.

"But to complete the vision that we had six years ago, I think we will have maybe two or three clubs more."
