Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshiyari on Monday invited the third-largest party Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to stake claim to form government after Shiv Sena failed to submit letter of support.

Earlier, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari met a delegation of Shiv Sena which expressed willingness to form a government in the state but he declined the party's request for a three-day extension for submitting 'requisite' letters of support from other political parties.

In a press conference Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray&nbsp;had said that his party's willingness to form the government in Maharashtra was conveyed to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

"We told the Governor that we are willing to form the government. We asked for at least two days but we were not given the time," Thackeray told media persons after meeting the Governor.

The majority mark in Maharashtra is 145.

According to sources, Shiv Sena's Udhav Thackeray will stake a claim as the chief minister while Ajit Pawar of the NCP will be the deputy chief minister of the state.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena's MP Arvind Sawant has announced his resignation as a minister in prime minister Narendra Modi's government.

Ahead of the NCP meet, party supremo Sharad Pawar said that any decision regarding government formation will only be made after discussion with ally congress.

Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) chief HD Deve Gowda on Monday said that if the Congress party gives support to Shiv Sena then they should continue that for five years, only then people will trust them.&nbsp;

"If Congress gives support to Shiv Sena, they should not disturb it for the next five years, only then people will trust the Congress party," Gowda told ANI when he was asked about the political situation in Maharashtra.

"Bal Thackeray gave place to the BJP in Maharashtra, LK Advani and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee went to Balasaheb`s residence and requested him for seats in the state. Today the BJP overrode that and that is why Uddhav Thackeray has taken a stand that he will teach them a lesson. Now, it`s for Congress and NCP to put the BJP down," he said.
