Their findings, which have been published in Nature Neuroscience, revealed that individuals with long COVID who exhibited blood-brain barrier leaks experienced brain fog. On the other hand, those without the said disruptions did not.

Professor Matthew Campbell, a geneticist and head of genetics at Trinity, who contributed to the study said that "for the first time...we have been able to show that leaky blood vessels in the human brain, in tandem with a hyperactive immune system, may be the key drivers of brain fog associated with long COVID."

"This is critically important, as understanding the underlying cause of these conditions will allow us to develop targeted therapies for patients in the future," he added, as quoted by Sky News.

In their report, the researchers highlighted that "disruption" is apparent during "acute infection and in patients with long COVID with cognitive impairment." Still, they noted that it remains unclear how function is affected in these conditions.

Previously, a study from University College London noted that blood vessel leakage into surrounding tissues is common in numerous inflammatory diseases.

Professor Colin Doherty, a neurology expert and head of the school of medicine at Trinity, who was not part of the study, suggests that the study results will "now likely change the landscape of how we understand and treat post-viral neurological conditions".

"It also confirms that the neurological symptoms of long COVID are measurable with real and demonstrable metabolic and vascular changes in the brain," he added.

Almost half of the people known to have contracted COVID-19 in Africa are now living with the effects of long Covid, according to a recent analysis published in Scientific Reports. The research conducted by a team of scientists from Italy found that the incidence rates in African nations are the highest among any of the other low-income countries.&nbsp;

<h2>About the study</h2>

Long Covid has been defined as a condition where symptoms of being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus persist for three months or more. The research was conducted by a team of scientists from the University of Bari, Italy, and analysed the data of 29,213 people.&nbsp;

According to the study, researchers found that globally, at least 10 per cent of people infected with COVID-19 have this condition.&nbsp;

Following the comprehensive review of previous studies and analysis scientists also found that the estimates of incidence among low-income countries long Covid varies greatly. This has been attributed to hidden infections and the difficulty of accessing tests.

For example, among African nations, estimates range from two per cent in Ghana to a staggering 86 per cent in Egypt. The review also found that older people are more likely to experience long Covid, but did not find any significant difference between men and women at risk for the condition.&nbsp;

Cognitive impairment, according to the study, was the most common neurologic symptom of long Covid, while shortness of breath was the most common respiratory symptom. A quarter of those suffering from long Covid have reported post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The researchers noted how this particular finding was “concerning” since it adds an additional burden in mental health disorder brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and its chronic consequences have been put on a health system which is largely unprepared to deal with mental health conditions.&nbsp;

The team also found that a quarter of people with long Covid had a poor quality of life as a result, with fatigue and loss of appetite.&nbsp;

He gave an example of one type of chromatin architecture termed A/B compartments that “can be analogous to the yin and yang portions of our chromatin.” However, after a person was infected with the SARS-CoV-2 they found that the yin and yang portions of the chromatin lose their “normal shapes and start to mix together,” said Li. Furthermore, not only can the shape but also the chemical composition of chromatin be altered by SARS-CoV-2, the study found.&nbsp;

According to a scientist who was a part of the study, Xiaoyi Yuan, the changes in “chemical modifications of chromatin were known to exert long-term effects on gene expression and phenotypes”, reported PTI. Therefore, their research might provide an “unrealised new perspective to understand the viral impacts on host chromatin that can associate with long Covid,” Yuan added.&nbsp;

The mixing of chromatin might be the cause of some key genes like interleukin-6 to change, the study suggests. The interleukin-6 is a significant inflammation gene and this mixing and change can cause a cytokine storm in severe COVID-19 patients. A cytokine storm is a severe immune reaction where the body releases too many cytokines very quickly. While they play an important role in normal immune responses, a large amount released in the body at once can be harmful.&nbsp;

Dr Ashok Seth, Chairman of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, told ANI that there is a significant amount of data from the west that shows that heart attacks and strokes increased by 60 per cent over the course of a year in hundreds of thousands of patients studied.

"So we are very clear COVID, even though mild, may affect people for a longer duration up to a year and create increased incidents of heart attacks and strokes."

"We also now know that there is a definitive entity called long Covid which means there are features which are coming up, persisting after Covid infection in three months. There is extensive research which is going on, all over the world," she said talking to ANI.

As per Dr Srivastava when it comes to Covid, there are several factors at play, including infection, inflammation, involvement of the brain, nervous system, muscles, and peripheral central nervous system.

The risk of developing neurological and mental health conditions such as psychosis, dementia, brain fog, and seizures remains high till after two years of the infection, in comparison to other respiratory infections, the report by the University of Oxford and the National Institute for Health and Care Research Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre, published Wednesday in the Lancet Psychiatry said.

However, while anxiety and depression more commonly occur soon after a COVID-19 diagnosis, they are likely to fade off after the first two months, similar to what happens after infections such as the flu.

Looking at the data on children, the study says that they weren't as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety or depression till two years and the risk of brain fog also goes away. But the risk of them suffering seizures and psychotic disorders is much higher than children recovering from other respiratory infections.

Looking at how the different variants affected health risks, the chances of neuropsychiatric diagnoses rose, from 10% higher for anxiety to 38% for brain fog, if one was infected with the Delta variant as compared to the alpha version. Similar results were found for the Omicron variant, even though it is relatively milder.

Dr Max Taquet, who led the analyses at the University of Oxford, said, “The findings shed new light on the longer-term mental and brain health consequences for people following COVID-19 infection. The results have implications for patients and health services and highlight the need for more research to understand why this happens after COVID-19, and what can be done to prevent these disorders from occurring, or treat them when they do.”

As per the study, adults under 65 with a history of Covid infection up to two years previously had a higher risk of cognitive deficit, better known as brain fog (640 vs. 550 cases per 10,000 people), and muscle disease (44 vs. 32 cases per 10,000 people). Adults 65 and over who had Covid over the same time span had more diagnoses of brain fog (1,540 vs. 1,230 per 10,000 people), dementia (450 vs. 330 per 10,000 people), and psychotic disorder (85 vs. 60 per 10,000 people). Children who had Covid were more likely to have seizures (260 vs. 130 cases per 10,000 children) and psychotic disorders (18 vs. 6 per 10,000 children).

As far as the limitations of the study are concerned, the researchers cautioned that the study may underrepresent self-diagnosed and asymptomatic cases since they are normally not recorded. It also did not look at the severity or length of conditions after COVID-19.

Looking at how the different variants affected health risks, the chances of neuropsychiatric diagnoses rose, from 10% higher for anxiety to 38% for brain fog, if one was infected with the Delta variant as compared to the alpha version. Similar results were found for the Omicron variant, even though it is relatively milder. Dr Max Taquet, who led the analyses at the University of Oxford, said, “The findings shed new light on the longer-term mental and brain health consequences for people following COVID-19 infection. India's capital reports spike in virus cases As per the study, adults under 65 with a history of Covid infection up to two years previously had a higher risk of cognitive deficit, better known as brain fog (640 vs. 550 cases per 10,000 people), and muscle disease (44 vs. 32 cases per 10,000 people). Adults 65 and over who had Covid over the same time span had more diagnoses of brain fog (1,540 vs. 1,230 per 10,000 people), dementia (450 vs. 330 per 10,000 people), and psychotic disorder (85 vs. 60 per 10,000 people). Children who had Covid were more likely to have seizures (260 vs. 130 cases per 10,000 children) and psychotic disorders (18 vs. 6 per 10,000 children). As far as the limitations of the study are concerned, the researchers cautioned that the study may underrepresent self-diagnosed and asymptomatic cases since they are normally not recorded. The study, based on long Covid and all the symptoms associated with it, will be presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID 2022) in Lisbon next month. As per the study, estimates have suggested that over half of survivors of SARS-CoV-2 infection experience post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), more commonly known as 'long COVID'. Italian researchers did an observational study of 428 patients (254 (59%) men and 174 (41%) women) treated at the Careggi University Hospital's post-COVID outpatient service between June 2020 and June 2021. It was time when the original form of SARS-CoV-2 and the Alpha variant were circulating in the population. The researchers have suggested that individuals who were infected with the alpha variant of the virus displayed, an early release from the ECCMID regarding the study. As per the research, individuals who were infected with the alpha variant of the virus displayed different emotional and neurological symptoms. The study revealed that at least three-quarters 325/428 (76%) of patients reported at least one persistent symptom. The most common reported symptoms were shortness of breath and chronic fatigue followed by sleep problems, visual problems and brain fog. The study performed a more detailed evaluation and compared the symptoms reported by patients infected between March and December 2020 (when the original SARS-COV-2 was dominant) with those reported by patients infected between January and April 2021 (when Alpha was the dominant variant). The researchers found a substantial change in the pattern of neurological and cognitive/emotional problems. The study has been led by Dr Michele Spinicci and colleagues from the University of Florence and Careggi University Hospital in Italy. Dr Spinicci said, "Many of the symptoms reported in this study have been measured, but this is the first time they have been linked to different COVID-19 variants." "The long duration and broad range of symptoms reminds us that the problem is not going away, and we need to do more to support and protect these patients in the long term. Future research should focus on the potential impacts of variants of concern and vaccination status on ongoing symptoms," Dr Spinicci added.
