A new study says artificial intelligence can often work out where a photo was taken just by looking at the image. A study by Mcafee found that AI models correctly identified the city and country in 87 to 91 percent of more than 21,000 travel photos. AI did not need GPS information, location tags, captions, file names or hidden metadata; it looked for clues such as major buildings, road markings, shop signs, skylines and even food stalls.

AI could turn social media into a location-tracking tool

Thieves have made off with 400 legs of Iberian acorn-fed ham, valued at around €200,000, from a gourmet supplier—just in time for Christmas. The stolen ham, a prized cultural delicacy with a 'Protected Designation of Origin Jabugo' seal, was taken in the early hours of November 13 from Jamones Eíriz, a family-owned business located in the mountain village of Corteconcepción, southern Andalusia.

The oldest map of the world - which has been drawn on an almost 3,000-year-old clay tablet - has been deciphered by scientists who have found the location of 'Noah's Ark'.

The Babylonian artefact - called the Imago Mundi - had a circular diagram in which there was a writing system which used wedge-shaped symbols to describe the world's early creation.

The British Museum's researchers said that they deciphered the tablet last month, however, after a deeper analysis it was found that the ancient language had Biblical references.

At the back of the tablet is the description of what a traveller will see on their journey and one part of it says that they should go through "seven leagues... [to] see something that is thick as a parsiktu-vessel."

The word "parsiktu" has also been mentioned on other ancient Babylonian tablets for explaining the size of a boat which is required to survive the Great Flood.

The researchers looked into the instructions which mentioned a path to 'Urartu' where it was claimed in an ancient Mesopotamian poem that a man and his family had landed an ark to preserve life.

Here's what the Babylonian tablet depicts

"It shows that the story was the same, and of course, that one led to the other but also, that from the Babylonian point of view, this was a matter-of-fact thing. That if you did go on this journey you would see the remnants of this historic boat," said Dr. Irving Finkel, British Museum curator.

Mesopotamia is sitting at the bottom centre of the map and is enclosed by a circle which represents a "bitter river" which is believed to surround the entire world.

The tablet has been damaged but at one time it featured eight triangles which, as per the researchers, signified mountains which matched the descriptions on the back.

"Number four says 'To the fourth, to which you must travel seven leagues,'' said Dr Finkel, in a YouTube video.

He said that the passage shows how the traveller will eventually reach the giant vessel.

"This parsiktu measurement, is something to an Assyriologist which makes their ears prick and the fact is it's only once otherwise known from cuneiform tablets and it's rather an interesting cuneiform tablet too," Dr Finkel added.

"Because it is the description of the Ark which was built, theoretically, by the Babylonian version of Noah," he said.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been abruptly transferred from the prison where he is serving an 11.5 year sentence to an undisclosed location, nearly two years since he was poisoned with what the West said was a nerve agent.

Navalny, by far Russia's most prominent opposition leader, casts President Vladimir Putin's Russia as a dystopian state run by thieves and criminals where wrong is cast as right and judges are in fact representatives of a doomed elite.

Navalny's top aide informed about the transfer on the Telegram app on Tuesday.

Just last month, Navalny lambasted Putin via video link in a Russian court, casting the Kremlin chief as a madman who started a "stupid war" that was butchering the innocent people of both Ukraine and Russia.

When his lawyer arrived at Correctional Colony No. 2, a prison camp in Pokrov, 119 kilometres (74 miles) east of Moscow, he was told: "There is no such convict here," according to Navalny's chief of staff Leonid Volkov.

"Where Alexei is now, and which colony he is being taken to, we don't know," Volkov said in a statement on Telegram.

Navalny's spokeswoman said there was speculation that he was being taken to the high-security penal colony IK-6 Melekhovo near Vladimir, about 250 km (155 miles) east of Moscow.

Russia's prison service could not be reached for immediate comment.

"The problem with his transfer to another colony is not only that the high-security colony is much scarier: it is more that we don't know where Alexei is," his spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said.

"He is one-to-one with the system that has already tried to kill him."

He earned admiration from the disparate Russian opposition for voluntarily returning to Russia in 2021 from Germany where he underwent treatment for what Western laboratory tests showed was an attempt to poison him with a nerve agent in Siberia.

On his return he was jailed for parole violations. Russia denies Navalny's claims that Russia's secret police poisoned him with Novichok.

On March 24, Navalny was sentenced to a further nine years in prison for fraud and contempt of court. The opposition leader says the charges against him are fabricated and aimed at thwarting his political ambitions.

The judge ordered that Navalny be transferred to a maximum-security prison, where his rights to visits and correspondence will be reduced.

Navalny's political network has been largely dismantled since his jailing, having been banned as an "extremist" organisation. Senior aides and organisers have either been jailed or forced into exile.

Navalny said two weeks ago that he had been charged in a new criminal case with creating an extremist organisation and inciting hatred towards the authorities, offences that carry a maximum jail term of 15 more years.

The fun time of the year is finally here. As winter begins, festive vibes already start to kick in. Although this year the holiday season is once again affected by the deadly coronavirus, it seems like Santa Claus is immune to the virus. While most people are staying at home and practising social distancing, Santa is coming to you with gifts. LIVE: NORAD tracks Santa Claus' travels around the globe https://t.co/H18HGaVvcX — Reuters (@Reuters) December 24, 2021 × Here is how you can track his location: Santa's journey can be tracked using North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and Google. Santa is expected to travel an estimated 510,000,000 kilometres in just one night to deliver Christmas gifts to all children all around the globe. Given below are two websites where Santa can now be tracked: www.noradsanta.org santatracker.google.com While NORAD started tracking Santa in 1995, Google has been tracking Santa's journey since 2004. Both the websites started providing information about Santa's location from 2:30 pm IST on Christmas eve. Also read | Merry Christmas 2021: Wishes, Images, Quotes, Facebook & WhatsApp status to share with your friends & family Google Santa tracker also includes several games, including Santa selfie, Elf maker, Ollie under the sea, Elf ski, Gumball tilt, Present bounce, Snowball storm, Penguin dash and more. One can now also track Saint Nicolas' location using the NORAD Tracks Santa app. NORAD started tracking Santa after a newspaper misprinted the contact number of Santa for children. As a result, a child called the number and he was connected to US Air Force Colonel Harry Shoup at the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center (NORAD's predecessor). After this, an officer was assigned specially for taking children's calls.
