The silver lining of the survey is that&nbsp;44 per cent of the respondents still have hope about their futures.

“Using data from individuals at birth, aged seven, 15-17, and 27, we showed a molecular signature of prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE) in exposed individuals. We identified a significant number of molecular changes in genes involved in neurodevelopment and neurodevelopmental disease, across the life course," said Dr Osborne.

"This is a key finding because it suggests there is a molecular link between prenatal cannabis exposure and impacts on the genes involved in neurodevelopment.” she said in a release from the university.

This discovery, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, seeks to create awareness about risks of cannabis use at a time when many countries are relaxing norms around the drug, making it more freely available for women.

Every parent has at some occasion encountered a child refusing to eat certain foods. As annoying as it may be, fussy eating is possibly associated mostly with genetics, according to a large study in the UK that examined food habits of thousands of children over a period of time.

Food Fussiness or FF is "the tendency to eat a small range of foods, due to pickiness and/or reluctance to try new foods," and peaks at around seven years of age, according to the study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.

The study participants were identical and non-identical twins whose food habits were tracked over 13 years. This is the first twin study of genetic and environmental contributions to the developmental trajectory of FF from toddlerhood to early adolescence, and stability and change over time, said the study whose lead authors are Zeynep Nas and Moritz Herle. 
 
The study found genetics, or specifically DNA, to be the top factor behind food fussiness.&nbsp;

"Genetic variation in the population explained 60 per cent of the differences in pickiness at 16 months, rising to 74 per cent and more from three to 13 years old," it said.

Individual differences in fussy eating, it said, were largely explained by genetic factors at all ages.&nbsp;

"Fussy eating also shows a significant proportion of environmental influence, especially in toddlerhood, and may, therefore, benefit from early interventions throughout childhood," it added.

The scientists found that fussy eating habits were more similar among identical twins than non-identical twins.

But fussy eating can be fixed, even though it has genetic underpinnings, according to Dr Alison Fildes, a co-author of the study.

“Parents can continue to support their children to eat a wide variety of foods throughout childhood and into adolescence, but peers and friends might become a more important influence on children’s diets as they reach their teens.”

A New York woman filed a complaint against the Miss America and Miss World beauty pageants Monday, accusing them of discriminating against her for being a mother.

Danielle Hazel, 25, filed with the New York City Human Rights Commission after she was disqualified from the pageants for having a six-year-old son.

"My dream of competing in those pageants is still on hold today because of their discriminatory entry requirements, which ban mothers from competing," Hazel said.

For her legal representation, Hazel has tapped Gloria Allred, a lawyer from California known for taking on cases involving women's rights.

"Being pregnant or being a parent is not a crime, and should not exclude an individual from employment or business opportunities," Allred told reporters at a press conference.

Allred said the pageants' eligibility rules -- which stipulate that a contestant must be unmarried, childless, not pregnant and without a legally dependent person -- are "based upon the antiquated stereotype that women cannot be both a mother and be beautiful, poised, passionate, talented and philanthropic."

Allred added that she has already sued another beauty pageant, Miss Universe, for similar reasons.&nbsp; 
US beauty pageants have been rife with controversy for the past several years.

In May, the 2023 winners of Miss USA and Miss Teen USA relinquished their titles, citing mental health reasons, after an administrator of the pageant's parent organization resigned, citing a toxic work environment.

Founded in 1921, Miss America is the oldest beauty pageant in the United States. Miss USA, founded in 1952, was owned by Donald Trump until 2015, the year he launched his first run for the White House.

Last year, around 30 K-pop stars were appointed as the new faces for labels including Versace and Dior, while in the last two months, Lisa of BLACKPINK, BTS' Jin, and Karina from Aespa were announced as brand ambassadors for Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada respectively.

"(K-pop idols have) built their own following. They've built their own community ... and so for when brands are working with them, they're not only getting the press coverage of working with those K-pop stars but they're getting that huge community of followers," said Alison Bringe, chief market officer at data and technology company Launchmetrics.

"And because of these different voices that are supporting the K-pop stars, it is driving a phenomenal amount of media impact value that is considerably higher than Western celebrities."

In a report on June's Spring-Summer 2025 Menswear Paris Fashion Week, Launchmetrics said South Korea ranked as the third top region driving buzz, most of which was generated by South Korean celebrities.

Last month, it was revealed that Chiles had been stripped of the medal after a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) judge ruled that her score should be changed to more accurately reflect the difficulty level of her routine. "We're big on leather, and we're big on, like, warm colour palettes," said brand co-founder and designer Tracey Mills. "So every colour that you see is like the warm version of a colour palette because when you use warm colours, they can all mix and blend together seamlessly."

Aaron Potts continued his regular appearance at the show with a collection whose colours were inspired by the beaches in Zanzibar.

"I was looking at the sand and the water and the sky and all the gorgeous natural colours - so that really was the inspiration for the colour palette," he said. "And then we have these other fabrics that are these iridescent organzas, and we put those in as this sort of nod to all the beautiful iridescent fish."

Designer Clara Son said she likes to turn her negative emotions into beautiful garments.

"This collection is all about my dreams when I was going through a really challenging time," she said. "And in my dream, I'm riding a bike, right by the ocean and there was a stone, like the rocks, and there was like reeds and all the colour palettes coming from that."

Other brands who showed at the event included The Salting, who debuted a nautical-themed line.

New York Fashion Week will run from Sept. 6 to Sept. 11, with roughly 60 designers on the official calendar.

Veteran designer Ralph Lauren chose the upscale Hamptons seaside resort for his Spring 2025 fashion show on Thursday, inviting fashionistas, celebrities and U.S. First Lady Jill Biden to his "home away from home".

The designer, 84, presented his Ralph Lauren Collection, Purple Label and Polo Ralph Lauren lines for men, women and children at the show held in Bridgehampton on the eve of New York Fashion Week.

Actors Naomi Watts, Justin Theroux, Colman Domingo, Tom Hiddleston and Jude Law as well as singer Usher were among the famous faces seated in the front row and models Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington took to the runway.

1. How did you curate the cocktail program at Carnival by Trèsind?

When you think of the word "Carnival," what comes to mind? For us, it’s fun, vibrant attire, dance, and music. These elements inspired us to create a cocktail menu that celebrates true stories and carnivals from around the world. Not only are the cocktails fun and inventive, but our masked bartenders—whom we call liquid chefs—also entertain guests with their colourful attire, echoing the vibrant elements of the Carnival logo.

2. Tell us more about the live Gin and Tonic experience at Carnival, particularly the high degree of personalisation in the drinks.

The idea came from observing how people enjoy being their own bartender, mixing drinks that suit their palate and taste. Our Gin &amp; Tonic experience allows guests to do just that, right at their table. They can choose from a selection of fresh fruits, herbs, tonic, and their preferred gin. We’ve even gone a step further by creating in-house flavoured tonics, like Yuzu, Rhubarb, and Coffee, all sugar-free—addressing one of the biggest concerns in cocktails today.

My time at these renowned bars provided me with deep insights into the beverage world. The international market has access to a wide array of enzymes and liqueurs that are rare in India, giving them a first-mover advantage to cater to a diverse audience and create exceptional cocktails. This inspired us to craft our in-house liqueurs using local, fresh produce with little to no sugar.

5. What are three lesser-known trends in cocktails that insiders know?

One lesser-known trend that is slowly gaining popularity is minimalist drinks or High-Low Highballs. For example, Absinthe with Root Beer or Mezcal with Fanta—my personal favourite. Another trend is incorporating food into drinks; for instance, a Tiramisu Espresso Martini or "Not a Martini," which is a pizza-based drink using tequila fat-washed with cheese, clarified passata, and basil cordial. Lastly, using foam and air in cocktails, like our Java Jamboree, which features coconut and miso foam.

6. Are in-house drinks the future of cocktails?

Absolutely. In-house drinks offer the opportunity to personalise cocktails based on flavours, seasonal ingredients, and fermentation. While many believe Feni is the only local spirit available, India has a vast variety, such as Mahua, Dukshiri, and Toddy, that we can experiment with—these will play a significant role in the future of cocktails.

7. Many people avoid cocktails due to their high sugar content. How do you cater to those reducing sugar in their diets?

Sugar has increasingly become a concern, often referred to as a "poison" because, while it provides a dopamine rush, it also raises the risk of diabetes. Our in-house liqueurs address this issue with little to no sugar content, and some are made with raw jaggery, making them lower in calories.

Can cannabis reduce the ageing of brain? As per new research done on mice, long-term, low-dose use of the active ingredient of cannabis has an anti-ageing effect.

The study done by Bonn University in Germany has found that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main therapeutic ingredient in cannabis, restores cognitive abilities and synapse density in old mice.&nbsp;

"We have now been able to show that treatment with THC has a tissue-dependent and dual effect on mTOR signaling and the metabolome," said Dr Andras Bilkei-Gorzo a researcher who conducted the study along with an international team of scientists.

<h2>How the study was done</h2>

Two groups of mice were used in the study,&nbsp;young ones around four months old, and older ones aged around 18 months.&nbsp;

The 56th edition of the carnival was expected to draw a million people to the streets of west London to celebrate the city's diversity and its Caribbean community.

The carnival traces its roots to the hundreds of thousands of migrants from the Caribbean, known as the "Windrush" generation, who came to Britain between 1948 and 1971 to help rebuild the country following World War Two.

Their arrival was accompanied by racial tensions and the unfair treatment of Black people, with riots breaking out in 1958, including in the London district of Notting Hill, where many Caribbean migrants lived at the time.

"These events, and the divisive rhetoric which fuelled them, feel painfully relevant today."

Over the years, the indoor event organised by Jones has developed into the vibrant celebration it is today of multiculturalism and of how generations of migrants and their descendents have contributed to British society.

"It is important for us to celebrate our culture and where we have come from and for everyone to be together," said 41-year-old Ramzan Bacchus, who was wearing a Guyana bandana.

It does not matter where you come from (...) everyone is here to celebrate, together, as one people," he added.

London police deployed around 7,000 officers at the event, which it said was seen by a minority of people as a chance to commit crime.

It said three people were stabbed on Sunday - a 32-year-old woman, who was in a critical condition in hospital, and two men, aged 29 and 24. A total of 103 people were arrested and 18 officers were assaulted on Sunday, police said.

Monday's celebrations featured trucks draped in colourful materials, carrying bands and sound systems playing soca and reggae songs, surrounded by people in bright festival costumes.

Many brought flags of Caribbean nations. Jama Elmi, 50, a Londoner originally from Somalia, said the recent riots had not changed anything.

How did you begin to work with soil?&nbsp;

“Soil is an experiment for me currently because where I hail from, a small village in Uttarakhand, there has been a lot of connection to soil. I have played with it, and when I headed to a city, that was missing.”&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
“When I was in fifth grade, we shifted to a city, so there was always regret that we came out of the village. When I came into art, I used to landscape. But when I got deeper into art, we tended to be minimalistic about it all. I thought that my art practice was very stuck in Delhi due to buildings and cemented structures; I always wanted to go back home.” 
&nbsp; 
This drove me to find a new material, and that is soil.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
How can soil become a medium for art?&nbsp;

“There is no specific term called'soil art,’ but it is my personal choice to work with soil. My mother used to use soil for household chores, and I used to observe. Maybe this got ingrained in me.” 
&nbsp; 
“The process I follow is that I take soil, keep it in water, add cow dung and other substances to it, and then directly use it on canvas. I then layer the soil and repeat the process for a while. Layer by layer, your art starts developing. I used acrylic in it. When you mix colour and soil, it is called'mix-media.’ In the future, it can be that I work solely with soil without any added colour.”&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
Are there any renowned artists who have used soil in their work? 
&nbsp; 
“Many other artists work with soil. Kirsten Kurtz is an artist. She works with soil a lot and even has her own soil lab (Cornell Soil Health Laboratory, USA). I keep talking to her and learning. There are a lot of young artists in Shantiniketan who are using soil as a medium. But everyone has a different concern. My concern is the mountains, my village, and Uttarakhand. The stories are different. I can depict folk art through the soil. Others may be using the same soil but may depict something else.”&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
How has life been as a freelance artist?&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
“It has both pros and cons. Sometimes you see a lot of poverty. But sometimes it feels good too because you are empty from the inside. I did a job along with college, and I used to think that there was always a weight on me. For example, if I am assisting an artist, I am just following that artist’s style and do not have enough time for my creativity. I even used to dream of the school or my job. When your entire day goes into it, you do not have enough time for yourself.”&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
“When I left my job, I realised that if you want to create your own body of work, you need your own space. I sometimes face a lot of financial struggles, but I somehow manage.”&nbsp;

Do you have tips for people to better understand abstract art?

“Understanding abstract art is not important, but feeling it is more important. What you feel when you see art is important. Our eyes invoke emotions when they see a colour. Even when I display my art, people ask me about the theme of it all. I tell them to stand in front of the art, feel it, and tell me the emotions they are feeling. Everything you see makes you feel something.”

What are your suggestions for a budding artist?&nbsp;

“Every field has a lot of hard work. But in these ‘out of the box’ fields, you have to pay attention to your gut feeling. If you listen to it, it will be alright. For example, if you like painting but you also have to earn money, at that moment, we need to listen to your heart. If you don’t want to take up a job, don’t do it, but somehow you will have to generate money using your favourite way. For a budding artist, creating balance is important. Everything cannot be emotional. We have to live practically too. We must balance it all, be it art or work. There are no shortcuts.”

Architecture student Ellen Linderstad told Reuters she spent more than 24 hours on trains and buses from Stockholm to get to the event as she doesn't meet many other redheads in Sweden.

"It's really special to be in a place where all people have red hair, everywhere you look," the 21-year-old said.

Redheads make up 1% to 2% of the world’s population and 2% to 6% of people with Northern or Northwestern European ancestry.

The book, part of the new Ask The Experts in Psychology series in partnership with the British Psychological Society,&nbsp; says the first step is to understand the tricks that technology companies use to get you addicted to their apps and devices.

They "create products that deliberately tap into our innermost desires and needs so as to keep our attention on those products,” she says.

And those needs are the desire to be recognised, seen, valued, loved and needed, and the fear of missing out or FOMO.

Avoidance of rejection and abandonment is at the core of what we do daily, especially on social media. “We are born ready to socialise and in doing so we have a primary need to get others to take care of us to prevent us from being rejected, abandoned, and causing us to die,” says Knibbs.

Then there's the desire for novelty, excitement and reward. The apps send out a constant stream of prompts, pings and pushes, nudges, and rewards, to appeal to this aspect of our minds.

They had come from countries including the Netherlands, Canada, Spain and Japan to admire the setting for the early 19th century romance drama.&nbsp;Film student Ruby Maidment, their guide for the day, dished out historical anecdotes alongside snippets about "Bridgerton" shoots. &nbsp;

She pointed to a Marks &amp; Spencer's supermarket sign that made it on-screen after production editors missed it, while noting the handsome fees paid to locals to stay indoors during filming.

"A lot of people when thinking about where to go for holidays, they'll put their favourite show on and go 'Oh, actually, why don't we check out there?'," she told AFP.

This trend has a name: so-called set-jetting. It has emerged in recent years with the rise of streaming platforms, and has boomed further since the Coronavirus pandemic.

Movies and television series have become the leading source of travel inspiration, ahead of social networks, according to online travel group Expedia.&nbsp;

It found that 39 percent of tourists surveyed reported they had chosen a destination after seeing it featured on screen.

- 'Motivator' -

Set-jetting is "becoming a significant driver and motivator for travel," said Robin Johnson of the VisitBritain tourism authority.&nbsp;

"I think particularly for younger audiences -- Gen Z, millennials -- who are growing up on streaming," he added.

"It really makes sense for us Britain to capitalise on (it), because there is no bigger or better platform to promote a destination than high-end film or TV series. Money can't buy that sort of exposure."

Seven out of 10 international tourists have visited at least one film and TV location during their stay in the UK in the last 10 years, according to VisitBritain. Over 90 percent of potential visitors would be eager to do so in the future, it noted.

"There is not really much film back home where I am, so if I want to see any set of a TV show I need to come on a 17-hour flight on the other side of the world," said Shirdon, a journalism student.

Enduring franchises such as "James Bond" and "Harry Potter" continue to attract millions of visitors. But more recent productions, such as "Game of Thrones" in Northern Ireland, "Outlander" in Scotland, and more recently "The Crown" as well as "Bridgerton" in England, are sustaining the momentum.

To further boost this "powerful pull", VisitBritain and the British Film Commission, the industry's support agency, plan to launch a joint promotional campaign next year. Called "Starring GREAT Britain", it is aimed at attracting more travellers as well as new productions.

The campaign will place filming locations and associated visitor experiences "centre-stage, telling the story of Britain's regional diversity to drive visits and spend across the regions", according to the agencies.

"When you look at what has happened in the UK over the last 10 years, the UK is now perceived as one of the biggest places in the world to make film and television," Adrian Wootton, head of the British Film Commission, told AFP.&nbsp;

He noted the country had netted £3.1 billion ($4.1 billion) of foreign investment as a result.

The key to this success? A combination of breathtaking scenery, English-speaking talent, big investment in studios and other filmmaking hubs, as well as generous tax reliefs, he argued.

"Places like Northern Ireland have been transformed by a series... nobody would have considered it a tourist destination," before "Game of Thrones" and its recent prequel "House of the Dragon", Wootton added.

Dozens of young singles gathered this week to meet potential marriage partners in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore, the first attempt by a UK-based matrimonial app to help people find spouses in person in the conservative Islamic country.

Aimen, a 31-year-old woman who did not want to be further identified, said she used the app on the recommendation of her U.S.-based brother.

"I used the app for two weeks, but then I saw an ad for this event and thought, why not meet people in person?" she told Reuters. She said that her mother would have accompanied her as a chaperone but couldn't attend because of ill-health.

Muzz, launched in 2015 in the Britain, which also has a sizeable Muslim population, has over 1.5 million users in Pakistan, its second-largest market after Morocco.

Moaz, a 27-year-old man, said he has been using Muzz for a year and that he was hopeful of finding a wife through the app. "I do get matches, but they have different priorities," he said adding that girls on the app expect him to involve his parents from the beginning.

"That is not (immediately) possible," he said, stressing the need of getting to know someone before taking the next big step.

Annie's Matchmaking Party, another Lahore event last week, used an algorithm to match 20 young professionals after a selection process and invited them to the meet.

Noor ul Ain Choudhary, the 30-year-old organizer, faced criticism online that her event promoted a "hookup culture". She countered that it aimed to provide a safe space for singles to meet and connect. "In Pakistan, we've had two options: biased arranged marriages or time-consuming dating apps with no guarantees. Safety during meetings is also a concern," she said.

Abdullah Ahmed, 22, was bullish about in person events and said he was convinced he may have found his perfect match at the Muzz gathering. "The highlight was meeting an amazing girl," he said, beaming with excitement, adding that they instantly clicked and swapped social media handles.

The researchers assessed data on 651 infant and toddler food products sold in the top 10 US grocery chains held in the Institute’s FoodSwitch database against global benchmarks.

Out of these, 70 per cent failed to meet protein requirements and 44 per cent exceeded total sugar requirements, said the study published in the journal Nutrients&nbsp;on Wednesday (Aug 21).&nbsp;"A further one in four products did not meet calorie requirements and one in five exceeded recommended sodium limits," the research institute said in a release.

Baby food pouches, which grew in popularity by a whopping 900 per cent in the last 13 years, were also among the unhealthiest products assessed, with fewer than 7 per cent meeting total sugar recommendations.

While examining the food packaging, the study found bad marketing practices too. At least one prohibited claim was found in the packaging of 99.4 per cent products.

These claims included ‘non genetically modified’ (70 per cent), ‘organic’ (59 per cent), ‘no BPA’ (37 per cent), and ‘no artificial colours/flavours’ (25 per cent).

Noting that such claims are creating a so-called ‘health halo’ around these products, reseacher Daisy Coyle said, “The lack of regulation in this area leaves the door wide open for the food industry to deceive busy parents.”&nbsp;

In some cases, the names of products were misleading too. “Snack and finger foods often referred to fruit or vegetables in the product name, despite primarily being made of flour or other starches,” Coyle said.

The pilot study led by Penn State University in the US had two major findings: That parents who used humour had a better relationship with their kids, and that children of parents with good humour sense considered their relationship more positively when they grew up.

Over 50 per cent of respondents said their parents used humour. And 71.8% agreed that humour can be an effective parenting tool. Most respondents do or plan to use humour with their children and believe that it has more potential benefit than harm,&nbsp;

Among the children who grew up with humourous parents, 50.5% said they had a good relationship with them, and 44.2% reported they felt their parents did a good job raising them, said ScienceDaily in a report on the study.&nbsp;

"My hope is that people can learn to use humour as an effective parenting tool, not only to diffuse tension but develop resilience and cognitive and emotional flexibility in themselves and model it for their children," Levi said.
