If an experiment made by scientists in Japan is an indication, LED light exposure along with a cocktail of chemicals can isolate, separate and remove the dangerous parts in forever chemicals, scientifically called Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS.

The researchers reportedly managed to 'clean up' the forever chemicals at room temperature, and that too overnight, or just eight hours to be precise.

<h2>Cleaning up forever chemicals with LED: How it works&nbsp;</h2>

For the experiment, researchers at Japan’s Ritsumeikan University used a&nbsp;mixture made of cadmium sulfide nanocrystals, triethanolamine and water. The forever chemicals were then put into this mixture, and exposed to LED lights of 405-nanometer wavelength, burning at around 100 degrees Fahrenheit temperature.

The PFAS used in this experiment were perfluorooctanesulfonate or PFOS.

The aim was to start a photocatalytic reaction that eventually breaks down and separates the fluorine irons of the forever chemicals. The experiment proved to be a success, as per a report in New Atlas.

Not only was the separation and removal of these pollutants done, but the chemical process also freed up some parts of the dreaded PFAS that can be put to good use. These are fluorine ions, which can be used for industrial products.

<h2>What are 'forever chemicals or PFAS'?</h2>

PFAS is the name given to a bunch of chemicals that are resistant to water and extreme heat.

This is possible because of the presence of carbon-fluorine bonds in them.

While they are used in a number of products like water-proof cloths, non-stick cookware and foam used by firefighters, their very resilient qualities also make them dangerous. They are resistant to heat and would require at least 400 degrees Fahrenheit to burn. This makes their disposal near-impossible. PFAS are generally buried in landfills to prevent their further exposure.

Once ingested, they can stay in the human body 'forever', hence the name forever chemicals.

LED lights in room temperature can 'clean up' forever chemicals overnight, suggests study

New research has shown that America's rapid adoption of LED lighting might be saving money by using less electricity but it's making it harder to see the stars, due to increased light pollution.&nbsp;

The study published in the journal Science states that the night sky is getting 10 per cent brighter every year. The experts said the light pollution is being driven by the growth of cheaper, cleaner and brighter LED lighting.&nbsp;

Notably, it was in 2007 that the US Congress mandated that&nbsp;all lightbulbs be three times more efficient. Last month, the policy finally kicked into effect, effectively banning incandescent&nbsp;light bulbs in favour of LEDs and other compact fluorescents.&nbsp;

"Artificial lighting that escapes into the sky causes it to glow, preventing humans and animals from seeing the stars. Satellites can measure the light emitted upward, but they are not sensitive to all wavelengths produced by LED lighting or to light emitted horizontally," the study noted.&nbsp;

Consequently, the Milky Way is gradually disappearing from our view and so are the other fainter stars. For researchers, the absence of a dark sky means they are unable to peer deep into space and conduct their research.&nbsp;

The usually glitzy and shiny Las Vegas lit up in an unusual style on Tuesday night when a 366-foot-tall orb situated in the heart of the city, was switched on for the first time. Developed at a cost of $2 billion by Sphere Entertainment, the orb was made by using 1.2 million LEDs that were lit up simultaneously.&nbsp;

The sphere was illuminated to celebrate the Amerian day of Freedom, the Fourth of July. During the show, the 580,000 square foot fully-programmable LED exterior – the largest LED screen on earth shone in its full glory.&nbsp;

It displayed a welcome "Hello World" message followed by fireworks and stars-and-stripes animation. As the show continued, the LED canvas showed underwater scenes as well as&nbsp;highly-detailed lunar surfaces, which instantly went viral on social media platforms.&nbsp;

Although the sphere is yet to open officially, it will continue to light up on the outside, the sphere’s parent company, MSG Entertainment informed. Pop band U2 will kick off proceedings with the very first show at&nbsp;the venue this September.&nbsp;

With Formula 1 coming to the Las Vegas strip for the first time, the sphere is expected to be one of the biggest crowd-pullers. According to reports, during the Grand Prix in November, the Exosphere will feature race-related content, activations, and advertising.

Communications and Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will hold round-table discussion here on September 16 about opportunities and challenges before the electronics industry as also its expectations from the government so that the sector can grow at a fast pace.

An official release said that around 50 industry leaders have confirmed their participation for the round table.

Representation has been confirmed from all the major verticals of the electronics sector including mobile handsets, consumer electronics, strategic electronics, medical devices, Information Technology, electronic manufacturing services, electronic components, telecom and LED lighting.

During the meeting, Prasad will spell out his vision for the sector and interact with the CEOs.

The release said that the government attaches high priority to domestic electronics hardware manufacturing and it is one of the important pillars of both 'Make in India' and 'Digital India' programmes of the government. The schemes and initiatives for promotion of electronics hardware manufacturing have led to import substitution.

Over US Dollar 15 billion worth of investment proposals has been received by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) under its flagship investment scheme, the release stated.

Domestic manufacturing has grown from $29 billion (in 2014-15) to $70 billion (in 2018-19) and India has emerged as the second-largest manufacturer of mobile handsets in the world.

The release said that the number of manufacturing units for LCD/ LED TVs has gone up from 25 to 35, LED lights manufacturing units from 10 to 128 units, the sector has generated employment for over 20 lakh persons across the country and exports of electronics goods have also started growing rapidly.

It said that the sector has significant scope for the growth with the domestic market estimated at USD 400 billion by 2025 and India has potential to be the "Electronics Factory" of the world.

The National Policy on Electronics 2019 envisions positioning India as a global electronics hub by encouraging and driving capabilities for developing core components (including chipsets) and creating an enabling environment for the industry to compete globally.

MeitY is planning to embark upon a comprehensive investment and trade promotion programme, the release said.
