Gravitas: Escalating Israel-Hezbollah tensions | Will America's warning to Hezbollah work?

United States top military official on Sunday (June 23) warned that any sort of military offensive by Israel against Lebanon could lead to a response from Iran in defence of the Hezbollah group which would pose challenges for Washington to strengthen Tel Aviv's air defence.

Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown, chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that Iran would be more inclined to support Hezbollah than the Palestinian militant group Hamas especially if they felt that "Hezbollah was being significantly threatened".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his forces would be deployed along the northern border with Lebanon, where the fighting with the Iran-backed Hezbollah group has intensified, once the intense phase of the ongoing war in Gaza comes to an end.

Netanyahu further stated that Israel would return its displaced citizens to their evacuated northern border communities amid fears of a full-scale war in Lebanon.

"After the intense phase is finished, we will have the possibility to move part of the forces north. And we will do this. First and foremost for defensive purposes. And secondly, to bring our (evacuated) residents home," the Israeli PM stated in an interview to Israel's Channel 14.

He then said that he would try to fix this 'diplomatically' but would solve it 'in another way' if needed.

The Israeli military and Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have been trading fire for more than eight months in parallel with the Gaza war that started in early October last year. Since the Israel-Hamas war began, there have been almost daily exchanges of fire between the Israeli military and Hezbollah, sparking fears of a full-blown war between the two.

The United Nations warned on Friday (June 21) it was concerned about the escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon.

"One rash move - one miscalculation - could trigger a catastrophe that goes far beyond the border, and frankly, beyond imagination. Let's be clear: The people of the region and the people of the world cannot afford Lebanon to become another Gaza," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.

Israel-Hezbollah tensions rise: Hezbollah Chief warns Israel against war

The Israeli Army said that Lebanon’s Hezbollah launched a new round of projectiles into northern Israel on Wednesday (June 19), after Israel's warning of a "total war" with the militant group supported by Iran.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged his political allies to "get a grip" and give up "petty politics" in the wake of high-profile arguments between members of his coalition.

In an online video address, Netanyahu stated, "We are at war on several fronts, and we face great challenges and difficult decisions. Therefore, I strongly demand that all coalition partners get a grip and rise to the occasion."

"This is not the time for petty politics, this is not the time for legislation that endangers the coalition that is fighting for victory over our enemies," he said.

“We must all focus solely on the tasks before us: defeating Hamas, returning all our hostages and returning our residents safely to their homes, both in the north and in the south. And so I demand from everyone — put aside any other consideration. Put aside any partisan interest. Stand as one, together, behind our troops,” Netanyahu added.

Netanyahu's appeal follows a public spat between his Likud party and Itamar Ben Gvir, the leader of Otzma Yehudit, in which the former accused the latter of disclosing "state secrets."

Since the Palestinian militant group's strike on southern Israel on October 7, which sparked the Gaza war, Israel and Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, have been exchanging gunfire almost every day.

The military claimed in a statement that "approximately 15 projectiles were identified from Lebanon toward the area of Kiryat Shmona, several of which were intercepted by IDF (army) aerial defence array."

It stated that "IDF artillery struck the sources of fire" and that there were no injuries as a result of the incoming fire.

According to the military, its warplanes also destroyed infrastructure in Khiam, Lebanon, and a Hezbollah military military near Tyre.

In response to the "Israeli enemy attacks" on Yarun and Khiam, Hezbollah stated on Wednesday that it had launched "dozens of Katyusha rockets and artillery rounds" at a barracks in Kiryat Shmona, northern Israel.

The conflict on Wednesday occurred the day after the Israeli military declared that operational preparations for an invasion of Lebanon had been authorised.

The military released a statement saying, "As part of the situational assessment, operational plans for an offensive in Lebanon were approved and validated."

The decision coincided with Hezbollah's threat of destruction in the case of a "total war" between Israel and Palestine, issued on Tuesday by Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz.

According to a statement released by his office, "We are very close to the moment when we will decide to change the rules of the game against Hezbollah and Lebanon."

“In a total war, Hezbollah will be destroyed and Lebanon will be hit hard,” the statement added.

According to an AFP count, the Israel-Lebanon clashes have claimed the lives of at least 473 individuals in Lebanon, the majority of them were militants but also included 92 civilians.

According to Israeli officials, the country's north has seen the deaths of at least 15 soldiers and 11 civilians.

More than 100 rockets fired towards Israel after the killing of Hezbollah commander

The United Nations Security Council on Monday (June 10) backed a ceasefire proposal put forth by President Joe Biden to end the eight-month-old war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

As per reports, the resolution was adopted by the US and was supported by the other 14 of the 15 members of the Security Council. Russia, however, abstained from voting.

"Today we voted for peace," said the US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield after the vote.

"Today this Council sent a clear message to Hamas: accept the ceasefire deal on the table. Israel has already agreed to this deal and the fighting could stop today if Hamas would do the same," she added.

In a statement, as quoted by Reuters, the group said that it is ready to cooperate with mediators over implementing the principles of the plan "that are consistent with the demands of our people and resistance."

The deal remains uncertain as Hamas officials have insisted that any ceasefire agreement must guarantee a permanent end to the war — a demand Israel has firmly rejected, vowing to destroy Hamas and free the remaining captives.

US pushes for Gaza peace: Blinken visits Israel and Egypt to secure ceasefire

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is headed back to the Middle East to push a plan for a ceasefire. This will be Blinken's eighth visit to the region since the war erupted and will include a visit to Israel.

It comes as Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz and the Israeli general in charge of the Gaza Strip area on Sunday (June 9) announced their resignations.

Blinken in West Asia

As per an AFP report, the US diplomat will start his West Asia visit in Egypt with talks with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. From there, he will go to Israel for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Blinken's Middle East tour will also include visits to Jordan and Qatar, after which he will join Biden at the summit with the Group of Seven in Italy on Wednesday (June 12).

This visit follows President Joe Biden's May 31 proposal to end the conflict.

As per the report, the political dynamics in Israel and the silence from Hamas on Biden's proposal make the prospect of a ceasefire plan unlikely by the day. Hamas is yet to formally respond to the proposal.

Multiple high-level resignations in one day

Further complicating matters, Benny Gantz, a critical former MP stepped down from Netanyahu's war cabinet, saying that the prime minister has failed to finalise a plan for a "real victory", including coming up with post-war plans for Gaza.

The MP had asked for a post-war plan for Gaza approved by Netanyahu last month.

Gantz, a key centrist, leads in polls as Netanyahu's replacement if new elections are called. His resignation complicates US peace plans as his departure can help further embolden Netanyahu's far-right supporters, who are hostile to compromise.

Why did the Gaza commander resign?

Brig. Gen. Avi Rosenfeld, the head of the Israel Defense Force's Gaza Division, in a letter to his superiors, cited Hamas' October 7 attack and his failure to counter it as reasons for the resignation. He is only the second senior IDF officer to resign over the Hamas attack. Previously, the chief of the Military Intelligence Directorate announced he was quitting in April.

According to the Times of Israel, Rosenfeld said in the letter, "On October 7, I failed in my life’s mission to protect the [Gaza border communities]."

"Everyone has to take responsibility for their part, and I am the one in charge of the 143rd Division (the Gaza Division)," he said.

"As I promised, I will stay until my replacement takes over the role, and I will transfer command over the division in an orderly and responsible manner."

"I intend to continue to take part in the investigations and the learning of lessons, to do everything so that what happened on October 7 does not happen in the future," he added.

US Secretary of State Blinken returns to W. Asia on peace mission amid Israeli resignations

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will soon address the US Congress. PM Netanyahu, who has an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against him, will address US lawmakers in the Congress on July 24. He has received an invitation from Republican and Democratic leaders, reports AFP.

Invitation to Netanyahu

News of this potential visit comes amidst calls for a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and as Israel faces increasing international diplomatic isolation over the high casualty figures in Gaza.

It also follows a rare and critical call from Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in March for Israel to hold new elections, criticising the country's management of the Gaza conflict. Progressive Democrats have also voiced strong disapproval of Netanyahu's handling of the military response and have vowed to boycott his speech.

The invitation to Netanyahu was reportedly extended by the four party leaders in the US House and Senate, who expressed solidarity with Israel in its "struggle against terror, especially as Hamas continues to hold American and Israeli citizens captive."

While US media was speculating a visit date of June 13, Netanyahu's office has clarified that this date is not final and conflicts with a Jewish holiday.

Calls for ceasefire

Just last week, US President Biden proposed a three-phase plan that seeks to end the conflict, secure the release of all hostages, and reconstruct Gaza without Hamas in control.

However, Netanyahu's office, as per AFP, reiterated that military operations will continue until Israel's "goals" including the destruction of Hamas, "are achieved". Hamas has not responded to this plan.

Efforts for a truce and a hostage-prisoner exchange between the two warring sides are being mediated by US, Qatari, and Egyptian officials. At the same time, Israel is facing increased diplomatic pushback.

A gunman fired shots at the US embassy in Lebanon on Wednesday and was wounded in an exchange of fire with troops, the Lebanese army said.

The army said the attacker, a Syrian national, was detained and taken to hospital for treatment and soldiers were searching through the area for other gunmen.

The US embassy said small arms fire was reported near its entrance in the morning but that the facility and staff were safe. US ambassador Lisa Johnson is currently travelling outside Lebanon, according to diplomatic sources.

A Lebanese security source told Reuters on Wednesday morning that a member of the embassy's Lebanese security team was lightly wounded. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan later confirmed to NBC News that a Lebanese guard was wounded and was receiving treatment.

The embassy said it would remain closed to the public for the rest of Wednesday but planned to be open for business as usual on Thursday, June 6.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but another senior Lebanese security source told Reuters that the army was investigating possible links to the Islamic State group.

The source said the attacker had "ISIS" in English and "Islamic State" in Arabic written on clothes he was wearing. Lebanese security forces have detained two sheikhs as well as the attacker's family, the source added.

Reuters verified pictures of the suspected attacker circulating online and geolocated them to near the embassy. Reuters verified part of the Arabic writing on his vest, which read "Islamic."

A Reuters cameraman saw Lebanese security forces setting up checkpoints around the embassy as a U.S.-made helicopter provided to the Lebanese army circled above.

Lebanon's caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati said he was following up on the incident with the defence minister and security forces.

The US embassy lies north of Beirut in a highly secured zone with multiple checkpoints along the route to the entrance. It moved there from Beirut following a suicide attack in 1983 which killed more than 60 people.

In September, shots were fired near the embassy with no injuries reported.

In mid-October, in the early days of the Gaza war, scores of protesters gathered outside the embassy to demonstrate. Lebanese security forces used tear gas and water cannons to repel them.

Lebanon has been the scene of conflict between Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel since October in parallel to the Gaza war. Tens of thousands of people on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border have been uprooted amid fears that the war will escalate.

The United States has been making diplomatic efforts to ease violence along the border.

In a separate incident, a member of Lebanon's internal security forces assigned to provide security at the Saudi embassy in Lebanon committed suicide outside the embassy on Wednesday, a security source and a diplomatic source said.

The security source said the embassy guard died after shooting himself in the head. The diplomatic source said he suffered from mental health conditions.

In a significant move, the Republican-led US House of Representatives has passed a legislation that seeks to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). These bills and the subsequent sanctions are in response to the ICC prosecutor's decision to pursue arrest warrants for Israeli officials related to the ongoing war in Gaza.

In s statement, as reported by AFP, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said, "Today's vote draws a line in the sand for lawless action by ICC officials."

"The US firmly stands with Israel and refuses to allow international bureaucrats to baselessly issue arrest warrants to Israeli leadership for false crimes," he added.

Will it become a law?

While the bill is not expected to become law, as per the report, it underscores the strong backing for Israel in Congress amidst international criticism of its Gaza campaign.

Last month, the White House had also condemned the ICC's decision to seek these arrest warrants.

It is unlikely to take up the measure for a vote in the Senate, which has a narrow Democratic majority.

However, if it were to pass, the legislation would impose sanctions on individuals involved in ICC prosecutions of Americans or citizens of US allies who are not members of the ICC, such as Israel.

These sanctions would include barring entry to the US, revoking visas, and restricting them from property transactions in the nation.

ICC's stand

Recently, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan said that after more than seven months into the conflict in Gaza, there were reasonable grounds to believe that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defence chief "bear criminal responsibility" for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Khan also sought to penalise three Hamas leaders for the same.

Netanyahu, however, called the ICC's decision absurd, arguing that it targets all of Israel.

The Gaza conflict escalated dramatically last October, when Israel launched an extensive air and ground offensive in Gaza, aiming to dismantle Hamas. This was retaliation for a brutal Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, which left around 1,200 people dead and over 250 taken hostages, according to Israeli figures.

Currently, approximately 120 hostages remain in Gaza.

Meanwhile, according to local health authorities, the Israeli military's retaliatory campaign has resulted in over 36,000 deaths in densely populated Gaza. They also report that thousands of bodies remain buried under rubble.

Firefighters on Tuesday (June 4) battled blazes across northern Israel that continued to rage after being ignited the previous day by rockets and drones launched by Hezbollah from Lebanon.

The Israel Fire and Rescue Services statement said, “over 30 firefighting crews were working to put out the fires" which led to the closure of several major roads in the Galilee area.

In Kiryat Shmona, firefighters dispersed throughout the mostly evacuated city to control the flames and prevent them from reaching homes. The fire service earlier reported that several yards, pergolas, and the roof of at least one home were on fire.

In Kibbutz Kfar GIladi, a video shared on social media showed a local security team battling flames encroaching on the community.

Notably, the fire service said the blazes had raged for over 13 hours, while noting the intense heatwave blanketing the affected areas.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, it was assisting in the firefighting efforts, adding that six reservists lightly hurt from smoke inhalation were taken to a hospital.

Five citizens who were slightly hurt from smoke inhalation, were treated at Ziv Medical Center in Safed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office released a statement saying the premier held a review with senior security officials “about the developments in northern Israel” and was updated about the firefighting efforts.

The fires erupted amid escalating cross-border skirmishes between Israel and Hezbollah, with the Iran-backed militant group launching numerous barrages at the Galilee and Golan Heights in recent days.

According to the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, a series of rocket and drone attacks on Sunday sparked bushfires that consumed 10,000 dunams (over 2,470 acres) of foliage in open areas, including nature reserves.

It is worth mentioning here that since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israel along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there.

So far, the fight on the border has resulted in 10 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 14 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.

However, Hezbollah has named 328 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing conflict. In Lebanon, another 62 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and dozens of civilians have been killed.

Israel has expressed willingness to pursue a diplomatic solution to the conflict, but has warned of the possibility of going to war against Hezbollah to restore security in the north, where tens of thousands of civilians are currently displaced.

Also read: Netanyahu deems Biden’s Gaza proposal ‘partial’ but says plan can kick off without full agreement It is worth mentioning here that since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israel along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. Hagari assured that the circumstances of their deaths are being thoroughly investigated, with findings to be shared transparently with the families first and then with the public.

Chaim Peri, who was 80, was at his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz during the Hamas attack. In a conversation with Reuters, his son recounted that Peri tried to protect his wife by hiding her behind a sofa and eventually surrendered to the gunmen to save her.

UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting over Israel attacks on Rafah

Clashes erupted on Sunday (May 26) between Jewish pilgrims and the police at a religious festival site in northern Israel. The location was closed to large gatherings this year due to rocket attacks from Lebanon following a deadly crowd crush that killed 45 people there three years ago.

The all-night sessions of prayers, mystical songs and dance had in previous years drawn crowds in the tens of thousands.

However, this year’s festival was cancelled since the site at Meron in the Galilee region has been targeted by rocket fire from Lebanon.

It is worth mentioning that many northern Israeli towns have been evacuated since Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon began firing at them following Hamas’ Oct 7 assault on southern Israel, which sparked the war in Gaza.

Despite the closure, authorities turned away thousands of pilgrims over the weekend. However, hundreds managed to reach the site, leading to a tense situation. Police reported property damage and objects thrown at officers, resulting in injuries to 19 of them.

Israeli media reported that several people in the unauthorised crowd were hurt. At least one officer was suspended for pushing an older man to the ground, and police said it was examining other incidents from the site.

Jewish pilgrims and police clash at restricted Mount Meron in Israel

Israel on Thursday (May 23) warned that its ties with countries recognising a Palestinian state will face "serious consequences". This comes as Ireland, Norway and Spain prepare to recognise it from next week.

"There will be additional serious consequences for relations with their countries following the decision they made," said Jacob Blitstein, a top official, in a statement released by Israel's foreign ministry.

Recognition 'does not promote peace'

Blitstein, as per AFP, made the statement during a meeting with the envoys of Ireland, Norway and Spain. During the meeting, he "reprimanded the ambassadors for the perverse decision of their governments to recognise a Palestinian state.

Reprimanding them for their governments' move announced on Wednesday (May 22), he said that the recognition makes it "more difficult to promote a deal for the release of hostages" still held in Gaza by Palestinian militants.

He also showed them a video of the kidnapping of five women soldiers during the October 7 attack by Hamas.

The video, which was also released to the media, shows the women sitting on the ground, some with blood on their faces, with their hands tied following their capture from the Nahal Oz base in southern Israel.

Israeli government spokesperson, Avi Hyman, addressing the envoys, said: "If Israel has learned anything in recent months, it is that our children deserve a better, safer future - not the resurrection of old, failed policies created by blindsided back-seat drivers abroad."

"A recognition of a Palestinian state does not promote peace. It perpetuates war. Any kind of so-called solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that compromises Israel's security does not mean peace. There will be zero compromise on our security."

"Other than the October 7th massacre, what exactly has changed in the Palestinian Authority to warrants this prize?" questioned Hyman.

"They continue with their policy of pay for slay, they continue to educate their children to hate, they still haven't held an election in 19 years...Fatah terrorists proudly participated in the October 7th massacre. The Palestinian Authority has not condemned the October 7th massacre."

"So what is this Palestinian state that you recognised? It is simply a public declaration that spits in the face of the Israeli people, while we fight a war for our very survival, against the genocidal forces that surround us," he remarked.

Recognising the Palestinian state

The announcement by the three nations comes after the International Criminal Court prosecutor announced that he would seek arrest warrants for Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and defence minister. He said he would also seek warrants against Hamas leaders over alleged war crimes during the Gaza conflict.

As per Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who is a major force behind the effort to recognise the Palestinian state, the recognition would reinforce efforts to revive a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict.
