A lesser-known but escalating crisis is gripping the Middle East, unfolding along the Syrian-Jordanian border — captagon, an amphetamine that's become a multimillion-dollar industry.

This potent drug, as per the Wall Street Journal, is used by everyone, from students to fighters. The drug has entrenched itself in everyday life, cutting across social and economic classes.

A massive trade

According to the WSJ report, smugglers find creative methods to move the drug across borders, from drones and homing pigeons to catapults and child couriers.

The multi-billion dollar drug trade is reportedly fuelling a massive trade that has lined the pockets of Iran-backed militias, including the Hezbollah, which allegedly funnels drug profits into arms procurement to fuel the war against Israel.

Captagon isn't just a street-level problem; it has powerful patrons. Syria's Bashar al-Assad regime is accused of industrialising captagon production to offset the crushing toll of international sanctions.

Syrian and Lebanese operations, often linked with Iran-backed factions, allegedly control vast networks in production, trafficking, and profit, driving the drug's rapid proliferation in the region.

Syria, however, denies any role in the drug trade, despite reports that the Assad regime fetches billions annually from captagon.

According to the Observatory of Political and Economic Networks, a Syrian and Arab research organisation that tracks the captagon trade, the regime fetched an annual average of about $2.4 billion between 2020 to 2022 — roughly one-fourth of Syria's GDP.

US and Captagon

The US sees captagon as a looming threat to stability in allied nations like Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

In 2022, President Biden signed the Captagon Act, demanding a US strategy to disrupt smuggling and build law-enforcement partnerships in the Middle East against captagon networks.

Jordan, which has deployed a third of its army along the border to curb the flow of drugs across its border with Syria, is cracking down hard on smuggling.

The nation's soldiers have even adopted shoot-to-kill policy to deal with the smugglers.

US satellite-guided bombs and intelligence sharing have bolstered Jordan’s operations, yet the drug trade remains rampant.

According to the New Lines Institute, since the start of Gaza conflict, seizures of captagon in Jordan have spiked fourfold and are often accompanied by illicit arms shipment.

Jordan’s antidrug department last year arrested about 35,000 people on drug charges, a 24% increase from the year before. In June, Jordanian authorities foiled two smuggling operations involving nearly 10 million illicit pills, worth up to $200 million, destined for Saudi Arabia.

What is Captagon?

Originally developed in Germany in the 1960s to treat conditions like ADHD.

Its main ingredient as per the report is pseudoephedrine, commonly found in cold and flu medication. The drug itself is versatile and dangerous, often laced with sedatives, stimulants, and even heavy metals—enhancements that increase dependency but heighten health risks.

Captagon was outlawed in the 80s, but Syrian and Lebanese traffickers saw opportunity in its potency and high demand. Production exploded during the Syrian civil war, transforming Syria into a captagon powerhouse.

Potent drug 'captagon' fueling conflict, crime, and party scenes across the Middle East: Report

Hezbollah's new chief Naim Qassem delivered his inaugural address on Wednesday (Oct 30), a day after he was appointed as the Lebanon-based group's secretary general.

In his first speech, Qassem said he would accept a ceasefire with Israel under 'conditions' but vowed to continue on the path of Sayyed Hassen Nasrallah, the former Hezbollah chief killed in an Israeli airstrike on September 27.

"My work programme is a continuation of the work programme of our leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah," Qassem announced.

The leader said in his address that the "Zionist regime" had committed "39,000 violations" against Lebanon.

He also accused Israel of seeking to build settlements in southern Lebanon.

Qassem claimed that both the US and the EU were partner in 'genocidal' crimes committed by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon.

"Israel plans to occupy Lebanon and build settlements in the Arab country, but Hezbollah stands in the way of the Israeli regime," Qassem said.

Qassem added that the group was recovering after sustaining "painful" blows over the last months.

The Hezbollah leader warned that the Jewish nation would face severe consequences if its forces didn't withdraw from Lebanese soil urgently.

Meanwhile, in an explosive message to Naim Qassem, Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant Wednesday (Oct 30) warned that his appointment was “temporary” and not “for long.”

Gallant also posted a photo of the new leader, who was appointed on October 29 following the death of Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike on September 27.

The Israeli government also suggested that Qassem’s tenure may be brief, saying, “His tenure in this position may be the shortest in the history of this terrorist organisation if he follows in the footsteps of his predecessors.”

‘Temporary appointment,’ Israel’s explosive message to Hezbollah’s new chief Qassem

The question of whether Hezbollah has the upper hand on the ground remains contentious amid ongoing conflict in the region. Analysts point to Hezbollah's extensive military capabilities, strategic alliances, and local support, suggesting they may have an advantage in certain areas. However, the situation is fluid, and the dynamics can shift rapidly based on military engagements and political developments.

Does Hezbollah Have The Upper Hand On Ground?

Sheikh Naim Qassem succeeds Hassan Nasrallah as the new Hezbollah Chief. Naim Qassem has been a senior figure in Iran-backed group for more than 30 years. Nasrallah was killed in Beirut in late September by an Israeli strike. Since then many other senior Hezbollah officials have also been targeted. Hezbollah says Qassem was elected for his ‘adherence to principles and goals of Hezbollah’. Watch to know more!

Lebanon-Israel: 4 Israeli Soldiers Killed In Lebanon Combat: Report

French President Emmanuel Macron warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that "civilisation is not best defended by sowing barbarism ourselves."

Macron said this at a conference hosted by him in Paris for Lebanon to improve the humanitarian situation in the country.

The conference raised US $200 million for Lebanon's military and US $800 million for humanitarian aid in the region.

Macron urged Netanyahu for a ceasefire and also called to end the Israeli attacks on UN peacekeepers while saying there was no justification for it.

Macron, at the beginning of his speech, shared his "bitter regret" that Iran had "engaged" the Lebanese group Hezbollah "against Israel" when the most crucial need of Lebanon right now is to "stay away from the Gaza war."

While addressing Netanyahu, with whom his relationship has soared, Macron said, "We have been talking a lot in recent days about a war of civilisations or about civilisations that must be defended. I am not sure that we defend a civilisation by sowing barbarism ourselves.”

In his response, Netanyahu said on Europe 1 radion, "It is a war of civilisations against barbarism; we are at the forefront of this war and France must support Israel.”

At the conference, Macron vowed that his country would help in training as many as 6,000 extra Lebanese official forces.

I am not sure that we defend a civilisation by sowing barbarism ourselves.” In his response, Netanyahu said on Europe 1 radion, "It is a war of civilisations against barbarism; we are at the forefront of this war and France must support Israel.” At the conference, Macron vowed that his country would help in training as many as 6,000 extra Lebanese official forces. Israel-Hezbollah War: Deadliest Day For Journalists In Lebanon

Lebanon said an Israeli strike on a residence housing media workers killed two journalists and a broadcast engineer on Friday, in an attack the minister of information branded a "war crime".

Pro-Iran Lebanese television channel Al Mayadeen said a cameraman and broadcast engineer were killed in the strike on a journalists' residence in Hasbaya, south Lebanon.

Another TV outlet, Al-Manar, run by Hezbollah, said one of its video journalists was also killed in the strike on a bungalow located in a resort that several media organisations covering the Israel-Hezbollah war had rented out.

"The Israeli enemy waited for the journalists' nighttime break to betray them in their sleep," Information Minister Ziad Makary said in a post on X.

"This is an assassination, after monitoring and tracking, with prior planning and design, as there were 18 journalists there representing seven media institutions. This is a war crime."

Journalists from other media organisations, including Lebanese broadcaster Al-Jadeed, Sky News Arabic and Al Jazeera English, were also resting nearby when the strike hit overnight.

Israel has not commented on the strike, which, according to Lebanon's health ministry, also wounded three other people.

The area where the journalists were located is outside Hezbollah's traditional strongholds.

Israel has been at war with Hezbollah in Lebanon since late last month, in a bid to secure its northern border after nearly a year of cross-border fire from the Iran-backed armed group.

Hezbollah began low-intensity strikes on Israel in support of its Palestinian ally Hamas following the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, the deadliest in its history.

After nearly a year of war in Gaza sparked by the attack, Israel expanded its focus to Lebanon and last month launched a massive bombing campaign targeting mainly Hezbollah strongholds across the country, sending in ground troops on September 30.

The war in Lebanon has killed at least 1,580 people, according to an AFP tally of Lebanese health ministry figures.

Israel's military on Friday said it had struck more than 200 militant targets in Lebanon over the past day.

It also announced the deaths of five soldiers in fighting in south Lebanon.

- Gaza strikes -

In Gaza, the civil defence agency said Israeli air strikes hit two homes at dawn on Friday in Khan Yunis, the Palestinian territory's main southern city.

According to agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal, 14 were killed in a strike that hit the home of the Al-Fara family, and another six were killed in a separate raid.

In north Gaza, the Israeli military on Friday said dozens of militants were killed around Jabalia, in north Gaza, over the previous day.

Israel launched a major assault on north Gaza earlier this month, saying it aims to prevent Hamas from regrouping there.

The civil defence's Bassal said "more than 770 people have been killed" in northern Gaza in the 19 days since the Israeli operation began there.

The war in Gaza began with Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,206 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures.

The militants also took 251 people hostage, 97 of whom are still in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.

Israel's retaliatory campaign in Gaza has killed 42,847 people, the majority civilians, according to data from the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory, data which the UN considers reliable.

Multiple bids to stop the war have failed, though Israel's key backer the United States has voiced hope that the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar last week could serve as an opening for a deal.

A senior Hamas official told AFP that a delegation from the group's Doha-based leadership discussed "ideas and proposals" related to a Gaza truce with Egyptian officials in Cairo on Thursday.

"Hamas has expressed readiness to stop the fighting, but Israel must commit to a ceasefire, withdraw from the Gaza Strip, allow the return of displaced people, agree to a serious prisoner exchange deal and allow the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza," the official said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he welcomed mediator Egypt's readiness to reach a deal "for the release of the hostages" held by militants in Gaza.

Netanyahu directed the head of Israel's Mossad spy agency to leave for Qatar on Sunday to "advance a series of initiatives that are on the agenda", his office said.

Qatar, Egypt and the United States have long tried to mediate a ceasefire in the Gaza war.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Qatar's leaders in Doha on Thursday on his 11th trip to the region since the start of the Gaza war.

During the trip, which comes less than two weeks before US elections, Blinken said mediators would explore new options.

Israeli and US officials as well as some analysts said Sinwar had been a key obstacle to a deal which would release the hostages still held in Gaza.

Lebanon reports 3 media workers killed in Israeli strike

Lebanon’s Health Minister Firass Abiad, on Friday (Oct 25) said that Israeli strikes have killed over 160 rescuers and healthcare personnel over the past year amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah.

"The total number of rescuers and health sector workers killed has so far has reached 163, with 272 others wounded," Abiad stated in a press briefing detailing the "damage caused by Israeli attacks on the health sector in Lebanon."

The conflict initially began after Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, started carrying out minor strikes on Israel in solidarity with the Palestinian militant group Hamas following their October 7 attack on Israel. The violence has escalated dramatically since an Israeli airstrike killed Hezbollah leader Nasrallah in Beirut’s southern suburbs on September 27.

Last month, Israel intensified its offensive by targeting Hezbollah strongholds, deploying ground troops, and eliminating several high-ranking leaders within the Lebanon-based militant group.

Israel claims that its strikes focus on military targets within Lebanon and Gaza and that it wants to prevent civilian casualties. Israel accuses Hezbollah, like Hamas, of hiding itself within civilian areas, a claim both groups deny.

Meanwhile, on Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati to discuss Israel’s strikes. Following the meeting, Blinken pledged to urgently seek a diplomatic solution in Lebanon. He appealed to Israel to avoid civilian casualties but did not call for an immediate ceasefire.

"We have a sense of real urgency in getting to a diplomatic resolution and the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, such that there can be real security along the border between Israel and Lebanon," Blinken said, referring to calls for the disarmament of Hezbollah.

Over 160 rescuers killed in year-long Israel-Hezbollah clashes, says Lebanon's health minister

Israel-Lebanon War: At Least 17 Air Strikes Hit Beirut On Wednesday: Lebanese Media

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin on Wednesday (Oct 23) voiced "deep concern" over recent Israeli airstrikes on the Lebanese army that killed three soldiers over the weekend.

With this, the death toll for Lebanese troops has reached eight, since an all-out war erupted between Israel and Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.

Speaking to his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant, Lloyd "expressed his deep concern about the reports of strikes against the Lebanese Armed Forces."

The Lebanese military in a statement on Sunday alleged that an Israeli strike had targeted the soldiers' vehicle in the country's south. Israel, however, claimed that it was pounding strongholds of Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Ensure the safety of peacekeepers

Pentagon spokesperson Major General Pat Ryder in a statement said that Austin "emphasised the importance of taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security" of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon — the Lebanese Armed Forces and UNIFIL forces.

The US Defence secretary also expressed his condolences for the death of the Israeli brigade commander, Colonel Ahsan Daksa, who was killed in the Jabalia area.

UNIFIL concerns

Lloyd's statement concerning the safety of peacekeepers come as the UNIFIL accused Tel Aviv of attacking its members multiple times in recent weeks.

Israel had even urged the United Nations peacekeepers to evacuate to avoid injuries or worse as it expands its war against Hezbollah. However, the peacekeepers on Oct 14 said they will maintain their positions.

In a statement, UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said, "The decision was made that UNIFIL would currently stay in all its positions in spite of the calls that were made by the Israel Defense Forces to vacate the positions that are in the vicinity of the Blue Line."

He further said that the UN Secretary-General António Guterres has confirmed the plans, "I want to emphasise that this decision still remains."

Potential successor of Hezbollah, Safieddine killed in Israeli attacks, group confirms

Lebanon's Hezbollah movement said on Tuesday there would be no negotiations while fighting continued with Israel and it claimed sole responsibility for a drone attack on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's holiday home.

The group "takes full and sole responsibility" for targeting Netanyahu's house, Mohammad Afif, head of the Iranian-backed militant group's media office, told a press conference in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

"If our hands didn't reach you the previous time, then days, nights, and the battlefield are still between us," he said.

Hezbollah takes ‘sole responsibility’ for targeting Netanyahu’s residence; says there would be no negotiations

According to reports, Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem has fled from Lebanon and has gone into hiding in Tehran. The report of Qassem fleeing Lebanon came at a time when Israel's military operations against Hezbollah intensified and led to the killing of some of the major leaders of the organisation, which included its chief, Hassan Nasrallah.

As per a report published in UAE-based Erem News, Qassem boarded an Iranian aircraft and left Lebanon a week ago. He was on the same plane that Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was aboard after orders were issued from the Islamic Republic's leadership amid rising concern for his safety. "His transfer was ordered by top leaders of the Islamic Republic for fear of assassination by the Israel government," a source was quoted as saying in the report. As per the report, Qassem was on the Israeli government's wanted list. Naim Qassem is the deputy secretary general of Hezbollah. Recently, Qassem said that conflict in Lebanon could be brought to a halt only through a ceasefire. Qassem had further threatened that the terror group would expand its missile strikes in Israel. After the death of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and the reported killing of Hashem Safieddine, Naim Qassem became the top official of Hezbollah. As per Reuters, Qassem said that he supported the efforts of Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri to reach a truce, without mention of any precondition. Watch: Israel-Hezbollah: How Hezbollah's Drone Attacks Confuse Israeli Air Defences For the first time, Hezbollah did not mention the end of the Gaza war as a pre-condition to reach a truce in Lebanon. "We support the political efforts that [Lebanese Parliament Speaker] Nabih Berri is undertaking towards a ceasefire," said Qassem, in a televised speech. "Since the Israeli enemy targeted all of Lebanon, we have the right from a defensive position to target any place" in Israel, "whether the centre, the north or the south", he was quoted as saying by news agency AFP. "I am telling the Israeli home front: the solution is a ceasefire... the resistance [Hezbollah] will not be defeated because this is its land," added the Hezbollah leader. Netanyahu says Iran proxies tried to 'assassinate' him and his wife, warns will pay 'heavy price'

The United States on Saturday (Oct 19) called for Israel to scale back its strikes on Beirut, Lebanon, citing the rising civilian death toll as "far too high".

Just hours after Israel carried out heavy strikes on Hezbollah positions in the southern suburbs of the capital, sending plumes of smoke billowing over the city, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said: "We'd like to see Israel scale back on some of the strikes it's taking, especially in and around Beirut".

This comes as America, Israel's strongest ally, has been urging Tehran to do more to safeguard civilians in Lebanon and Gaza. Last week, the US in a confidential letter from Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken asked Israeli officials to take concrete measures to address the worsening situation in Gaza within 30 days. The US reportedly warned Tehran that without concrete steps to address the situation, the warring nation could face potential restrictions on American military aid.

'India rushed to aid even before asking': Lebanese envoy as New Delhi sends humanitarian aid to Lebanon

For decades now, a simple tactic used on the battlefield was swarming, which involves attacking the enemy with a higher number of autonomous systems from multiple directions than the other side. This attack is not necessarily done with precision or force but by sheer numbers.

However, as time has evolved, in modern warfare, drones can perform the task.

Last Sunday, it only took a few drones for Iran-backed Lebanon-based Hezbollah to infiltrate Israel's normally impenetrable "Iron Dome" air defences.

However, the impact was vast, on one of the bloodiest days since October 7, 2023.

Hezbollah strike killed four Israeli soldiers and injured around 60 others at a military base in northern Israel. The Lebanon-based militant group said that it targeted the camp using a "Swarm of kamikaze drones”, which “broke through the Israel defence radars without detection.”

Israeli military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said that they are "studying and investigating the incident – how a drone infiltrated without warning and struck the base”. His conclusion was bashful: “We must provide better defence.”

In the modern era of war, drone swarms are almost unsurprising. The Israel-Gaza conflict and the Ukraine-Russia war are the key examples of that. Notably, amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, reports have suggested that up to 10,000 drones are in the air on any given day.

Meanwhile, in the Red Sea, the Yemen-based Houthi rebels have also shown an increasing inclination towards using swarms of sea drones to threaten commercial ships and intimidate Western warships since the beginning of the war in Gaza, over a year ago.

According to a report by The Daily Telegraph, in January, a group of 18 drones, believed to be relatively expensive Iranian-designed Shahad 136, were flown towards merchant vessels and American and British warships patrolling the region.

Professor Michael Clarke, visiting professor in the Department of War Studies at King’s College, London told The Daily Telegraph: "This isn’t revolutionary, but it is different. Drones have existed for a very long time, but when you think about them in the Afghanistan war [for example], they existed in small numbers because people thought of them as airplanes without pilots, and most were almost as big as that."

He also noted how the West was “very slow to cop to the idea that much smaller, cheaper drones could be used as weapons, and in numbers, that’s the point. Not three or four, [but] 40 or 50 potentially.”

Clarke said that he believes it is a matter that only underlines how the soldiers of the future won’t necessarily need simply “belligerence and the ability to carry their luggage across the Brecon Beacons in terrible weather.” He added, that as the enemy unleashes the drones of war, they’ll need to be technically proficient.
