Stellantis together with its Chinese partner Leapmotor have chosen Spain to build their B10 electric crossover using a USD 200 million capital investment based on information from a source as well as the Chinese embassy in Spain. The B10 will begin its European market manufacturing at production facilities across Europe starting from 2026.
Multiple European sites are currently under review by the companies with facilities located in Germany and Slovakia. Spain stands as the preferred location among the potential production sites. The Chinese embassy named Zaragoza in northeastern Spain as the planned manufacturing destination without elaborating on detailed information about the project.
The source states that Stellantis alongside Leapmotor are purposefully working to boost procurement from Spanish suppliers because this will help them secure the maximum available government financial aid. The companies are planning first-quarter 2026 production for the B10 model before making a final production decision.

Stellantis and Leapmotor eye Spain for B10 EV production with 200 million euros investment

Chinese carmaker Leapmotor, an electric vehicle (EV) partner of global car manufacturer Stellantis, unveiled a new smart EV on Tuesday, escalating competition in the this fast-evolving market. The 1,500-km range model from Leapmotor, the B10, comes for a price tag of USD 20,535 (under 150,000 yuan) and features high-end smart driving technology including lidar and tools to navigate urban traffic.
The launch comes just a day after industry titan BYD cut the entry price for smart EVs, providing autonomous driving features on models starting at about USD 9,555. Such an action could open the door to another price war, analysts say, qualitatively compelling automakers to double down on efforts to make vehicles more technologically sound and less costly.

Leapmotor stated that the pre-sales of B10 will commence on March 10, representing its first experience with equipping its electric vehicles with lidar sensors — a critical component necessary in autonomous driving. The technology allows the vehicle to detect and navigate complex urban environments, an area where Tesla and other global automakers have been heavily investing.
BYD’s aggressive pricing plan, announced on Monday, significantly undercuts rivals, including Tesla, which has been under intensifying pressure from Chinese car makers. By incorporating intelligent driving technologies into even its more affordable models, the carmaker reflects a strategic decision to democratise advanced driver assistance technologies to a broader customer base.
As China’s EV market becomes more crowded, automakers are prioritising affordability and innovation. The price war is expected to put further pressure on legacy brands, compelling them to enhance their offerings while keeping costs low. Leapmotor’s B10 launch reinforces this trend, as more automakers race to introduce high-tech features in budget-friendly models.
As Chinese manufacturers continue to lead in EV adoption and smart technology integration, the global industry will likely see ripple effects, pushing more brands to adopt similar strategies to remain competitive.

China’s Leapmotor unveils USD 20,000 smart EV amid growing price war

Stellantis and its Chinese partner Leapmotor have abandoned plans to manufacture their second electric vehicle model at Stellantis's Polish facility, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The joint venture is now evaluating alternative production locations for the B10 electric crossover, including Stellantis's Opel factory in Eisenach, Germany, and its Trnava plant in Slovakia. This strategic pivot comes in the wake of Chinese government pressure on domestic automakers to reconsider investments in EU countries that supported recent tariffs on Chinese-made EVs.

The decision follows a crucial October 10 meeting where China's Ministry of Commerce reportedly instructed Chinese automakers to halt major investment plans in EU nations that backed the tariff proposal. Just four days after this meeting, both companies showcased the B10 EV at the Paris Motor Show, celebrating it as a milestone in their partnership, despite the brewing tensions behind the scenes.

The situation highlights the complex interplay between trade policy and automotive manufacturing strategies. Poland, along with nine other EU members, supported the implementation of tariffs up to 45% on imported Chinese-made EVs. In contrast, Germany and Slovakia, now under consideration as alternative production sites, were among the five EU members that opposed these tariffs, which took effect on October 30.

Currently, Stellantis's Tychy plant in Poland manufactures the T03 compact EV using components shipped from China. The status of this existing production arrangement remains unclear, as does any potential impact on employment at the facility. Sources indicate that while Germany is being considered as an alternative location, it would involve higher operational costs due to increased utility and labour expenses.

The B10 represents a crucial element in Leapmotor’s international expansion strategy, being the first of its B series EVs designed specifically for markets outside China. The company began its European sales operations in September, marking a significant step in its global ambitions. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares had previously positioned the partnership with Leapmotor and the B10 project as key to delivering "high-tech, affordable" EVs to consumers beyond China's borders.

The joint venture structure, with Stellantis holding a 51% stake and Leapmotor controlling the remaining 49% through Leapmotor International, underscores the significance of this collaboration for both parties. Under Chinese regulations, companies must obtain Beijing's approval for overseas direct investments, adding another layer of complexity to international manufacturing decisions.

Neither Stellantis nor Leapmotor have officially commented on the production site change, and representatives from the Chinese government, including the State Council Information Office and Ministry of Commerce, have not responded to requests for comment. Similarly, the Polish industry ministry, German and Slovak governments, and Opel have yet to provide official statements on the matter.

Stellantis and Leapmotor abandon Polish EV production plans

Leapmotor, a Chinese automaker, is poised to enter the European market with two electric vehicle (EV) models, as announced by the company and its partner Stellantis on Tuesday. This move signifies an expansion of their affordable EV offerings in the region.

The joint venture, known as Leapmotor International, is majority-owned by Stellantis with a 51 per cent stake. This partnership grants Stellantis exclusive rights to manufacture, export, and sell Leapmotor products outside of China, marking a pioneering arrangement for a traditional Western automaker.

The two models set to debut in Europe are the T03 compact car and the C10 SUV. The T03 will be available for orders starting from late September, with a competitive starting price of 18,900 euros (USD 20,990). Following closely, the C10 SUV will arrive in dealerships in October, priced from 36,400 euros. Both vehicles were unveiled to the European market for the first time near Milan on Tuesday.

Initially, the T03 will be imported from China. However, plans are in place to assemble this model in Europe at Stellantis' Tychy plant in Poland. This strategic move could potentially help the brand circumvent European Union tariffs on imported Chinese EVs.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares has also hinted at the possibility of manufacturing the C10 model in Europe, though specific details have not been disclosed.

The introduction of Leapmotor as Stellantis' 15th brand is part of a broader strategy to diversify and expand its range of affordable EVs. This initiative aligns with Stellantis' ongoing electrification efforts and aims to ensure compliance with EU emission regulations, particularly in light of the current soft global demand for EVs.

Tavares has taken a firm stance against the European auto lobby ACEA's call for relief from intermediate CO2 targets for cars and vans, which are set to take effect in the EU in 2025. He emphasised last week the importance of the industry being able to sell EVs at prices comparable to petrol models.

This partnership between Leapmotor and Stellantis shows a significant step in the global automotive landscape, blending Chinese EV technology with European manufacturing expertise. It also reflects the ongoing shift in the industry towards electrification and the increasing competition in the affordable EV segment.

As these new models enter the European market, they are likely to face both opportunities and challenges. The competitive pricing strategy could appeal to budget-conscious consumers looking to transition to electric vehicles. However, they will also need to contend with established European and other international brands in an increasingly crowded EV market.

China's Leapmotor and Stellantis open orders in Europe for budget EVs

A joint venture led by Stellantis has commenced production of electric vehicles designed by the Chinese automaker Leapmotor at Stellantis' manufacturing facility in Tychy, Poland. This information was reported by analysts at Jefferies, who cited statements made by Leapmotor's management team.

In a report released late on Sunday, Jefferies disclosed that Leapmotor's management had revealed during an analyst call that the initial units of their T03 small electric vehicle had been manufactured at Stellantis' assembly plant in Poland in the previous week. The production is reportedly on schedule to transition to mass manufacturing in September.

This development aligns with a Reuters report from March, which, based on information from two sources close to the matter, had indicated that Stellantis had selected its Polish facility as the primary production site in Europe for Leapmotor's vehicles. The decision was reportedly made primarily for cost-saving purposes.

The collaboration between Stellantis and Leapmotor has resulted in the formation of a joint venture, with the Franco-Italian automaker holding a majority stake of 51 per cent. This arrangement grants Stellantis exclusive rights to manufacture, export, and sell Leapmotor products outside of China, marking a first for a traditional Western automotive company.

This joint venture, operating under the name Leapmotor International, is a component of a broader partnership between the two companies. As part of this larger agreement, Stellantis is acquiring a 21 per cent stake in Leapmotor through a USD 1.6 billion investment.

According to Jefferies, the joint venture has plans to introduce a second Leapmotor model at Stellantis' Polish plant. The A12 SUV is scheduled to begin production in the first quarter of 2025. Leapmotor has initiated preparations for the localized production of components.

Leapmotor's management team, as reported by Jefferies, stated that the manufacturing costs at the Polish plant are approximately 400-500 euros ( USD 428.08- USD 535.10) per vehicle. This figure is comparable to the production costs at Leapmotor's facilities in China, and significantly lower than the estimated 1,000 euros per vehicle cost at plants in Italy.

For its C10 SUV model, Leapmotor intends to maintain production in China and export the vehicles to Europe in the initial stages. This strategy is based on the potential for higher pricing of this model in the European market, according to Jefferies' report.

It's worth noting that the European Commission recently announced the implementation of additional duties on imported Chinese electric vehicles, set to take effect in July. For Leapmotor specifically, these new tariffs will result in an additional 21 per cent duty on their imported vehicles.
