Hafiz Abdul Rahman Makki, the brother-in-law of Mumbai attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed and deputy chief of the banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), passed away in Lahore on Friday (December 27) following a heart attack, news agency PTI reported.
Makki, a key plotter behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks that killed 175 people and injured over 300 in 2008, was also the brother-in-law of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed. In January 2023, the United Nations designated him a global terrorist.

The JuD said that Makki had been unwell for several days and was receiving treatment for high diabetes at a private hospital in Lahore. A JuD official told PTI, "Makki suffered a cardiac arrest early this morning and he breathed his last in the hospital."
<h2>UN declared 'global terrorist'</h2>
Makki was arrested by Pakistani authorities in May 2019 and placed under house arrest in Lahore. In 2020, he was convicted by a Pakistani court on terror financing charges and sentenced to life imprisonment. Last year, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) declared him a "global terrorist".
In addition to the 26/11 attacks, Makki was wanted by Indian security forces for his involvement in the Red Fort attack of December 22, 2000, when six LeT terrorists charged into the fort and opened fire on security personnel stationed there.

Makki&rsquo;s speeches inciting violence against India led to his inclusion in the US Treasury Department&rsquo;s list of designated and sanctioned terrorists in November 2010. At the time, the department said, "Treasury also acted against Hafiz Abdul Rahman Makki, head of LeT&rsquo;s political affairs department, for acting for or on behalf of LET."

A Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist has disclosed to the National Investigation Agency the details of the operations undertaken by him from Pakistan.

The terrorist, Zaibullah, also revealed that he was given "motivating talk" by LeT founder Hafiz Saeed.

"We can take weapons including pistols, AK 47s, grenade launchers and other arms. At two separate occasions, Hafeez Saeed and Zakir Oman Naqvi gave us an motivating talk. We were also given two months training in the snow," the LeT terrorist said under NIA interrogation.

"I was posted in Indian border area but the Indian Army fired and we had to return. We also went to Chatabata post, planted put mines on army's supply route, blasted the mines in which 2 Indian army jawans were killed," he added.

Zaibullah was captured on April 6.

Was given motivating talk by Hafiz Saeed: LeT terrorist to NIA

Following the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/four-arrested-in-connection-with-srinagar-hospital-firing-32243">hospital attack </a>which led to the escape of a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) prisoner in Srinagar, seven terrorists have been relocated to other jails, sources in the ministry of home affairs said.

A senior home ministry official said that the state government has also issued instructions to immediately review the security of hardened terrorists who are lodged in Srinagar central jail. The terrorists are expected to be moved out to jails in Jammu, Uddhampur, and Leh and kept in isolation.

The central government has also asked the Jammu and Kashmir government to fully review security measures in place in jails and transportation of inmates.

The Union Home Ministry also asked the state government to ensure that no such incident takes place in future and deploy CRPF in prison security. The state government has been asked to involve CRPF in all aspects of central jail security -- not only perimeter security but also inside the prison.

&quot;The home ministry has taken serious note of the issue and has advised the state government to fully review security measures and take action to prevent such incidents in future,&quot; the home ministry official told PTI.

The measures come after the escape of Pakistani terrorist Naveed Jatt, who was lodged in Srinagar central jail.

He fled from a hospital in the city after he along with other terrorists accompanying him, shot and killed two policemen accompanying him.

The Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist was taken to the hospital for medical checkup.

The home ministry has asked the Jammu and Kashmir to examine why a high-security prisoner was sent to the OPD of a hospital.

It has also asked the state government to fix responsibility for lapses.

There were 16 Pakistani prisoners still in Srinagar jail, of whom seven are being shifted to Jammu and discussions are on where to shift the others.

Another official said that the Jammu and Kashmir government has assured the central government of taking necessary steps and reviewing the entire jail security.

The state government has transferred Director General of Prisons S K Mishra and appointed Dilbag Singh in his place.

The Srinagar jail superintendent has been suspended and a high-level enquiry by the divisional commissioner ordered, the official said.
