<p>UNESCO has described &#39;<em>Kumbha Mela</em>&#39; as India&#39;s &lsquo;Intangible Cultural Heritage&#39; on Friday.</p>

<p>The &#39;<em>mela</em>&#39; was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UN body. <em>Kumbha Mela</em> is one of the oldest and holiest congregations of pilgrims that takes places every 12 years and rotates between four holy&nbsp;sites of Hindu tradition - Allahabad, Ujjain, Nasik and Haridwar.</p>

<p>It was identified as one of the newest additions to the list this year among 33 others.</p>

<p>The list describes <em>Kumbh Mela</em> as &ldquo;the festival of the sacred Pitcher&rdquo; where pilgrims bathe or take a dip in a sacred river.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The decision was taken by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage meeting in Jeju, South Korea.</p>

<p>Other additions to the list include Bangladesh&rsquo;s traditional art of Shital Pati weaving, which basically refers to the art form of weaving strips of green cane into a handcrafted mat, usually used for prayer purposes.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister&nbsp;Yogi Adityanath and MP Chief Minister&nbsp;Shivraj Singh Chouhan were some of the leaders who expressed their happiness on the occasion.&nbsp;</p>
