The introduction of TVS-2M also enabled the increase of the continuous operation period of the reactor from 12 months to 18 months.

The newer fuel meant that the reactor could operate for six months longer than usual. Typically, after 12 months of operation, the reactor has to be shut down and its irradiated fuel has to be unloaded and the fresh fuel has to be loaded.

Now this process needs to be done only once in 18 months, thanks to the new type of fuel that is in use. Longer periods of continuous operation boosts the economic efficiency of the nuclear reactor, as it can produce more power during the year and faces less number of shutdowns overall.

KKNPP in Tamil Nadu involves the construction of six power units of VVER-1000 reactors with an installed capacity of 6000 MW. The first stage, consisting of power units No. 1 and No. 2, was commissioned in 2013 and 2017, respectively. Power units No. 3, 4 and No. 5, 6 are the second and third stages of the Kudankulam NPP. Currently, power units 3, 4, 5, and 6 are under construction. TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom (the fuel division of the state corporation Rosatom) includes enterprises for the manufacture of nuclear fuel, conversion and enrichment of uranium, production of gas centrifuges, as well as research and design organisations. Being the only exclusive supplier of nuclear fuel for Russian nuclear power plants, TVEL provides fuel to a total of more than 70 power reactors in 15 countries, and research reactors in nine countries across the world. Notably, every sixth power reactor in the world is powered by TVEL fuel. Rosatom’s fuel division is also the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium.

KKNPP comprises six units of Light Water Reactors (VVERs), each of 1000 MW capacity. Set up in technical cooperation with the Russian Federation, the reactors at Kudankulam are state-of-the-art in terms of safety. They incorporate a combination of advanced, multi-layered safety features ensuring the highest level of safety for the plant, the public and the environment.

Being implemented in three phases of 2x1000MW each, units 1 &amp; 2 are operational, whereas 3 &amp; 4 are about 50 per cent into construction. The construction of Units 5 &amp; 6 is expected to take up to seven years. The completion of all these projects over the coming years will provide 6000MW clean energy to the country.&nbsp;

WION has learnt that the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was also alerted at the same time (around September 4th) when the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant was informed about the possible malware/virus attack. Some of its computers (used only for internet surfing purposes) were also affected by the malware.&nbsp;

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant located in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district has been in the news after social media users claimed that some of the facility’s systems were hit by a computer virus/malware.&nbsp;

The first official statement in this regard came from the information officer of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project on October 29.&nbsp;

“Some false information is being propagated on the social media platform electronic and print media with reference to the cyber attack on Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. This is to clarify that Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) and other Indian nuclear power plants control systems are stand-alone and not connected to outside cyber network and internet,” &nbsp;the statement said.&nbsp;

Any cyber-attack on the Nuclear Power Plant Control System is not possible. At present, KKNPP Unit -1 and 2 are operating at 1000MWe and 600MWe respectively without any operational or safety concerns.&nbsp;

However, on the very next day (October 30) the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) issued a press release stating that the identification of malware in NPCIL system is correct.&nbsp;

“The matter was conveyed by CERT-In when it was noticed by them on September 4, 2019. The matter was immediately investigated by DAE specialists. The investigation revealed that the infected PC belonged to a user who was connected to the internet-connected network used for administrative purposes. This is isolated from the critical internal network. The networks are being continuously monitored. The investigation also confirms that the plant systems are not affected,” the release stated.

While there is no official statement from ISRO, WION has learnt that few ISRO computers that were connected to the internet (only for browsing purposes) while being completely isolated from the internal network were only affected. ISRO had taken appropriate action and has been monitoring regularly.&nbsp;

It is also understood that such malware attacks keep happening on all systems that are connected to the internet for web surfing and that cyber-security experts are constantly maintaining a vigil.&nbsp;
