Hikers found human remains Saturday in a Southern California mountain area where actor Julian Sands disappeared five months ago, authorities said.

The body discovered around 10 a.m. in the wilderness near Mount Baldy was transported to the coroner’s office for identification next week, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Additional details were not immediately available.

Sands, an avid hiker and mountaineer, was reported missing on January 13 after setting out on the peak that rises more than 10,000 feet (3,048 metres) east of Los Angeles. The region was pounded by severe storms during winter.

On Friday, his family released its first statement since Sands’ disappearance.

“We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer,” the statement said.

Sands, a 65-year-old British-born actor best known for his role in the 1985 film A Room With a View,&nbsp;is married to journalist Evgenia Citkowitz and has three adult children.

A June 17 search for Sands, the eighth organised search since his disappearance, was unsuccessful, authorities said.

It's been a month since actor Julian Sands was reported missing. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has now announced that its team is delaying the search to find the missing actor as a winter storm is approaching the area.&nbsp; 
 
"On Saturday, February 18, 2023, over 20 members of the Fontana Sheriff's Station and the West Valley Search and Rescue team conducted a ground search in the Mt. Baldy area," the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement to the media.&nbsp; 
 
"The crew members focused on the area where the California Highway Patrol's RECCO device hit on a possible electronic device on January 25th," the statement continued. "Unfortunately, nothing was found that would lead to the discovery of Mr Sands." 
 
Authorities are reportedly clear to "bring closure" in the case for the sake of the beloved British actor's family. 
 
"With the imminent storm approaching, ground searches for Mr Sands will be delayed for some time. Our goal is to bring closure to the family of Mr Sands and when we can, we will try this again." 
 
Mt Baldy, the area where Sands went missing about a month ago, is expected to get heavy snowfall in the coming days thus making search operations difficult.&nbsp;

Search party on Saturday had to call off their search due to avalanche risk and worsening weather conditions. 
"However, we did continue efforts by helicopter and by drone as the weather permitted," authorities confirmed to media outlets.&nbsp; 
 
"We will schedule another ground search when the weather improves and when it is safe for the conditions of our ground crew."&nbsp; 
 
The authorities though recommended other hikers from avoiding the area as even experienced hikers were "having a hard time."&nbsp;
