<p>A study has found that an asteroid 20 times larger than the one that wiped off dinosaurs from the face of Earth struck Jupiter's moon Ganymede some four billion years ago. The strike shifted the moon's axis.</p>

<p>Scientists have known for a long time that Ganymede was once hit by a massive asteroid that resulted in the formation of concentric circles around a specific point on its surface.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"These giant impacts are believed to have been frequent in the early solar system," planetologist Hirata Naoyuki from Kobe University told Newsweek.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added that the impact affected the interior structure of Ganymede "significantly". This is clear from the size of the transient crater as it makes up for 25 per cent of the size of Ganymede.</p>

<p>The study has been published in the journal Scientific Reports. Hirata studied the moon and realised that the site where the crater exists is almost exactly on the meridian opposite Jupiter. He concluded that the impact was so powerful that it shifted Ganymede's rotational axis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Something similar happened to Pluto following an asteroid impact, the New Horizons space probe had revealed.</p>

<p>Ganymede hosts subsurface oceans and has been a likely candidate in the hunt for livable space bodies. Probes to study the moon further are in the pipeline. In 2015, the Hubble Space Telescope found evidence that Ganymede hosts an underground saltwater ocean 60 miles deep, almost 10 times deeper than the oceans on our planet.</p>

The flyby required ultra-precise, real-time navigation, and has helped save around 150 kilogrammes of fuel. With this, JUICE can now get much closer to the Jovian moon Ganymede than planned.</p>

<p>European Space Agency’s (ESA) Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) probe will use double gravity assist, for the first time ever, from Earth and Moon to propel itself towards Jupiter. The gas giant-bound spacecraft was launched earlier this year, to study the planet as well as its three icy and potentially ocean-bearing moons – Ganymede, Callisto and Europa.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Setting the stage</strong></h2>

<p>Last week, the JUICE probe performed what the ESA described as its “largest and most important manoeuvres in its eight-year journey to Jupiter.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The manoeuvre was a 43-minute burn using its main engine and around 10 per cent of the probe’s entire fuel reserve to change its orbit around the Sun ahead of its flyby and set the stage for next summer’s Earth-Moon double gravity assist.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“This manoeuvre used up roughly 363 kilograms of fuel – or almost exactly 10% of the 3,650 kilograms of fuel that JUICE was launched with,” Julia Schwartz, Flight Dynamics Engineer at ESA’s ESOC mission control centre in Germany, said in a statement.</p>

<p>The move on November 17, marked the first of a two-part manoeuvre, which is a first-of-its-kind flyby where the probe will first pass by the Moon to gain momentum and make the flyby Earth a day and a half later.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“This first burn did 95% of the work, changing Juice’s velocity by almost 200 m/s,” Schwartz added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ESA scientist explained that given that JUICE is among the heaviest interplanetary spacecraft ever launched with a total weight of around 6000 kg, “it took a lot of force and a lot of fuel to achieve this.”</p>

<p>Gravity assist is a technique by which a spacecraft, with the help of the gravitational field of a planet, gets a speed boost.</p>

<p>However, it is tricky to do so, to execute a gravity assist, the spacecraft needs to pass through the planet’s gravitational field at a carefully calibrated exact point in order to get a “slingshot effect.”</p>

<p>This means that JUICE would have to arrive at the Earth-Moon system at precisely the correct time, and speed and be travelling in the correct direction.</p>

<h2><strong>What’s next?</strong></h2>

<p>While most of the work is done, the next step involves a second, much smaller manoeuvre which is necessary to put JUICE on the right trajectory for the Earth-Moon gravity assist. “Splitting the manoeuvre into two parts allows us to use the second firing of the engine to iron out any inaccuracies of the first,” the ESA engineer explained.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ESA successfully launched its JUICE spacecraft from its spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, on April 14.&nbsp;</p>

<p>JUICE aims to make detailed observations of the giant gas planet and its three large ocean-bearing moons and is equipped with remote sensing, geophysical and in situ instruments, but given the distance between the home planet and the gas giant, it won’t be able to do so before 2031.&nbsp;<br />

<p>The European Space Agency (ESA) reached the final stage of launching its much-awaited and ambitious mission to explore Jupiter and its three biggest moons.</p>

<p>The mission called “Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice)” will be launched on April 13 from Europe’s Spaceport located in Kourou, French Guiana.</p>

<p>The spacecraft will travel in space for eight years before reaching its destination in 2031 to study the gas giant along with its three large ocean-bearing moons – Callisto, Ganymede and Europa.</p>

<p>The spacecraft has been transferred by the engineers to its final assembly before the next week's launch and has been mounted on the Ariane 5 rocket which will carry it into space.</p>

<p>"This ambitious mission will characterise these moons with a powerful suite of remote sensing, geophysical, and in situ instruments to discover more about these compelling destinations as potential habitats for past or present life," said the European Space Agency, in a statement.</p>

<p>During its space mission, Juice will study Jupiter's radiation, plasma environment and magnetism in-depth and their interplay with the moons.</p>

<p>The spacecraft will carry mono-methyl hydrazine (MMH) fuel and nitrogen (MON) oxidizer's mixed oxides, which ignite when the two come in contact.</p>

<p>The propellant will be used by Juice to make critical course manoeuvres during its journey into the Jupiter system and to move into orbit around the planet to finally reach its largest moon, Ganymede.</p>

<p>The spacecraft, after reaching Jupiter, will conduct 35 flybys of the moons of the gas giant to explore the mission's principal objectives: Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.</p>

<p>ESA said that the mission will end after an extended study of Ganymede, making the spacecraft the first of its kind which orbited a moon other than Earth's in 2034.</p>

The movie is a subtle yet powerful take on the deeply ingrained and normalised patriarchy and sexism in Indian society that has found an easy way into our households, with both men and women being complicit in the discrimination against the fairer sex.<br />
&ldquo;Our female stars are experimenting a lot more than the male stars. You can clearly see the difference between what the top three female stars are doing, they are doing such different kind of roles, and male stars, who still have to cater to that massy tag of being a superstar. So, that&rsquo;s the difference that I have seen,&rdquo; said Neeraj Ghaywan, known for directing the 2015 acclaimed drama Masaan.<br />
Shefali Shah also spoke about the improved quality of roles written for female actors that go beyond the age-related stereotypes.<br />
&ldquo;There are fantastic roles being written. I have to admit that it is changing. There are roles for a Vidya Balan. There is a Lipstick Under My Burkha, a Pink&hellip; So, there are these films, which are women-oriented. When you see Lipstick Under My Burkha, they (the actresses in the film) are not exactly in their 20s,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<p>But the actor, known for her performances in films like Satya, Monsoon Wedding and more recently Dil Dhadakne Do, did add that largely, filmmakers and writers find it difficult to conceive roles for women that are middle-aged.<br />
When asked her opinion on the dearth of roles for female actors after marriage or motherhood, Shefali Shah said, &ldquo;It is not just after they get married, but even after a certain age, they don&rsquo;t know what to do with actresses. So, either you are an 18 or a 22-year-old heroine or cut to you are a mother of a 30-year-old. They don&rsquo;t know what to do with actors in between that, which is very sad. I don&rsquo;t think it has to do anything with marriage or role-playing as such, I think it is a much bigger and wider discrepancy, which is sad.&rdquo;<br />
