Netanyahu’s contentious judicial overhaul plan was paused back in March after which he&nbsp; agreed to negotiate with the opposition lawmakers after weeks of mass protests and international criticism as many called the proposed reforms a threat to democracy.&nbsp;

The opposition leaders had reportedly threatened to withdraw from negotiations with Netanyahu if their candidate, Karine Elharrar, was not named to the committee for the selection of judges which includes two politicians, three judges and two lawyers.&nbsp;

The panel not only appoints judges but also approves the makeup of the Supreme Court which has been central to the judicial reform battle. The committee typically comprises lawmakers from both the coalition as well as the opposition but parts of the overhaul had demanded that the ruling coalition, in this case, Netanyahu’s Likud party, control&nbsp;both positions.&nbsp;

<h2>Netanyahu’s failed bid to delay vote</h2>

Since the opposition would not back down on its demands, Netanyahu reportedly asked his allies to oppose all candidates, including its own members and aimed to delay the ballot which would also push all the appointments until the next vote which is a month from now.

However, after the ballots, which were cast anonymously, were counted it turned out that several coalition members voted in favour of the opposition’s pick for the committee Elharrar of the Yesh Atid party whose appointment to the nine-member panel is now secure with a 58-56 vote.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Tally Gotliv of the Likud party&nbsp;managed to garner 15 votes and did not clear the threshold. This has now paved the way for another vote for the second seat within 30 days, said the Knesset speaker Amir Ohana.&nbsp;

The vote also exposed some divisions within the ruling coalition which has raised questions about Netanyahu’s control over his political allies. Meanwhile, the opposition leaders have said that this vote does not change the fact that there is still no committee and the talks would be off the table till the panel is complete.&nbsp;

“The committee has not been established and the threat to our democracy has not been removed,” said Yair Lapid, the leader of opposition party&nbsp;Yesh Atid. He added, “No committee, no talks.” Lapid also called the vote “good news” since a member from the opposition would remain on the judicial selection committee.&nbsp;

Netanyahu, in a video statement after the vote, said that the opposition was to be blamed for the talks not moving forward even after getting what they wanted. “(National Unity party leader Benny) Gantz and Lapid don’t want real negotiations,” said the Israeli PM, adding that “I promise the citizens of Israel, unlike them, we will act responsibly for our country.”&nbsp;

The company anticipated that an additional 30,000 people would come in Haifa, 18,000 in Kfar Saba, and 16,000 in Netanya. Numerous other cities across the nation also hosted rallies. Nationally, 430,000 participants were listed by the organisers.

The protests on Saturday&nbsp;entered the 17th week and saw both government supporters and opponents.&nbsp;

In their largest rally to date, supporters of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's hard-right government crammed the streets around the Knesset in Jerusalem on Thursday.

We will not let extremists from either side take control of the country,” Gants added in a speech during which members of the crowd shouted “no to talks.”

As the country continues to flare up over the government's controversial plan to tighten control over the Supreme Court which has been paused amid the escalating tension with the Palestinians, the poll carried out by Channel 13 News showed that more than two-thirds of the country's voters were unhappy with Netanyahu’s performance in office.

The poll indicated that Netanyahu’s Likud party would be able to clinch victory over 20 seats in the 120-member parliament of the country, which is a fall from the 32 seats he won last November.

The poll also stated that his religious-nationalist coalition would not be able to get a majority with 46 seats, which is a fall from 64.

If the elections are held in the current scenario, Benny Gantz's Blue and White party would emerge victorious with 29 seats, followed by Yair Lapid’s centrist party which would clinch victory over 21 seats, as per the survey conducted by Camil Fuchs.

When the people were asked about the performance of Netanyahu as prime minister, 71 per cent of the 699 respondents called it “not good” and 20 per cent agreed that it was “good”, reported Channel 13 News.

The survey was dismissed by the Likud party’s Boaz Bismuth.

“There was an amazing and very, very reliable poll on November 1, I still rely on it,” he said while speaking to Army Radio on Monday, as he referred to the last national election held which ended the political deadlock which was seen five elections in less than four years.

The government led by Netanyahu had pledged to overhaul the judicial system, however, the legislation was paused to allow for compromise discussions with the opposition political parties after weeks of nationwide protests.

Protesters are now demanding that instead of suspending the legislation—which the experts believe will weaken the judiciary and see political interference in judges' appointment—the coalition government revoke the bill completely.

According to local media, at least 170,000 to 200,000 people demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Saturday, while tens of thousands more rallied in numerous cities across the country. Protest organisers even claimed that close to 400,000 people participated in the agitation.

Carrying Israeli flags, people marched through the centre of Israel’s commercial hub, chanting “democracy” and carrying placards condemning Netanyahu’s government.

Netanyahu on Monday suspended the passage of the legislation through parliament following a massive&nbsp;strike that was triggered by his announcement that he was firing Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for supporting the protesters' demands.

After weeks of massive protests against Israel’s judicial overhaul plans, the contentious legislation is now agreed upon to be put on hold until the next session of the Knesset, media reports said Monday evening.&nbsp;

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a state televised address made the announcement for the same.&nbsp;"Out of a sense of national responsibility, out of a will to prevent a rupture among our people, I have decided to pause the second and third readings of the bill," he said.&nbsp;

Following this, Israel's top trade union chief Arnon Bar-David called off strikes.&nbsp;"Following the prime minister's announcement I declare the end of the strike," Bar-David, chairman of the Histadrut trade union confederation, said in a statement.

“I agreed to remove the veto to reject the legislation in exchange for a commitment by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the legislation would be submitted to the Knesset for approval in the next session,” Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said in a statement, as per reports.&nbsp;

This comes after Israel fired Yoav Gallant, the defence minister, for refusing to side with the government's plans to overhaul the judicial system. That had sparked further demonstrations in the country which has been witnessing incessant protests for weeks on now.&nbsp;

While confirming the hold on the legislation, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s Jewish Power Party said in a statement that it will now be taken up after the Passover recess in April.&nbsp;Gvir said that the judicial reform legislation will still be put to a vote during the summer session of parliament.&nbsp;

He added that he had "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's commitment that the legislation will be brought to the Knesset for approval in the next session if no agreements are reached during the recess.”&nbsp;

Compared to the initial text, the new version of the contentious reform reportedly puts more lawmakers and members of the judiciary in the judicial appointments panel.

It would need to pass a vote of parliament's law committee before a second and third, final reading by the full chamber.

Defending the new version, the right-wing Likud party said that it "won't enable the coalition or opposition to take over the court, but ensures diversity in the selection of justices".

As per a US White House statement, President Joe Biden on a call with Netanyahu has voiced support for the "compromise." He also stressed the importance of "genuine checks and balances."&nbsp;

After 11 weeks of protests, Israel modifies key judicial reform

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday (March 19) asked the country's military’s chief of staff Lt. Gen. Herzl Halevi on Sunday (March 19) to contain a wave of protest from within the ranks over the government's plan to overhaul the judiciary. “I expect from the military chief of staff and the heads of the branches of the security services to aggressively combat the refusal to serve. There’s no place for refusal to serve in the public discourse," Netanyahu said, the news agency Associated Press reported.&nbsp;

“A state that wishes to exist can’t tolerate such phenomena and we will not tolerate it as well,” he added. The military did not immediately comment on the prime minister's remarks.&nbsp;

A group of Israelis describing themselves as reservists in elite military and intelligence units said they would not turn up for some duties from Sunday.

In a letter circulated to local media, 450 protesters describing themselves as volunteer reservists from military special forces and another 200 as volunteer reservist offensive cyber operators, including from the Mossad and Shin Bet intelligence agencies, said they were now refusing call-ups, the news agency Reuters reported.&nbsp;

"We have no contract with a dictator. We would be happy to volunteer when the democracy is safeguarded," the letter read.&nbsp;

Speaking to Kan radio a man describing himself as a military intelligence captain taking part in Sunday's reservist protest, said that he and other signatories were deemed volunteers in part because their time commitments exceeded normal quotas for reservists.

"We are not calling for refusing orders. We call for a halt to the volunteering," he said, adding the protest would be suspended in the event of a compulsory wartime call-up, Reuters reported.

Earlier Lt. Gen. Herzl Halevi reportedly warned Prime Minister Netanyahu that the reservists’ protest risks harming the military’s capabilities.&nbsp;

For the last two months, Israelis have been protesting against the government's planned judicial overhaul. The government has said the overhaul is meant to correct the imbalance that has given the courts too much power and prevented lawmakers from carrying out the voting public’s will.

On Sunday, Netanyahu said the legal changes would be carried out responsibly while protecting the basic rights of all citizens.&nbsp;

Benny Davidson, who was 13 years old when he and the other passengers on board were taken hostage in the 1976 hijack, stated at the protest site on Wednesday that “there needs to be more than those fighters in Entebbe; we need tens, hundreds, or millions to make it clear that civil war is out of the question," reported Israeli newspaper.&nbsp;

An old black Mercedes led the convoy. It was a reference to the then-Ugandan dictator Idi Amin’s official car, a replica of which the Israeli commandos used to reach the hijacked plane.

Operation Entebbe was initiated after German and Palestinian hijackers took control of an Air France jet from Tel Aviv for Paris. The hijackers diverted the plane to Entebbe, the main airport of Uganda.

They&nbsp;presented their demands to Israel for&nbsp;the release of a sizable number of Palestinian detainees in exchange for the release of the 247 hostages.&nbsp;

The operation resulted in the deaths of four civilians and one Israeli soldier, including Yoni Netanyahu, Benjamin Netanyahu's brother.&nbsp;On Thursday, there will be another day of nationwide protests against the government's judicial coup, called "The day of escalating resistance."

Thousands of women, dressed in red, formed human chains on Wednesday to protest against the planned judicial overhaul of the right-wing Israeli government that would strictly limit the powers of the judiciary.&nbsp;

Several sectyions of Israeli society have joined the weekly protests against the plans of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to limit the ability of Supreme Court to rule against the executive and the legislature, while giving decisive powers to lawmakers in appointment of judges.&nbsp;

Marking the International Women's Day, the women joined the protests at the popular Tel Aviv beach-front promenade, while clapping and chanting "democracy".&nbsp;

&nbsp;"It's supposed to be a happy day that we celebrate our rights but now we need to protest again," said Moran Katzenstein at a demonstration in Jerusalem. "We all wear red and we show that we are drawing a red line and we will not allow this government to harm our rights,” she added.&nbsp;

The protesters waved signs reading "harming women's rights, not on our shift" and "women's struggle," as they demonstrated against the legislation, which was proposed by Netanyahu with his religious allies and right-wing groups last month.&nbsp;

On Monday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said that a compromise in the judicial overhual plan of the government could be imminent, however, opposition leader Benny Gantz said that no negotiations will take place till the legislation is halted.

"Agreements can be reached, compromise on democracy we cannot reach," Gantz stated. Women dressed in red stood in a line at the famous Tel Aviv beach-front promenade, while they clapped and chanted "democracy."&nbsp;

"We feel that every step of this reform is going to hurt women and take women's rights back," Adi Agasi-Shafir said. "We are going to be deprived of all the rights and achievements that we managed to get so far, it's really dangerous and we're not willing to accept that," Agasi-Shafir added.&nbsp;

Thousands of women, dressed in red, formed human chains on Wednesday to protest against the planned judicial overhaul of the right-wing Israeli government that would strictly limit the powers of the judiciary. Several sectyions of Israeli society have joined the weekly protests against the plans of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to limit the ability of Supreme Court to rule against the executive and the legislature, while giving decisive powers to lawmakers in appointment of judges. "It's supposed to be a happy day that we celebrate our rights but now we need to protest again," said Moran Katzenstein at a demonstration in Jerusalem. "We all wear red and we show that we are drawing a red line and we will not allow this government to harm our rights,” she added. The protesters waved signs reading "harming women's rights, not on our shift" and "women's struggle," as they demonstrated against the legislation, which was proposed by Netanyahu with his religious allies and right-wing groups last month. On Monday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said that a compromise in the judicial overhual plan of the government could be imminent, however, opposition leader Benny Gantz said that no negotiations will take place till the legislation is halted. Women dressed in red stood in a line at the famous Tel Aviv beach-front promenade, while they clapped and chanted "democracy." "We feel that every step of this reform is going to hurt women and take women's rights back," Adi Agasi-Shafir said. "We are going to be deprived of all the rights and achievements that we managed to get so far, it's really dangerous and we're not willing to accept that," Agasi-Shafir added.
