United States on Friday (Feb 2) killed at least 18 pro-Iran fighters in eastern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor released a statement saying.

"At least 18 pro-Iran fighters have been killed" in air strikes on Syria's east, five of them in Deir Ezzor, the monitor said.

This comes as US launched retaliatory air strikes against Iran's Revolutionary Guards and Tehran-affiliated groups in Iraq and Syria after a fatal attack in Jordan claimed the lives of three US troops and wounded nearly 40 others.

The US military released a statement saying that the air offensive struck targets including command and control centers, rockets, missiles and drone storage facilities, as well as logistics and munition supply chain facilities.

According to the military, the strikes hit more than 85 targets with more than 125 munitions.

They targeted the Quds Force, which is the foreign espionage and paramilitary arm of the IRGC that greatly exerts influence on its allied militia across the Middle East, from Lebanon to Iraq and Yemen to Syria.&nbsp;

Syrian state media also reported that an "American aggression" on sites in its desert areas and at the Syrian-Iraqi border on Friday led to multiple casualties and injuries.

<h2>'US strikes to continue', says Biden</h2>

US President Joe Biden on Friday said that the retaliatory strikes will "continue."

"Our response began today. It will continue at times and places of our choosing," Biden said in a statement. "The United States does not seek conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world. But let all those who might seek to do us harm know this: If you harm an American, we will respond."&nbsp;

On Sunday (Jan 28), a drone strike targeting a base in Jordan claimed the lives of three US troops.&nbsp;

After the attack, Biden condemned the Iran-backed militant groups and vowed to hold the perpetrators to account.

"While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq," Biden said in a statement on the attack.

"We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism. And have no doubt -- we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing," he added.

The US president then called the three fallen service members “patriots,” praising their bravery and offering his grief, calling it a “despicable and wholly unjust attack.”&nbsp;

“Together, we will keep the sacred obligation we bear to their families. We will strive to be worthy of their honour and valour. We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism,” the president said.

Hackers have used the notorious Pegasus spyware to break into the phones of dozens of journalists and activists in Jordan over the past four years, according to the findings of an investigation released Thursday.

The Access Now NGO highlighted 35 cases of hacking that date back to 2019, with targets that also include lawyers and at least one politician.

The report did not accuse Jordan's government of deploying the spyware but said its use came as the authorities "dialled up their repression of citizens' rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly".&nbsp;

The malware, which can seize control of a phone's microphone and camera and access documents, hit global headlines when a leak in 2021 showed how governments used it to spy on critics.

Despite the scandal, the Israeli firm behind Pegasus, NSO Group, and similar companies continue to sell their products to governments around the world.

The United States is one of the few countries to act against the industry, blacklisting companies including NSO, which limits the ability of Americans to do business with them.

But Access Now's regional policy director Marwa Fatafta said there was generally no oversight of companies offering such spying software, allowing the surveillance sector to continue its "secretive and shady" manner of business.

But a separate 2022 report from two other NGOs, Citizen Lab and Front Line Defenders, identified "two Pegasus operators that we believe are likely agencies of the Jordanian government".&nbsp;

The United States failed to stop a deadly attack on an American military outpost in Jordan when the enemy drone approached its target at the same time a US drone was also returning to base, US officials said Monday.

The US’ response to the drone attack in Jordan that killed and wounded US service members on Sunday is likely to be more powerful than previous American retaliatory strikes in Iraq and Syria, though the Pentagon and White House are being careful not to telegraph the administration’s plans. Now, the biggest challenge for the Biden administration is how to respond to the drone strike. When it's a known secret that Iran has backed these militias attacking U.S. bases, why won't U.S. attack Iran?

US bases attacked in Jordan: Officials say drone 'mix-up' led to the attack

The US Department of Defense on Monday (Jan 29) identified three US soldiers who were killed in a deadly drone strike on a US military outpost in Jordan. The three fallen soldiers—William Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia; Specialist Kennedy Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia; and Specialist Breonna Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia—were assigned to the 718th Engineer Company, a US Army Reserve unit based out of Fort Moore, Georgia.

Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said Monday at least 40 more people were injured in the attack, a number which is&nbsp;likely to increase as some others are showing symptoms of traumatic brain injury. Of those, at least eight were taken to the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center.

William Rivers was enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2011 as an Interior Electrician or 12R. Following the completion of his advanced individual training, Rivers was first assigned to the 990th Engineer Company at Fort McGuire-Dix in New Jersey.

In 2018, he also completed a nine-month rotation to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker in a statement expressed grief over the killing, saying, “His death is a profound loss to his family, friends, colleagues, and our entire country, and a reminder of the heavy debt we owe to our military families for their sacrifice.”

Jordan will meet Tajikistan in the Asian Cup quarter-finals after scoring twice in three minutes deep in stoppage time to stun Iraq 3-2 in a thriller on Monday. Jordan had a man advantage after the 77th-minute dismissal of Aymen Hussein but looked down and out in injury time, only for Yazan Al-Arab to prod in a 95th-minute leveller.

If that was hard to believe, better was to come two minutes later for Jordan when Nizar Al-Rashdan curled in from well outside the box to fire the underdogs into the last eight and spark wild celebrations. Iraq's heartbroken players were left flat-out on the turf, their dreams of repeating the country's fairytale 2007 Asian Cup title snatched from their grasp.

Jordan's coach Hussein Ammouta agreed with his opposite number that the harsh dismissal of Hussein for a second yellow card, for over-celebrating what he thought was Iraq's winner, changed the game. "The second half belonged to them, they scored two goals and then had to continue with 10 players," said the Moroccan.

Jordan, who held South Korea 2-2 in the group phase, next face a Tajikistan side who are one of the surprise packages of the competition on their Asian Cup debut. In Monday's other last-16 game, hosts and holders Qatar face Palestine.

<h2>- 'Turning point' -</h2>

Jordan are ranked 24 places lower than Iraq but they were the better side in the first half in front of a 36,000 crowd at a raucous&nbsp;Khalifa International Stadium. After going close on at least two occasions, Jordan deservedly took the lead in the first minute of injury time.

The Iraq defence sloppily presented Yazan Al-Naimat with the ball and he raced towards goal before chipping over a flailing and overworked goalkeeper Jalal Hassan.&nbsp;Iraq, who defeated pre-tournament favourites Japan 2-1 in the group stage, went on the attack after the break. The pressure paid off in the 68th minute when defender Saad Natiq nodded down and in from a corner for the equaliser.

Jordan went right up the other end and flashed an effort across goal, before unmarked striker Hussein controlled the ball in the box and lashed in to make it &nbsp;2-1 in the 76th minute.&nbsp; It was his sixth goal of the tournament but he was promptly given a second yellow card, having sat on the ground and mimicked what appeared to be eating.

Then came Jordan's quickfire double at the death to leave Iraq reeling. "Of course the sending-off was the turning point," said Iraq's Spanish coach Jesus Casas. "I don't understand how a referee can send a player off for celebrating. "When this happened we had to make changes and this complicated our task."

After going close on at least two occasions, Jordan deservedly took the lead in the first minute of injury time. The Iraq defence sloppily presented Yazan Al-Naimat with the ball and he raced towards goal before chipping over a flailing and overworked goalkeeper Jalal Hassan. Iraq, who defeated pre-tournament favourites Japan 2-1 in the group stage, went on the attack after the break. The pressure paid off in the 68th minute when defender Saad Natiq nodded down and in from a corner for the equaliser. Jordan went right up the other end and flashed an effort across goal, before unmarked striker Hussein controlled the ball in the box and lashed in to make it 2-1 in the 76th minute. It was his sixth goal of the tournament but he was promptly given a second yellow card, having sat on the ground and mimicked what appeared to be eating.

Biden vows response after three US troops killed in Jordan drone strike linked to Iran

A drone strike targeting a base in Jordan on Sunday (Jan 28) claimed the lives of three US troops.&nbsp;

After the attack, United States President Joe Biden condemned the Iran-backed militant groups and vowed to hold the perpetrators to account.

The US president then called the three fallen service members “patriots,” praising their bravery and offering his grief, calling it a “despicable and wholly unjust attack.”&nbsp;

“Together, we will keep the sacred obligation we bear to their families. We will strive to be worthy of their honour and valour. We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism,” the president said.

The US Central Command said that the 25 people were injured from the attack near the Syrian border further adding that the identities of the ones killed will be withheld pending notification of their families. &nbsp;

<h2>Deadly attack on US troops occurred in Syria, claims Jordan</h2>

Meanwhile, Jordan released a statement saying that the strike took place at an army base in Syria near the border and not in its territory as was reported by the United States earlier.

Government spokesman Muhannad Mubaidin said the "attack that targeted the American forces did not happen in Jordan... It targeted Al-Tanf base in Syria", where US forces are deployed as part of an international anti-jihadist coalition.

<h2>Hamas spokesman says drone strike 'a warning to American admin'</h2>

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri released a statement saying that the killing of the soldiers "is a message to the American administration that unless the killing of innocent people in Gaza stops, it may be faced with the entire (Muslim) nation."

"The continuation of the American-Zionist aggression on Gaza risks a regional explosion," Abu Zuhri said in a statement.

This is the first time that American troops have been killed in the Middle East since the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas broke out.

The attack is being seen as a significant escalation of the already precarious situation in the Middle East. There have been more than 150 attacks on US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, but most were unsuccessful as they did not cause serious injury or damage to infrastructure. &nbsp;

<h2>‘Strikes against Houthis to continue,’ says Biden</h2>

Earlier, Biden had said that the military strikes against the Houthis would continue as he said that the rebel group was still attacking vessels in the Red Sea.

"When you say 'working, are they stopping the Houthi?' No. Are they going to continue? Yes," Biden told reporters at the White House when asked if the strikes were working.

Washington re-designated the Houthis as a "terrorist group" on Jan 17 and hit 14 Houthi missiles later the same day. &nbsp;

A newly-opened restaurant in Jordan invited severe criticism from Israel over its name 'October 7' which Tel Aviv said was done deliberately in a show of support for the Palestinian group Hamas' deadly assault.

The video of the shawarma joint, situated in the Southern Mazar district of the country, took the internet by storm and triggered severe backlash for glorifying the Hamas attacks.

<h2>'Political pressure'</h2>

However, Israel's Ynet News quoted a social media post by the owner of the restaurant where he claimed that he had to forcibly take down the name of his food outlet due to "political pressure".

He further added that the government authorities had threatened to withhold his business license stating that it was against the law to give a restaurant a name with political connotations. &nbsp;

“The date October 7 is an honourable date and will remain engraved in our hearts forever. I wasn’t looking for fame, trends or marketing. I am proud of myself and proud that I shook the fragile entity [Israel] by using the name of a shawarma restaurant and struck terror in their hearts for at least two days,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

<h2>Disgraceful glorification of October 7 has to stop, says Israel’s opposition party chief</h2>

After the video of the restaurant went viral, the chief of Israel’s opposition party, Yair Lapid, released a statement saying that the name 'October 7' showcased "incitement and hatred against Israel," further urging the Jordanian government to take stern action.

"The disgraceful glorification of October 7th has to stop. The incitement and hatred against Israel breeds the terrorism and extremism which led to the brutal massacre of October 7th," Lapid wrote on X.
