Former Vice President Joe Biden has formally clinched the Democratic presidential nomination on Friday, setting the stage for a challenge to President Donald Trump in the November election.

The Associated Press and CBS News both projected that Biden passed the 1,991 delegates he needs to be chosen as nominee at the party's national convention, with contests still to come in eight states and three US territories.

Biden won the delegates after seven states and the District of Columbia held presidential primaries on Tuesday.

"It was an honor to compete alongside one of the most talented groups of candidates the Democratic party has ever fielded — and I am proud to say that we are going into this general election a united party," Biden said in a statement.

"I am going to spend every day between now and November 3rd fighting to earn the votes of Americans all across this great country so that, together, we can win the battle for the soul of this nation, and make sure that as we rebuild our economy, everyone comes along," he said.

Joe Biden formally clinches US Democratic nomination

Google said state-based hackers have targetted the campaigns of both United States President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, adding it saw no evidence that the attempts were successful.

The director of its Threat Analysis Group, Shane Huntley, disclosed the attempts on Thursday on Twitter.

It's been reported that a Chinese group known as Hurricane Panda targetted Trump campaign staffers while an Iranian outfit known as Charming Kitten had attempted to breach accounts of Biden campaign workers.

Such attempts involve forged emails with links designed to harvest passwords or infect devices with malware.

The effort targeted personal email accounts of staffers in both campaigns, according to the company statement.

A Google spokesman added that "the timeline is recent and that a couple of people were targetted on both campaigns. We sent targetted users our standard government-backed attack warning and referred the incidents to federal law enforcement."

Neither the Biden nor the Trump campaign would not say how many staffers were targetted, when the attempts took place or whether the phishing was successful.

Iranian attempts to break into Trump campaign officials’ emails have been documented before. Last year, Microsoft Corp announced that a group often nicknamed Charming Kitten had tried to break into email accounts belonging to an unnamed US presidential campaign, which sources identified as Trump’s.

Earlier this year, the threat intelligence company Area 1 Security said Russian hackers had targeted companies tied to a Ukrainian gas firm where Biden’s son once served on the board.

Google declined to offer details beyond Huntley’s tweets, but the unusually public attribution is a sign of how sensitive Americans have become to digital espionage efforts aimed at political campaigns.

In addition, Charming Kitten, also known as Newscaster and APT35, is reported to have targetted US and Middle Eastern government officials and businesses, also for information theft and spying.

In October, 2019, Microsoft said hackers linked to Iran's government had targetted a US presidential campaign and the New York Times and Reuters identified the target as Trump's re-election campaign.

Biden rebukes Trump's photo op in front of riot-damaged church

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Tuesday called his Republican rival Donald Trump an "absolute fool" for not wearing a mask at a series of recent public events.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Tuesday called his Republican rival Donald Trump an "absolute fool" for not wearing a mask at a series of recent public events. Biden said Trump's lack of leadership on the issue is "costing peoples' lives." Biden's decision to wear a mask outdoors on Memorial Day at his first public event since March caught the attention of Trump, who retweeted an image of Biden at the event accompanied by a comment: "This might help explain why Trump doesn't like to wear a mask in public." The president has resisted wearing masks in front of cameras at series of public events, including on Memorial Day. "He’s a fool, an absolute fool to talk that way. Every leading doc in the world says you should be wearing a mask in a crowd," Biden said in a taped interview with CNN. Biden called Trump's behaviour "macho stuff" and falsely masculine actions that were costing people's lives. The president said on Tuesday he thought it was "very unusual" that Biden wore the mask on Memorial Day since he was outside in good weather. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where social distancing measures are hard to maintain. The guidelines do not suggest wearing masks at home. McEnany said Biden's choice to wear a mask did not strike Trump as "a very data-driven decision." (With inputs from Reuters)

African American voters 'ain't black' if they vote for Trump: Biden

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Wednesday that the leaked recordings of phone calls allegedly between Joe Biden and former president Petro Poroshenko would be investigated by the country’s law enforcement agencies.

The recordings, containing what appear to be heavily edited conversations between Biden and Poroshenko while in office, were published by a Ukrainian associate of Rudy Giuliani, attorney of US President Donald Trump, in an apparent attempt to embarrass the politicians and dent Biden’s presidential run against Trump in the 2020 Presidential elections.

Andrii Derkach, the Giuliani ally, claimed to have received the tapes from investigative journalists. Opponents have pointed at the lawmaker’s ties to Russia. Derkach is a former MP for the pro-Russian Party of Regions faction and attended a KGB-run high school in Moscow. His father was a former KGB officer and then headed Ukraine’s intelligence service.

In the edited conversations, Biden apparently ties the delivery of $1bn in aid to Ukraine to Poroshenko firing Viktor Shokin, a former general prosecutor widely considered to be corrupt. In another, the two discuss the potential appointment of his successor, Yuri Lutsenko.

The tapes contain few revelations and their provenance remains murky. Still, Trump allies have sought to leverage them to revive scrutiny, as well as conspiracy theories, about Biden’s ties to Ukraine ahead of the 2020 elections.

Zelenskiy's statement that their contents might be ''perceived, qualified as treason'' prompted an angry rebuttal from Poroshenko, who said that the Zelenskiy administration may have played a role in their release and should be investigated.

US President Donald Trump recently toured a mask distribution center in Pennsylvania. The masks were the reason the US president visited the site with most White House staff around him were wearing masks but Donald Trump chose to do without it.

Trump even decided to let go of safety goggles and when he was questioned about how murderous the virus is and why he decided to not wear a mask, the US president said: "I have never lost anybody to the flu, nobody ever said they had died."

The point of wearing a mask is not just to simply to protect yourself, the point of having the president wear one is to encourage the nation to do the same. Donald Trump missed out the little detail perhaps he had the approval ratings on his mind.

Trump's optimism may be tilting the battleground in his favour but his ratings on the coronavirus response are sagging rapidly.

Joe Biden has held consistent leads in most national and swing-state polls. America's faith in Trump's handling of the coronavirus has steadily sunk.

According to a poll conducted by SSRS, an independent research company, at least 54 per cent Americans continue to say that the US government is doing a poor job of preventing the virus from spreading.

56 per cent respondents say that the US government is not doing enough to address the growing death toll with 57 per cent Americans admitting limited availability of testing and 58 per cent Americans fear a potential second wave of cases this year.

However, facts don't work much in an election season, scandals and conspiracy theories do and Donald Trump seems to have found another, he has unleashed a tweet storm with a new and unfamiliar hashtag "Obamagate".

At least 126 tweets have been put out by the US president with the hashtag.

'Never happened': Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden denies sexual assault accusations

US House Of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has endorsed Joe Biden for president, joining a list of top Democrats, who have recently thrown their support behind the former vice president.

US House Of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has endorsed Joe Biden for president, joining a list of top Democrats, who have recently thrown their support behind the former vice president. Pelosi's endorsement of the Democratic presidential candidate follows that of US Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, former president Barack Obama and former vice president Al Gore, who all threw their weight behind Biden earlier this month. In a video statement released on Monday, Pelosi cited Biden's experience in government, including his role in passing the Affordable Care Act, as an evidence of his leadership qualities. She said Biden is well-positioned to lead the country amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. "As we face coronavirus, Joe has been a voice of reason and resilience, with a clear path to lead us out of this crisis," Pelosi said in her endorsement. The endorsement comes at an opportune time for Biden, who has struggled to maintain a high profile during the COVID-19 pandemic and sustain the momentum he had built up in his lightning-quick run toward becoming the Democratic nominee. Besides current and past Democratic leaders, Biden has also won endorsements from some other key stakeholders like Washington state Governor Jay Inslee, a prominent climate change campaigner, and the 400,000-member United Auto Workers union. The endorsements have given Biden a series of headlines at a time when his campaign is effectively on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak - and when US President Donald Trump has captured media attention with his combative White House briefings. The Democrats are eager to project unity heading into the presidential race against Trump for the Nov. 3 general election. In recent weeks, the more moderate Biden has made attempts to win the support of the liberal backers of Sanders and Warren.

Indian-American lawyer Seema Nanda on Saturday announced her decision to step down as the CEO of the Democratic National Committee, the top administrative position in the main Opposition party, ahead of the presidential elections in November, reported news agency PTI. Nanda, 48, became the first Indian-American to be appointed as the CEO of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in June, 2018. She did not give any reason for leaving the top position, the report added. The Washington Post reported that Nanda's sudden exit from the DNC was part of the effort of the former US Vice President Joe Biden who is the presumptive presidential nominee of the Democratic Party. She would be replaced by Mary Beth Cahill, who had previously managed John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign. "After two years, I will be stepping down as CEO of the DNC. I couldn't be prouder of the infrastructure we have built, the primary process we have run, and the team we have built," Nanda announced in a tweet on Friday. "I look forward to continuing the fight for our democracy and to elect Democrats everywhere," she said. With the two key endorsements, decks are now clear for a direct contest between Biden and incumbent President Donald Trump, who is seeking re-election. Former US President Barack Obama on Tuesday endorsed Joe Biden's presidential campaign, saying his longtime vice president can unify and "heal" a nation struggling through some of its darkest moments. The formal backing by perhaps the most popular politician in America is the latest shot in the arm for Biden's surging candidacy, and a further sign that Democratic leaders are rallying around the party flagbearer ahead of November's election. "Joe has the character and the experience to guide us through one of our darkest times and heal us through a long recovery," Obama said in a 12-minute video filmed at his home in Washington and released online. "I believe Joe has all the qualities we need in a President right now," Obama said, calling his choice of Biden as running mate in 2008 "one of the best decisions I ever made." The 77-year-old former vice president and Democratic stalwart is the party's presumptive nominee to challenge Donald Trump, after his lone remaining rival Bernie Sanders dropped out of the race last week. US election 2020: Bernie Sanders endorses ex-rival Biden for president

With Bernie Sanders out of the race, Democrat Joe Biden will go head-to-head with Donald Trump in the upcoming American presidential election. China is more than ecstatic with this turn of events. There is a reason why: The former Vice President of the USA Joe Biden’s support of the People’s Republic of China has not only been longstanding, but also runs disturbingly deep.

In the 2000s, Biden was the one who marshalled China’s World Trade Organisation Membership. This helped China’s geopolitical rise greatly. China was also granted the Permanent Normal Trade Relations status which pushed for closer ties and increased trade. Joe Biden’s part in this? He was a senior member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee which played a role in granting this status to China. And when he was America’s vice president, Biden claimed that China was a ‘new partner’ that would give healthy competition to the United States of America and also help meet global challenges. What did this stance do? Millions of American jobs disappeared and the USA faced stark unemployment figures during the Obama administration. In the meantime, China was militarising the South China Sea.

Also during the time, Biden was in power, his family personally benefitted from China ties. In 2013, son Hunter Biden joined the board of a fund worth $20 billion. It was not just any fund. This fund carried powerful Chinese state-owned entities as shareholders. Hunter invested his own money in the fund in 2017. It is unknown how much he made from the deal. In 2019, under media scrutiny, Hunter claimed that he had resigned from the firm. However, Chinese public records still show him as an officer.

To be fair to Hunter Biden, many American influencers struck deals with China. But because his father was in office, it exposed American’s working against their own national interest and instead abetting China’s industry and economy. While millions of Americans were struggling with increased unemployment, China, the Biden family and Wall Street were the only ones who benefitted.

Under the Obama administration, Vice President Joe Biden consistently either appeased or failed to counter Chinese aggression on multiple issues. Cybersecurity was one of them. Asian countries, especially India faced routine Chinese bullying. The USA did not help India in the matter. Also under VP Biden’s tenure, China shipped the largest amount of fentanyl in the form of a synthetic opioid to the United States. Official data from 2015 shows that opioids were the cause of over 33,000 deaths. Numbers kept rising and the opioid crisis hit America hard.

With Bernie Sanders gone, China could not be happier that Biden is the Democratic front runner. This was evident from the start through objective facts. A little after Biden first announced his campaign in April 2019, China suddenly toughened up on trade negotiations with POTUS Trump. In May 2019, Beijing reversed almost all parts of the draft trade pact being created between the USA and China. When it looked like Biden was falling behind the other Democratic hopefuls, China curiously became much easier to deal with. In June 2019, China’s Xi Jinping and President Trump decided to revive trade talks.

The relationship between the USA and China is a competitive one. Both are permanent members of the United Nations and pull significant weight on the international stage. Therefore, electing an American president who appeases China will do nothing but push China’s nationalist agenda in the coming years. The impact of this? India will no longer be as strong of a defence partner and also may even play a smaller role in trade with the USA. This could throw major blows to the Indian economy and negatively affect our foreign relations.

Furthermore, China’s bioterrorism with COVID-19 has woken the planet up to the fatal havoc that is caused if it's not curbed. Thousands have lost their lives in the COVID-19 crisis and well over 140 countries are fighting the coronavirus pandemic. For these reasons, it is absolutely crucial to elect a POTUS who stands up to China as opposed to conciliating it. If elected, Joe Biden will create an open path for China to push a very dangerous agenda. Prior to the upcoming Presidential elections, it is the need of the hour that Americans and the rest of the world become woke to this truth.

After the polls closed, reports said that the results were not set to be out just yet due to the large numbers of mail ballots.

US Democratic presidential polls held in Wisconsin despite coronavirus crisis

The Democratic Party on Thursday postponed its US presidential nominating convention by a month until August, citing the coronavirus health crisis that has upended daily life and caused many states to postpone their primaries.

Democrats will use the convention in Milwaukee - now scheduled for the week of August 17 - to formally pick their nominee to challenge Republican President Donald Trump in the November election. It had previously been scheduled for July.

The pandemic already has forced Democratic front-runner Joe Biden and rival Bernie Sanders off the campaign trail, and more than a dozen states have delayed their nominating contests due to worries about public health risks.

"In our current climate of uncertainty, we believe the smartest approach is to take additional time to monitor how this situation unfolds," said Joe Solmonese, chief executive of the Democratic National Convention Committee.

The convention will be held in Wisconsin, a state that Trump narrowly won in 2016 and which is seen as a key battleground state for the 2020 presidential contest.

Biden on Wednesday called for delaying the convention, speaking in a television interview from what he called a "makeshift studio" in the recreation room of his Wilmington, Delaware, home.

Biden, who was vice president under President Barack Obama, currently leads the Democratic nominating contest against Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont.

White House medical experts have forecast that even if Americans hunker down in their homes to slow the spread of COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus, some 100,000 to 240,000 people could die from the disease.

Already, some 5,340 Americans have died and over 225,510 cases have been confirmed, according to a Reuters tally.

The Republican Party had already planned to hold their nominating convention in August, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Republican National Committee spokesman Rick Gorka said the party was making sure state party organizations had the resources needed for their nomination contests, which are seen as a formality given widespread support in the party for Trump.

"We are fully committed to holding the Republican convention in Charlotte as planned and re-nominating President Trump,” Gorka said.

Democrats delay presidential convention until August, citing coronavirus

A poll undertaken by The Washington Post in collaboration with ABC claims that Donald Trump is almost at a “near tie” situation against his Democrat contender in the upcoming US presidential elections, Joe Biden.

The poll, which was released yesterday, put Biden ahead by 49 per cent while Trump’s vote share jumped to 47 per cent from 40 per cent in February.

The COVID-19 pandemic has killed over 1000 people in the United States. Trump has continuously put the economy before the pandemic, for which many people have blamed him.

On the other hand, people favoured Biden for his policies on healthcare.

“[The poll] tests only national sentiment, which would translate into the popular vote, not the state-by-state competition for an electoral college majority”, The Washington Post declared.

As was witnessed in 2016, Hillary Clinton had an edge of over three million votes against Trump, but owing to his victory in the electoral college, he was able to become the president.

According to critics, Biden has not shown interest in curbing coronavirus.

The politician has responded to accusations.

“I’m chomping at the bit,” Biden told reporters on video call. “I wish I were still in the Senate, you know, being able to impact on some things. But I am where I am”, he added, reflecting on his inability to help.

However, many users on Twitter felt that it was the responsibility of not Biden, but of Trump to respond to the pandemic, especially now considering that the US has registered more cases than any country in the world, even surpassing China and Italy.

The US is now being referred to as the third epicentre of the contagion.

“Almost nothing about what Joe Biden is doing for the next few weeks is gonna matter much for November. And almost everything about what Donald Trump is doing is going to matter a lot”, tweeted Nate Silver, a polling professional.

Earlier, Donald Trump had suggested quarantining New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. However, after NYC’s governor said that any such order would be akin to a “federal declaration of war”, Trump was forced to back off.

The primary fight within the Democratic party is about Biden and Bernie Sanders.

Another poll by the Washington Post and ABC predicted an edge of 55 per cent for Biden against Sanders.

However, owing to the pandemic, the election process has been halted. The number of cases continue to rise in the US, with Trump making a bizarre statement today on how 100,000 deaths would mean the situation was “under control”.

Are Trump and Biden heading for a 'near-tie' situation in presidential polls?

Joe Biden cemented his status as the likely Democratic presidential nominee on Tuesday after defeating Bernie Sanders, 78, in Florida and Illinois on a coronavirus-hit primary night.

Biden has now crossed the halfway point in terms of earning a majority of delegates needed to become the nominee, post the string of victories in high-profile contests and his show of strength on Tuesday.

Sanders delivered a 20-minute speech online on Tuesday focusing on addressing the coronavirus crisis, including injecting $2 trillion in funding to prevent deaths and "avoid an economic catastrophe."

On Tuesday Biden's delegate count stood at 1,121 compared to Sanders's 839.
