The undertaking that the students have to sign reads - "Having been admitted to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College I will never enter inside college premises wearing torn/artificially torn jeans or any kind of indecent dresses. I do hereby affirm that I shall wear normal civil dresses during my study period inside the entire college premises.”

The prohibition on students and staff wearing indecent clothes, like torn jeans is not new. A notice issued last year read, "No student or staff can enter inside college premises wearing torn jeans or artificially torn jeans. It is strictly prohibited inside the college campuses."

The principal of AJC Bose College told Indian Express,&nbsp;"Last year, we issued a similar advisory for our students. But despite such notice, some students were seen coming to the college in torn jeans. We don’t want our students to come to the campus in such attire." The head added that&nbsp;the college would not allow entry to any student found wearing indecent clothes.

Following this notice, students at the colleges demonstrated against the authorities and said they wouldn't&nbsp;follow the rules.

Since students didn't follow the previously issued advisory, the college this year is aiming to&nbsp;make a strong impact, which is why&nbsp;new students will have to sign the undertaking to get into the college.

Students are free to wear any type of outfit outside the college premises but they will have to follow the rules when in college. The principal also claimed that the undertaking would enforce strict discipline in the college.

A third-year student of the college told The Times Of India, "The college teaches us about freedom of expression but takes steps that curb personal choice. If education is properly imparted, students are responsible enough to judge what to wear and what not to at an institute."

The notification has different opinions as another student of the college did not find the rule problematic because several other colleges have the rule of following a dress code.

The jeans, which are loosely related to Levi Strauss according to some experts, were found from a sunken trunk in a shipwreck dating back to around 1857. While the jeans predated the first produced Levi Strauss product by 16 years, Reuters reported that it has shown materials and craftsmanship similar to the company and was one of the 270 artifacts which were put on auction.&nbsp;

“Those miner’s jeans are like the first flag on the moon, a historic moment in history,” said Dwight Manley, managing partner of the California Gold Marketing Group, which owns the artifacts.&nbsp;

While the speculations remain over its supposed connection to the San Francisco-based jeans company Levi Strauss, there were no doubts over the fact that they actually date back to 1857. According to the current owners, the jeans belonged to passengers who were travelling to New York in the ship called SS Central America but near the coast of South Carolina, it was severely damaged in a hurricane.&nbsp;

One of the other valuable objects retrieved from the shipwreck was the key to the treasure room which held tons of gold coins and it was sold for over $103,200. An 1849 Colt pocket pistol was sold for $30,000 while a gold coin dating back to 1856 was bought in the auction for $43,200.&nbsp;

A pair of jeans from the 1880s, which was excavated from a mineshaft a few years ago, was sold for $76,000 at an auction in northern New Mexico, making it one of the costliest pairs ever sold.&nbsp;

The buyer, a 23-year-old man, had to pay $87,400 for the Levi Strauss jeans after factoring in the buyer’s premium.&nbsp;

“I’m still kind of bewildered, just surprised in myself for even purchasing them,” Kyle Haupert, a clothing dealer from San Diego,&nbsp;told The Wall Street Journal, after the auction was closed.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Haupert bought the vintage jeans with Zip Stevenson, owner of Los Angeles-based vintage clothing company Denim Doctors.&nbsp; &nbsp;

While Haupert contributed 90 per cent of the winning bid, the remaining 10 will be put up by Stevenson.&nbsp;

Haupert said he relied on Stevenson’s expertise, saying, “He’s seen everything under the sun. I trust him to confirm that they are an authentic pair from the 1880s.”&nbsp;

Both are now planning to sell the jeans, with offers not anything less than $150,000.&nbsp;

The jeans were first discovered several years ago by Michael Harris, a self-described denim archaeologist, in an abandoned mineshaft in the American West.&nbsp;

Even though the pants are two centuries old, they appeared intact, barring a few holes and splitters. They come with a tagline “Made by White labor” on the back pocket, reflecting America’s complicated history. &nbsp;

It is said that Levis added the phrase on its products after the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was passed, barring all Chinese labourers to the US for 10 years, even though they were very much part of the American economy.&nbsp;

According to the company’s statement, they adopted this strategy to improve sales. But a few years later they scrapped it.&nbsp;

“We thought it would improve sales and align with the views of consumers at the time."&nbsp;

"This continued into the 1890s when we reversed our policy," company officials said.&nbsp;
