Italy’s constitutional court has ruled that the practice of children taking only the father’s surname is ‘discriminatory and harmful to their identity’ and it further instructed that Italian children will be given the surname of both parents with the decision to change it lying with the family in the future.

In a statement released by the court, it said that the goal of this ruling is to provide both parents with equal power in the decision and this will be the norm unless there is a prior request.

The ruling will still have to be approved by the Italian government but family minister, Elena Bonetti, has said that the government will be supporting the parliament in implementing this change.

“We need to give substance [to the decision] ... and it is a high priority and urgent task of politics to do so,” Bonetti wrote in a post on Facebook. She added that the decision is a welcome one and insisted that both mother and father should share the responsibilities when it comes to their child.

There was also a lot of support from other members of the Italian parliament as president of the South Tyrolean People’s Party (SVP) Renate Gebhard said that is time for the matter to be accepted in the parliament.

"This issue has been dragging on from one parliamentary term to the next, it is time to decide," he said according to a Reuters report.

The report further said that Laura Boldrini, an MP for the Democratic party, also welcomed the ruling and said - "It is now up to Parliament to make this leap forward in terms of civilisation. Parents have equal responsibility and equal rights, no more discrimination that penalises mothers and children."

An Italian couple has won a two-decade long legal battle in which they used a post-World War II international treaty to show the allowed volume of a toilet flush.

The experience began as a regular neighbourhood feud, but it lasted over two decades before reaching Italy's Supreme Court last week, according to Rome daily La Repubblica.

It all started in 2003, when four brothers in the La Spezia district of northwest Italy constructed a new toilet in their apartment.

The next-door couple quickly complained that the toilet was flushed regularly during the night, and that the flush was so loud that it woke them up each time.&nbsp;

The couple took their matter to court, demanding that the noise problem be resolved and that damages be paid, but the trial judge dismissed their case.

The couple opted to take their case to Genoa's appeals court, which resulted in an investigation of the two flats that was eventually favourable to them.

Investigators observed "a large excess of three decibels over the threshold required by statute," according to the report.

In other words, that flush was just too loud.

But, in the end, the top court decided in favour of the couple, citing the flush's negative impact on their quality of life as an infringement of a constitutionally given right to "respect one's own private and family life," as protected by Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

And finally, the destiny of the four brothers was sealed after 19 years of warfare, and the flush conflict was put to rest for good.

The deal was cancelled in 2014 after Orsi was arrested on suspicion of paying bribes to secure the deal.

AgustaWestland opposed India&#39;s decision to cancel the order and the contract is currently suspended and the subject of international arbitration in Paris.

The case against Finmeccanica itself was dropped by prosecutors back in 2014 while AgustaWestland agreed on a &euro;7.5 million settlement with the court the same year.
