The Israeli military expanded evacuation orders in the Gaza Strip's Khan Younis late Saturday (Aug 10), forcing tens of thousands of Palestinian residents and displaced families to leave as explosions from tank shelling reverberated around them.

The Israeli military expanded evacuation orders in the Gaza Strip's Khan Younis late Saturday (Aug 10), forcing tens of thousands of Palestinian residents and displaced families to leave as explosions from tank shelling reverberated around them. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the military said it was attacking Hamas militants who were using those areas to stage attacks and fire rockets. Reuters reported that in Khan Yunis, the evacuation order covered districts in the centre, east and west, making it one of the largest such orders in the 10-month-old war. "For your own safety, you must evacuate immediately to the newly created humanitarian zone. The area you are in is considered a dangerous combat zone," the military said in a post on X. Israeli strike on Gaza school kills nearly 100 The Israeli military's announcement came hours after an Israeli strike on the Al-Tabin school complex compound housing displaced Palestinian families killed around 100 people, the Gaza Civil Emergency Service said. Empty food tins lay in a puddle of blood and burned mattresses and a child's doll lay in the debris, Reuters reported. The Israeli strike drew international condemnation from Arab states, Turkey, France, Britain and the European Union (EU) and an expression of deep concern from the United States (US). The Israeli military said that the death toll from the strike was inflated and 19 militants were among the dead. "The strike was carried out using three precise munitions, which can not cause the amount of damage that is being reported," it said in a statement. Since the Gaza war began in October last year, tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians have sought shelter in Gaza's schools, most of which have been closed once the fighting started. According to Palestinian officials, around 350 families had been sheltering at the Al-Tabin school complex compound. New ceasefire talks on August 15 Egypt, the United States and Qatar have scheduled a new round of ceasefire negotiations for Thursday (Aug 15), as fears grow of a broader conflict involving Iran and Hezbollah following the assassination of a top Hezbollah commander. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has said he will not end the war until Hamas no longer poses a threat to Israelis, said he would send a delegation. (With inputs from agencies)

Morning news brief: Taiwan detects 22 Chinese aircraft; Iran's Guards aim to hit Israel; and more

A confrontation between Iran's newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian and some hardliners within the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has cast uncertainty over Iran's response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The Iranian government is at odds over how to retaliate against Israel following the killing of Haniyeh, according to The Telegraph.

The IRGC is reportedly pushing for a direct and severe missile strike on Tel Aviv and other major Israeli cities. However, President Pezeshkian, who assumed office just days before the assassination, is pushing back against this aggressive strategy.

Pezeshkian, known for his comparatively moderate stance and his electoral victory over a candidate backed by the IRGC, is advocating for a more calculated response.

The newly elected president is urging for strikes on alleged Mossad bases located outside Israel, particularly in neighbouring regions such as the Republic of Azerbaijan and Iraqi Kurdistan.

He argues that this approach would minimize the risk of a full-scale war with Israel, a conflict he believes could have severe consequences for Iran.

A close aide to President Pezeshkian told The Telegraph, "Pezeshkian fears that any direct attack on Israel would have serious consequences."

The aide reportedly further said that Pezeshkian has suggested notifying Azerbaijan and Iraqi Kurdistan before any strikes on alleged Israeli bases within their borders.

The IRGC, which has historically enjoyed significant autonomy and influence within the Iranian government, is reportedly undermining Pezeshkian's efforts to avoid a major confrontation with Israel.

An official from the IRGC told The Telegraph that the organisation is mainly dismissive of the president's more restrained approach. "The number one consideration is still striking Tel Aviv with Hezbollah and others at the same time," the official said as quoted by The Telegraph.

Pezeshkian faces a rising conflict in asserting his authority over the IRGC, which remains loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Another aide close to the president informs The Telegraph, The IRGC's push for a more aggressive response is seen as being "more about undermining his week-long presidency than addressing the humiliation they have suffered" from the assassination.
