Iran on Wednesday (Apr 24) rejected Argentina's request to arrest Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi over his alleged involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people and injured over 300 others. Argentina had sought Vahidi's arrest in recent weeks and it escalated efforts to condemn Iran and its overseas militant network for the alleged involvement in the bombing, a report by the news agency Associated Press said. Without mentioning Vahidi's name, Iran's foreign ministry on Wednesday warned Argentina against making baseless accusations against citizens of other countries. However, earlier this month, Argentina's highest criminal court ruled that Iran plotted the bombing. Judges had singled out three former Iranian officials for their involvement in the Jewish community centre attack, including Vahidi who at the time led the Revolutionary Guard’s expeditionary Quds Force. Legislation pushing Joe Biden to increase sanctions on Iranian crude oil is on track to become law as early as this week. But analysts don’t expect the president to fully use his new powers any time soon. The measure was passed by the US House of Representatives over the weekend as a response to Iran’s attack on Israel earlier this month.

The United States has issued a stern warning to Pakistan. It has threatened to impose sanctions if the country does business with Iran. This comes as Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi wraps up his 3-day visit to Pakistan. Why is the US angry?

Gravitas: US threatens Pakistan with sanctions over trade with Iran

Iran and Pakistan released a joint statement on Wednesday (Apr 24) urging the United Nations Security Council to take stern action against Israel stating that the country had targeted neighbouring countries and foreign diplomatic facilities "illegally".

The development came following Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's three-day visit to Pakistan amid an escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

"Recognising that the irresponsible act of the Israeli regime forces was a major escalation in an already volatile region, both sides called on the UN Security Council to prevent the Israeli regime from its adventurism in the region and its illegal acts attacking its neighbours...," Iran and Pakistan said in their joint statement released by Pakistan's foreign ministry.

Last week, explosions were reported in Iran's Isfahan, what Tehran said was an Israeli attack.

However, Iran said that it has no plans to retaliate against Israel.

The visit by Raisi was aimed at mending ties between neighbouring countries Iran and Pakistan where the Iranian President vowed to give a push to the trade between both countries by $10 billion a year.

"Both sides agreed to increase the volume of bilateral trade to 10 billion U.S. dollars in the next five years," Sharif's office said in a statement after a joint news briefing.

"They also agreed to cooperate in developing joint approaches to confront common challenges including the threat of terrorism," the statement said.

Legislation aimed at intensifying sanctions on Iranian crude oil is expected to become law, putting US President Joe Biden in a delicate position while attempting to balance geopolitical concerns and domestic economic interests.

According to Bloomberg, the measure, passed by the US House of Representatives in response to Iran's recent attack on Israel, proposes broader restrictions on Iran's oil exports, encompassing foreign ports, vessels, and refineries involved in the trade.

Despite the legislative push, analysts anticipate Biden will exercise caution, leveraging waiver authority to avoid major disruptions to global oil supplies and mitigate potential price hikes.

Drawing parallels with the administration's approach to Russian sanctions amid the Ukraine conflict, experts speculate that Biden's strategy will prioritise avoiding increases in crude prices or gasoline costs for American consumers.

While the legislation indicates a tougher stance on Iran, Biden is expected to opt for waivers to maintain stability in oil markets.

The president's handling of Venezuelan oil sanctions, renewed last week, highlights a similar reluctance to disrupt global oil flows.

Oil market observers remain relatively hopeful, anticipating minimal immediate impact on oil markets as the Biden administration assesses the implications of the sanctions legislation.

Brent crude prices, which reached nearly $92 a barrel in April, indicate ongoing market sensitivity to supply constraints.

ClearView Energy Partners estimates that if fully enforced, the new sanctions could possibly inflate global prices by as much as $8.40 per barrel, posing challenges for Biden amid concerns over rising fuel costs.

The proposed sanctions, included in a broader foreign aid package, aim to curtail China's reliance on Iranian oil, which accounts for approximately 80 per cent of Iran's total exports.
