The conservative speaker of Iran's parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, on Monday registered his candidacy for the snap presidential election on June 28.

The election was originally to be held in 2025 but was brought forward following the unexpected death of ultraconservative president Ebrahim Raisi on May 19.

Raisi and seven members of his entourage, including foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, were killed when their helicopter crashed on a fog-shrouded mountainside in northern Iran.

Like all the other hopefuls, Ghalibaf now has to wait until June 11 to see if his candidacy is approved by the Guardian Council, a conservative-dominated, 12-strong body of jurists, either appointed or approved by the supreme leader, which vets all candidates for public office.

This is Ghalibaf's fourth run at the presidency, following bids in 2005, 2013 and 2017. On his last attempt, Ghalibaf withdrew in favour of Raisi, who finished second to the moderate incumbent Hassan Rouhani.

"If I don't run for election, the work that we have started in the last few years to solve the economic problem of the people... will not be completed," he said after submitting his registration.

He added that if he did not believe that Iran's economic and social problems could be solved he "would never have entered the field of competition".

Ghalibaf, 62, is a former commander of the air force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the ideological arm of Iran's military.

The conservative politician was elected the speaker of the new Iranian parliament on 28 of May. He also held the post in the previous legislature.

An Iran-Iraq war veteran, Ghalibaf was mayor of Tehran from 2005 to 2017 and before that was chief of the Iranian police forces.

Candidate registration opened on Thursday and closes on Monday.

Other prominent figures including former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, moderate ex-parliament speaker Ali Larijani and ultraconservative former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili have also registered their bids.

Iran’s former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to run in upcoming presidential election

Iran will start registration of candidates for an early election on Thursday, following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. Watch in for more details!

Early Presidential Elections in Iran: Candidates begin registration process on Thursday

Former Iranian parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani, a prominent conservative, was among candidates registering on Friday for an early election next month following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, state media reported.

Larijani, an adviser and ally of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, told reporters that he would focus on fixing the economic problems facing Iranians and "resolving (U.S.) sanctions", while maintaining a strong defence.

Larijani was barred from standing in the 2021 presidential race by the clerical-led Guardian Council which vets candidates. But an Iranian insider told Reuters that Larijani decided to run after he was assured by top officials that he would not be disqualified by the hardline council. No reason was given for the change.

Abdolnaser Hemmati, a former central bank governor, was among other hopefuls who registered on Friday. Hemmati, a low-key moderate, also ran in the 2021 presidential election.

Iran on Thursday started the registration of candidates for the June 28 election.

Once seen as a possible successor to Khamenei, Iran's ultimate decision-maker, Raisi's sudden death has triggered a race among hardliners to influence the selection of the country's next leader.

After a five-day registration period, the Guardian Council will vet candidates running for the presidency. Moderate politicians have accused the 12-member body of disqualifying rivals to hardline candidates, who are expected to dominate the race.

Turnout may be hit by restricted choice on the ballot and rising discontent over an array of political, social and economic crises.

Within Iran's complex mix of clerical rulers and elected officials, Khamenei has the final say on all state matters such as nuclear and foreign policies. But the elected president will be in charge of tackling worsening economic hardship.

Saeed Jalili, a former chief nuclear negotiator who two decades ago ran Khamenei's office for four years, was the first heavyweight hardliner to register for the election on Thursday.

Jalili had made an unsuccessful bid in 2013 for the presidency and withdrew from the 2021 race to support Raisi.

Parviz Fattah, a former Revolutionary Guards member who heads an investment fund linked to the leader, could also register as a candidate.

Interim President Mohammad Mokhber has also been mentioned in Iranian media as a possible candidate.

Several low-key moderate politicians are also likely to enter the race.

Iran Elections: Who will replace Iran's Raisi?

The second preliminary report into the crash that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has found no evidence of sabotage.

The report released on Wednesday (May 29) by the Iranian General Staff examined the remains and parts of Raisi's helicopter and found no signs of electronic warfare intervention or sabotage, reported Türkiye's state run-news agency, Anadolu.

"The occurrence of an explosion as a result of an act of sabotage during the flight and moments before the helicopter crashed into the mountain is ruled out," it said, adding "no signs of an act of electronic warfare were detected on the helicopter."

Sabotage

The second report by Iranian General Staff has concluded that there was "no malfunction" in the communication system until 69 seconds before the accident.

It emphasised that no emergency had been reported during communication with the crew, which had been maintained on the specified frequencies.

The report also looked into the helicopter's maintenance and repair records and found no issue that could have played a role in the accident.

Furthermore, the number of passengers onboard the aircraft was also found to be "consistent with the weight standards" typically observed for such flights.

While the report notes that the weather conditions were suitable when the helicopter took off, the effect of the weather conditions on the return route — in line with the documents obtained and the statements of the pilots and passengers of the other two helicopters — should be investigated in more detail, it adds.

The Iranian General Staff has assured the public that the investigations will continue until the actual cause of the accident is found.

Iran is ready to hold its Presidential elections. As many as 20 credible names have been proposed for running in elections. All candidates have to be cleared by the 12-strong elite body known as the Guardian Council.

Iran Presidential Elections: Up to 20 possible contenders gear up to become Iran's next president

The death of Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi has set the cat among pigeons in Iranian politics, with at least 20 names emerging to fill the void. The battle of succession will start once the Iranian Guardian Council clears the names of the candidates. The council consists of 12 elite members, closely linked to the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It remains to be seen whether the council sticks to its hardline approach or makes way for a more democratic election by allowing an open competition.

As the battle goes on, the Iranian establishment will try its best not to expose internal political fault lines as Khamenei searches for a candidate that could bring predictability and stability to the turmoil-hit nation.

Big names in the fray

One of the biggest names in the fray is Saeed Jalili, who announced on Sunday that he would be participating in the presidential contest. He is believed to be a master in Iranian foreign policy, having played key roles in foreign ministry and nuclear negotiations between 2007 and 2013.

The Mayor of Tehran, Alireza Zakani, is also understood to have prepared a campaign team but he has not made his decision yet.

The traditional conservative candidates are seen as either Parviz Fattah, the former head of the Mostazafan Foundation, a massive business conglomerate, or Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the parliament speaker between 2020 and 2024.

Registration for candidates starts Thursday

Registration for the candidates for the presidential elections will begin next Thursday and last for four days. Historically, up to 10 candidates could throw their hats into the ring for the initial round, though in 2021, only four did so.

There are also rumours among some Iranian media outlets that if the race ends in chaos and unpredictability, the vice president and current interim president, Muhammad Mokhber, may be asked to take on the role for five years. Despite concerns about corruption and his administration's rollout of less effective COVID-19 vaccines, Mokhber's extensive experience, particularly in managing the supreme leader's affairs, positions him as a trusted figure.
