Facing a sharp fuel price surge triggered by the Iran conflict, South Africa has cut its fuel levy by 3 rand for April to ease pressure on consumers. The move offers temporary relief, but prices are still expected to rise significantly. Officials say the government may extend support if the crisis continues, as households and businesses brace for higher transport and living costs.

Iran says the unthinkable has happened. IRGC claims that the USS Gerald R. Ford, the crown jewel of American naval power, was forced to retreat. The war in West Asia has entered a critical phase as the US and Israel push to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities. But eliminating Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile may require a high-risk ground operation which is one of the most dangerous missions ever attempted. With Iran’s mountains, deserts, and strategic islands acting as natural defenses, any such move could turn into a prolonged and deadly conflict. Is this a mission possible or a disaster waiting to happen?

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, Joint Chiefs Chairman, declared at a news conference on Tuesday "the upcoming days will be decisive" in the war with Iran.

The United States and Israel have launched fresh waves of strikes on Iranian targets as the conflict intensifies. Recent operations have targeted Iran’s naval assets, military infrastructure and air capabilities.

Reports indicate multiple Iranian naval vessels have been destroyed in coordinated operations, with US and Israeli forces also striking key military sites linked to Iran’s defence network.

The escalation follows weeks of sustained attacks since February 28, when both countries launched a major offensive against Iran’s military, nuclear and strategic infrastructure.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that communication with Iran is ongoing, primarily through intermediaries, with some level of direct contact also taking place.

Rubio outlined Washington’s war objectives, including degrading Iran’s military capabilities, particularly its missile, naval and air power, while avoiding a ground invasion.

He also issued a strong warning on the Strait of Hormuz, saying the key global shipping route will reopen “one way or another,” either through Iranian compliance or coordinated international action.

The statement comes amid continued disruption in the strait and rising global concern over energy supplies, with the waterway remaining central to the ongoing conflict.

US-Iran War: What Does US, Israel Want From Iran War?

US-Iran War | Report: Trump Open To Ending War Without Reopening Strait of Hormuz

Iran struck and set ablaze a fully loaded Kuwaiti crude tanker near Dubai on Monday (Mar 30) in what may be one of the most serious maritime attacks since the US-Israel war against Iran began on February 28. The vessel, the Al-Salmi, transiting the waters under a Kuwait flag, was hit while anchored in Dubai's port area. The attack may have resulted in an "oil spill in the surrounding waters," warned Kuwait Petroleum Corp (KPC) in a statement. Here's all we know.
Iran attacks fully loaded oil tanker near Dubai
According to reports, the vessel, the Al-Salmi, flagged by Kuwait, was hit while anchored in Dubai's port area. The strike damaged the hull and ignited a fire onboard. Dubai authorities later confirmed the fire had been extinguished, but Kuwait Petroleum Corp flagged the possibility of an oil spill in surrounding waters, warning that emergency and firefighting teams had been scrambled to contain the situation."Emergency response and firefighting teams were immediately mobilised and are currently working to contain and control the situation in close coordination with the relevant authorities," said KPC, warning of an "oil spill in the surrounding waters". Videos from the scene show the oil tanker engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke billowing high into the sky.

This was not an isolated incident. Since late February, a string of merchant vessels have come under attack by missiles and explosive drones, both aerial and maritime, across the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Monday's strike, however, felt different in scale. Al-Salmi was fully laden, and hitting it this close to Dubai, a major commercial and logistical hub, marks a geographic escalation.
Where was Kuwaiti tanker Al-Salmi headed?
According to Reuters, Al-Salmi crossed the Strait of Hormuz in late February, around the time the first strikes on Iran took place. It later called at Saudi Arabia's Khafji port and Kuwait's Mina Al Ahmadi terminal before heading east to the UAE, fully loaded and reportedly bound for China's Qingdao — at times flagging Chinese cargo. The attack happened the same day Trump issued his most explicit threat yet against Iranian infrastructure, warning he would "completely obliterate" Iran's electrical plants, oil wells, Kharg Island, and possibly desalination facilities if a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz isn't reached soon. Global oil prices have already been climbing steadily since the conflict began, and news of Monday's tanker strike pushed markets further.Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. ‘War crime’: Did US target an Iranian plane headed to India on humanitarian mission? — what we know

Massive explosions rocked the city of Isfahan in Iran in the early hours of Tuesday, according to media reports. Donald Trump shared a video showing a series of blasts triggering fires, turning the sky orange. The US President did not mention where the video was from, but reports suggest that the US and Israel jointly struck a major ammunition depot in Isfahan. It is home to 2.3 million and is where the Badr military airbase is located. The clip shared by Trump remains unverified. The Wall Street Journal quoted a US official as saying that forces hit the ammunition depot in Isfahan with 2,000-pound bunker buster bombs. "A high volume of bunker busters, or penetrator munitions, was used for the strike," the official said. The primary attack is said to have triggered multiple secondary explosions that were so powerful that fireballs soared into the sky and the ground shook.

Reports are doing the rounds that Iran may have moved around 540kg of highly enriched uranium stockpiles to an underground facility in Isfahan. WSJ earlier reported that Trump is considering a military operation to extract the uranium from Iran, according to US officials. It would mean the conflict will escalate as the mission would likely mean having American forces inside the country for several days or weeks. There have been reports of the US moving ahead with a ground invasion of the country. Trump has also threatened to "take the oil in Iran". He also warned that the US will destroy Iranian energy sites if a deal is not reached soon to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Both the US and Israel have justified military action in Iran, claiming that it was close to building a nuclear bomb, a claim not backed by the UN nuclear watchdog. Also Read: Trump willing to end Iran war without reopening Strait of Hormuz: New report makes EXPLOSIVE claims https://www.wionews.com/videos/iran-strikes-israel-iranian-missiles-strike-israel-s-oil-hub-explosions-shake-haifa-oil-refinery-1774925961205/embed
Iran hits Israel and Kuwait
Meanwhile, Iran and its proxy forces, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen, have also been launching missiles and drones at Israel and Persian Gulf states. "The Kuwaiti giant crude oil tanker was subjected to a direct and malicious Iranian attack while in the anchorage area of Dubai Port in the UAE," official news agency KUNA reported. Kuwait's military confirmed on social media that its air defences were responding to "hostile missile and drone attacks."

Explosions were reported in the city of Isfahan in Iran at dawn on Tuesday, triggered by US-Israeli strikes. Reports suggest that the main strike was so powerful that it triggered secondary explosions which sent shockwaves and fireballs.
