In the city that never sleeps, a chef who started cooking insects four years back for an art project now wants to change people's perspective about insects and make them a "nutrient-dense" and "delicious" part of everyone's diet.

New York City-based chef Joseph Yoon and his&nbsp;organisation, Brooklyn Bugs, want to alter people's perception of insects from "creepy crawlies" to "sustainable" dietary options.

The chef, who is now on a mission to showcase the diverse flavours, textures, and nutritional benefits that over 2,100 types of edible insects worldwide can offer, told Daily Sun that he "absolutely love(s) insects."

To normalise the consumption of insects, Yoon encourages integrating them into familiar dishes.&nbsp;

"When people ask me how they should integrate crickets or insects into their food, one of the favourite ways I like to do it is simply in my favourite foods, says the chef.

"You don’t have to think about making a new dish with a new ingredient, but if you like to make fried rice like I do, I love making fried rice with crickets. I love adding crickets to my mac and cheese. You can add the cricket powder to the cheese sauce," he adds.

A man was "eaten alive by insects and bed bugs" in an Atlanta detention cell, according to his family's attorney.&nbsp;Lashawn Thompson was determined to be suffering from a mental illness, thus he was detained for&nbsp;misdemeanour and put in the psychiatric wing of the Fulton County Jail.

Michael D. Harper, the family's attorney, released photos showing&nbsp;Thompson's body covered with insects after his death.

He told reporters that a lawsuit is ongoing and is pushing for a criminal inquiry, reported the BBC.&nbsp;

"Mr Thompson was found dead in a filthy jail cell after being eaten alive by insects and bed bugs," Harper said in a statement. "The jail cell Mr Thompson was housed in was not fit for a diseased animal. He did not deserve this," he added.&nbsp;

Three months after his arrest, Thompson was discovered unconscious in his jail cell on September 19. Despite efforts by&nbsp;medical officials, he could not be revived and was&nbsp;pronounced dead, according to a Fulton County Medical Examiner's report.

As stated by Harper, jail records reveal guards and medical personnel observed Thompson's condition was getting worse but did nothing to provide aid or assist him, reported CBS News.&nbsp;

Despite a "severe bed bug infestation" in his psychiatric unit cell, the medical examiner's report stated that Thompson's body showed no obvious evidence of trauma.

The reason of death was mentioned in the report as undetermined.

"It's no secret that the dilapidated and rapidly eroding conditions of the current facility make it incredibly difficult to meet the goal of providing a clean, well-maintained and healthy environment for all inmates and staff," the Fulton County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The statement added that it has spent an additional $500,000 immediately "to address the infestation of bed bugs, lice, and other vermin within the Fulton County Jail."

The jail has also updated "protocols for security rounds to include addressing sanitary conditions," according to the statement.

Bed bug bites are not usually deadly, but in some rare circumstances, prolonged exposure to a massive bed bug infestation can cause severe anaemia, which can be lethal if left untreated,&nbsp;said&nbsp;Michael Potter, an entomologist at the University of Kentucky and a&nbsp;specialist&nbsp;in bed bugs, who spoke to the BBC.&nbsp;

"Bed bugs feed on blood and very large numbers of bed bugs feed on very large amounts of blood," Potter said.

Cold blooded insects are more susceptible to ill effects of climate change as they do not have the ability to change their body temperature in accordance with changing external temperature.&nbsp;

US Department of Defense has supported the research.

"We needed a modeling tool to understand how insect populations will be affected by variations in temperature," said &nbsp;Dr Kate Duffy, a former postdoctoral researcher at NASA's Ames Research Centre.&nbsp;

"And that's what we aimed to offer with this study: a more direct and accurate way for scientists to understand this dynamic," she added.

The study has raised fears that a loss of pollinators could cause a shortage of food crops.

The aim of the survey was to count bug splats on car registration plates. For this, they created an app called Bugs Matter&nbsp;for use by ordinary citizens.

Users were asked to clean their license plates before heading out in their vehicle and then click pictures of the number of bugs they found splattered on the plates when they returned.

Those records were then sent to the team at Buglife, and they collated the data into a count of bug splats over a given time period for the entire UK—in this instance from 2004 to 2021.

It was later found that the fall was highest in England at 65 per cent with Wales recording 55 per cent fewer insects and Scotland 28 per cent.

“This vital study suggests that the number of flying insects is declining by an average of 34% per decade – this is terrifying,” The Guardian quoted Matt Shardlow of Buglife as saying.

“We cannot put off action any longer, for the health and wellbeing of future generations this demands a political and a societal response. It is essential that we halt biodiversity decline now.”

Although tentative, the pattern of timing in the origins of venomous fishes suggests tantalising clues of what was driving the evolution of their venom. Unlike insects, where venom evolved fairly evenly throughout their history, most origins of fish venom were concentrated in the Late Cretaceous and Eocene periods".

The “insect apocalypse” was highlighted in Monday’s “Proceedings of the National Academics of Science”, which was written by 56 scientists from around the world.

University of Connecticut’s entomologist - David Wagner is the lead author of 12 studies in the “proceedings”, and told The South China Morning Post that the insect kingdom is witnessing “death by a thousand cuts”.

The “insect apocalypse” resembles the pattern of a jigsaw puzzle, whereby scientists are unable to put together all the pieces.&nbsp; Wagner claims that scientists need to ascertain whether loss in insect populations is bigger than how it is with other species.

“There is some reason to worry more because they are the target of attack”, Wagner added.

Another author of the study - May Berenbaum from the University of Illinois told SCMP that loss of insects right now may be compared to climate change 30 years ago - when there were so significant measurements in place to figure out the extent of the damage.&nbsp;

“Insect decline is kind of comparable to climate change 30 years ago because the methods to assess the extent, the rate (of loss) were difficult”, Berenbaum said.

The findings reinforce current thinking about the way that waking anxiety plays out during REM sleep: in images or metaphors representing the most urgent worries, whether these involve catching the coronavirus (those clouds of insects) or violating mask-wearing protocols.

Taken together, the papers also hint at an answer to a larger question: What is the purpose of dreaming, if any?

The answers that science has on offer can seem mutually exclusive, or near so. Freud understood dreams as wish fulfillment; Finnish psychologist Antti Revonsuo saw them as simulations of pending threats. In recent years, brain scientists have argued that REM sleep — the period of sleep during which most dreaming occurs — bolsters creative thinking, learning and emotional health, providing a kind of unconscious psychotherapy.

Then again, there is some evidence that dreaming serves little or no psychological purpose — that it is no more than a “tuning of the mind in preparation for awareness,” as J. Allan Hobson, a Harvard psychiatrist, has said.

The four new studies are rooted in a more straightforward idea called the continuity hypothesis. This framework holds that the content of dreams simply reflects what people thought, felt and did during the day — the good and the bad, the hopeful and the frightening. In one study, Cassidy MacKay and Teresa DeCicco of Trent University in Canada compared dream journals kept by students in the first two weeks of the spread of the coronavirus in North America with the journals of students logged before anyone had heard of COVID-19.

The researchers categorized each image, using a standardized measure, into types such as body parts, animals, food and medical objects. The differences in the early pandemic logs jumped out.

“People were clearly thinking about coronavirus-related events, like waiting in grocery lines, and had heads in their dreams, the body part associated with catching and spreading the virus,” DeCicco said.

People with persistent waking anxieties also tended to play out scenarios involving future work, relationships and life generally in their heads over the course of a day. Previous research has correlated this pattern to scene-shifting in dreams: the frequent changing of the setting, from indoors to outdoors, city to country, mountains to coast. MacKay and DeCicco found that dreamers during the first phase of the pandemic recorded far more such shifts in their REM mini-dramas.

“These are classic anxiety dreams,” DeCicco said.

In another of the studies, Barrett recruited nearly 3,000 people online to track, describe and write about their dreams. She assessed the content of those essays, using a language-analysis algorithm that maps words onto categories like “anger,” “sadness,” “body,” “health” and “death.” These dreams, too, had all the hallmarks of heightened waking anxiety, but emotions like anger and sadness were much more prevalent among women than men.

“I wasn’t expecting this, but the findings suggest to me this idea that men are mainly experiencing fear of getting sick and dying, health fears,” Barrett said. “Women have been weathering more secondary effects; they tend to be the ones nursing sick family members, more often than males, for instance.”

Not all the dreams, in either study, were infused with darkness and fear, and many were pleasant, involving reunions with friends or family, or featuring the containment and elimination of the virus. They included wishes and threats, healthy measures and mistakes, and adjustments to news of the spread: learning and emotional processing. There were also periodic injections of hope.

In short, the studies suggest that dreaming does not serve just one purpose but many.

For everyday dreamers during the pandemic, it may be enough to know that COVID-19 nightmares, like any others, tend to be emotionally over-the-top. “It was scary in the dream, but you wake up and it’s funny,” Barrett said. “The crisis is smaller than you thought.”

On top of pesticides and habitat loss, increased exposure to electromagnetic radiation is “probably having a negative impact on the insect world,” according to the study presented in Stuttgart, which is yet to be peer reviewed.

The analysis of 190 scientific studies was carried out by Germany’s Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) together with two NGOs, one from Germany and one from Luxembourg.

Of the 83 studies deemed scientifically relevant, 72 showed that radiation had a negative effect on bees, wasps and flies.

These effects ranged from a reduced ability to navigate due to the disturbance of magnetic fields to damage to genetic material and larvae.

Mobile phone and Wi-Fi radiation in particular opens the calcium channels in certain cells, meaning they absorb more calcium ions.

This can trigger a biochemical chain reaction in insects, the study said, disrupting circadian rhythms and the immune system.

“The study shows that we must keep our eyes open in all directions when analyzing the causes of the dramatic insect decline,” said Johannes Enssle, head of NABU in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

“The subject is uncomfortable for many of us because it interferes with our daily habits and there are powerful economic interests behind mobile communication technology,” Enssle said.

Peter Hensinger of the German consumer protection organization Diagnose Funk said closer attention must be paid to the possible negative effects of radiation on both animals and humans, particularly with regard to the introduction of 5G technology.

Networks equipped with 5G are expected to offer speeds 100 times faster than existing 4G networks, but the technology has been met with strong opposition from some quarters, especially among environmental campaigners.
