<p>As per the BBC report, the nightmare began when in 2003 Greater Manchester Police arrested Malkinson, a resident of Grimsby, for a crime he knew nothing about.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite fervently denying involvement and lacking any forensic evidence linking him to the attack, he was wrongfully identified by the victim in an identity parade. The next year, he was jailed for life, with a minimum sentence of seven years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The student of Information Science, who back then was 37-year-old and was temporarily working as a security guard, faced a legal battle where everything seemed to conspire against him.</p>

<p>He faced witnesses with criminal records whose credibility was never properly scrutinised. Even when Malkinson cooperated with the police, they remained dismissive of his innocence. His refusal to falsely confess to a crime he didn't commit meant he had to endure the unimaginable pain of 17 years behind bars.</p>

<h2><strong>Faith eroded</strong></h2>

<p>While incarcerated, Malkinson's faith in justice eroded as he encountered bureaucratic indifference.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Malkinson claims that attempts to present his case were met with "indifference,"&nbsp;and the possibility of rehabilitation was denied since he maintained his innocence.</p>

<p>He was finally released in December 2020 on a strict life licence. The charity 'Appeal' has been a champion of his innocence,&nbsp;exposing a series of missed opportunities in the investigation.</p>

<p>Thanks to advances in DNA analysis, crucial evidence was identified, leading to the arrest of a new suspect. Yet, the process remains slow, and Malkinson seeks a full investigation into the failings of the Greater Manchester Police and an independent review by the Criminal Cases Review Commission.</p>

<p>"I want the CCRC Chair Helen Pitcher to apologise for failings and commission an external, independent review aimed at learning lessons from what went wrong in their handling of my case," said Malkinson.</p>

<p>"I am unspeakably angry with Greater Manchester Police. I want those who have done wrong to be brought to account," he added.</p>

<p>Speaking to the press outside the court after Wednesday's (July 26th) ruling, the wrongly incarnated man said that the conviction left "a gaping black hole in my life".&nbsp;</p>

<p>A nine-member Reparation Task Force in the US state of California on Saturday voted to approve recommendations that could mean hundreds of billions of dollars in payments to Black residents for injustices of the past.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The committee, formed nearly two years ago, met in Oakland and gave final approval to the list of proposals which will now head to the state lawmakers to be considered for a legislation.</p>

<p>Among the list of approvals granted by the task force&nbsp;is a public apology, acknowledging the&nbsp;state’s responsibility for past wrongs and promising that it will not repeat them.</p>

<p>Democrat leader&nbsp;Barbara Lee, who is co-sponsoring a bill to study&nbsp;reparation proposals for African Americans called upon states and the Biden administration to pass legislation regarding the same.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Reparations are not only morally justifiable, but they have the potential to address longstanding racial disparities and inequalities,” said Lee.</p>

<p>The proposal is being called the country's most sweeping effort to devise a reparations programme.&nbsp;One of the recommendations of the panel is to create a new agency that provides services to the descendant kin of enslaved people to figure out the reparation amount they are owed.</p>

<p>According to some economists, the proposal,&nbsp;if implemented, could cost the exchequer as much as $800&nbsp;billion (2.5 times the annual budget of California) for decades of over-policing, disproportionate incarceration and housing discrimination.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A New York Times report stated that eligible&nbsp;Black Californians should receive up to $148,099 with the estimate based on the figure of $3,366 for each year they lived in California from the early 1930s to the late 1970s when discriminatory practices were at their peak.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The San Francisco Board of Supervisors suggested the elimination of personal debt, tax burdens and annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years to Black residents.&nbsp;</p>
