"To ensure preparedness, we are evacuating only the IIPM building as a precautionary measure on receiving information that a team member from the building may have been in proximity to COVID-19 suspect," said IT major`s Bengaluru development centre head Gururaj Deshpande in an e-mail to all Infoscions.

The IT giant has a huge campus in the Electronic City with over a dozen buildings housing its development centres and corporate house since the 1990s.

"Please note that this is only to ensure the safety of our employees and we will sanitise the place for our safety," said Deshpande.

Awaiting updates to share, Deshpande requested the techies to stay calm to ensure they are cautious and better prepared.

"We request you to refrain from believing in or spreading any information that is hearsay/rumours via any of the social media channels," the IT major`s Bengaluru development centre head said.

He also advised the employees to reach out to the company`s global help desk numbers in case of emergency.

"We request your support to ensure we handle this situation with utmost responsibility," Deshpande added.

The Infosys case came on a day when the Karnataka government advised all the IT and biotech firms across this IT hub to allow their employees to work from their homes for a week to avoid risking them to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Confirming that the IIPM building was vacated early on Friday for safety and sanitisation, an official of the company`s Phoenix emergency team said, that the development centre in the building was free and not occupied since then.

"Nothing to worry. Infosys is safe and secure. Employees will get a text message from our (Phoenix) team to report for work on the day they will be intimated," the official said during a phone call.

Market benchmark Sensex surrendered early gains to end 208 points lower on Wednesday as energy, power, auto and financial stocks came under selling pressure.

After plunging 473 points from the day's high in a choppy session, the 30-share BSE index settled 208.43 points, or 0.50 per cent, lower at 41,115.38. It hit an intra-day high of 41,532.29 and a low of 41,059.04.

Likewise, the broader NSE Nifty closed 62.95 points, or 0.52 per cent, down at 12,106.90.

ONGC was the top loser in the Sensex pack, tumbling 5.13 per cent, followed by NTPC, Maruti, Kotak Bank, HDFC, Asian Paints, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank.

On the other hand, Nestle India, TCS, Infosys, HCL Tech, SBI and Bharti Airtel ended with gains of up to 1.86 per cent.

According to experts, major stocks are in the process of correcting to their support levels ahead of the Union Budget.

Further, global agencies slashing India's growth outlook and a tepid start to the earnings season are also weighing on domestic investor sentiment, they added.

Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul ended with gains.

European markets were also trading on a positive note in their early sessions.

Brent crude oil futures fell 0.67 per cent to USD 64.16 per barrel.

The rupee was trading flat at 71.22 per US dollar (intra-day).

The year-on-year profit growth was 23.5 per cent. 
 
Wipro gained by 1.4 per cent while <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/sensex-jumps-634-points-as-us-iran-tensions-ease-auto-and-realty-stocks-gain-273229">HCL Technologies</a> was up by 1.3 per cent. Sun Pharma, Cipla and Dr Reddy's ticked up by 2 per cent, 1.2 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. The other prominent winners were Britannia, Hindustan Lever and Kotak Mahindra Bank. 
 
However, Yes Bank plunged by 4.8 per cent to Rs 42.60 per share as reports said that co-promoter Rana Kapoor, and his family-run firms Yes Capital India and Morgan Credits have exited the bank, thus losing all control and voting rights. 
 
The other losers included Tata Motors, Eicher Motors, Maruti, JSW Steel, Hindalco and Adani Ports.

Infosys shares have lost 10% of their value since the letter surfaced. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)launched a probe into the claims, and its Indian counterpart, the Securities and Exchange Board of India, asked the company to submit information on the complaints. "With respect to the anonymous complaints, there is no prima facie evidence that the company has received until date to corroborate any of the allegations made," Infosys said in a letter dated Nov. 2 to the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The exchange had asked the company to explain why it had not disclosed the letter. The Bengaluru-based company said since the allegations were not deemed "material", the company was not obligated to disclose them. "If the information in the letter is taken on face value without any investigation, then you can do a grave injustice to the accused, who don't have a chance to defend themselves," said Ramanujam Sridhar, CEO of Brand-Comm, a communications consultancy based in Bengaluru. "It would then be trial by media." Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani said last month that Parekh and Chief Financial Officer Nilanjan Roy, who was also accused of misconduct in the letter, were recused from the board's investigation. The complaints are still under investigation and the company is not in a position to determine "concreteness, credibility and materiality of complaints," Infosys said in the letter. Former CEO Vishal Sikka left the company two years ago after a whistleblower complaint. Parekh took over in January last year and laid out a roadmap to revive the company's fortunes, as the sector stared at a slowdown in spending from key clients.

Software major Infosys said on Tuesday it has engaged law firm Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and Company to conduct an independent investigation on two complaints by some employees about unethical measures to boost profits.

An anonymous group calling itself 'ethical employees' alleged in a letter to the board of Infosys and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that company's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Salil Parekh and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Nilanjan Roy took disturbing unethical measures to boost profits and short-term revenue.

The complainants said they have emails and voice recordings to substantiate the claims.

"These complaints are being dealt with in an objective manner," said Chairman of Infosys Ltd Nandan Nilekani. "The undated whistleblower complaint largely deals with allegations relating to the CEO's international travel to the United States and Mumbai," he said in a statement.

Nilekani said the company's statutory auditors Deloitte India has also been completely updated on this matter post the board meeting of October 11.

"Although we have not been provided any of the emails or voice recordings, we will ensure that the generalised allegations are investigated to the fullest extent. Additionally, to ensure independence in these investigations the CEO and CFO have been recused from this matter."

Because the investigation is ongoing, said Nilekani, there will be no further comment so that investigation may be conducted in a thorough and objective manner.&nbsp;

"At the appropriate time, we will provide a summary of the investigations results. The board is committed to uphold the highest standard of corporate governance and protect the interests of all stakeholders."

In one of the letters, the whistleblower said that Parekh and Roy were pressuring the finance team to show more profits in their treasury management by taking risks and making changes to policies.

"He (Parekh) directs them to make wrong assumptions to show margins. Several billion-dollar deals of the last few quarters have nil margin. Please ask auditors to check deal proposals, margins, undisclosed upfront commitments made and revenue recognition," the letter said.

"In large contracts like Verizon, Intel, joint ventures in Japan, ABN AMRO acquisition, revenue recognition matters are forced, which are not as per accounting standards," the letter stated.

At 11 am on Tuesday, Infosys was trading 14.01 per cent lower at Rs 660.30 per share.&nbsp;

Indian shares edged higher on Monday ahead of the release of key inflation data, while broader Asian peers rose on optimism from the positive tone of the Sino-US trade talks.

The broader NSE Nifty rose 0.27% at 11,336.70 as of 0415 GMT, while the benchmark BSE Sensex was up 0.24% at 38,211.46.

Indian retail inflation probably reached a 12-month high in September, but still leaving room for further interest rate cuts because it's expected to remain below the Reserve Bank of India's target, according to a Reuters poll.

However, India's industrial output shrank at its fastest rate in more than six years in August, reflecting the impact of an economic slowdown.

India's growth has been plagued by a drop in demand and flooding due to above-normal monsoon, Barclays analyst Rahul Bajoria said, but indicated that there could be a bounce-back in the second half of the year.

"The case remains strong for further support to aggregate demand, and the household sector in particular," Bajoria wrote in a note.

Metal stocks led gains as the Nifty metals rose about 1.1% as commodity prices rose due to the progress in the Sino-US trade talks.

Meanwhile, IT shares fell as India's No. 2 software exporter Infosys Ltd reported a September-quarter profit that could only meet expectations on Friday, signalling a tricky macroeconomic environment for the sector

Infosys results came after a below-par showing from larger rival Tata Consultancy Services a day earlier.

Infosys shares fell 3.44%, dragging the Nifty IT index 1%.

Meanwhile, broader Asian peers rose as US President Donald Trump outlined the first phase of a deal to end a trade war with China and suspended a threatened tariff hike, though officials on both sides said much more work needed to be done.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged up 0.5%.

IT services major Infosys said on Friday its consolidated net profit dropped by 2.2 per cent to Rs 4,019 crore for the July to September quarter amid the domestic and global slowdown.

It had recorded a profit of Rs 4,110 crore in the year-ago period.

Sequentially, however, the profit moved up 5.8 per cent from Rs 3,798 crore in the April to June quarter.

In constant currency terms, Infosys posted revenue growth of 11.4 per cent year-on-year while in US dollar terms, the numbers grew by 9.9 per cent.

In rupee terms, the revenue totalled Rs 22,629 crore, up 9.8 per cent year-on-year and 3.8 per cent quarter-on-quarter.

Operating profit was Rs 4,912 crore, marking a timid growth of 0.4 year-on-year and 9.9 per cent quarter-on-quarter.

The operating margin was 21.7 per cent with basic earning per share at Rs 9.46, virtually flat year-on-year but with a growth of 7.1 per cent quarter-on-quarter.

The company also announced an interim dividend of Rs 8 per share."Our performance was robust on multiple dimensions -- revenue growth, digital growth, operating margins, operational efficiencies, large deal signings and reduction in attrition," said Managing Director and CEO Salil Parekh.

"Q2 witnessed another quarter of all-round growth in industry segments and geographies which is a testimony to our strong credentials and client relevance," he said.

"Large deal wins were 2.8 billion dollars. We are especially pleased by the reduction in attrition driven by our focus on the enhanced employee value proposition."

Infosys management revised its full-year constant currency revenue growth guidance to 9 to 10 per cent from 8.5 to 10 per cent earlier.

Sensex, Nifty lifted by Infosys, Yes Bank; DHFL sinks

Indian shares settled higher on Monday, as IT giant Infosys Ltd surged to an all-time high on the back of strong quarterly results and a hike in the revenue forecast.

The broader NSE Nifty closed up 0.31% at 11,588.35, while the benchmark BSE Sensex settled 0.41% higher at 38,896.71.

Shares of Infosys climbed 7.2% to a record closing high on their best day in nearly four years, while Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd advanced 3.7% after Morgan Stanley double upgraded the stock.

DHFL's rival Indiabulls Housing Finance Ltd, a component of the Nifty 50, fell 4.1% on Monday and checked the gains on the index.

This was also DHFL's worst day since Sept. 21, 2018, when concerns over about a credit crunch in Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services and DHFL first sparked a sell-off in the share market. IT czar and chairman of tech giant Infosys Nandan Nilekani Saturday said the company was fully aligned with its growth strategy and that he was very optimistic of things going well.

"Absolutely, stability is not a question. I think a way beyond that. The company is fully aligned. Salil Parekh, CEO and MD of the firm, has come in and articulated a great strategy," he said.

"You can see that in numbers - the company is growing very well, people are very motivated," he said in response to a question whether stability was back at the company.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 38th annual general meeting of Infosys, he said, "So I'm very optimistic, things are going well."

Nilekani was appointed as the chairman to steer the tech giant in August 2017, after months of acrimony between founders and the then management led by R Seshasayee (chairman) and Vishal Sikka (CEO and MD).

The IT major held its 38th AGM Saturday that was attended by hundreds of shareholders from the city and different parts of the country.

Responding to a question related to Panaya and Skava businesses by shareholders, Parekh during the AGM said as stated in the financial report and results, Panaya and Skava were not being held as assets for sale.

He said, We are now looking at how we are going to re-focus and repurpose activities within those businesses that will help in the areas that we are now looking to grow the company in and that's the activity that is starting."

"We have assigned the senior members of the leadership team one each for Panay and Skava, who are spending a lot of time with addition to their roles trying to see how for example we can combine these in what we are doing in terms of retail or manufacturing segment," he said.

"We hope to have better results from this focus in short and medium-term," he added.

Infosys had earlier too indicated that it has dropped plans to sell Panaya and two other subsidiaries Skava and Kallidus after it failed to find any potential buyers.

In April last, Infosys had announced its plan to sell Panaya - the Israeli firm whose acquisition became a contentious issue between the founders and the erstwhile management led by Vishal Sikka - along with Kallidus and Skava.

It expected the sale to be completed by March 2019.

A whistle-blower report in 2017 had alleged wrongdoings by Infosys and some officials in the USD 200- million acquisition of Israeli automation technology firm Panaya by the Bengaluru-based IT services firm.

An internal audit committee set up by Infosys found no evidence supporting the whistle-blowers allegations.

However, Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy had demanded that the full report by Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher on the whistleblower allegations be made public.

Later in October 2017, the Infosys board - under its new chairman Nandan Nilekani -- gave a clean chit to the controversial Panaya acquisition, saying there was no merit in the allegations of wrongdoing.

Responding to investors regarding investigation report on Panaya not being made public, Nilekani said, The investigation report is a confidential document and many statements given during the process was given by people on the assurance of expectation of confidentiality. So the board is very comfortable with the decision to keep it as it is."

Earlier in his address to the AGM, Nilekani said Infosys was embracing the Live Enterprise vision and continuously changing to prepare for the new world.

The Home Ministry has cancelled the registration of Bengaluru-based NGO Infosys Foundation for alleged violation of norms in receiving foreign grants, officials said Monday.

All non-government organisations (NGOs) are mandatorily required to be registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act or FCRA to receive foreign funding.

The Home Ministry had last year served show cause notice to Infosys Foundation for failing to submit annual income and expenditure statement on foreign funding for up to six years despite repeated reminders, officials said.

The registration was cancelled as Infosys Foundation allegedly did not file income and expenditure statement on foreign funding for the past few years, they said.

As per FCRA guidelines, registered associations are required to submit electronically an online annual report with scanned copies of income and expenditure statement, receipts and payment account, balance sheet, etc., for every financial year within nine months of the closure of the financial year.

Associations which do not receive foreign contribution during a particular year are also required to furnish a 'NIL' return for that financial year within the aforesaid period, read the guidelines.

When contacted, Infosys Foundation said its de-registration from the FCRA followed a request it proactively made to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

"This (request) was done as the Infosys Foundation does not come under the purview of the FCRA following the amendment made to the act in 2016. We had approached the ministry to consider this, and thank them for granting our request," said Rishi Basu from the foundation's corporate marketing and communications division.

Established in 1996, Infosys Foundation supports projects in education, rural development, health care, arts and culture, and destitute care.

According to the foundation's website, its mission is to work in remote regions of India. Sudha Murthy is the chairperson of Infosys Foundation.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) pulled out a net Rs 226.19 crore Thursday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) net bought equities to the tune of Rs 1,206.16 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

In Asia, Korea's Kospi inched up 0.14 per cent, Japan's Nikkei climbed 0.38 per cent and Topix gained 0.35 per cent.

According to experts, inflow of foreign liquidity in expectation of rate cut from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and revival in earnings will provide some stability in the market.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net buyers in the capital markets, putting in Rs 543.36 crore Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold equities to the tune of Rs 437.70 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is holding a two-day meeting between April 2 and April 4 for the first bi-monthly policy statement for 2019-20. The RBI will unveil its first bi-monthly monetary policy decision of this new fiscal on Thursday.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the rupee appreciated by 9 paise to trade at 68.65 to the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.52 per cent to trade at $69.73 per barrel.

Elsewhere in Asia, benchmark equity indices in Shanghai, Tokyo and Seoul were trading positive.

Sensex rises over 150 points, Nifty above 11,750

The stock market continued its winning run for a seventh consecutive session Tuesday with the BSE Sensex rising 268 points to close at over six-month high led by gains in index heavyweights like ITC, RIL and Infosys amid continuous foreign fund inflow.

The 30-share index started off on a strong footing at 38,218.59 points and touched a high of 38,396.06 before winding up at 38,363.47, recording a significant rise of 268.40, or 0.70 per cent. Intra-day it also hit a low of 38,078.23.

The gauge had climbed over 1,420 points in the previous six sessions.

The 50-share NSE Nifty closed at 11,509.80, higher by 70.20 points, or 0.61 per cent, after hovering between 11,543.85 and 11,451.55.

These are the highest levels for both indices since September 7.

The gains on domestic bourses were led by PSU, oil and gas, infrastructure, realty, banking and power sector stocks as investors indulged in widening their exposure.

Traders said widening of positions by retail investors amid continued buying by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) as expectations that the incumbent government would return to power after the general elections, starting next month, boosted investor confidence.

Broadly, sentiments continued to remain bullish despite profit-booking at current levels by speculators, they added.

Sentiment also got a lift after the GST Council approved a transition plan for the implementation of new tax structure for housing units at its meeting earlier in the day.

Most other Asian markets held steady ahead of a Federal Reserve policy meeting later this week but were broadly at near six-month highs on expectations the US central bank might strike a dovish tone.

Sensex rises for seventh consecutive session; Nifty above 11,500

Extending its winning run to the fifth session, BSE benchmark Sensex climbed 269 points to hit six-month high of 38,024 led by a rally in banking stocks amid soaring foreign fund inflows, strengthening rupee and positive global cues.

After rallying nearly 500 points in afternoon trade, the Sensex settled 269.43 points or 0.71 per cent, higher at 38,024.32.

The NSE Nifty closed 83.60 points, or 0.74 per cent, up at 11,426.85.

The 30-share index breached the 38,000-mark for the first time in six months. It had ended at 38,090.64 on September 14, 2018.

Broader indices, however, ended on a mixed note, with BSE midcap ending 0.55 per cent higher and BSE smallcap slipping 0.34 per cent.

Kotak Bank was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, ending 4.31 per cent higher.

PowerGrid, TCS, ICICI Bank, SBI, HCL Tech, NTPC, Infosys, Bajaj Finance, HDFC duo, ONGC, Vedanta and IndusInd Bank too rose up to 2.84 per cent.

On the other hand, HUL, Yes Bank, ITC, Bharti Airtel, RIL, Sun Pharma and Axis Bank fell up to 2.16 per cent.

Sectorally, the BSE power, bankex, teck, oil and gas, IT and finance indices gained the most, rising up to 1.94 per cent; while BSE telecom, FMCG and energy indices fell up to 1.79 per cent.

"Benchmark indices outperformed with IT index leading from the front amid positive global cues, BREXIT &amp; Trade-deal deadline has been extended. Besides, PSU banks are moving out of PCA frame and global liquidity is increasing supported by dovish FOMC which is positive for India.&nbsp; 
Strengthening rupee and drop in yield is positive for rate sensitive stocks," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said.

During the week, Sensex surged 1352.89 points, or 3.68 per cent; while Nifty climbed 391.89 points or, 3.54 per cent.

The BSE-30 index gained by around 3.5 per cent in the past week. Rally in the Indian markets was led by strong foreign institutional investors (FII), buying on account of reduction in geopolitical risks and opinion polls suggesting a likely return of the NDA government in the upcoming general elections, said Sanjeev Zarbade, Vice President- PCG Research, Kotak Securities.

On a net basis, FIIs bought shares worth a net of Rs 1,482.99 crore on Thursday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net sellers to the tune of Rs 817.77 crore, provisional data available with the BSE showed.

"The flows from overseas from the FIIs have helped the markets, and a stable to stronger Rupee has been facilitated by likely year end repatriations too,? said Joseph Thomas, Head Research - Emkay Wealth Management.

Strengthening gains, the rupee appreciated 5 paise to 69.09 against the US dollar intra-day.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.56 per cent, Korea's Kospi was up 0.95 per cent, Shanghai Composite Index rallied 1.04 per cent, and Japan's Nikkei ended 0.77 per cent higher.

Similarly, in the Eurozone, Frankfurt's DAX gained 0.27 per cent. Paris CAC 40 rose 0.44 per cent.

London's FTSE was up 0.54 per cent in early deals.

Global crude benchmark Brent crude futures rose 0.43 per cent to USD 67.52 per barrel.

Sensex ends above 38,000; best closing in six months

The government on Wednesday said IT major Infosys will develop the next-generation income tax filing system for Rs 4,241.97 crore which will cut down the processing time for returns to one day from 63 days and expedite refunds.&nbsp;

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave its "approval to expenditure sanction of Rs 4,241.97 crore for Integrated E-filing and Centralised Processing Centre 2.0 Project of the Income Tax Department", Union minister Piyush Goyal said.

Briefing media about the decision, he said the processing time at present for Income Tax Reurn (ITR) is 63 days and it will come down to one day after implementation of the project.

Goyal said the project is expected to be completed in 18 months and will be launched after three months of testing.

Infosys, he said, has been selected to implement the project after the bidding process.

The current system, he said, has been a success and new project will be more tax friendly.

The e-filing and Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) projects have enabled end-to-end automation of all processes within the Income Tax Department using various innovative methods to provide taxpayer services and to promote voluntary compliance.

The Cabinet also sanctioned a consolidated cost of Rs 1,482.44 crore for the existing CPC-ITR 1.0 project up to 2018-19.

Goyal also informed that tax refunds worth Rs 1.83 lakh crore have been issued so far in the current fiscal.

The decision will ensure transparency and accountability besides faster processing of returns and issue of refunds to the taxpayers' bank account directly without any interface with the Income Tax Department.

The broad objectives of the integration project include faster and accurate outcomes for taxpayer, enhancing user experience at all stages, improving taxpayer awareness and education through continuous engagement, according to an official release.

Besides, it will also be promoting voluntary tax compliance and managing outstanding demand.&nbsp;

Government clears Rs 4,242 crore IT-filing project, selects Infosys as developer 

The BSE Sensex soared over 450 points Tuesday after lower retail inflation numbers for December raised RBI rate cut hopes, leading to intense buying in rate-sensitive stocks, supported by strong global cues.

The Sensex rally was led by Yes Bank, Infosys, Reliance Industries and TCS, surging up to 3.86 per cent.

The 30-share index settled 464.77 points, or 1.30 per cent, higher at 36,318.33, while the broader NSE Nifty rallied 149.20 points, or 1.39 per cent, to finish at 10,886.80.

Market sentiment remained upbeat over retail inflation dropping to an 18-month low of 2.19 per cent in December, creating headroom for the Reserve Bank to ease monetary policy next month.

Another set of official data showed that the wholesale inflation too eased to an eight-month low of 3.80 per cent in December.

In the Sensex pack, other gainers were Vedanta, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, Hero MotoCorp, HUL, Asian Paints, HDFC duo and ONGC -- gaining as much as 2.87 per cent.

Bucking the overall trend, Maruti, PowerGrid and ICICI Bank ended in the red.

On a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 732.46 crore Monday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers to the tune of Rs 527.49 crore, provisional data available with BSE showed.

"Domestic market was buoyed by broad-based buying across all sectors and particularly led by rate sensitive sectors on the expectation of a probable rate cut considering that Index of Industrial Production for the month of November slumped to mere 0.5 per cent while CPI inflation eased for a 6th straight month to 2.19 per cent in December," Paras Bothra, President, Equity Research, Ashika Group, said.&nbsp;

Besides, positive cues from European and other Asian markets lifted sentiments.

Elsewhere in Asia, Korea's Kospi jumped 1.58 per cent, Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.36 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rallied 2.02 per cent, and Japan's Nikkei gained 0.96 per cent.

In Europe, Frankfurt's DAX was up 0.41 per cent, Paris CAC 40 rose 0.56 per cent, and London's FTSE gained 0.33 per cent.

The rupee, meanwhile, depreciated 20 paise against the US dollar to 71.12.

The Sensex rally was led by Yes Bank, Infosys, Reliance Industries and TCS, surging up to 3.86 per cent. The 30-share index settled 464.77 points, or 1.30 per cent, higher at 36,318.33, while the broader NSE Nifty rallied 149.20 points, or 1.39 per cent, to finish at 10,886.80. Market sentiment remained upbeat over retail inflation dropping to an 18-month low of 2.19 per cent in December, creating headroom for the Reserve Bank to ease monetary policy next month. Another set of official data showed that the wholesale inflation too eased to an eight-month low of 3.80 per cent in December. In the Sensex pack, other gainers were Vedanta, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, Hero MotoCorp, HUL, Asian Paints, HDFC duo and ONGC -- gaining as much as 2.87 per cent. Bucking the overall trend, Maruti, PowerGrid and ICICI Bank ended in the red. On a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 732.46 crore Monday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers to the tune of Rs 527.49 crore, provisional data available with BSE showed. "Domestic market was buoyed by broad-based buying across all sectors and particularly led by rate sensitive sectors on the expectation of a probable rate cut considering that Index of Industrial Production for the month of November slumped to mere 0.5 per cent while CPI inflation eased for a 6th straight month to 2.19 per cent in December," Paras Bothra, President, Equity Research, Ashika Group, said. Besides, positive cues from European and other Asian markets lifted sentiments. Elsewhere in Asia, Korea's Kospi jumped 1.58 per cent, Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.36 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rallied 2.02 per cent, and Japan's Nikkei gained 0.96 per cent. In Europe, Frankfurt's DAX was up 0.41 per cent, Paris CAC 40 rose 0.56 per cent, and London's FTSE gained 0.33 per cent. The rupee, meanwhile, depreciated 20 paise against the US dollar to 71.12. The benchmark Brent crude futures rose 0.78 per cent to $59.45 per barrel.

Kotak Mahindra Bank's m-cap fell Rs 4,829.04 crore to Rs 2,32,958.82 crore and that of Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) dropped Rs 2,575.93 crore to Rs 3,82,785.70 crore.

HDFC Bank's valuation dipped Rs 1,522.93 crore to Rs 5,74,399.48 crore and that of RIL fell Rs 728.93 crore to Rs 6,95,910.71 crore.

In the ranking of top-10 firms, RIL once again became the number one firm on Friday, with TCS taking the second spot, followed by HDFC Bank, HUL, ITC, HDFC, Infosys, SBI, ICICI Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Profit attributable for the three months through December 31 was 36.09 billion rupees ($511.94 million), missing the average estimate of 41.31 billion rupees from 25 analysts compiled by Refinitiv Eikon.

Last year, it made a profit of 51.29 billion rupees, helped by tax benefits from the firm's deal with the US&nbsp;Internal Revenue Service.

The NSE Nifty too slipped by 26.65 points to close at 10,794.95.&nbsp;

The major losers on the Sensex included IndusInd Bank, Tata Motors, TCS, Yes Bank and L&amp;T.

Among the gainers were ITC, ONGC, Vedanta Ltd, Infosys, Axis Bank and HDFC.

On the macro front, the rupee was trading lower by 21 paise to 70.55 against the US dollar.

Brent crude futures were trading 1.10 per cent higher at USD 62.36 per barrel.&nbsp;

After rallying close to 400 points earlier in the session, the 30-share index pared some gains but finished 157.34 points, or 0.44 per cent, higher at 35,807.28.

The broader NSE Nifty rose 49.95 points, or 0.47 per cent, to 10,779.80.

The biggest gainers in the Sensex pack were Reliance Industries, Infosys, NTPC, ONGC, HUL, PowerGrid, Asian Paints, ITC and HCL Tech, rising up to 2.10 per cent.

On the other hand, Hero MotoCorp, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, Tata Steel and Maruti Suzuki fell up to 1.71 per cent.

Global sentiment improved as tensions between the White House and US Fed eased. Strong consumer spending data in the US also added to the momentum, said Hemang Jani, Head - Advisory, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas.

With two more trading days to go until the end of the year, liquidity and sentiment are set to drive market in short-term, he added.

Banking stocks fell amid reports that the government was likely to infuse Rs 28,615 crore into seven public sector banks (PSBs) through recapitalisation bonds by the end of this month.

The rupee, meanwhile, weakened against the US dollar, and was trading at 70.28 a dollar, down 0.27 per cent from its previous close.

Brent crude futures dropped 3.78 per cent to $53.20 per barrel.

On a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 80.28 crore Wednesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net sellers to the tune of Rs 137.63 crore, provisional data available with BSE showed.

Elsewhere in Asia, Japan's Nikkei surged 3.88 per cent and Korea's Kospi ended 0.02 per cent higher, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.67 per cent and Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.61 per cent.

IT firm Infosys Thursday announced inauguration of its new technology and innovation hub in Hartford in the US.

The company also announced that it has hired more than 7,000 American workers in the last 18 months as a part of its ongoing commitment to accelerate the pace of digital innovation for American enterprises.

"The Hartford hub...Will help Infosys work more closely with its clients in the region and will serve as the global Hub for Infosys' InsurTech and HealthTech efforts. The hub will feature living labs for the future of insurance, the future of healthcare and the future of manufacturing amongst others," Infosys said in a BSE filing.
