So, if one or two (batsmen) from the top order can bowl it will definitely help the team, of course, depending on pitch conditions and situations.</p>

<p>“Also, it will be a surprise element to the opposition, if a batter can bowl. So, moving ahead, there will be ample opportunities for batters to bowl,” the interim bowling coach continued.</p>

Gautam Gambhir reacts to Rahul Dravid’s 'powerful message' that makes him smile ahead of India coaching debut

<p>Ace batter Suryakumar Yadav is ready for his T20I captaincy debut against Sri Lanka, but more than that, he’s happy to have his ‘old mate’ Gautam Gambhir in the dressing room as the new India head coach. Suryakumar and Gautam have been bonding since SKY’s early days in Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL when GG was the captain. With both ready to begin their new stints, Suryakumar said he is&nbsp;looking forward to working with Gambhir.</p>

<p>Ahead of the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Saturday (July 26), Suryakumar spoke publicly&nbsp;for the first time since his unexpected appointment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Talking exclusively to BCCI.tv, SKY said he’s learned a lot about leadership by playing under various captains and cannot wait to get on the field and make the most of his chance.</p>

<p>“I have always enjoyed being a leader on the field even though I was not the captain. I have always learnt a lot of things from different captains. It’s a good feeling and a great responsibility,” the swashbuckling batter&nbsp;said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Having played under Gautam, who replaced Rahul Dravid as Team India’s new head coach, in IPL 2014, Suryakumar calls his relationship with Gambhir ‘special’. He added that both of them know about each other’s working styles, eventually helping SKY to become the captain his coach and the selectors have picked him for.</p>

<p>“This relationship is special because, in 2014, I played under him in KKR. It was special because from there only I got opportunities. The relationship is still strong.</p>

<p>“He (Gambhir) knows how I work, and what is my mindset when I come to practice sessions. I also know how he tries to work as a coach. It’s all about the lovely relationship we have, and very excited to see how it goes forward,” Suryakumar continued.</p>

<h2>Staying grounded is the key</h2>

<p>Suryakumar Yadav has played cricket long enough to know how important it is to remain grounded and continue working for betterment, speaking on the same lines as he gears up for a new challenge.</p>

<p>“I think the most important thing that I have learned from this sport is how humble you are after achieving or even after not doing well. I have learned when you do something on the ground, you have to leave it on the ground,” he said.</p>

<p>“This is not your life, this is just a part of your life. So you can’t be when you are doing well, you stay on the top, and when you are not doing well, you are underground.</p>

<p>“That’s one thing which you shouldn’t do ever as a sportsman, that’s one thing which I have learned, and that’s what helps me create balance in my life. If you are a good person, everything happens good,” SKY concluded.</p>

Suryakumar happy to have ‘old mate’ Gautam as head coach as he embraces T20I captaincy - WATCH

<p>Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s new head coach is refreshing for Indian cricket, feels former coach and veteran Ravi Shastri. Replacing Rahul Dravid for the top position, Gambhir, whom Shastri calls a no-nonsense guy, will have plenty riding on his shoulders; however, with the mature team at the helm and having worked or played with most players, the ‘young’ coach Gambhir can make the most of this chance, Shastri believes.</p>

<p>Shastri backed Gautam to bring fresh ideas and instil confidence into the side as the busy international calendar looms. With the away Sri Lanka tour being Gambhir’s first assignment as India's head coach, the former two-time World Cup winner will lead the team in the home season, beginning with the Bangladesh series in early September.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although Gautam hasn’t coached any domestic or international team before, he guided his former IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders, to their third title this season as a mentor.</p>

<p>“He's contemporary; he just had a great season in the IPL,” Shastri said of Gambhir on the ICC Review.&nbsp;“I think he's the right age where he's young, he'll come with fresh ideas. He knows most of the players, especially in the white-ball format, having been part of teams in the IPL. So I think it's refreshing.</p>

<p>“And we know with Gautam, he's a no-nonsense guy. He'll have his ideas as well. And the good thing for him is he's got a mature team. He's got a settled team, a mature team. I think even though you might think you're mature, you might benefit from some fresh ideas. So I think it'll be interesting times,” Shastri continued.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>‘Player management becomes a key for coach’</h2>

<p>Having been in Gautam’s shoes before, Shastri knows and understands what a head coach brings to the table.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ravi said it would be interesting to see how he manages his players and different squads with all the tools available.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Obviously, player management becomes the key as a coach," Shastri said.</p>

<p>"So it'll be interesting to see how he goes. I think he's got the tools, he's got the goods for the job, and he's got the experience," he further said.</p>

<p>"What their strengths are, what kind of human beings they are, and what kind of temperaments do they have. What are their personalities? A lot goes behind the scenes to understand a human being.</p>

<p>"I think that will be his most important task, which I think, again should not be a problem because he's contemporary. He's seen these guys from the outside, he's dealt with a lot of guys who might have played with KKR as well and for Lucknow [Super Giants] when he was there.</p>

<p>"And he's been around the circuit, the moment he finished cricket - and that was not too long ago - and he still is around, plays a lot of the legends cricket as well,” Shastri added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Team India's tour of Sri Lanka begins with the first of the three T20Is on Saturday (July 27) in Pallekele. Three ODIs will follow, starting August 1 in Colombo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“He is one of the deserving candidates,” Agarkar said of Suryakumar Yadav. “He is one of the best T20 batters in the world. We feel that Surya has all the necessary qualities to be a good captain. We wanted a captain, who is likely to play all the games.”</p>

<p>“Surya has the necessary ability to lead the team. We wanted a captain who is around. We will see how he will do in two years time,” Agarkar continued.</p>

<p>Clearing the air on Surya’s role in the white-ball side, Agarkar affirmed that he is a batting mainstay in the shortest format and is not considered for ODIs, given Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and keeper-batter Rishabh Pant are back in the reckoning.</p>

<p>“At this point, Surya is being seen just as a T20 player, not being considered for ODIs,” Agarkar added.</p>

More importantly, with the Champions Trophy [in 2025] and a big tour of Australia [in November 2024], obviously, they would be motivated enough. And then, hopefully, if they can keep their fitness, the 2027 [ODI] World Cup as well,” he continued.</p>

<p>Re-emphasising the importance of cricket being a team sport, Gautam said the decision to stick around till then remains personal to both and that any call made will be looking at the team's benefit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"But this is a very personal decision. I can't say how much cricket is left in them. Ultimately, it's up to them as well, it's up to the players. How much can they contribute to the team's success because, ultimately, it's the team that is important.</p>

<p>"But looking at what Virat and Rohit can deliver, I think they still have a lot of cricket [left to play]. They're still world-class players, and obviously, any team would want to have both of them for as long as possible,” Gambhir continued.</p>

<h2>Workload management</h2>

<p>Rohit, 37, Kohli, 35, and Bumrah (Team India’s best bowler across formats) are three key players, and Gambhir believes managing their workload is in the best interest of Indian cricket.</p>

<p>"I've said it before, workload management for someone like Jasprit (Bumrah) is important. He is one rare bowler, which anyone would want. You want him to play important games. That's why the workload management for not just him but fast bowlers is important."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Detailing further on what made him believe that Gill has both confidence and game awareness, Rathour recalled an instance ahead of the England Tests earlier this year, when Gill approached the leadership group to take up the number three role willingly. Although he was out of touch, having failed to score a fifty in the past 12 innings in the lead-up to that, Gill slammed a stunning hundred in the second innings of the Vizag Test.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The talk came from him. He felt that No 3 was an ideal position for him to bat, and the management group backed him. It was his decision, which was backed by Rahul, myself and Rohit, and he turned it around in the England series,” Rathour continued.</p>

<p>The former batting coach also shared what he thought of Gill when he first saw him bat in the nets.</p>

<p>“When I first saw him in the nets, my first impression was like everybody else’s. I saw exactly what a lot of people were talking about and spoke about his special talent. When the first time I saw him playing, the immediate thought that went into my mind was ‘Whoa this kid is extremely talented’.</p>

<p>“What impressed me the most was his game awareness, which is something you don’t generally see in the young cricketers, who are coming through the ranks. He knew his game, he understood how he needed to bat in different situations and never shied away from challenges,” Rathour added.</p>
