The body of an Indian techie who drowned in the famous Glacier National Park in the US state of Montana&nbsp;has been recovered by the rangers.&nbsp;

Siddhant Vitthal Patil, a 26-year-old from India, fell into Avalanche Creek on July 6 when he was hiking at the park with his friends.&nbsp;

"After weeks of searching, rangers at Glacier National Park believe they have recovered the body of 26-year-old Siddhant Vitthal Patil from India today. Patil fell into Avalanche Creek on July 6, 2024, and drowned," the Glacier National Park officials informed on Saturday (Aug 3).

The rangers also found clothing and gear similar to what Patil was wearing at the time of the incident.&nbsp;

"Around 10:30 am on Saturday, a park visitor reported seeing a body in Avalanche Creek below the gorge. Rangers immediately began recovery efforts. The Flathead County coroner is working to confirm the identity through DNA or dental records."

Friends who were with Patil saw him go underwater and resurface before being swept up by the current into the gorge.

The rangers also corroborated the same chain of events, adding that submerged obstacles such as fallen trees or rocks may have limited Patil's ability to get out of the gorge.&nbsp;

Explaining why it took nearly a month for the search operation to finish, the rangers attributed the water depth and whitewater conditions during spring and summer runoff as the reason for the delay.

They could only investigate the large portions of the gorge after the water level had dropped. However, they still were not able to reach the deepest and most dangerous areas.&nbsp;

Patil's uncle, Pritesh Chaudhari, has been informed by the officials about the recovered body.&nbsp;

"We were informed by the US ranger officials that Siddhant's body was found. As we are grappling with this grief, we also like to thank the rangers for carrying out this search," Chaudhari was quoted as saying by news wire agency ANI.

"A special mention to Prem Bhandari who has been in constant touch with us for the last 27 days and supporting us. We have authorized Bhandari to arrange for Siddhant's remains to be sent to Pune and complete the formalities," he added, referring to Bhandari, a prominent Indian diaspora leader.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Notably, Patil was working at at Cadence Design Systems in San Jose, California at the time of the accident.&nbsp;

Records revealed Anand's December 2016 divorce application, which came before their twins were born. Remarkably, the divorce never happened.

Reports also unveiled the family's frequent relocations within San Francisco in the California state before settling in the ill-fated home.

Authorities had responded to calls at the residence on multiple occasions since their relocation, but the nature of those calls remains undisclosed.

There are two kinds of telescopes that are used to peer towards the sky - Optical telescopes, which help capture faint, faraway light sources and enable their study; Radio telescopes, which use giant antennae to capture radio waves from afar and help derive data out of them.

While optical telescopes and observatories are more commonly known, they have a limitation of only operating during the night. However, Radio telescopes can capture radio signals round-the-clock.&nbsp;

Based in a South African desert, the MeerKAT radio telescope comprising 64 antennae is the largest and most sensitive of its kind in the world, so far.

Some interesting observations from this telescope have emerged, thanks to data processing software written by Indian techies.

Known as the 'Automated Radio Telescope Image Processing Pipeline'(ARTIP), it is meant to help process the huge amount of radio signal data generated by the telescope and convert it into data that can be used for scientific studies.&nbsp;

"There is a lot of noise (disturbance) in the radio signals, so that has to be cleaned up, signals have to be calibrated, data processing has to be carried out that's&nbsp;how the ARTIP software speeds up the process for scientists,"&nbsp;Chhaya Dhanani, Portfolio Head Engineering for Research, Thoughtworks, told WION.

A five-member team from Pune, India, working for this global software firm has designed and developed this software from scratch. We have been working on developing this software since 2017 and we had the first version released in 2020 and even now modifications are being made. The data processed using our software has also been released, Dhanani said.&nbsp;

Based on the data derived using our&nbsp;software, the science teams working on it have made multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Among the discoveries made are of OH radicals in faraway galaxies and Rydberg atoms (massive hydrogen atoms) in a distant galaxy, she said. The software processed more than 1 Petabyte (1000Terabytes) of data to arrive at this.

While the data is provided by the software, it is interpreted and studied by the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) team that comprises Indian and South African scientists. The principal investigator in this project is Dr. Neeraj Gupta from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA).

"All science telescopes make use of data processing software and at some point in time, they require human intervention. With ARTIP, we have ensured that manual intervention is not required. The data can directly be studied by the science teams and they can draw observations from it," she added.

The MeerKAT telescope is only a precursor to the world's largest array of radio telescopes - Square Kilometre Array (SKA). MeerKAT is eventually meant to be subsumed into the SKA. The SKA can scan the skies for radio signals, using its unprecedented capabilities. It is capable of generating massive amounts of data, almost comparable to how much the internet does in a day. Thoughtworks' E4R(Engineering for Research) division hopes to scale up ARTIP to aid the teams working with SKA data as well, Chhaya said.&nbsp;

Software by Indian techies helps hear from distant galaxies, make discoveries

An Indian IT professional was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment on Thursday on charges of a "brazen sexual assault" against a fellow female passenger inside a commercial airplane early this year.

Prabhu Ramamoorthy, 35, who came to the US on a H-1B visa in 2015, will be deported after he serves his sentence, a federal court in Detroit said as it sentenced the Indian national to nine years of imprisonment.

Judge Terrence Berge hoped it would be grave enough to deter others from committing similar crimes. Federal prosecutors had sought 11 years of imprisonment for Ramamoorthy.

"Everyone has the right to be secure and safe when they travel on airplanes. We will not tolerate the behaviour of anyone, who takes advantage of victims who are in a vulnerable position. We appreciate the victim in this case for her courage to speak out," US Attorney Matthew Schneider said after the sentencing was announced.

Ramamoorthy was convicted in August after a five-day trial that was conducted before United States District Judge Terrence Berg. The jury deliberated approximately three-and-a-half hours before returning the guilty verdict.

According to the evidence presented at the trial, on January 3, Ramamoorthy had engaged in a sexual act with a female, while she was sleeping on a flight from Las Vegas to Detroit. Ramamoorthy was seated along with his wife, when he sexually assaulted his co-passenger.

During the trial, the government admitted evidence demonstrating that Ramamoorthy had digitally penetrated the woman sleeping next to him during the overnight flight. The sexual assault woke her up, she found her pants unbuttoned and unzipped, and sought help from the flight attendants.

The sentence was proof that the safety and security of all aircraft passengers was a priority for the FBI, said Timothy R Slater, Special Agent in Charge, Detroit Division of the FBI.

In recent years, a number of Indian nationals have been arrested or charged with sexual assaults inside a plane. The FBI says airplane sexual assault is a serious offence that is on the rise. FBI statistics indicate that investigations of mid-air sexual assaults increased by 66 per cent from 2014 to 2017.

That was in part due to increasingly "cramped, confined spaces; alcohol and drugs; fewer flight attendants; and dark cabins on night flights" -- factors that "likely embolden offenders" -- the FBI said in a recent report.

The cramped style of airplane seating can exacerbate trauma for victims. According to mental health professionals, victims who are violated in confined spaces feel even more helpless, vulnerable and powerless. Victims may also feel intimidated by the person sitting next to them since the seating arrangement means that the perpetrator is effectively blocking the victim from getting up, according to the FBI.

According to court papers, Ramamoorthy is from Tamil Nadu, where he grew up. His parents are farmers. He came to the US in July, 2015 after his graduation to work as an IT professional.

US Navy veteran Adam Purinton who killed an Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla last year pleaded guilty on Monday in federal court to hate crime and firearm charges.&nbsp;

Kansas-based Purinton had already pleaded guilty to state charges for murder and attempted murder and was sentenced to life in prison last month. The local prosecutor said at the time that Purinton will not be eligible for parole for 50 years.

The sentencing is scheduled for July 2, the Justice Department said both federal prosecutors and the defence are seeking the maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Adam Purinton is accused of killing Srinivas in a racially motivated hate crime at a bar in Kansas City last year. 52-year-old Purinton was charged with first-degree murder of Kuchibhotla. He was also charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder of Kuchibhotla's friend, Alok Madasani, and a bystander who had chased Purinton after he fled the bar.

According to reports, Purinton, yelled, "Get out of my country," before shooting Kuchibhotla, who succumbed to injuries and was declared dead.

The 33-year-old victim, Srinivas, hailed from Hyderabad and moved to the US to study engineering at the University of Texas. He worked as an aviation systems engineer at Garmin. Srinivas used to meet his friends customarily at Kansas's Austin's Bar and Grill where the tragic incident occurred on February 22 last year.&nbsp;

Srinivas' murder sparked international outcry and raised debates over hate crimes and racial bullying in the country shortly after President Donald Trump's inauguration.&nbsp;

Another incident of racial bullying surfaced in the United States when a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/watch-new-york-lawyer-threatens-to-deport-cafe-workers-for-speaking-in-spanish-137967">Manhattan-based lawyer</a> was seen hurling racial slurs at Spanish speaking staff of a restaurant.&nbsp;

The video of the incident has gone viral and shows the man threatening the staff and shouting at them for speaking in Spanish. "The clients of your staff are speaking Spanish to customers when they should be speaking English," the man said in the video.&nbsp;

"I pay for their welfare, I pay for their ability to be here. The least they could do is speak English," the man shouted and threatened to deport the cafe workers.&nbsp;

US gunman accused of murdering Indian techie Srinivas Kuchibhotla pleads guilty to hate crime

A US Navy veteran today pleaded guilty to the murder of Indian engineer, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, in a racially motivated hate crime at a bar in Kansas City last year that raised fears of growing intolerance in America following President Donald Trump&#39;s tough rhetoric on immigration.

Adam Purinton, 52, pleaded guilty before a Kansas court.

He was charged with first-degree murder of Kuchibhotla, 32, and two counts of attempted first-degree murder in the shootings of his friend, Alok Madasani, and a bystander, who chased Purinton after he fled the Austin&#39;s Bar and Grill in Olathe city on February 22 last year.

Purinton, yelled, &quot;Get out of my country,&quot; before shooting Kuchibhotla, who later died from injuries sustained in the attack.

Kuchibhotla and Madasani worked as engineers at Garmin, a tech company that makes GPS devices.

Purinton had earlier pleaded not guilty on all these charges and waived his preliminary hearing in late November 2017.

Before allowing Purinton&#39;s plea, Judge Charles Droege explained to him that changing his plea meant he would face life in prison, as well as a minimum of 146 months, maximum of 653 months in prison for attempted murder, not to mention the sentence he&#39;ll face if convicted of a hate crime in federal court.

Purinton told the judge he understood, then he sat down as the State presented the details of the incident last February.

Kuchibhotla&#39;s widow Sunayana Dumala welcomed the guilty plea.

&quot;Today&#39;s guilty verdict will not bring back my Srinu, but it will send a strong message that hate is never acceptable,&quot; she said in a statement.

Purinton sentencing is scheduled for May 4.

According to court documents, Purinton&#39;s plea hearing was originally scheduled for May 8 but later it was moved to March 6.

Federal prosecutors alleged that Purinton committed offences after substantial planning and premeditation, attempted to kill more than one person in a single criminal episode, and knowingly created a grave risk of death to others on the scene.

The incident happened after a Purinton allegedly became agitated with the two Indians who were having a drink after work.

Grillot, a regular at the bar, approached the man and asked him to leave. The suspect left the bar and drove away, according to Grillot. He allegedly returned later and allegedly opened fire in the bar, according to prosecutors.
