The Indian state of Maharashtra’s anti-terrorism squad (ATS) filed a chargesheet against Pune city-based Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientist, Pradeep Kurulkar who was allegedly lured by a Pakistani agent using the alias ‘Zara Dasgupta,’ reported PTI&nbsp;on Saturday (July 8).&nbsp;The DRDO scientist shared sensitive details about India’s missile systems as well as the country’s drone and robotics programmes with the female Pakistan-based intelligence operative, according to the charge sheet.

<h2>What did the ATS find&nbsp;about the case?</h2>

Kurulkar was arrested on May 3, on espionage charges while the charge sheet by the authorities in Maharashtra was submitted a week ago. The ATS has claimed that Kurulkar engaged in conversations with ‘Zara Dasgupta’ about Indian missile systems and other classified defence projects.

The now-former director of the DRDO (Engineers), the 60-year-old&nbsp;Kurulkar is currently in judicial custody. According to the ATS, Kurulkar and ‘Zara Dasgupta’ were in contact via WhatsApp and also via voice and video calls. In the chargesheet, the anti-terrorism squad claimed to have found “explosive” chats between the scientist and the Pakistani agent.&nbsp;

‘Dasgupta,’ who had claimed to be a United Kingdom-based software engineer, allegedly befriended Kurulkar by sending him obscene messages and videos. It was only after the investigation, that it was found that her IP address was tracked to Pakistan, said the ATS in the nearly 2000-page charge sheet.&nbsp;

“Kurulkar, who was attracted to her, stored the classified and sensitive information of DRDO on his personal phone and then allegedly shared it with Zara,” the chargesheet said, as quoted by PTI. The ATS also found chats which showed Kurulkar sharing his personal as well as official schedules and locations with her which he was not supposed to share with anyone.&nbsp;

<h2>What did they discuss?</h2>

According to the charge sheet, Kurulkar chatted with the Pakistani agent about classified information regarding the BrahMos Launcher, Drone, Unmanned Combat Vehicles (UCV), Agni Missile Launcher and Military Bridging System, among other things.&nbsp;

The ATS also alleged that the Pakistani agent created multiple fake accounts to engage with Kurulkar two of which were under the names Zara Dasgupta and Juhi Arora. In his messages, the DRDO scientist spoke about, “BrahMos, Agni 6, Rustom (a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned air vehicle), surface to air missiles, unmanned combat air vehicles, drone projects”.

<h2>About the case</h2>

The DRDO scientist was arrested, back in May, on allegations of espionage. In an official statement, he was accused of misusing “his post thereby compromising sensitive government secrets, which could pose a threat to India’s security if it falls into the hands of the enemy nation.”&nbsp;

According to the ATS, the two were in contact from June 2022 to December 2022. It was not until DRDO initiated an internal probe after his activities were found to be suspicious, Kurulkar blocked Dasgupta’s number in February, earlier this year.&nbsp;

During a forensic analysis of Kurular’s phone, experts at the DRDO also found malware and reported it to ATS. The DRDO scientist is currently in Pune’s Yerwada jail.&nbsp;

Pakistan summoned India's Charged Affaires here on Friday and conveyed its strong protest over the unprovoked violation of its airspace by an Indian missile.

Pakistan's National Security Advisor Moeed Yusuf on Friday questioned India's ability to handle sensitive technologies and said the Indian government did not bother to inform Pakistan about the accidental missile firing incident.

The Foreign Office said the incident raises several fundamental questions regarding security protocols and technical safeguards against accidental or unauthorised missile launch in a nuclearised environment.

"Such a serious matter cannot be addressed with the simplistic explanation proffered by the Indian authorities, it said, adding that some of the questions should be answered.

Indian decision to hold an internal court of inquiry is not sufficient since the missile ended up in Pakistani territory. Pakistan demands a joint probe to accurately establish the facts surrounding the incident, it said.

India must explain the measures and procedures in place to prevent accidental missile launches and the particular circumstances of this incident, the FO said, adding that India must clearly explain the type and specifications of the missile that fell in Pakistani territory.

The Indian missile landed near Mian Chunnu city in Pakistan's Punjab province on Wednesday evening without causing damage to civilian property.

"It is learnt that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident," India's Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Friday.

Pakistan also sought the flight path/trajectory of the accidentally launched missile and how it ultimately turned and entered into Pakistan.

It asked if the missile was equipped with a self-destruct mechanism and why it failed to actualise.

It further asked India if its missiles were kept primed for launch even under routine maintenance.

Why did India fail to immediately inform Pakistan about the accidental launch of the missile and waited to acknowledge till after Pakistan announced the incident and sought clarification&nbsp;the FO asked.

The incident happened at a time when there is a chill in bilateral relations between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir issue.

Pakistan said the whole incident indicates many loopholes and technical lapses of serious nature in India's handling of strategic weapons.

DRDO said the missile hit the designated target with a high degree of accuracy during the test launch. The agency said the sensors tracked the impact point across the eastern coast including the missile trajectory.

Reports say the missile is based on the Prithvi defence vehicle from the Indian ballistic missile programme.

The successful launch was applauded by the defence minister Rajnath Singh calling it a "significant milestone".

India on Monday launched the supersonic missile assisted torpedo system developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from Wheeler Island in Odisha.

The system is a next-generation missile-based standoff torpedo delivery system, the government said. The missile was launched from a ground mobile launcher.

During the launch, the full range of capability of the missile was successfully demonstrated. The missile is set to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability.

The missile carried a torpedo, parachute delivery system and release mechanisms during the launch.

"The canister-based missile system consists of advanced technologies namely two-stage solid propulsion, electro-mechanical actuators and precision inertial navigation," the government said.

Several DRDO labs were involved in developing the missile system. It was described as a "textbook launch".

Defence minister Rajnath Singh while congratulating the team on the successful test said: "The development of the system is a perfect example of building futuristic defence systems in the country."&nbsp;

The missile is set to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability. The missile carried a torpedo, parachute delivery system and release mechanisms during the launch. "The canister-based missile system consists of advanced technologies namely two-stage solid propulsion, electro-mechanical actuators and precision inertial navigation," the government said. Several DRDO labs were involved in developing the missile system. It was described as a "textbook launch". Defence minister Rajnath Singh while congratulating the team on the successful test said: "The development of the system is a perfect example of building futuristic defence systems in the country." India’s government on Thursday approved the purchase of 33 Russian fighter jets and upgrades to another 59 planes, acting to beef up its air force at a time when the military is locked in a border stand-off with China.

The approval for 21 MiG-29 planes and a dozen Su-30 jets will together cost 181.48 billion rupees ($2.43 billion), the defence ministry said. The purchase, along with the upgrade of 59 other MiG-29s, was an attempt to address the “long felt need of the Air Force to increase its fighter squadrons.”

Tensions between India and China are at their highest in years following a clash last month in a disputed stretch of the border in the western Himalayas in which India lost 20 soldiers.

The two countries, which fought a brief border war in 1962, have since the recent clash moved additional forces and military equipment into key sections of the 3,488-km Line of Actual Control - the ceasefire line separating the two forces.

The green light for the Russian planes followed a visit to Moscow last month by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh where he urged his hosts to speed up deliveries, officials said.

More than half of India’s military hardware is still of Russian origin even though over the last decade India has turned to the United States and Israel for high-tech arms transfers.

The Defence Ministry also approved the purchase of air-to-air missiles developed indigenously that it said will add to the strike capability of the air force.
