One of Maersk Frankfurt's 21 crew members has died in the ongoing fire tragedy on the cargo vessel, that is about 65 kilometres southwest of Mangalore, Karnataka.

For more than 40 hours, Indian Coast Guard(ICG) ships and helicopters have been leading the firefighting efforts.

As of Sunday (July 21)&nbsp;afternoon, the Indian Coast Guard has deployed five vessels - Samrat, Sujeet, Sachet, Varaha and Samudra Prahari, to fight the blaze that has been spreading to different parts of the cargo vessel that is ferrying International Maritime Dangerous Goods(IMDG) from Mundra, Gujarat to Colombo, Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

According to the Indian Coast Guard, the fire has reduced in scale, but heavy smoke continues to obscure the flame. The fire has also spread to the right side of the ship and is affecting the containers stacked in that portion of the vessel.&nbsp;

A major fire broke out on Maersk Frankfurt, around 5pm Indian Standard Time(IST), Friday, 19th July, following which Indian Coast Guard began their firefighting operations. The efforts of the ICG ships are being assisted by an Advanced Light Helicopter(ALH Mk3) that is dropping packets of Dry Chemical Powder(DCP), a specialised firefighting chemical. Further, a Dornier short-range Maritime patrol plane is monitoring the situation, keeping a close watch for any signs of an oil spill from the flaming cargo vessel.&nbsp;

WION has learnt that MV Maersk Frankfurt is manned by 21 crew &nbsp;- comprising 17 Filipinos, two Ukrainians, one Russian and one member from Montenegro. One Filipino crew member is reported dead. The cause of fire remains unknown. While the Indian Coast guard assets continue to fight the fire, and there is also a danger posed by the 1,400 metric tons of diesel that the vessel is carrying. ICG assets have been dousing the flames with water and specialised firefighting chemicals such as Aqueous Film Forming Form(AFFF), Dry Chemical Powder(DCP).

An Emergency Towing Vessel(ETV) Water Lily departed from Mumbai on Friday evening and is expected to reach the flaming cargo vessel by Sunday evening. In addition to this, the owner of MV Maersk Frankfurt has also mobilised a salvage team to board the flaming vessel and carry out further actions as necessary. The Indian Coast Guard would be working with the salvage team to expedite containment and recovery operations.&nbsp;

As a precautionary measure, the Indian Coast Guard has also deployed a specialised Pollution Control Vessel(PCV) Samudra Prahari. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is continuing fire-fighting operation east of Sri Lanka on Motor Tanker New Diamond which is a Greek-owned vessel and under charter by Indian Oil Cooperation.

The vessel has been ablaze since September 03 afternoon, following a major explosion in the engine room, while transiting Sri Lanka’s Exclusive Economic Zone. MT New Diamond is reportedly carrying more that 2.7 lakh MT Kuwait export crude oil that was destined for Paradip, Odisha. According to Marinetraffic.com, MT New Diamond is a 20-year old crude oil tanker that is 333 meters long and 60 meters wide.&nbsp;

ICG Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) Ameya with 1,000 liters oil spill dispersant, arrived at the area, on Saturday evening to augment pollution response efforts. Another FPV Abheek with 40 drums (200 kg each) aqueous film forming foam concentrate (AFFF), 10 units of DCP (50 Kg each) and 20 barrels (50 kg each) of dry chemical powder (DCP) had also joined in. Owing to intense and continuous fire-fighting, the fire has been localised at Port Bridge Deck and Aft Ready Use tank area.

Indian Coast Guard has deployed six vessels and two aircraft for fire fighting and to handle pollution response in event of an oil slick. ICG Ships Sujay, Shaurya and Sarang are on scene since Thursday and are continuously engaged in fire fighting operation using specialized external fire fighting system along with Sri Lankan ships/tugs. After consolidated efforts, ICG and Srilankan ships alongwith Tug APL Winger have towed MT New Diamond 35 nautical miles away from nearest shore of the island nations east coast. Another Tug TTK-1 arranged by salvors joined along with ICG ships, Tug Ravana &amp; Tug Vasabha for continuing the fire-fighting operations.

Two CG Dornier aircraft with Oil Spill Dispersants (OSD) and Pollution Response Spray pods arrived at Hambantota on late Friday evening. Coast guard helicopters, embarked on ships are also being launched regularly for aerial assessment. Aerial recce by Srilankan Airforce Beachcraft and spraying of water through Bambi Bucket by Srilankan Airforce MI-17 is in progress.

Oil Tanker MT New Diamond towed to safety; fire-fighting still on, no oil slick

Official Sources have told WION that the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has rescued the captain and a crew member from the burning oil-tanker MT New Diamond, that is about 37 nautical miles east of the Central Sri Lankan Coast.

The master of the oil-tanker is said to be on-board Indian Coast Guard Shaurya that is at the location, and is coordinating the firefighting and rescue operations.

So far, 22 crew members of the Panama-fagged oil-tanker have been rescued and one crew member is said to be missing. The authorities maintain that there is no oil spill in the area, however there were two explosions heard near the seat of fire during the early hours of Friday.&nbsp;

Two Sri Lankan tugs Ravana and Vishaba alongwith ALP Winger, have been assisting in fire fighting operations with spray of water and foam. Spraying of water and foam around the boundary wall around the main crude oil tanks is done to ensure that the heat doesn’t transfer via the ship’s body. So far, it is being said that the fire hasn’t spread to the cargo hold of the ship.

Two Sri Lankan Naval Ships and INS Sahyadri are also in the area. Continuous Aerial recce is being carried out by Indian Coast Guard Dornier Aircraft and Sri Lankan Airforce Beachcraft. A crack measuring two&nbsp;meters has been observed on the Portside of the tanker, nearly 10 meters above the waterline.

The ships involved in freighting operations have been able to put out the fire in the accommodation area and exhaust funnel of the vessel, but a fire is has been noticed near Port RU Fuel oil tank area.&nbsp;
