Several countries, including Canada and India, have announced a ban on the use of single-use plastic. Earlier this year, 124 countries pledged to end plastic pollution in the near future. A recent report said single-use plastics account for 1/3rd of all plastic produced globally.

<p>India's ambassador to the United Nations, T.S. Tirumurti is the chair of Taliban sanction committee, also known as the 1988 sanctions committee. The Committee comprises all 15 members of the Security Council and makes its decision by consensus. The committee has 2 Vice-Chairs for 2022 -- Russia and the United Arab Emirates. The committee is mandated to oversee the implementation of the sanctions measures, designate individuals and entities who meet the listing criteria among others.</p>

<p>While Taliban has got tacit support, especially by some permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, this time the committee did not provide the waiver to send a message across that the grouping has to walk the talk on women's rights. There are no women in the Taliban governance structure and since the collapse&nbsp;of the Afghan Republic last August, things haven't been on a positive trajectory of women in the country.&nbsp;Recently, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said that the country is witnessing "institutionalized systematic oppression of women".</p>

It was 2002 Loya Jirga, after the Bonn conference that appointed Hamid Kazai as the President of the Afghan Transitional Administration. The first known Loya Jirga is said to have taken place in 1747, that appointed Ahmad Shah Durrani as the King of Afghanistan who later established the modern state of Afghanistan. So far, the Taliban has not shown any interest in holding such a meeting.</p>

<p>Social media influencers and doctors in India will now be subjected to Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) from July 1, for benefits received from businesses for sales promotions. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued recommendations on the new provision’s applicability. The Union Budget made provision for TDS on incomes in order to prevent tax revenue leakage by incorporating a new section, 194R into the income Tax Act, 1961. Any individual who gives a resident a benefit of more than 20,000 in a year must pay TDS of 10 per cent, NDTV reported.</p>

<p>The Joint Secretary in the Finance Ministry, Kamlesh C Varshney explained advantages which includes free medicine samples for doctors, overseas flight tickets and free tickets of Indian Premier League (IPL) of business and many more things. He stressed that these items should be revealed while submitting an income tax return and shall not be hidden as they are not being sold.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The section 194R applies to sellers that offer incentives in cash or any kind such as car, computer, gold coins, mobile phones in addition to discounts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This gave a break for the customers by exempting sales discounts or cash discounts from the section, claiming if it gets included will put the seller in difficulty. &nbsp;However, if perks such as mobile was returned to the manufacturer after being used for the purpose of service like for a social media influencer, then this new rule doesn’t apply in such cases.</p>

<p>The CBDT specifies that if doctors receive free samples of drugs while working in a hospital, section 194R applies free distribution of samples to the hospital. In case for doctors who work as consultants for a hospital and receive free samples, TDS should be applied first to the hospital which will deduct necessary tax under the section for doctors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to CBDT the section doesn’t apply the benefits to if supplied to a government institution that is not engaged in business or profession such as a government hospital.&nbsp;</p>

India to introduce new tax rules for social media influencers, doctors

<p>As Rwanda's capital Kigali is set to host the Commonwealth summit later this week, Foreign Ministers of India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be in attendance and while Maldives will be represented at Presidential level, by its President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. EAM will be in Kigali from 23rd June to 25th of June for the summit.&nbsp;</p>

Initially Pakistani foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto was to represent his country, but due to some personal issues he is skipping the mega meet. If FM Bhutto had gone, this would have been for the first time both External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Pakistan's new Foreign Minister would have been present at any summit together. Last year EAM Jaishankar and the then Pakistani FM SM Qureshi were present together in Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe for a meet on Afghanistan.</p>

<p>Sri Lankan foreign minister Prof. GL Peiris and Bangladeshi FM AK Momen will also be present, a bilateral with the Indian side cannot be ruled out. Remember over the weekend, Bangladeshi FM was in Delhi for a joint consultative commission meet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Maldives President's presence is important given that the country rejoined the grouping in 2020. Maldives President Yameen had pulled out of the 54-member grouping in 2016 after the Commonwealth criticised his government over his authoritarian actions back home, like the detention of opposition leaders and undermining the judiciary.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Leaders of Commonwealth countries meet every two years for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Since 1971, a total of 24 summits have been held, with the most recent being in British Capital London in 2018. PM Modi had attended the meet that time. The 2015 Commonwealth summit in Malta saw India being represented by the then EAM Sushma Swaraj.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Rwanda is decked up as the country is ready to welcome the largest gathering of world leaders the African continent has seen in years. For Rwanda's President Paul Kagame it will be a moment to show his country's progress and economic growth. Almost 35 heads of state are expected, while other representations are at the foreign and official levels. Of the 54 countries, 53 are attending with Nauru excusing itself due to elections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We expect 35 Heads of State and other high profile guests representing countries and organisations. We will also have First Ladies and in total, we expect over 5,000 people,” said Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Rwanda Prof. Nshuti Manasseh who was quoted in Rwanda's KT Press.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Brunei is represented by its Sultan, Eswatini by its king Mswati III even though 14 countries will be present at the Presidential level, 17 at the Prime ministerial level, and 10 at the foreign minister-level.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Countries represented at the Prime Minister level include Mauritius by PM Pravind Kumar, the UK by PM Boris Johnson, and Canada by PM Justin Trudeau. <p>In a strongly-worded statement at the United Nations General Assembly, India's Ambassador to United Nations TS&nbsp;Tirumurti has asked the world to "condemn hatred against non-Abrahamic religions as well" and "stop from being selective in combating religiophobias".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The strong statement comes in the back of the Islamic State terror attack on Karte Parwan Gurdwara in Kabul that killed two&nbsp;people, including one Afghan Sikh. This is the third&nbsp;major attack by Islamic State on Sikhs in the country in the last few years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian envoy said that the attack is "yet another tragic example" of hate "against Sikh religion" as the hoy place was "attacked, desecrated and damaged". Condemning the attack, he emphasised that "there cannot be double standards on religiophobias if you truly want to combat hate."</p>

<p>He was addressing the assembly's informal High-Level Meeting to mark the commemoration of the first International Day for Countering Hate Speech.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the multilateral organisation, attempts have been seen, usually by Pakistan to strongly raise the issue of Islamophobia but have been silent about discrimination against other religions, even its dwindling minorities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian envoy during his speech on Monday explained that "India has time and again emphasised that combating religiophobia can never succeed if it continues to be exclusionary and remains restricted to one or two religions only" while "completely ignoring the rise in hatred and discrimination against non-Abrahamic religions including Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also slammed the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, pointing out how "every one of the world’s major religions has a home in India" which makes it a "nation of unparalleled diversity". Highlighting how the country "over centuries, provided refuge to all, whether Zorastrians or the Jewish community or Tibetan Buddhists or many from our own neighbourhood" and "through embracing both democracy and pluralism, India has promoted a culture of tolerance and respect for all religions and cultures – under our overarching constitutional framework."&nbsp;</p>

<p>OIC, mostly at the behest of Islamabad has been quick to react to India's internal developments. He said, "Aberrations are dealt with within our legal framework and we reject selective outrage from outside, especially when they are motivated and pursuing a divisive agenda just as we heard today references against India by OIC."&nbsp;</p>

At UN, India raises Kabul Gurdwara attack; envoy Tirumurti says combat 'religiophobias'

<p>The Indian state of Meghalaya is well known for the huge amount of rainfall it receives every year and Mawsynram – known as the wettest place in the country – broke a 66-year-old record this week. On Friday, the town experienced a mammoth 1003.6 mm of rainfall in 24 hours – the highest ever on a day in June, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The previous record for most rainfall in a single day in Mawsynram was 944.7 mm on 7 June 1966, according to a PTI report.</p>

<p>"Mawsynram is at present the wettest place in India, with an average annual rainfall of 11802.4 mm (average of the 1974-2022 period). Cherrapunji receives 11359.4 mm of rainfall in a year (average of the 1971-2020 period)," Sunit Das, Scientist at IMD's regional centre in Guwahati, told PTI.</p>

<p>Cherrapunji, which is among the wettest places in the world, also saw around 972 mm of rainfall on the same day – the highest in June since 1995 and the third highest in the last 122 years.</p>

<p>"It doesn't always rain like this. 50-60 cm is normal once or twice every year. But 80 cm and above is certainly not usual," Das told PTI while explaining the sudden increase in rainfall.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday embarked on a two-day visit to Karnataka to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for several rail and road infrastructure projects worth over Rs 27,000 crore.</p>

<p>Taking to Twitter, PM Modi said, "Leaving for Karnataka, where I will be attending programmes in Bengaluru and Mysuru. The first programme will be held at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, where a Centre for Brain Research would be inaugurated. The foundation stone of the Bagchi-Parthasarathy Multispeciality Hospital will be laid.</p>

<p>"According to Prime Minister`s Office (PMO), the Centre is developed as a one of its kind research facility and focuses on conducting vital research to provide evidence-based public health interventions to manage age-related brain disorders.</p>

<p>The `Technology Hubs` have been developed by transforming Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Karnataka at a cost of over Rs 4600 crore and is supported by many industry partners. It aims to create a skilled workforce to address Industry 4.0 manpower needs. These Technology Hubs, through their various innovative courses, will provide high-skill training in cutting-edge technology and improve opportunities for ITI graduates in employment and entrepreneurship.</p>

<p>At a programme in Bengaluru, Prime Minister said development works worth over Rs 27,000 crore would either be inaugurated or their foundation stones would be laid. These works cover diverse sectors and will boost `Ease of Living` for the people of Bengaluru and surrounding areas.</p>

<p>"I will reach Mysuru at around 5.30 pm and there too, key development works would either be inaugurated or their foundation stones would be laid. I will also be attending a programme at the Suttur Math. Tomorrow morning, the Yoga Day programme will also take place in Mysuru," added PM Modi.</p>

<p>In a step toward enhancing mobility and boosting connectivity in Bengaluru, Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of the Bengaluru Suburban rail project (BSRP), which will connect Bengaluru city with its suburbs and satellite townships. The project, which is to be built at a cost of over Rs 15,700 crore, envisages four corridors with a total route length of over 148 km.</p>

<p>The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Bengaluru Cantt and Yesvantpur Junction railway station to be developed at a cost of around Rs 500 crore and Rs 375 crore respectively.</p>

<p>PM Modi will reach Kommaghatta in Bengaluru, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of multiple rail and road infrastructure projects worth over Rs 27000 crore.</p>

<p>He will attend a public function at Maharaja`s College Ground in Mysuru where he will lay the foundation stone of the Coaching terminal at Naganahalli Railway Station which will be developed at a cost of over Rs 480 crore.</p>

<p>During the programme, the Prime Minister will dedicate to the Nation, India`s first Air Conditioned Railway Station - Sir M Visvesvaraya Railway Station at Baiyappanahalli, which is developed on the lines of a modern airport at a total cost of around Rs 315 crore.</p>

<p>He will also lay the foundation stone of two sections of the Bengaluru Ring Road project. The project to be developed at a cost of more than Rs 2,280 crore will help reduce traffic congestion in the city.</p>

<p>The Coaching terminal will also have a MEMU shed and will decongest the existing Mysuru Yard, facilitating the running of more MEMU train services and long-distance trains from Mysuru, improving both connectivity and tourism potential of the region. This will benefit the daily commuters as well as those travelling to long-distance destinations.</p>

<p>During the programme, the Prime Minister will also dedicate to the nation the `Centre of Excellence for persons with communication disorders` at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH). It is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities for the diagnosis, assessment and rehabilitation of persons with communication disorders.</p>

<p>On the occasion of the eighth International Day of Yoga (IDY) on Tuesday, Prime Minister will participate along with thousands of participants in a Mass Yoga Demonstration at Mysore Palace ground in Mysuru.</p>

<p>Integrating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav with celebrations of the eighth IDY, Mass Yoga demonstrations will also be organised at 75 iconic locations across the country under the leadership of 75 Union Ministers, along with the Yoga Demonstration by the Prime Minister at Mysore.</p>

<p>The Yoga demonstrations will also be held by various educational, social, political, cultural, religious, corporate and other civil society organisations and will be attended by crores of people across the country.</p>

<p>Prime Minister`s Yoga programme at Mysuru is also part of the novel programme `Guardian Yoga Ring` which is a collaborative exercise between 79 countries and United Nations organisations along with Indian Missions abroad to illustrate Yoga`s unifying power that surpasses National boundaries.</p>

<p>The death toll climbed to 5,24,873 with 18 new fatalities. The number of active cases increased to 76,700, the data updated at 8 am stated.</p>

<p>The daily positivity rate was recorded at 4.32 per cent and the weekly positivity rate at 2.62 per cent, the ministry said.</p>

<p>"India is the most important neighbour of Bangladesh. Initiatives taken by both nations have helped us achieve stability &amp; development across the region. Bangladesh-India relations are based on mutual trust &amp; respect," the Bangladeshi FM said.</p>

<p>The first physical JCC Meeting between India and Bangladesh is being held in New Delhi today and EAM S Jaishankar is the co-chair of the meeting along with his Bangladeshi counterpart AK Abdul Momen.</p>

<p>The JCC is to review the bilateral ties including cooperation in the wake of COVID-19, border management and security, trade and investment, connectivity, energy, water resources, development partnership and regional and multilateral issues, the MEA said earlier in a statement.</p>

PM Narendra Modi launches torch relay for Chess Olympiad for first time ever in history of event

<p>On Saturday, several protesters in the northeastern state of Bihar ransacked offices and damaged public property in a railway station in order to express their outrage over a new military recruitment plan with a demand from the government to reverse course, reported Reuters.</p>

<p>Thousands of protesters attacked and damaged train coaches, burned tyres, and clashed with the officials at the railway station. Considering the unrest, the authorities cancelled close to 360 trains.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A senior police official, Sanjay Singh, who oversees law and order in the state, told Reuters that nearly 12 protesters were arrested and at least four policemen injured in the attack.</p>

<p>"Around 2,000 to 2,500 people entered the Masaurhi railway station and attacked the forces," he added.</p>

<p>The Police have totally arrested at least 250 people in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh as a preventive measure, and there has been one death during the protest this week. Some people have accused the police of using excessive force.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Saturday, the government announced concessions for those who will serve under the scheme in order to control the protests and outrage.</p>

<p>The federal home ministry announced that it would reserve 10 per cent of vacancies in the paramilitary forces and Assam Rifles, which is a unit in the Indian army, for those who have passed out of the army after the four years mandated in the scheme.</p>

<p>Sequoia has been locked in a legal battle with Sandeep Kapoor, after he included the company in a defamation lawsuit against media companies that reported on a leaked Sequoia email of June 2. Kapoor was Sequoia's in-house general counsel for nearly nine years until 2019.</p>

<p>The lawsuit is the latest in a series of troubles for Sequoia that have the company grappling with complaints from startups about damaged trust following high-profile governance scandals at some of its portfolio companies in India and Southeast Asia.</p>

<p>Kapoor's firm, Algo Legal, has said in a press statement and its lawsuit that Sequoia sent an email to its portfolio companies this month making baseless references to "concerning details" about the law firm that hurt its business and reputation.</p>

<p>Sequoia denied the allegations in a 19-page court filing in India's tech hub of Bengaluru on June 18, calling the lawsuit "frivolous and vexatious" and saying it was duty bound to inform its portfolio companies when it detected certain irregularities.</p>

<p>An independent probe at Sequoia Capital-backed fashion startup in Singapore, Zilingo, found certain payments made to Algo and its related entities "were not in consonance with the engagement terms/contracts", forcing Sequoia to caution its portfolio companies from dealing with the law firm, the court filing states.</p>

<p>Sequoia's filing, has not been made public.</p>

<p>A spokesperson for Algo and Kapoor said on Sunday they told the court on Saturday the investigation into Zilingo’s affairs is ongoing and there was no final finding, and that Sequoia’s allegations in the filing were without merit.</p>

<p>Detailing the Zilingo probe's findings for the first time, Sequoia said it found the fashion startup paid Algo and its related entities more than 6 million dollars between 2020 and 2022.</p>

<p>Sequoia was Algo's top client in billings, but the U.S. venture capital firm ended its engagement with Algo in January. Sequoia on Sunday declined to comment on its court filing.</p>

<p>The Bengaluru court will next hear the matter on June 29.</p>

<p>Zilingo in April suspended its 30-year-old CEO and cofounder Ankiti Bose, a former Sequoia analyst, over suspected financial irregularities. Bose was later dismissed in what she has said was a wrongful termination.</p>

<p>Zilingo and Bose did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.</p>

<p>Bose's removal, Zilingo has previously said, followed an independent investigation into complaints about what the startup described as "serious financial irregularities".</p>
