The Chandigarh Police is on high alert after two bullet shells were reportedly recovered from a private bus being used to ferry the Sri Lankan cricketers. A number of Sri Lankan players are currently staying in Chandigarh ahead of the first Test of the three-match series between India and Sri Lanka at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. The Test match is scheduled to kick off from March 04.

As per a report in India Today, two bullet shells were recovered from the luggage compartment of the bus which has been ferrying the Sri Lankan players from their hotel to the PCA Stadium in Mohali and back. The bullet shells were recovered on Saturday during a check by the police officials using metal detectors. The bus was parked at the hotel complex at the time of the recovery.

As per the report, the bus was recently hired for a marriage function. It is suspected that the bullet shells could have been left back as celebratory firing during marriages is common in several parts of India, including Punjab. However, police have launched an investigation into the matter and the bus officials were questioned.

No FIR has been registered in the matter so far but the police remain on high alert. More details regarding the case are expected in the coming days. India and Sri Lanka are currently involved in a three-match T20I series which will be followed by two Test matches.

The Indian team defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the second T20I at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Saturday. The two teams will play the third and final T20I match of the series at the same venue on Sunday before heading to Mohali for the first Test starting next month.

While the members of the Sri Lankan T20 squad are in Dharamshala with the final match yet to be played, the players who are part of the Test squad are currently staying in Chandigarh and training at the stadium in Mohali to prepare for the two-match series.

In 99 Tests, Kohli has&nbsp;7,962 runs at an average of 50.39 along with 27 centuries. He recently stepped down as the Test captain, leading India to 40 wins in 68 encounters. Under him, India won their maiden Test series in Australia, have an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests in mid-2021, dominated at home and played the inaugural WTC final.

The second and final Test will be held at the M Chinnaswammy Stadium, Bengaluru where 50% crowd is expected. Thus, Kohli will miss the chance of playing his 100th Test in his second home (i.e. Bengaluru) and amid crowd presence, unless he misses the Mohali encounter.

The squad selection has hinted at the beginning of a new era of the Test team as the selectors dropped four senior players from the side while naming Rohit Sharma the captain after Virat Kohli's departure.

The likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha and Ishant Sharma have been axed from the Test squad and have been replaced by youngsters. While the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal are likely to get more chances in the middle-order now, Saha has been replaced by young wicket-keeper KS Bharat, who is seen as a long-term competitor of Rishabh Pant for the first-choice keeper's spot.

Despite a number of young players being included in the squad, former India cricketer and national selector Dilip Vengsarkar is not happy with some of the decisions of the Sharma-led selection panel. Vengsarkar, who was a member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning squad has questioned the absence of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sarfaraz Khan in the Indian Test team.

Both Gaikwad and Sarfaraz have been enjoying a stellar run in the domestic circuit and have been scoring runs consistently for their respective state teams. Vengsarkar accused the selectors of 'not applying their minds' while selecting the team.

"It seems there isn't application of mind when the team is selected. How can one explain the omission of Ruturaj and Sarfaraz, who are two of the most prolific scorers in the domestic circuit? Looking at the team, a couple of players, though talented, haven't done much to merit their place in the squad," the former selector was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

"Let every player earn his place in the team and not take it for granted. Ruturaj and Sarfaraz deserve a place. The selectors are damaging their morale by not selecting them for India," he added.

While Gaikwad was the highest run-getter in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021-22 with 603 runs from five matches at an average of over 150, Sarfaraz has been dominating bowling attacks in the Ranji Trophy over the last couple of years. The right-hander has&nbsp;1995 runs to his name at an average of 199 in nine matches since the 2019 season.

Gaikwad is currently part of India's ODI and T20I squads but is yet to receive his maiden call-up in Tests. Sarfaraz has not received his maiden international call up for Team India yet.
