Yashasvi Jaiswal plays as a batter in the Test team, and although he rolls his arms a bit, he still doesn’t bowl often; however, he was crucial in Sri Lankan keeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella’s dismissal on day five of the concluded Test in Galle. On Wednesday (Aug 19), on-field chatter between the two around grabbing an IPL deal led to Dickwella’s dismissal, and credit must be given to Jaiswal. The instance took place in the 60th over of Sri Lanka’s second innings, and although the banter itself was good-natured, the two were in each other’s faces throughout it. The Indian opener, who was trying to get under Dickwella’s skin and wanting him to push for a hook shot despite knowing it wasn’t his strongest shot, began the banter, saying, "There wasn't a lot of shots in the first innings. I need to see something,” to which Dickwella responded with ‘okay’. Jaiswal then pointed towards the deep square leg area and said to him, "Hit him there, I need to see something." Also read| IND vs SL, 1st Test: Manav Suthar's 10-for in only second match helps India win by 165 runs "No, I'm not Jaiswal," Dickwella, who returned to the Test side for the first time in three years, replied. He cut the very next ball to deep point for two before the exchange continued, with Jaiswal saying, "If you hit him there [into the stand], I will definitely tell Sanga." Ironically, Sangakkara and Dickwella also have another thing in common besides nationality and wicketkeeping duties: both are products of the same school - Trinity College, Kandy. The moment came on the next ball -- when instead of hooking a short-pitched delivery off Prasidh Krishna -- Dickwella gave himself room to hit it over third man, and top-edged it to the keeper. The Indian camp erupted in joy as the last-recognised batting partnership was broken, and more so for Jaiswal triggering Dickwella’s wicket, with several Indian players celebrating with Jaiswal.

India’s only centurion so far in the Galle Test against Sri Lanka, Devdutt Padikkal, revealed what keeps his engine going in the middle as he smashed his career-best 167 in only his fourth Test, propelling India to 460 for nine at stumps on day two. Padikkal was on a roll in Galle, taking on Sri Lankan spinners and seamers at will, hitting 15 fours and a six in his marathon outing. Entering this match on the back of an unbeaten 142 in India’s only warm-up fixture, Padikkal scored big batting at number three. His 167 even forced broadcaster Sanjay Manjrekar to choose him over first-choice Sai Sudharsan for that position, who missed out on selection due to a toe injury. Manjrekar said India should persist with Padikkal even when Sai attains full fitness. Also read| SL vs IND, 1st Test: Padikkal, Jurel shine as India dominate rain-hit Day 2 Upon sealing his chance, Padikkal explained how hunger for runs and seeing off the first 10 balls make his job easier. "I think, honestly, it's just the hunger to [score] more runs," Padikkal said in a chat with Sony Sports Network after the second day’s play. "I just enjoy batting out there, and the moment you get to a hundred, it's easy to relax and feel that relief. How he came down the track and smashed his sixth ball for a straight six tells a lot about his preparation against the turning ball, and on such tracks. Explaining in detail how the team management has helped him work on that, Padikkal said, "Yeah, I think we [the India team] have discussed that at length. Especially when you're playing spin, it's important that you have certain plans in your head. You cannot go out there and expect to react [to the ball] all the time. It's important that you have a couple of shots in your head that you want to play as soon as you go out there, so that you can put some pressure on the bowler as well. "So I think over the last year or so, we have really worked on trying to find ways [within] our own strengths that we can really implement to make sure that we put pressure back [on the bowlers],” he continued. As things stand, India has batted 116 overs for 460 runs at the loss of nine wickets in the first innings.

Devdutt Padikkal reveals mantra behind making run scoring look easy in Galle Test hundred

Has Devdutt Padikkal answered all the questions the men’s selection committee and the team management were seeking for the longest time? Perhaps! The left-handed batter came in at number three on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and owned it completely. Padikkal smashed his maiden Test hundred, remaining unbeaten on 131* at stumps, propelling India to 288 for two and into the driver’s seat. Looking in command and control of his knock, Padikkal made light work of Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, impressing all, including cricketer-turned-broadcaster Sanjay Manjrekar. Since dropping Cheteshwar Pujara at number three, India tried several options, including their Test captain Shubman Gill in that position, but none seemed to have clicked. Sai Sudharsan was the last to be tried before a toe injury ruled him out of the series, which opened the gates for Padikkal to return to the Test setup. Also read| IND vs SL, 1st Test: Devdutt Padikkal hits maiden Test century as India dominate Day 1 Riding on a brilliant hundred in the warm-up fixture, Padikkal was bound to have a breakthrough outing in the series opener, and going by the looks of his shot selection, he did not disappoint. His display against the Sri Lankan spinners was the highlight of his innings, and Manjrekar had nothing but high praise for the lanky batter. Taking to his X handle following Padikkal’s maiden Test hundred, Manjrekar wrote, “Devdutt Padikkal god sent for India v spinners. Excellent technique, both in defence & attack. 👏👏👏”

Devdutt Padikkal god sent for India v spinners. Later, commenting on his strengths during a chat on Sony Sports Network, Manjrekar said, “Devdutt Padikkal was the big change that India had, I really think selection is so good that when you see Padikkal walk in and play spin so comfortably, because he's good in defense against spin, he's good at picking 1s and 2s when the field is slightly deep, and then he's also good at playing attacking shots, and that too off the back foot on slow, turning pitches.”
Backfoot Shots Separate Padikkal from Rest
While he looked utterly in control of his shot selection on the front foot, Padikkal’s backfoot shot selection left Manjrekar in awe. The former Indian batter even suggested that Padikkal should continue at number three for India in Tests even when Sudharsan returns from his injury. “That's something remarkable. On slow, turning pitches, to hit shots off the back foot with a straight bat and the pull shot tells you that it's somebody who wants to get onto the back foot, and the best way to play spin on a slow, turning pitch is to play the majority of the bowling off the back foot. “Along with that, he's also got this knack of going down the pitch and hitting the ball over the sight screen. So on pitches where there is going to be an emphasis on spin, India should bat him at number 3 even if Sai Sudharsan comes back, because he looks such a formidable player against spin; I think it was a godsend for India, Devdutt Padikkal at No. 3 with the kind of spin talent he has,” Manjrekar continued.
