The government of Pakistan has been advised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to impose an 18 per cent General Sales Tax (GST) on food, medicine, petroleum items, and stationery, reported ARY news.

The IMF experts in a report to Islamabad have suggested Pakistan's newly elected government put an end to sales tax relaxation.

Following its December 2023 visit to Pakistan, the IMF team sent out a report in February 2024 that included several suggestions ahead of the FY2024–2025 budget.&nbsp;

The IMF has suggested placing a number of goods, such as unprocessed food, stationery, medicine, POL products, and others, under the standard 18 per cent GST rate.

It assessed that rationalising GST rates could generate 1.3 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) revenue which equals Rs 1,300 billion in the national exchequer.

The IMF has overall demanded the removal of all the distortionary tax policy changes related to compliance, which includes the abolition of minimum taxes and additional taxes, as well as the abolition of the Ninth and Tenth Schedules.

In February, there were reports that Pakistan would seek a loan package from the International Monetary Fund in addition to $1.5 billion in climate finance.

The island nation has borrowed heavily from China, infamous for ensnaring smaller countries using its 'debt trap' tactics.&nbsp;

"Without significant policy changes, the overall fiscal deficits and public debt are projected to stay elevated," IMF said in its review of Maldives' economy.&nbsp;

"The Maldives remains at high risk of external and overall debt distress".

As per World Bank estimates, Maldives owes China about 43 per cent of its national debt which comes up to $3 billion.

<h2>Muizzi laments&nbsp;debt crisis&nbsp;</h2>

The warning by the monetary agency came a day after Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzi conceded that he could not launch new development projects in the country due to the debt situation.&nbsp;

"I want to carry out more development projects. But this is why we cannot start all the stalled projects and launch new projects in all the islands at once," said Muizzu.&nbsp;

"The next two months will be the most difficult. This is the most critical time.&nbsp;It will become much easier after July. But we're starting now to do the work necessary to earn income," he added.&nbsp;

"I want to carry out more development projects. But this is why we cannot start all the stalled projects and launch new projects in all the islands at once," said Muizzu. "The next two months will be the most difficult. This is the most critical time. It will become much easier after July. But we're starting now to do the work necessary to earn income," he added. The factors it cited were elevated interest rates, waning government support in the wake of withdrawal of the Covid pandemic and low productivity.

The world body has kept overall inflation outlook unchanged at 5.8 per cent. In advanced economies, the inflation is predicted to be 2.6 per cent this year. There is a decrease of 0.4 per cent from the forecast in October.

In case of developing economies, the average annual inflation is predicted to be 8.1 per cent. This is 0.3 percentage points up from the previous prediction.

<h2>US, China behind the boost</h2>

The IMF has said that performance by the United States and China has been behind the increased outlook. Both countries' growth prospects in 2024 saw a significant boost. This means that US and China will experience less substantial slowdown than previously predicted.

The IMF has predicted that the US economy will grow by 2.1 per cent this year.

Things might look brighter in the US, China and other Asian countries, the picture in Europe doesn't look very encouraging.

The IMF has highlighted "notably subdued growth in the euro area."

Among the G7 nations, Germany is on path to become the slowest-growing economy with growth of just 0.5 per cent this year. This will follow a 0.3 per cent contraction in 2023.
