<p>In the middle of 2021, there was a huge shortage of critical medical supplies due to a large number of reported COVID-19 cases in India. Subriyo too contracted the virus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Abhay in a conversation with WION said, "Supriyo fell very sick and had to be taken to the emergency room via ambulance. Unfortunately, there was a severe shortage of ambulances, oxygen and hospital beds during that time. Further, we were regularly hearing stories of people passing away due to illness, unable to get hospital beds or oxygen."</p>

<p>He said, the duo "had always intended to get married, but realizing that life is so unpredictable, made us accelerate our plans."</p>

<p>Supriyo is the founder and owner of Gulnar Events, an event management company, whereas Abhay is a senior software development manager at a major MNC.</p>

<p>The couple dated for about eight years and finally got married at a grand wedding function on 18 December 2021. Friends and family members attended the ceremony as Supriyo and Abhay exchanged their wedding vows.</p>

<p>Even as Supreme Court decriminalised homosexuality in 2018, the couple is still struggling to register their marriage and get legal status.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Though together for about 10 years now, Supriyo says, "in the eyes of the law, we are strangers."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Marriage brings with it a basket of rights, such as the right to take healthcare decisions for your spouse, right to inheritance, etc. We want access to those rights, and hence it is very important to get legal recognition for our marriage."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We had to purchase two separate health insurance policies instead of single health insurance. Further, we can’t take healthcare decisions for one another and had to mention our parents’ names as nominees for our respective health insurance policies."</p>

<p>A total of 14 petitions have been clubbed to make the case for legalising same-sex marital unions in India.</p>

<p>In about 30 countries globally, same-sex marital unions have legal status. Supreme Court starting on 13 March 2023, will hear arguments and rule&nbsp;if the world's largest democracy will become the 31st in this fleeting list of democracies or not.&nbsp;</p>

'Strangers in eyes of law': WION speaks with gay couple as India's top court set to hear petitions on marriage

<p>A couple allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a lake in Keesara area near Hyderabad along with their two minor daughters, including a six-month-old, who died in the incident, police said on Tuesday.</p>

<p>Police suspect that the couple might have taken the extreme step over some family issue.</p>

<p>The deceased were identified as M Ramesh (30), a businessman, his wife Shyamala alias Manasa (26) and their two daughters- three-year-old Gitasri and six-month-old Divija, an officer said.</p>

<p>&quot;The bodies of the four family members were recovered from the lake, around 35 kms from here, this afternoon,&quot; Keesara Police Station Inspector M Surender Goud said.</p>

<p>Based on the preliminary investigation, it was found that the couple had left their house in Ghatkesar area on Monday evening along with their two daughters.</p>

<p>&quot;Manasa&#39;s brother and other family members looked for them and noticed Ramesh&#39;s bike parked near the lake this morning. They suspected that their kin might have jumped into the water body. A search was launched when the family members of Manasa approached the police,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>Police launched a search operation with the help of expert swimmers and retrieved the four bodies from the lake, Mr Goud added.</p>

<p>After the recovery of the bodies, Manasa&#39;s father lodged a complaint, in which he alleged that his daughter&#39;s in-laws were harassing her.</p>

<p>&quot;In the complaint, he said that his daughter&#39;s in-laws - her sister-in-law and other family members- were harassing and torturing her for not giving birth to a boy, which he claimed forced her to take the extreme step along with her husband and two daughters,&quot; an investigating officer said.</p>

<p>The couple had got married in March 2014. Police have registered a case and further investigation is on.</p>
