A shopper strolling through a thrift shop in Florida was left stunned after he spotted a real human skull that was kept on display in the Halloween section.

The North Fort Myers man, an anthropologist by profession, made the discovery on Saturday (Nov 4), triggering an investigation both by police and local detectives.

Authorities said that the shop owner purchased the skull years ago and kept it in the storage unit.&nbsp;

The Lee County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) said it was in touch with local detectives to further examine the skull. However, officials said they don’t believe the case is suspicious in nature.

They also couldn’t confirm whether they would press any charges in connection with the case.

LCSO Captain Anita Iriarte was quoted by Newsweek as saying, “We don't usually get a call from an antique store that there's a human skull out on the floor.”

"This is definitely different," she added.

"It was found in a Halloween section. What's been described is that the antique shop was having a fossil day, so this female, an anthropologist, was shopping and noticed the skull and then was like, 'This is definitely not a Halloween decoration," the police officer said, as cited by Newsweek.

They stated that the package, regardless of how the sender got the skulls or whether they were being shipped for any medical studies, will violate the laws of Mexico regarding how the corpses should be handled.

Archeologists have discovered an almost complete human skull dating back around one million years in the Chinese province of Hubei. The discovery is considered to be one of the most significant ones in recent times as experts believe that it will be crucial in understanding the evolution of human beings.&nbsp;

“There are very few human fossils around a million years old. As in China and East Asia, the only ones over one million years old are Yuanmou Man, which dates back to 1.7 million years ago, and Lantian Man, which is around 1.6 million to 1.2 million years old,” archeologist Gao Xing told state broadcaster CCTV.&nbsp;

“The No 3 skull is similar to the first two in terms of burial environment, faunal remains and technical characteristics of stone products, so the three skulls should belong to the same age. The age of the skull would be further confirmed by radiocarbon dating,” Lu told Hubei Daily. &nbsp;

Archaeologists have unearthed new sections of an Aztec tower of human skulls dating back to the 1400s beneath the centre of Mexico City.

The newly uncovered wall is comprised of the skulls of men, women and children who were likely killed during ritual sacrifices to the gods, according to the statement.&nbsp;

At least three children were discovered among the skulls, identified by their smaller build and developing teeth.

According to the CNN, 119 skulls of men, women and children were found by a team of archaeologists on the eastern façade of the tower that was originally discovered in 2017.

Archaeologists believe that many of the skulls belonged to captured enemy warriors and that the tower was intended as a warning to rivals of the Aztec empire, which was overthrown by Spanish conquistadors in 1521.

Some of the remains could be of people who were killed in ritual sacrifices to appease the gods, according to experts quoted in a statement released by the National Anthropology and History Institute.

"Although we cannot determine how many of these individuals were warriors, perhaps some were captives set aside for sacrificial ceremonies," archaeologist Barrera Rodriguez said.

The tower, 4.7 meters (15.4 feet) in diameter, is thought to have been built around the end of the 15th century.

It is located in the area of the Templo Mayor, one of the main temples of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan in the historic district of modern-day Mexico City.

In total, more than 600 skulls have now been found at the site, which Mexican authorities have described as one of the country's most important archaeological discoveries in years.

"At every step, the Templo Mayor continues to surprise us," Culture Minister Alejandra Frausto said in a statement.

"The Huei Tzompantli is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive archaeological finds in our country in recent years."

The statement noted that in Mesoamerica human sacrifice was seen as a way of ensuring the continued existence of the universe.

For that reason, experts consider the tower to be "a building of life rather than death," it said.
