British Museum, which is on a quest to recover about 2,000 missing artefacts, launched a public hotline on Tuesday (September 26) and requested assistance from the public in getting back the lost treasure, media reports said. The illustrious museum, which is now shrouded in scrutiny over its internal failings, also revealed that a vast majority of these missing artefacts are ancient Greek and Roman gems and jewellery.

The museum dismissed a staff member in the case after the loss of these valuable items. This incident laid bare an internal crisis. It also resulted in the resignation of the museum's director Hartwig Fischer. According to a statement by the British Museum, the jewellery dates back to the 15th century B.C.

It was over two years ago when the museum first received a wake-up call regarding the potential theft or vanishing of precious artefacts after an art historian grew suspicious upon encountering artefacts offered for sale on the internet. “It is evident that the British Museum did not respond as comprehensively as it should have,” Fischer said in a statement, adding, “The responsibility for that failure must ultimately rest with the director.”

The institution is renowned for housing priceless treasures like the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon Marbles. Now, the museum has since taken measures to enhance its security, going as far as launching a hotline for people to extend their support in finding the treasure.

Museum's statement

Sixty items have already been returned and another 300 pieces have been identified and are to be returned, according to a recent museum statement.

“If you are concerned that you may be, or have been, in possession of items from the British Museum, or if you have any other information that may help us, please contact us,” the museum's website said.

A dedicated email address has been set up for this purpose, ensuring that concerned citizens can easily contribute to this treasure hunt.

The museum is exercising caution by not divulging full details of the stolen artefacts, heeding the advice of experts. Nevertheless, they have disclosed that the stolen items encompass an array of gold rings, earrings, and other jewellery pieces dating back to the ancient Greek and Roman eras.

Treasure hunt: British Museum launches hotline, asks people to help find missing artefacts

In a positive development, Indian army and Chinese people's liberation army (PLA) on Sunday announced the establishment of a hotline. The hotline was established between the Indian Army in Kongra La, North Sikkim and PLA at Khamba Dzong in Tibetan Autonomous Region to "further the spirit of trust and cordial relations along the borders", Indian Army said.

The announcement incidentally came on PLA day, i.e. August 01. It was on this day in 1927 the PLA was founded. This is the sixth hotline between the two countries. Now, both sides now have two hotlines in Eastern Ladakh, two in Sikkim and two in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Indian Army release highlighted, "the Armed forces of the two countries have well established mechanisms for communication at ground commanders level", adding that these "hotlines in various sectors go a long way in enhancing the same and maintaining peace and tranquility at the borders".

The inauguration of the hotline was attended by ground commanders of both the countries and messages of "friendship and harmony" were exchanged through the hotline.

This development comes a day after Indian, Chinese military talks happened at Moldo for disengagement at Hot springs, Gogra & Depsang in Eastern Ladakh. Ties between the two countries have gone downhill since April-May last year after China amassed its troops at Line of Actual (LAC) control. The Galwan incident of 2020 resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers due to aggressive Chinese action — the worst such development at LAC in decades.

China's cyber regulator has launched a hotline to report online comments that defame the ruling Communist Party and its history, vowing to crack down on 'historical nihilists' ahead of the party's 100th anniversary in July.

The tip line allows people to report fellow netizens who 'distort' the party's history, attack its leadership and policies, defame national heroes and "deny the excellence of advanced socialist culture" online, said a notice posted by an arm of the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) on Friday.

"Some with ulterior motives ... have been spreading historical nihilistic misrepresentations online, maliciously distorting, denigrating and negating the history of the Party," said the notice.

"We hope that the majority of Internet users will actively play their part in supervising society ... and enthusiastically report harmful information," it said.

"Historical nihilism" is a phrase used in China to describe public doubt and scepticism over the Chinese Communist Party's description of past events.

China's internet is tightly censored and most foreign social media networks, search engines and news outlets are banned in the country.

Internet authorities often increase censorship and online supervision ahead of major events including historical anniversaries, political meetings and sports events.

The notice did not specify what punishments would be dealt to people, who are reported through the hotline, but netizens in China already face jail time and other legal punishments for posting content that is critical of the county's leadership, policies and history.

Legal amendments released earlier this year stipulate that people who "insult, slander of infringe upon" the memory of China's national heroes and martyrs face jail time of up to three years.

Last week, authorities in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu detained a 19-year-old man after making 'insulting' comments online about Japan's 1937 occupation of Nanjing.

Chinese social media sites that fail to censor critical content also face financial sanctions as well as temporary suspensions of service under current law.

India on Monday launched its first internet hotline to curb child pornography.

Siddharth Pillai, co-director of Indian anti-trafficking charity Prerana's Aarambh Initiative, which will run the hotline, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation that it would be the first step to removing online images.

The hotline seeks to curb a surge in photographs and videos on the internet showing children being sexually exploited, the founders of the initiative told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

"First report, then block, and then take down," Pillai told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The hotline can be accessed by the public, internet companies, victims and the police, and is available in either Hindi or English.

"Blocking can happen within a couple of hours of reporting, while taking the content down could take up to a week depending on the country where the servers are hosted," Pillai told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

According to experts, child sexual abuse imagery is a global problem with a majority of images found in North America and Europe where internet services are the most developed.

There is, however, no accurate data on the number of Indian children being exploited for pornographic material because many victims fear reporting it.

According to India's National Crime Records Bureau, there were 96 reports of children in the country being sexually exploited in online imagery in 2015, which was a 140 per cent rise from 2014.
