The tragedy was reported in various villages such as Lakshmipur, Paharpur, and Harsiddhi. They all fall under Motihari district, which is around 150 kilometres northwest of the state capital Patna.

The incident was first reported on Friday evening in Lakshmipur. Local news reported that&nbsp;12 others have also complained of serious health issues and were rushed to a hospital.

According to local media reports, a special team of the Prohibition Unit from Patna has been despatched to Motihari to investigate the matter. The special team consists of five police officers,&nbsp;two DSPs and three inspectors.

Seven persons have been detained by the police as part of the investigation into the incident, a Bihar police headquarters statement said here.

Four deceased have been identified as Tuntun Singh (35), Bhutan Manjhi (40), Chotu Paswan (25) and Ashok Paswan (45), the police said.

"The district police are investigating the matter and trying to ascertain those involved in the illegal liquor trade. Excise department officials are also probing the incident,"&nbsp;the Bihar police report said.

Responding to the incident, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, "It is a sad incident. I have asked for all information on it."&nbsp;

In 2016, the state government enacted the&nbsp;Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act,&nbsp;after massive protests by women and social activists to ban all types of alcohol in the state. In implementing this rule, Bihar became the second dry state in India after Gujarat—where India's founding father&nbsp;Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's hometown&nbsp;Porbandar is located.

However, cases of illicit liquor consumption have been surging in the state. The opposition parties have been urging Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to ease the draconian liquor rule.

The state leader has remained steadfast in his resolve as he had propelled to electoral victory in 2015 by promising to ban booze in the state. More than 80 people died on Saturday after consuming poisonous alcohol in India’s eastern state of Bihar.

The sale and consumption of alcohol was banned in Bihar in April 2016. As a result, a lot of illegal toddy liquor shops sprang up in the state. The policy was one of the major poll planks in the state elections that year, propelling incumbent Nitish Kumar to victory.

Saran district recorded the highest number of deaths at 66, followed by six in the adjoining Siwan district, while Begusarai witnessed two other deaths.

Earlier, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said no compensation will be provided if a person dies after consuming spurious liquor. The remark was met with severe criticism from the opposition, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav said that action is being taken where incidents of consumption of liquor are being reported in the state and alleged that most of the liquor supply is from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana states.

"Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has already given his statement. The probe is underway. Most of the liquor supply is from UP and Haryana where BJP is in power and they're not conducting any probe. Got to know that from the home of LoP V Sinha's kin, 108 cartons of liquor bottles were recovered," Tejashwi said, reports ANI news agency.

Earlier in the day, the police recovered several cartons of liquor from a truck in Sadar police station area in Muzaffarpur district. The cartons were hidden below wooden planks.

Meanwhile, the National&nbsp;Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to the Bihar government and the state's police chief over the hooch tragedy on Friday.

Among the suspended officials are two deputy superintendents of police and four station house officers.

Strict action will be taken against any public servant or others found complicit in the case, said the chief minister, describing the police and excise department failure to check the manufacturing and sale of spurious liquor as shameful.

Nobody will be allowed to get away with feeding poison to our people, he added.&nbsp;

"A total of ten people have been arrested. We have sent the samples of the liquor... to a forensic laboratory. The report is awaited," he added.

Police said people started falling sick after consuming a batch of illegally produced liquor late Thursday.

The victims, who include many women, worked at local tea estates in the region.&nbsp;

Doctors said those rushed to hospital in a critical condition were suffering from severe vomiting, extreme chest pain and breathlessness.&nbsp;

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered an inquiry into the deaths.

Apart from the arrests, two excise department officials were suspended for failing to take adequate precautions over the sale of the alcohol.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma vowed those responsible for the tainted booze would be brought to justice.

Cheap, locally made liquor is common in parts of rural India and bootleggers often add methanol -- a highly toxic form of alcohol sometimes used as an antifreeze -- to their product to increase its strength.&nbsp;

If ingested in large quantities, methanol can cause blindness, liver damage and death.

Hundreds of mainly poor people die each year in the South Asian country from tainted liquor, which normally costs just a few US cents a bottle.

Thirty-four people died in two adjoining districts allegedly after drinking spurious liquor at a village in Uttarakhand's Haridwar, officials said Friday. 
At least 40 others needed medical treatment.

Most of the victims had consumed the liquor Thursday evening at the `tehravin', the 13th day of mourning after a relative's death in Balupur village, they said.

Sixteen of the victims died in that village, close to Roorkee, according to the Uttarakhand police.

Eighteen more deaths took place in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district, which adjoins Uttarakhand, as people who had attended the ritual returned home, district magistrate Alok Kumar Pandey said.

But at least one man also brought some liquor pouches from Balupur and might have sold them in Saharanpur, officials said.

The Uttarakhand police too said that apart from the 16 deaths in their state, more people died in neighbouring Saharanpur. But they had confirmation of only nine deaths in the UP district from the liquor they consumed in Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand government has suspended 17 administration and police personnel and ordered a magisterial probe. In Uttar Pradesh, 10 policemen have been suspended.

Saharanpur DM Alok Pandey said the victims from Nangal and adjoining villages in his district had gone to Balupur to take part in the ceremony on Thursday.

They were served liquor there in the evening.

The victims started taking ill during the night, officials from both Uttarakhand and UP said.

Many of the Saharanpur victims could not be admitted to hospital because the area was lashed by rain and hailstorms, Pandey said.

In the morning, they were brought to the district medical hospital for treatment.

The deaths in the villages in Haridwar and Uttarakhand districts took place over the day on Friday, even as the authorities warned people not to consume any liquor they might be carrying from Balupur.

Saharanpur authorities Friday night said 42 people were still being treated, but none of them was in a serious condition.

At least two others were being treated in Haridwar district, officials said. 
Pandey said a man identified as Pintu had brought 30 pouches of hooch from Balupur village, and may have sold them to others.

It is not immediately clear if some of the victims are among his customers. 
One of pouches has been found and sent for forensic examination.

The official said the post-mortem examination has been conducted on 11 of the 18 Saharanpur victims.

In an unrelated case, eight people have died over the week in eastern UP's Kushinagar district after drinking hooch, officials said.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered departmental action against district excise officers of Kushinagar and Saharanpur, the state government said. He also announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs two lakh each to the relatives of those killed.

In Uttarakhand, 13 excise department personnel have been placed under suspension in connection with the hooch tragedy, Haridwar District Magistrate Deepak Rawat said.

Four Uttarakhand police personnel, including the Jhabrera station house officer, have been placed under suspension.

A court in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district convicted four people on Thursday in connection with a hooch tragedy that left around 170 people dead in 2011.

Additional district and sessions judge P S Chakraborty found Noor Islam Fakir alias Khora Badshah, the prime accused, and three others -- Dukhi Laskar, Khairul Laskar and Nazmul alias Kola Laskar -- guilty in the case.

The quantum of punishment would be pronounced on Friday. The court also acquitted six others for lack of evidence.

Additional district and sessions judge P S Chakraborty found Noor Islam Fakir alias Khora Badshah, the prime accused, and three others -- Dukhi Laskar, Khairul Laskar and Nazmul alias Kola Laskar -- guilty in the case. The quantum of punishment would be pronounced on Friday. The court also acquitted six others for lack of evidence. In the worst hooch tragedy in the state, around 170 people died in December 2011 in Sangrampur in South 24 Parganas district after consuming toxic liquor.
