An initial investigation of the Hezbollah drone attack on an Israeli army base during the weekend revealed that the Iran-aligned Lebanese militant group launched two drones that entered Israeli airspace from the sea, The Times of Israel reported on Monday (Oct 14). The drones were Mirsad. The model is Hezbollah’s main suicide drone, the report said. Speaking to the publication, the Alma Center (an Israeli research institute) said that the Hezbollah drone had a 120-kilometre assault range and a top speed of 370 kilometres per hour. Also read | UN peacekeepers refuse to evacuate as Israeli airstrike kills at least 21 in North Lebanon The Alma Center said that the drone can carry up to 40 kilograms of explosives, and the ability to fly at altitudes of up to 3,000 meters. Drones were tracked by Israeli radars The report further said that the drones were tracked by Israeli radars, and one of them was shot down off the coast north of Haifa. Airforce planes and helicopters pursued the second drone, but it dropped off the radar and the military lost track of it, likely because it flew very close to the ground. This drone ended up striking the Golani Brigade training base near Binyamina on Sunday night. Four soldiers were killed and more than 60 others were injured in the attack. Israeli military chief visits army base On Monday, Israeli military chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi visited the Golani Brigade training base and praised troops for how they handled the attack. "We are at war, and an attack on a training base on the home front is difficult and the results are painful," Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi told troops. The four soldiers who were killed were identified as Sgt. Omri Tamari, 19, from Mazkeret Batya; Sgt. Yosef Hieb, 19, from Tuba Zangariya; Sgt. Yoav Agmon, 19, from Binyamina-Giv’at Ada; and Sgt. Alon Amitay, 19, from Ramot Naftali. (With inputs from agencies)

The United States announced on Sunday (Oct) 13 that it will deploy an advanced anti-missile system to Israel, along with US troops to operate it, to strengthen the country’s air defences following Iranian attacks earlier this month.

The United States announced on Sunday (Oct) 13 that it will deploy an advanced anti-missile system to Israel, along with US troops to operate it, to strengthen the country’s air defences following Iranian attacks earlier this month. President Joe Biden asked Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin to authorise "the deployment of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and associated crew of US military personnel" to Israel. "The THAAD Battery will augment Israel's integrated air defence system. This action underscores the United States' ironclad commitment to the defence of Israel, and to defend Americans in Israel, from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran," said Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder in a statement on Sunday. This is not the first time the US has deployed THAAD to Israel, having previously done so in 2019 during joint exercises and following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, according to the statement. Iran warns US against sending troops to Israel Earlier on Sunday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that by sending US troops to Israel to operate missile systems, the US was endangering its military personnel. "While we have made tremendous efforts in recent days to contain an all-out war in our region, I say it clearly that we have no red lines in defending our people and interests," Araghchi posted on X. US to deploy anti-missile system THAAD in Israel to ‘defend Americans’ against future Iranian attacks

In response to escalating tensions in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, the United States is preparing to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense battery to Israel. The move is aimed at bolstering Israel's defense capabilities against potential missile threats from Hezbollah. In addition to the THAAD system, there is speculation that U.S. soldiers may be stationed in Israel to operate and support the advanced defense technology. This deployment reflects the U.S.'s continued commitment to Israel's security amidst the growing regional conflict.

Hamas tried to persuade its two allies, Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, to join its October 7, 2023, attack against Israel or at least commit to a broader fight if the Palestinian militant group staged a surprise cross-border raid, The New York Times (NYT) reported on Saturday, citing the minutes of Hamas' secret meetings seized by the Israeli military.

The report said that the documents showed extensive efforts to deceive Israel about its intentions as Hamas laid the groundwork for a bold assault and a regional conflagration that Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar hoped would cause Israel to “collapse.” Also read | Thousands trapped in Gaza's Jabalia Camp as Israeli forces intensify assault; those trying to flee 'get shot' The documents consist of minutes from 10 secret planning meetings of a small group of Hamas political and military leaders in the run-up to the attack. Hamas planned to attack in fall of 2022 The documents showed that Hamas initially planned to carry out its attack on Israel in the fall of 2022 but delayed it as the Palestinian militant group was persuading Iran and Hezbollah to also participate in it. Hamas members said that the internal situation in Israel, an apparent reference to the turmoil over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial plans to overhaul the judiciary, was among the reasons they were “compelled to move toward a strategic battle”. The documents cited by The NYT further revealed that in July 2023, a top Hamas official visited Lebanon, where he met a senior Iranian commander and requested help with striking sensitive sites at the start of the assault.
