Deputy chief of Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force killed in Israeli airstrikes: IDF

In an explosive message to new Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem, Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant Wednesday (Oct 30) warned his appointment was “temporary” and not “for long.”

Gallant also posted a photo of the new leader, who was appointed on October 29 following the death of Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike on September 27.

The Israeli government also suggested that Qassem’s tenure may be brief, saying, “His tenure in this position may be the shortest in the history of this terrorist organisation if he follows in the footsteps of his predecessors.”

The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the only possible solution to the Lebanon conflict was the elimination of the Hezbollah organisation. "There is no solution in Lebanon except to dismantle this organisation," it declared.

It was in 1991 when Qassem was appointed the deputy chief of the Lebanon-based militant group by then-secretary General Abbas al-Musawi. However, al-Musawi was taken down by Israel the very next year, in 1992.

‘Temporary appointment,’ Israel’s explosive message to Hezbollah’s new chief Qassem

The question of whether Hezbollah has the upper hand on the ground remains contentious amid ongoing conflict in the region. Analysts point to Hezbollah's extensive military capabilities, strategic alliances, and local support, suggesting they may have an advantage in certain areas. However, the situation is fluid, and the dynamics can shift rapidly based on military engagements and political developments.

Does Hezbollah Have The Upper Hand On Ground?

Sheikh Naim Qassem succeeds Hassan Nasrallah as the new Hezbollah Chief. Naim Qassem has been a senior figure in Iran-backed group for more than 30 years. Nasrallah was killed in Beirut in late September by an Israeli strike. Since then many other senior Hezbollah officials have also been targeted. Hezbollah says Qassem was elected for his ‘adherence to principles and goals of Hezbollah’. Watch to know more!

Israel-Lebanon War: At Least 17 Air Strikes Hit Beirut On Wednesday: Lebanese Media

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin on Wednesday (Oct 23) voiced "deep concern" over recent Israeli airstrikes on the Lebanese army that killed three soldiers over the weekend.

With this, the death toll for Lebanese troops has reached eight, since an all-out war erupted between Israel and Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.

Speaking to his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant, Lloyd "expressed his deep concern about the reports of strikes against the Lebanese Armed Forces."

The Lebanese military in a statement on Sunday alleged that an Israeli strike had targeted the soldiers' vehicle in the country's south. Israel, however, claimed that it was pounding strongholds of Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Ensure the safety of peacekeepers

Pentagon spokesperson Major General Pat Ryder in a statement said that Austin "emphasised the importance of taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security" of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon — the Lebanese Armed Forces and UNIFIL forces.

The US Defence secretary also expressed his condolences for the death of the Israeli brigade commander, Colonel Ahsan Daksa, who was killed in the Jabalia area.

UNIFIL concerns

Lloyd's statement concerning the safety of peacekeepers come as the UNIFIL accused Tel Aviv of attacking its members multiple times in recent weeks.

Israel had even urged the United Nations peacekeepers to evacuate to avoid injuries or worse as it expands its war against Hezbollah. However, the peacekeepers on Oct 14 said they will maintain their positions.

In a statement, UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said, "The decision was made that UNIFIL would currently stay in all its positions in spite of the calls that were made by the Israel Defense Forces to vacate the positions that are in the vicinity of the Blue Line."

He further said that the UN Secretary-General António Guterres has confirmed the plans, "I want to emphasise that this decision still remains."
