Medical experts have suggested that there is a link between coronavirus and the mystery cases of hepatitis detected among children in several countries across the globe.&nbsp;

They believe that since there is a viral reservoir in children who have previously been infected with Covid, and when it lingers again, it can trigger an immune response that led to liver damage.

After being detected in Britain last month, over 429 cases of the liver disease have been found in children from more than 22 countries worldwide.

Severe cases of hepatitis are leading to inflammation of the liver according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Other symptoms include dark urine, yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice), fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, light-colored stools, and joint pain.

Although drugs can help to reduce inflammation and other symptoms there is no specific treatment to cure hepatitis.

The UK Health Security Agency had hinted that the rise in sudden cases in children may be linked to a common cold virus known as an adenovirus.

As a result of the recent cases, 17 children have needed liver transplants and one has died WHO's spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic told a Geneva press briefing.

''I think there are more cases out there,'' Professor Simon Taylor-Robinson, a hepatologist from Imperial College London told Dailymail.

''I'd imagine there are more cases than have been reported — but they are likely to be less severe,'' he added.

With at least five children dead and over 100 others infected, the US has started to probe a mysterious hepatitis infection that has been plaguing the kids across the country.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday said that it's probing 109 cases of severe and unexplained hepatitis in children across 25 states and territories.

They believe that it may be linked to a worldwide outbreak.

Among them, 14 per cent needed transplants, and more than 90 per cent needed to be hospitalised, the CNN reports.

Hepatitis, which means inflammation of the liver, can be caused by infections, autoimmune diseases, drugs and toxins.

There are five different types of hepatitis, from A to E, but it is currently unknown which type of the infection is currently affecting the children.

Dr Jay Butler, the CDC's deputy director of infectious diseases, stressed that the investigation -- a partnership between the CDC and state health departments -- is an evolving situation. Not all the hepatitis cases they are studying now may ultimately be caused by the same thing.

"It's important to note that this is an evolving situation, and we are casting a wide net to help broaden our understanding," CNN quoted Butler as saying.

"Adenovirus was detected in whole blood specimens from all patients by real-time PCR testing," the CDC said

"At this time, we believe adenovirus may be the cause for these reported cases, but other potential environmental and situational factors are still being investigated," the CDC said in a statement.

The WHO had said earlier that at least 169 cases of acute hepatitis cases were detected among children with the most number of cases being detected among children in the UK.

The CDC said monitoring the situation closely to understand the "possible cause of illness and identify potential efforts to prevent or mitigate illness."

Enhanced surveillance is underway in coordination with jurisdictional public health partners, it added while informing that clinicians have been asked to report cases of pediatric hepatitis.

Japan's health ministry confirmed the first case of acute hepatitis which has spread to over 12 countries worldwide.

The origin of the liver disease is still unknown. It was earlier reported in the US, UK, Canada and Europe among children with the WHO confirming at least 169 cases of the new form of hepatitis infection.
