Beloved comedian Billy Crystal and pioneering rapper Queen Latifah are among the 46th crop of Kennedy Center honorees, one of the United States' most prestigious arts awards, the center announced on Thursday. &nbsp;

Crystal and Queen Latifah will be honoured on December 3 along with acclaimed soprano Renée Fleming, sole surviving Bee Gee Barry Gibb and singer Dionne Warwick at the annual gala held in Washington, according to a statement.

The event at the Kennedy Center -- Washington's performing arts complex that serves as a living monument to slain president John F. Kennedy -- brings a dose of glitz to the capital, where such red carpet events are rare.&nbsp;

The gala regularly sees the cream of the cultural crop mix with Washington's top political echelons, including sitting presidents, with US President Joe Biden attending for the past two years.&nbsp;

The 46th iteration will be hosted for a third time by 2017 Kennedy Center Honoree Gloria Estefan to steer a slate of star-studded tributes.

The new class of honorees expressed their gratitude for the recognition in a statement, with Queen Latifah, an actress and singer as well as a rapper, saying she was "humbled to be included in this incredible list of artists."

"When we started on this journey decades ago, we were often told, 'No'. No, you won't be able to leave New Jersey. No, if you rap you can't sing. No, singers can't become actresses. No, actors can't also produce," said the hit "U.N.I.T.Y." rapper.

"To now be recognized amongst so many multi-hyphenates feels unbelievable, not for just me and my team, but for our community."&nbsp;

Crystal, known for an extensive comedic career marked by hits such as When Harry Met Sally,&nbsp;echoed the sentiment.

"I am overwhelmed to be part of this fantastic group of artists," he said.&nbsp;

"I started performing when I was five years old, making my parents and family laugh. Those laughs have carried me my entire life and career. I so wish they could be at the Kennedy Center for this glorious occasion."

The seven songwriters from the class of 2023 will be inducted at a gala on June 15 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

Snoop Dogg, whose hits include 'Drop It Like It’s Hot' and 'Gin &amp; Juice,' will be joining such rappers as Missy Elliott and Jay-Z in the hall. Estefan is credited for popularizing Latin rhythms with such crossover smashes as 'Rhythm Is Gonna Get You' and 'Let’s Get Loud.'

Ballard helped write Alanis Morissette’s monster 1995 album 'Jagged Little Pill' and was involved in the recording and writing of several Michael Jackson albums, including 'Thriller,' 'Bad' and 'Dangerous.'

Riley, the singer, songwriter, and producer, is credited with creating New Jack Swing and its top anthems like Bobby Brown’s 'My Prerogative' and Keith Sweat’s 'I Want Her.' Rose co-wrote many songs with Taylor Swift, including 'You Belong with Me,' 'Teardrops on My Guitar' and 'White Horse.'

The 2023 class “represents not just iconic songs but also diversity and unity across genres, ethnicity and gender, songwriters who have enriched our lives and, in their time, literally transformed music and the lives of billions of listeners all over the world,” said Nile Rogers, the hall’s chair.

Eligible voting members late last year turned in ballots with their choices of three nominees from the songwriter category and three from the performing-songwriter category.

Some of the 2023 nominees who will have to wait to include The Doobie Brothers, R.E.M., Heart, Blondie, Bryan Adams, Patti Smith, and Steve Winwood.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame was established in 1969 to honor those creating popular music. A songwriter with a notable catalog of songs qualifies for induction 20 years after the first commercial release of a song.

Some already in the hall include Carole King, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi, and Richie Sambora, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Lionel Richie, Bill Withers, Neil Diamond, and Phil Collins.

Singer-songwriter Gloria, husband Emilio Estefan and niece Lili have opened up about their respective journeys of fleeing their home country of Cuba when they were mere kids.

On Thursday, in the episode of 'Red Table Talk: The Estefans'--Gloria, Lili and Emily--talked about the ongoing human rights crisis in Cuba and talked in great detail about their own harrowing experiences of fleeing the country when they were children.&nbsp;

"I left Cuba when I was literally two and a half years old. In May of 1960 I was brought to the U.S. because my father was a police officer for the Cuban government. The night of the coup, that Fidel Castro took over power, my father came home and he told my mother, 'We’re in trouble, the president just left the country.' "And she said, 'Don’t go back, they’re going to arrest you,' and he said, 'I have to go back, my job is to protect the Cuban people.'" Gloria said.

Gloria 's father and grandfather were prisoned in their effort to protect the Cuban people, she claimed. Soon, they realised they had to flee the country they had ever known.&nbsp;

"His father, who was a commander in the army, and him were jailed. They let him go about three, four months later and he told my mother, 'I have to get you out of Cuba because this is going to get very bad.' They knew who Fidel Castro was, what was coming, because Castro attached himself to communism. My father left Cuba, he went to the U.S. My mother and I came through Pan Am airlines. I have the roundtrip ticket still," Gloria added.

Gloria's husband, Emilio and his niece, Lili, have similar stories to tell.&nbsp;

"I was born in a place where there’s no freedom of speech -- you are told how to think, what to say, and what to believe. You are taught from a very early age that Fidel is the Commander in Chief...the whole island is like a military base," Lili said.

"I must’ve been 13 and a half, a few months before getting out of Cuba, my mother passed away. She took her life because...desperation. And after that, it was on a Mother’s Day when my father sat me down, I will never forget, 1980, he says, 'Guys, there’s an opportunity for you and your brother to get out of Cuba. Are you guys willing?' How do you make those decisions when you’re 13? That’s one of the biggest problems with the communist regime, they have separated families. And I think this is one of the...why we wanted to tape this show, because we want to do anything to reunite these families again," she went on to add.&nbsp;

Emilio's story is not too different from Gloria's and Lili's. He, too, had to be separated from his immediate family to ensure safetry: for himself and those he loved.&nbsp;

"I was 11 years old when they came to my house looking for dollars because Castro decided to change the money. They looked around and went to the safe. My dad got nervous and couldn't open the safe. They blew out the whole wall and found nothing. That night, I cried all night, and in the morning I told my mother I was leaving. Four years later, I was almost military age, we were leaving because my mom was from Spain. I cried leaving Cuba, but my mom said, 'Don't cry.' One of the hardest things for me, was my grandfather and uncles gave me a photograph and said, 'You will never see me again.' I never saw them again," Emilio said.

 
"We had no money to speak of. He got in a 20-foot boat! You don’t get in the ocean in a 20-foot boat," Gloria said of Emilio chartering the boat to get his family out of Cuba. "None of them knew what they were doing, what they did was run out of gas. For 10 days they were lost at sea, and all I kept hearing through the news was -- the name of their boat was Popea, but there were other ones -- and they said there’s been a Popea lost at sea. I’m pregnant here, I don’t know what’s happening."

 
For Emilio, food and water meant nothing in comparison to the lives of his family members.&nbsp;

 
"You’ll know when you have kids in the future what you’d do for your family. The only thing we do is try to save our family to be in a free country. So we spent six days without eating and hardly drinking any water, and then when I get there, they say, 'The boat is too small, you cannot be able to bring them back,'" Emilio shared.

"The guy came with a list of people that were going to go on your boat and we were on the top and our last names were Estefan, so you are Estefan...who do you think they crossed out? Lili Estefan, Juan Emilio Estefan, and Jose Roman Estefan," Lili explained.

It was six months before Gloria and Emilio could obtain visas that legally allowed them to bring their families to the U.S. It's something Lili is grateful for.&nbsp;

"Thank you both, for you [Gloria] letting him go and you [Emilio] risking your life to save mine, my father’s and my brother’s," Lili said to the couple. "I have worked so hard for you guys to be proud of me. For you to know that it was not in vain."

The Cuban-American singer shared the childhood trauma during an episode of her Facebook Watch series 'Red Table Talk: The Estefans,'&nbsp;alongside her adult daughter and niece.

"Ninety-three percent of abused children know and trust their abusers. And I know this, because I was one of them," said Estefan, now 64. The assault was committed while Estefan was at a music school, by a distant male relative who was "in a position of power" and exploited Estefan's mother's trust in order to molest the young singer, she said.

Estefan, who sang the 1985 mega-hit 'Conga'&nbsp;with Miami Sound Machine, described how her mother had "felt lucky" that the music teacher said her child was talented and gave her special attention.

"I knew that this was a very dangerous situation," Estefan said.

Estefan said she lost some of her hair due to anxiety over the abuse.&nbsp;She eventually told her mother, and police were summoned. But they advised Estefan's mother not to press charges because she would "go through worse trauma" if she took the stand to testify.

Another television personality, Clare Crawley, appeared on the episode to discuss how she too was abused as a child.&nbsp;

"I also did not want to sit here quietly while you share and are brave," Estefan told Crawley.

Legendary singer Gloria Estefan has revealed that she tested positive for coronavirus a month back and assured that she is now fine.&nbsp; 
Estefan revealed in an Instagram video that she had mostly been in quarantine throughout the pandemic but recalled having stepped out in Miami once on October 30.&nbsp; 
 
The Grammy winning artists feels she may have contracted the disease from a fan who she met while dining out.&nbsp; 
 
"The only thing that I can imagine happened is that someone came up to me when I was eating and tapped me on the shoulder," she recalled. "They were very close, they had no mask and they were telling me beautiful things -- but that's the only thing that I have done outside my enclosure here, my quarantine ..." 
 
She recalled that a few days later she lost sense of taste and smell, making her "freak out a bit". 
 
She then tested positive for COVID-19 and quarantined in her home for two weeks. She also experienced "a little bit of a cough" and dehydration. 
 
Fortunately Estefan tested negative twice a few days later and is now doing fine.&nbsp; 
 
“I was very lucky, but I just wanted to share with you that I was in quarantine, and one day I went out and met with one person who was not wearing a mask," 63-year-old shared. "I even held my breath through their talk, but something must have happened there." 
 
The singer urged fans to maintain six feet distance and wear masks.&nbsp;

Legendary singer Gloria Estefan has revealed that she tested positive for coronavirus a month back and assured that she is now fine. Estefan revealed in an Instagram video that she had mostly been in quarantine throughout the pandemic but recalled having stepped out in Miami once on October 30.

Estefan revealed in an Instagram video that she had mostly been in quarantine throughout the pandemic but recalled having stepped out in Miami once on October 30. The Grammy winning artists feels she may have contracted the disease from a fan who she met while dining out. "The only thing that I can imagine happened is that someone came up to me when I was eating and tapped me on the shoulder," she recalled. "They were very close, they had no mask and they were telling me beautiful things -- but that's the only thing that I have done outside my enclosure here, my quarantine ..." She recalled that a few days later she lost sense of taste and smell, making her "freak out a bit". She then tested positive for COVID-19 and quarantined in her home for two weeks. She also experienced "a little bit of a cough" and dehydration. Fortunately Estefan tested negative twice a few days later and is now doing fine. “I was very lucky, but I just wanted to share with you that I was in quarantine, and one day I went out and met with one person who was not wearing a mask," 63-year-old shared. "I even held my breath through their talk, but something must have happened there." The singer urged fans to maintain six feet distance and wear masks.

The show is a spin off from jada Pinkett Smitgh's Facebook watch series and Gloria will co-host with daughter, singer Emily Estefan and her niece Lili. 
 
The first episode will have the veteran singer talking about her daughter's coming story to help the Latin community to tackle issues like sexuality more freely. 
 
"Emily came out three years ago," Gloria told 'The Talk' on Tuesday, "and no one knows because we really never had the reason or opportunity to talk about how we dealt with it as a family." 
 
"It was important for her (Emily) to talk about it (on the new show) and it was important for us to put it on the table. We share so much of our personal lives and private lives through (social media) that we wanted to use it in a good way, a healing way." 
 
The veteran singer admitted that the chat between her and Emily got heated a bit but her niece played the "referee". 
"It's important," she added, "because some people are going through these types of things. We hope to at least get it out there and speak about it, especially in the Latin community. So many things are taboo - like everything is taboo. My mother never even kissed my father 'til they were married by the church."
