The 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards, held in Los Angeles, celebrated the achievements of LGBTQ+ representation in media. Hosted by Wayne Brady, the ceremony honoured winners across 16 categories in film, TV, music, theatre, podcasts, video games, comic books, and journalism.

Among the notable winners were Ted Lasso, Yellowjackets, RuPaul’s Drag Race,&nbsp;and Reneé Rapp. The event also featured special performances by Chlöe and Kate Hudson, adding to the evening's vibrant atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the night was the presentation of the Vanguard Award to Oprah Winfrey, recognised for her impactful contributions to LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance. The award was introduced by Winfrey's longtime friends Chilli Pepper and Paolo Presta.

Another significant moment was the presentation of the Stephen F. Kolzak Award to Niecy Nash-Betts, an actress known for her advocacy and representation of LGBTQ+ characters. The award was presented by Sharon Stone.

GLAAD previously announced Special Recognition awards for The Dads (Netflix), Love in Gravity, Relighting Candles (Hulu), Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce (AMC Theatres), The Tennessee Holler, Yes I Am: The Ric Weiland Story, Drag Latina (Revry / LATV), Enamorándonos (UniMás), El sabor de la navidad (ViX),&nbsp;and Wendy, perdida pero famosa (ViX).

GLAAD also previously announced that +Life Media received the Barbara Gittings Award for Excellence in LGBTQ Media.

The second part of the ceremony is scheduled for May 11 at the Hilton Midtown in New York City, where additional awards will be presented, including Outstanding Film – Streaming or TV, Outstanding Reality Series, and Outstanding Broadway Production.

At the upcoming 2021 GLAAD Media Awards, the cast of the hit show will be paying a tribute to late actress Naya Rivera who died of drowning last year in July.&nbsp;The tribute will also be towards the LGBTQ community and the legacy that Rivera’s character Santana Lopez created.&nbsp;

Cast members, including Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Vanessa Lengies, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Alex Newell, Amber Riley, Harry Shum Jr., Becca Tobin, Jacob Artist and Jenna Ushkowitz, will appear during the virtual ceremony to celebrate the impact of Rivera’s portrayal on LGBTQ teens and Latinx LGBTQ representation on television. &nbsp;

The segment will be introduced by Demi Lovato who played Rivera’s onscreen girlfriend in the fourth season of the show. Lovato, in recent times, has hinted about being queer herself but has not officially come out.&nbsp; 
 
Series star Lea Michele, who came under fire last year after being accused of verbally abusing cast members, along with other “other traumatic microaggressions,” will not be in attendance.

The ceremony will air on April 8 on Youtube and will mark the 10 year anniversary of Santana coming out as a lesbian.&nbsp; 
 
Rivera drowned at Lake Piru in California in July 2020 where she had gone boating with her four-year-old son. The mother-son duo had gone swimming in the middle of the lake but was unable to due to the thick vegetation underneath. Rivera was able to save her son and put him back on the boat but was unable to untangle herself.&nbsp;
