<p>Lawyer of now-defunct Gitanjali Gems'&nbsp;owner Mehul Choksi on Thursday said that state-owned Punjab National Bank had intentionally "destroyed" the brand in an attempt to divert attention from their own mistakes.</p>

<p>Citing the credentials of the brand he added, "With the revenue of over Rs 12,000 crore, the debt-to-EBITDA ratio maintained by the Gitanjali was among the best in the industry. Notwithstanding the company's strong balance sheet and a stellar track record of loan repayments, in February 2018, prompted by allegations by Punjab National Bank, investigating agencies raided and seized Gitanjali assets."</p>

<p>He further said that several entreaties on the part of the brand's promoter Mehul Choksi fell on deaf ears.</p>

<p>"The one thing I want to ask everyone who has accused me is even if I were guilty, why did no one even try to save Gitanjali, a company with Rs 12000 crore of annual turnover, 6,000 employees and countless honours in its name?" promoter of the brand Mehul Choksi said.</p>

<p>Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are key accused in Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud case. They fled the country a year ago.</p>

<p>Choksi was granted citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda on January 15, 2018.&nbsp;<br />

<p>The PNB, the second largest state-run bank, had, on February 14, informed the exchanges about detecting the fraud at its Brady House branch in Mumbai, and named the firms led by Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi's Gitanjali Group, and some other diamond and jewellery merchants as suspects.</p>

<p>Central government agencies - the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate - registered cases on the complaint by the bank and launched nationwide searches on dozens of offices and residences of the alleged fraudsters. The bank named Nirav Modi's brother, his American wife Ami, and uncle Mehul Choksi besides some others in the FIR.</p>

<p>In December this year, the Interpol issued a red corner notice (RCN) against Choksi. The notice is a kind of international warrant through which the Interpol requests its member countries to catch fugutives wanted by the international police organisation. Nirav Modi has already been slapped with the RCN in July.</p>

<p>The CBI is also probing an additional loan default of over Rs 5,000 crore given to Choksi's companies.</p>

<p>At a hearing before a special court in Mumbai, his lawyer had said that the fugitive diamantaire cannot return to India as he is afraid of "getting lynched". His last known location is believed to be in the UK and India has approached the British government for his extradition.</p>

<p>The fraud was allegedly perpetrated by Modi and his uncle Choksi, the promoter of Gitanjali Gems.</p>

<p>It is alleged that they got LoUs and FLCs of Rs 12,636 crore issued in favour of foreign branches of Indian banks based on fraudulent claims.</p>

<p>He is the second independent director to quit the company&#39;s board after the alleged fraud surfaced this month. lready, two top-level executives -- compliance officer Pankhuri Warange and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Chandrakant Karkare -- have resigned.</p>

<p>In a regulatory filing, Gitanjali Gems submitted Haldipur&#39;s resignation letter dated February 14, 2018.</p>

<p>In the letter, Haldipur said: &quot;Last month, my wife has undergone a major spine operation at Pune. The post-operation recovery is not up to the expected level. This has resulted in restrictions on my movement. Hence travelling for board meetings at Mumbai will be very difficult for me in future.</p>

<p>&quot;Taking this factor into consideration I would like to step down as an independent director with immediate effect from the board and other companies,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>During his tenure as an independent director, Haldipur said he received some legal notices from lawyers as well as a senior civil judge in connection with the dues from the company.</p>

<p>&nbsp;&quot;You are aware as an independent director, I don&#39;t have a role to play in the internal working of the company and the company will take proper steps to resolve these matter,&quot; he added.</p>

<p>On February 14, Punjab National Bank (PNB) disclosed that it detected some fraudulent transactions with the financial implication of about Rs 11,400 crore and the matter has been referred to law enforcement agencies for recovery.</p>

<p>While billionaire jewellery designer Nirav Modi, the alleged perpetrator of this fraud, is not directly linked to any listed company, his relative and business associate Mehul Choksi&#39;s Gitanjali Gems is a listed firm.</p>

<p>Choksi, in a letter to his employees, stated that he would be unable to clear their dues in lieu of the ongoing probe in the 1.77 billion dollar scam.</p>

<p>In a communication to over 3,500 employees, said it would be &quot;very tough&quot; to clear dues of his employees or pay future salaries, as investigative agencies had seized his bank accounts and other properties, adding that the manner of investigation was starting to create havoc, and was hell-bent on stopping the operations.</p>

MEA revokes Mehul Choksi, Nirav Modi's passports

<p>Shares of Gitanjali Gems tumbled for the fourth straight session on Monday. At BSE, Gitanjali Gems&#39; stock plummetted 9.99% to Rs33.80 -- its lower circuit limit.</p>

<p>CBI searches were carried out at three places in Kanpur, questioning the three accused Directors - Vikram Kothari, Sadhana Kothari &amp; Rahul Kothari. Residential premises and offices of Rotomac Directors have also been sealed by the CBI in New Delhi.</p>
